It was the 90's. Developers had new toys to play with (CD's providing massive amounts of storage space at a miniscule price compared to cartridges and floppy disks allowing for the use of fully animated 3D models, FMV, and full length recorded audio), the console manufacturers wanted games that would show off the capabilities of their new systems and publishers were willing to take chances.
1:07:32 "There tomatoes were walkin' down the road. A papa, a mama, and a baby tomato. Pretty soon, the baby tomato started fallin' behind. So papa tomato went *bonk*" Stuff like this, slim jim mode, the Little People Village... all perfect examples of things that made watching this awful trip of a game, totally worth it.
That disc change scared me. Reminded me, a while back I was watching a speed runner going through a game. after hour 2, the game messed up. The speed runner did a quick restart....game didnt start. Tried again. Nothing. couldnt get the game to start. It would then never work again, neither the disc or game system. What was the game system? The Jaguar. The worst piece of gaming hardware ever made
I can't think of why anyone would call this game awful. It's about a guitar playing skeleton and his adventure to defeat an evil vampire with his powers of skeletenism, blues, and corny jokes. It's the most amazing thing ever... (Yes I know the actual gameplay is meh at best)
Holy smokes, Lizstar is an amazing runner. She's funny, she's excellent to camera, she even drums along to the cutscenes... I'm almost sad this was buried in the awful block because this runner deserves all the views. Luckily, I'm watching this on UA-cam months later, and can view it at 15:00 my time in comfort. Anyway this game is amazing. 11 bones out of 10.
'the night belongs TO ME!' 'the night's over man' 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 seriously i love this game so much it has such a charm we're sorely missing out on these days
Not sure if anyone will see this comment but is there a way I can hear the full version of Ronnie Montrose playing the guitar and explaining blues and depression or is it only in this game? Liz talks about it around 32 minutes into the run.
Ngl, I try to be against being *too* much of a fan for any level of celebrity because I think it's unhealthy to idolize people but... goddamn hearing Lizstar's voice again as she entertains us running through old janky games makes dealing with the horrible time we've all been having just a bit easier~
Hey Lizstar, thanks for playing Mr. Bones! I have loved this game for so long and it is the biggest reason I regret selling my Saturn. It was great to see it again.
I experienced this game as a kid because it was one of like 2-3 games we had on the saturn. My brother beat it and I watched him play it. It was amazing as an experience, though he will attest to it not being the best 'game'. Completely worth it though.
Lizstar I've watched a ton of your AGDQ runs and this is by far the greatest no bones about it. But for real your wholesome personality really makes my day so from one gamer to another thank you.
18:15 i think the speed strat (guitar pun) reminds the criminal skeles of a police siren. I remember playing this game as a kid and the nonstop feeling of WTF suprises has only been matched by maybe one other game (guitaroo man). I guess japan knows how to make funky guitar games.
Runner introduction starts at 0:35
Run starts at 1:41

This game is truly art. I don't know what on earth compelled the devs to make it, but hot damn I am glad they did.

I thought Wand of Gamelon had some wild cut scenes, and then there was this game

Mr. Bones is the HD remake the world needs.
Clean up the controls and fake difficulty a little bit and it could be a fun little Steam re-release.
"I want to get off Mr. Bones' wild riff" ENDED ME
"THE RIFF NEVER ENDS!!"
Bonf.
(Thanks for watching my run
i watch this to cheer myself up when life gets on top of me ❤
i hate that this was in the "awful block" i mean, whats next, clockwork knight?

