The first time I have seen or heard anyone produce anything pleasant or melodic to listen to and creative on the Subharmonicon. This has renewed my interest in this synth
Haha thanks! I know it can be a crazy weird synth, I feel like really pleasant melodic sounds are like tiny knob turns away from the unpleasant sounds. Thanks for watching!
Yeah you have to interact with the instrument yourself. Your personality will come out of the machine. I was not interested in the subharmonicon at all until I got to play with it.
Only 413 subs? This channel is way more pro than that small number of subs would suggest. I'd love to see more elaborate reviews from you. Keep up the good work.
great video and really like that first patch you did, lovely sound. I just got a 3 set moog sound studio so really looking forward to learning this and getting some jams going with it. I'm being pulled towards semi modular so don't mind the challenge. I just tamed the Solar 42, my first synth, people said I'm crazy getting that as a first synth.
The Subharmonicon is one of the most focused and well-thought-out synthesis _instruments_ I've ever seen. Most synthesizers are basically an assortment of the same basic building blocks that we settled on in the 1970s - which isn't really a complaint, I built my own modular synth by doing just that - but the Subharmonicon is really doing its own, very tightly focused thing, and it does it beautifully. I had a chance to play with one of these briefly - it was for some unfathomable reason for sale in my local Guitar Center - and it was a ton of fun. Someday I'll be able to afford one, perhaps. Thanks for doing this look at it!
I have the Moog DFAM, Mother32, and Subharmonicon, and the Subh is the one I use the most. If it were between any of those three, I would definitely choose that one. Glad you had the patience and dedication to stick with it and share your experience. Because of its unique sequencer, it's a great "brain" for other modules you'll pick up!
Thanks for watching! I’m starting to see how all three of these units could be really awesome together. I think next up is the DFAM. But this thing is so fun. I’m so excited to mix and match it with other gear.
Hey, you've got a lot more than 413 now. Great video. I just ordered one, a bit behind the curve, but hey, I'll catch up :) Happy New Year when it comes. Cheers.
@@amberelmmusicGot myself a nice recording at the pub on Friday. My first creation with the Subharmonicon, and first with a Moog. Lots of fun. Yes, lots of tweaking until you find something pleasing, but once you find something, it's great. I also tried some techno with it. Just learning about techno. Cheers.
That’s awesome. I’d love to hear it if you wouldn’t mind sharing. I feel like it’s totally unusable and then it’s my favorite thing in my studio. A funny little device.
@@amberelmmusic I got the settings right for this, and didn't change them for a week until I got it recorded. I forgot to take a photo of all the knob positions :) It's here. Nice sounds. ua-cam.com/video/InhOW2fYvw0/v-deo.html
Good job! I was super excited when I got mine. Pulled it out over a weekend and put it back into the box :(. I will pull it back out soon but it's a beast to tame...
Oh boy, I'd love one of these. Got into modular right about the time this was first released and focused on building a rack with lots of individual modules rather than going down the semi-modular route. But every time I see someone demo a SH they make amazing sounds. Patch #1 here is especially beautiful! Great work.
Thanks! I’ve been wanting to get into modular for a while now. I feel like semi modular stuff is the gateway drug. Thanks again for the comment and for watching!
The Subharmonicon is one of my favs too. I have all the Moog semi-modular and it definitely stands out from the rest of them. At times it can can feel a bit hard to tame but then just a couple of knob tweaks and it's an instant inspiration machine. Another great vid BTW. Keep it up!
I feel the same way…it works the other way too. I’ll have a patch I’m working on and really like it. Want to add something and all of the sudden the magic is gone. Luckily it leads back somewhere awesome usually as well. Thanks for watching.
Wow, that 3rd patch is spectacular! Brilliant! Also, this is what I would consider a very professional video, wishing you the best with the growth of your channel!
I ordered mine before they even announced it --told my Sweetwater guy that once it was announced to process my payment ;-) I like it a lot. I think it would actually be pretty good for a newbie because the controls are pretty simple, and it's got music theory baked in. You don't need to understand the harmonic series or polyrhythms to make music using them.
That’s all true. I think the hardest part is being patient with it. It can sound terrible, and then like a tiny little knob turn has it making the most beautiful sounds.
I absolutely adore mine. I use it more as a huge part of my modular setup which just takes it to the next level. Basically I pair it with a Make Noise Maths for even more polyrhythmic craziness and some effects modules!
