The funny thing is that most of the anime sound effects (gunshots, cars, explosions, ect) are actually from a Warner Bros library from the 30s, the same one that was used a lot in Europe for many movies, mostly the Italian Western Spaghetti ones. This library also made its way in Asia (probably due to its low price) and can be heard in a lot of movies from the 60s. Sadly, only chunks of it are available commercially in others sound libraries (such as SI Series 1000/2000, SI Network Sound, Turner Entertainment, or FSE just to name a few).
Anyway, thank you so much for those tips, which as you stated in your vids are almost inexistent online. I've created a few samples already, but your method seems way simpler. I'll see what I can get out of it. Thanks :)
The European Edition library from Hollywood Edge has a couple of anime style sound effects in there as well as a few rare sounds from Alien and Blade Runner. Also, there's a guy on freesound that is archiving and digitizing a huge sound effects library from USC and there's a bunch of great 30s and 40s sound effects there that really capture that lofi sound. @@SynaMax Thanks for the info good sir. Those two libraries from Craig Smith surely are a cave of wonders. On the Red Lib, I've managed to find (finally) the anime explosion sound effect (or at least a layer of it) that you can hear in this vid at 00:04.

You have to pay for them unfortunately (hell the album that features the overused Fire Ball Impact is $1000+ USD! I plan to listen by ear and mimick them then distort hem even further) but SoundIdeas has their playlists floating around on UA-cam now and lot of people are uploading already distorted ones ie with Smash Bros Melee so go ham go stupid go crazy
Far from true. Most anime sound effects were made with an analog ARP2600 synth since mid 60s. Back then since late 80s some sound design studios incorporated some foleys from the libraries you mentioned, but the genesis of anime sound effects started with a fucking analog synth.

Hey, I'm not a pro, but I think it's something like a fat bass note with a lot of saturation and a progressive pitch shifting. From what I know, it could work, but we'll have to experiment that :P

Another tip for achieving similar results: Use white noise and crank the resonance on a steep filter, with a combination of reverbs and delays in series you can get great effects. Combine this with frequency shifting to experiment!

The title of this video is a question I've long asked - it's so satisfying to finally hear it answered. You knocked these sounds out of the park. Excellent explanation and presentation as always.
Also, congratulations on getting the job for Just Cause 4. All the explosions, and vehicle types and environment atmosphere sounds have been such a star in the previous games. I imagine it would've been quite an adventure to bring it all together, but so flattering that they trusted you could to do it. I'm sure you've knocked that out of the park and into the stratosphere too.
As for what's next - it'd actually be awesome to see your breakdown of the previous Just Cause soundscapes and how you reinvented it (when you're finished, of course).

Knowing how is cool, but knowing why is even more.
Even after you make the sounds there's an intuition of where these sounds should go and it's worth exploring why your brain does that.
Thank you for posting this - I've been wondering about this forever. I think this is also easily done with analog gear (e.g. guitar reverb + tape speed). This makes sense, since Anime has had aspects of this sound style since the late 70's.
I really love your vids man. As an indie game dev who has more knowledge on coding than anything else, your videos are a huge help. I'm able to grasp the basics of sound design and produce basic sounds for my game that don't sound terrible.

I've been wanting to make sound effects for my own animations, and this gave me so many ideas.
This is so fascinating. When I hear the sounds you make in isolation they sound so weird and out of place, but when you put them in an anime scene it sounds so natural and fitting. So cool!

Here's a funny anecdote for you: I'm a sound design student at DigiPen Institute of Technology, and I've been absorbing your content for some of the problems I'm facing on a two-player, combat-runner game project for school (specifically this video and the punches video).