(Yes I know the actual gameplay is meh at best)
If you want a game with a worse story, a blues-based soundtrack, but better core gameplay: I suggest Johnny Bazookatone.
"I'm sorry, you have too many legs" was the highlight of my afternoon
And I made some very good tacos today. Like. The bar was already high.
Mr. Bones may not have the best graphics or gameplay, but by gum, it's got _soul._
"Oh no! I have a third leg!"
I'm dying over here.
Well, that was different. This is more than a game it is a spiritual experience and our world needs more of this,
Mr. Bones is a work of unrivaled genius. I’m so excited that my favorite game was featured on such a big stage.
Best run of the marathon right here
This game is so fucking funny I'm grateful it's in an AGDQ. True history being made.
I don't know what I just watched, but I loved everything about it
Holy smokes, Lizstar is an amazing runner. She's funny, she's excellent to camera, she even drums along to the cutscenes... Why is this in Awful Block
This run is one of my favourite and most memorable runs of GDQ of all time.
'the night belongs TO ME!'
'the night's over man'
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
seriously i love this game so much it has such a charm we're sorely missing out on these days
Liz is always a highlight of these events for me! Fantastic run, great commentary as well
I'm losing my mind over how amazing this game is. Best run of the year honestly!
This game is amazing
The bat level looks like Getting Over It with Mr. Bones.
thought for sure the answer to "who's a skeleton's favorite musician?" was going to be "bono"
I've watched so many times and makes me smile everytime. Thanks for the amazing run and commentary!
Not sure if anyone will see this comment but is there a way I can hear the full version of Ronnie Montrose playing the guitar and explaining blues and depression or is it only in this game? Liz talks about it around 32 minutes into the run.
Found it: "the first thing" mr.bones soundtrack
Search “mr Bones the first thing” on UA-cam.
The music in that space void is wonderful. Occasionally I put it on to remember what the blues is all about.
Damn, the designers had some genuinely good ideas in some levels.
Man i wished this was doing with the audience so bad
I hope the day GDQ goes back to live events they go back to run mr bones again
A work of art
What a wild ride
Wow, my head's spinning!
The FMVs are actually really great!
This was an absolute fever dream. 10/10 GOTY
One of the most fun runs I've seen a long time! Had a smile on my face through it all :)
me, watching live: you can't believe there's no trombone? why trombone?
me, watching again now: OHHHH I GET i smort
A run with a commentary filled with bone puns? I can digit.
Everyone really knee'd to watch this.
i just wanna say Liz's voice is so soothing and calming
This is not a game, this is an experience
this is the exact type of game that makes me glad it exists and even gladder that i dont have to play it to see it
I don't know why this is in the awful block, this is glorious.
Ngl, I try to be against being *too* much of a fan for any level of celebrity because I think it's unhealthy to idolize people but... goddamn hearing Lizstar's voice again as she entertains us running through old janky games makes dealing with the horrible time we've all been having just a bit easier~
Liz has such a caotic Willy Wonka vibe, it's so fun to watch I love it
I remember playing this on a CRT and the colors and FMV looked amazing for time.
Lizstar makes me laugh, I like her a lot.
Hey Lizstar, thanks for playing Mr. Bones! I have loved this game for so long and it is the biggest reason I regret selling my Saturn. It was great to see it again.
The PS1/Saturn era sure had some fun big budget, high concept games - with gameplay kind of an afterthought. But I love the creativity.
I experienced this game as a kid because it was one of like 2-3 games we had on the saturn. My brother beat it and I watched him play it. It was amazing as an experience, though he will attest to it not being the best 'game'. Completely worth it though.
Never heard of this game before. Looks amazing.
Lizstar I've watched a ton of your AGDQ runs and this is by far the greatest no bones about it. But for real your wholesome personality really makes my day so from one gamer to another thank you.
Honestly, I've had this game for years and am amazed to see this game beaten at all and on GDQ no less.
That soundtrack alone is gold. Definitely need more of that in my life
LizStar has become my favorite runner. She's got great taste in games and music, I'm tellin' ya' right now.
This game deserves way more recognition and love than mockery.
I still don't understand the plot of this game. But I'm 100% okay cause Liz is my hero
Nice to see Mr. Bones getting more attention, I love this game, soundtrack is RAD.
Apparently British reviewers criticized this game as being "too American".
What a great run! Such amazing cutscenes, blew my mind!
"None of these puns are going to be humerus." Best. Remark... Ever!!!
you know what else opened with an auto scroller? Dynamite Headdy, the best game ever made
Is this Sans origin story?
18:15 i think the speed strat (guitar pun) reminds the criminal skeles of a police siren.
I remember playing this game as a kid and the nonstop feeling of WTF suprises has only been matched by maybe one other game (guitaroo man). I guess japan knows how to make funky guitar games.
Ever since i first watched it, this has become one of my favorite gdq runs of all time, almost beating out TRAG by caveman
Thank you. I truly hope someone goes full blindfold on this masterpiece.
Taco Belmont is an Adventuria reference...
I want to get on Mr. Bones’ Wild Ride.
Thanks for wild ride Liz!
'96? this game is as old as I am, it's wild that it's this detailed
"There's a baby, Bang!!!" 😂
me at the start: I want Off Mr. Bones Wild Ride!
Me by the end: *I WANT ON MR. BONES WILD RIDE!*
Right?!
There is nothing on planet Earth that could have possibly prepared me for this game
"Never heard of this game, might not watch it... Who's running it- Oh I guess I'm watching it then"
Beautiful
I played and beat this, have no regrets. Absolutely recommend it to everyone, especially people who are into retro games.
Authorblues, I am right there with you friend. Puns are pain.
e: unless they're as good as the humerus one. That...that was well-played.
That. Was. AMAZING.
The soundtrack is pretty damn sweet, gotta admit
They're not back-up-arms and legs, they're back-arms and back-legs.
This game really hit my... funny bone
I found the game quite...humerus
i love liz’s expression of awe at the name Taco Bellmont
I'm a simple dude. Lizstar says comment, like, subscribe, and I comment, like, and subscribe.
Hell yeah, Mr. Bones.
That was fricken awesome!
It was... good to the bone! :D
Three tomatos were walking down the road-
This game feels like a lost short from Heavy Metal
So much fun. What an interesting game.
Used to have a demo disk that showed a little bit of this game. Always wanted to play it as a kid. Super cool to finally see it lol
The worst part of this game is the fact it ends... Leaving you with Hollow bones
This was... amazing.
This game is actually amazing.
This was incredible, in Earthworm Jim 2 levels of "throw at all in there" genre-mashing mid-'90s weirdness.
I am sad I didn't get to see this in person. Because this game is way better then it has any right to be
Oh, there go all my bones
I've never laughed in protest before and uh..... Slim Jim made me cry and made my chest hurt
Thanks, WOW I hate this. I must play this game
Heyy the sneaky Tom Fawkes donation after the run
Make more games like this.
when she did the arms with the skeletons i knew we were in for a treat 😂😂😂
B O N F
Heck yeah, I love Necrodancer
if it have lizstar on the title u can bet im watching start to finish