Great vid man. Just found your channel. I’ve had mine a couple of years now and it’s one of my favourite instruments. If I may echo another comment, a Make Noise Maths seriously expands the possibilities of this machine. I also have a DFAM, which also opens up possibilities. I like the style of your vids man so a new sub for thee here, your channel deserves to grow! Peace ✌️
Thanks for the comment! I think I’ll have to check out the maths at some point. I recently started building my modular rig, and Maths is on the list for sure, but not towards the top….maybe it should be haha. Anyways, thanks for watching.
I would recommend nudging it up the list squire… Maths and Pam’s New Workout were the first 2 modules I bought when I started building my modular a year ago. Already had some semi modulars so wasn’t in any great hurry for extra oscillators.
Will do…i just got Pam’s Pro Workout, which is pretty amazing. I feel like maths is in every video i see. You may be right. Also, I’m right with you on using semi modular for osc, env, etc. I’m actually making a video that touches on that right now.
@@amberelmmusic I would say there isn’t ever a time when I sit at the modular and don’t incorporate Maths in some way, it’s such a ridiculously versatile tool! Pam’s is a wonderful bit of kit, I’ll likely swap out mine for the Pro version at some point because the screen is loads better, along with the tweaks (I ain’t getting any younger and my eyes are following suit!).
I love this thing. It can be annoying to work with if you don’t have the time to make it sound good, but if you have time to tweak it for a while it can be pretty rad.
I recently got a Subharmonicon as my first synth, and I'm a complete newbie to synths (classical gal haha), and music technology/production in general 😅 safe to say that I'm still learning and it's been a whirlwind! It's such an interesting synth, love the idea of building with subharmonics and polyrhythms. Loved the patches you showcased, the ambient vibes are lush! This was a great video, subscribed! 🙌
I've had mine for a year and a half, and didn't make a video with it until a few weeks ago. It's a lot of fun, not quite a groovebox on its own but it can do things nothing else can do, at least easily.
Patch #1 was very nice and not so Subharm-ish. I love the synth too, but its sound is almost too recognizable sometimes (not really a bad thing). Get that patch section connected for movement. Not sure if you're into modular (yet lol), but if you are it will make the Subharm come to life bigtime. Patching within itself I found not too exciting but with a handful of external modules it makes this synth even more incredible.
Oh man…I wish I would have written down the settings for that one!! If I would have I absolutely would have shared it. If I ever get it back I’ll for sure let you know!
@@amberelmmusic No worries. Really like your style, though, so would be great to see any future tutorials for the Subharmonicon if you're willing to make them. If not your thing, the clips are still great to watch, so thanks for uploading.
I have two m32's since their release, then I grabbed the dfam, then the sub, the sub without a doubt was the weirdest out of the set, i just didn't get alot of really cool stuff from it, especially the poly rhythm area, it would often seem like an unstable clock source was driving the sequence, i even contacted moog to double check it wasn't broken. I kept it and it's in the rack, but I just dont know how to get it to sound very appealing musically. I just got spectravox too, which is another kind of different type of device, but even spectravox is useful and easier to put to use. The sub's subhamonics are handy, but the poly rhythm can get really messy quick, especially if you use more than 2 rhythm dials. Now, i feel like playing with it but in my opinion the subharmonicon is definitely a strange instrument.
I think you sold me the subharmonicon. I have another 32 that I like for ambient stuff and this compliment better the sounds than the DFAM. I’ll buy a classic synth drum in the future
Thanks! I actually took notes on those patches a while back. I’d be happy to share with you. If you want to email me I can reply with the exact patch. ryan@amberelmmusic.com
Thanks! I’m in love with this thing. You’re right something about physical knobs and circuitry is special. But plug ins are so great too. It’s sort of a golden age right now for music production…anyways, thanks for the comment and for watching.
Well, when asked, Bob Moog said *he* pronounced it 'MOGUE' (like 'vogue'), but other branches of his immediate family pronounced it 'MOOOOG'. Being a child of the 60's, I ALWAYS heard it as 'MOGUE' . But GREAT video!!!!!
I was really enjoying the first 2 and a half minutes... and then you had to start whining about subscribers. I hate this YT "trend" - it reminds me of a server in a restaurant 'reminding' you to tip every time they come to the table. That server is getting a 1 penny tip & the video is getting an automatic thumbs down from me. The stupid subscribe/bell graphic makes me wish I could give it another thumbs down. Since the video might still be interesting, I'll give you another chance instead of just blocking the channel like I usually do, but please stop this bullshit. If someone wants to subscribe, they will. They don't need to be "reminded" to do it.
