I am a sound designer on AAA fighting games, this is not exactly accurate as to how I do it, but it does make some good points. For me most of the design is in the processing, sometimes my source is just a simple transient or explosion sound, and I like to use synthesized zaps for the kick. For tails lots of distortion and filtering gives it nice movement.
+Austin Shannon yeah dude I totally agree. I'm also working at a AAA right now and I'd probably not even go to this length if I was making something for that game. This is meant to be a process video more than a how-to. I'd probably get lazy at work and start with a great sample pack punch anyway. As long as it sounds great I'm all for it :)
I love foley sound, it feels like little Easter eggs when you're done, like you're showing someone the video and you go "Oh by the way, that sound is actually a shoe landing on some paper" it adds a different layer of creativity that you don't see much anywhere else
@@Gustavo6046 Shoryuken is an attack in Street Fighter. I might have spelled it wrong, I don't know. Basically, right after the hearing challenge (When your headphones should be at full blast if you are participating), the video cuts to Ryu using the move, and because your headphones are at full blast, its loud as fuck.
@@landencolomer1395 I know, it's just a bad joke. I thought you were somehow jokingly bragging about obtaining better results in the test by raising the volume, though. :P Also, I'm sure it's shor*i*yuken. :)
I've never, EVER, not even once in my life displayed the slightest interest in sound design, and I still don't, but for some reason I really love listening to this channel and learning all kinds of techniques I'll never be able to use
a note for anyone who cares: I don't recall exactly who it was, but, someone on youtube made a mech stomping sound by slamming his car door and playing that over a pitched down explosion and it worked really well. inspiration is a weird thing.
No doubt this is your most viewed video. From comedy, tips, quality through related things which You used to describe terms (best subbass explanation ever) and the fun process of making this sound and sounds overvall. Well done, I enjoyed any second of this.
Best punch sound is the Fierce Punch connecting on Street Fighter 2 (WW/CE/HF). That CPS-1 sound chip just made such a weighty, satisfying boom on impact.
I've been looking for something like this for months and just got recommended this by youtube. Sometimes it's not as bad as people make it out to be :D. Thank you, this is amazing
Punching a pillow is actually a good way to record such a sound. Then just add some sharp sound to make it more skin-like like clapping hands or somehting.
I've been looking forward to this! Thanks Marshall - This is really great! You're videos are everything missing from sound design information the internet.
0:42 BEEEEEOOOOOoooooouuuuuuhh...... SHORYUKEN! Just found this channel (shout-out to Mark Brown over at GMTK) and loving learning about sound design. Great stuff!
The game most used in the video: Uncharted 4 The game UA-cam picks out from the Video: Last of Us First video I've seen from you. I like your aesthetic, your humor, the music you use and the cut of your jib. Sub
Awesome video! Minor gripe- you definitely do not give enough time to enjoy the final sound. It's kind of a trend with your entire series, but this time you gave us just one punch, man.
Even though this is very basic to me, it's always a pleasure to watch your video. They are so well done. Hope to see something more advanced in the future.
damnnn your channel beats million! Love how you teach and illustrate each certain segment to highlight on each topic you want us to engage in. Subscribed!
This is seriously my favorite channel, I've never been excited when someone uploads (That's a lie, maybe Dunkey), but I get so happy inside when you upload knowing that it's going to be a quality video, keep it up!
Dude, I live next to a train line and at 4:04 when you were demonstrating the bread impact, a train went my and honked its horn and I was so confused lol. Great video by the way. Thanks (:
Your channel gave me a whole new appreciation for my favourite games! This may not be your area of expertise, but I would be super interested in you talking about sound design in racing games. Great channel!
that would be great. There is such a great disparity between how racing games sound, especially how punchy the sound of the engine is. It may be one of the areas in gaming where you actually notice and appreciate it when its done right.
>sets phone speaker volume to max to hear the sound
>goes deeper and deeper, presses ear against speakers
>*SHORYUKEN*
SKEPTICBRINGER XD that happened to me
Same thing happened to me with my dum azz
yeah at least it wasnt an earrape
same but every one in my house is asleep so it's even worst
SKEPTICBRINGER i went to the comments just to find someone who also had that happen to them lmao
All the ingredients necessary for making a knuckle sandwich.

Ahhh corniness my weakness
Finally, a random UA-cam recommendation that's actually worth watching.
Zyphyris how?

zyph the myth
This video stars with an ocean of punches
Honestly

**THUMP** *SHORYUKEN*
JESUS FUCKING CHRIST MY EARS DIED
WHAT?! IM NOT THE ONLY ONE?!
*_FUCK HIM FOR THAT_*
You shouldn't need to have them high to be able to hear the frequency...
Lmao i got a heart attack from it hahaha
i use actual human flesh thank you very much.
So realistic!
hey that's what sibling is for
I hope that's free range
Yeah, to recreate the sound of a human being brutally punched, nothing beats the real thing.
I punch my thigh
"I break your bones like celery"
...needs to be an ingame line in games
Benedikt Geierhofer in a Russian accent:
“ *I brrreak yourr bone like celerrry* “
Or a punchline in a rap battle
5:36 Syncing up the M. Bison clips with the beat of the outro song is perhaps the most satisfying thing I've ever experienced.

Austin Shannon what AAA games though?
nowonmetube I'm going to assume that he works for NetherRealm since there is an Austin Shannon in the Injustice 2 credits.
That bone breaking sound always cracks me up.
Add that to your Dark Souls Fails Compilation and I'm throwing you a like.
You're really good at editing video's. Very professional and entertaining

just lurking internet for sound effects to my videos and stumble across this dope-ness
Have you ever watched Jojo's Bizarre Adventure? Parts 3 and 4 have some incredible punch sound effects, they sound like gunshots
They have the best punch sounds I've ever heard.
Ora ora ora ora
What if they're ACTUAL gunshots
MUDA MUDA MUDA
haha
This was so fucking cool man. Sound design is one of the most fascinating forms creation I've ever seen. Fantastic job here

damn I just got this randomly recommended and it's honestly interesting as hell.

The sync on the Bison punches with the music was amazing!! Great Video dude
No doubt this is your most viewed video. From comedy, tips, quality through related things which You used to describe terms (best subbass explanation ever) and the fun process of making this sound and sounds overvall. Well done, I enjoyed any second of this.
Home cooked punch sound seems like a very delectable dish.

Me Too!!!
I’ve always been a huge fan of the punch effect from the original Indiana Jones movies, but this definitely is now in my top three
I've been looking for something like this for months and just got recommended this by youtube. Sometimes it's not as bad as people make it out to be :D. Thank you, this is amazing
The sound syncronization with the very last double kick was nice :)

This is so incredibly useful, entertaining and inspiring! It was me a pleasure to learn from you, Master McGee!
Is this the most underrated channel on UA-cam?

Just found this channel (shout-out to Mark Brown over at GMTK) and loving learning about sound design. Great stuff!
Best 6 minutes of my time spent learning today.
I like how you use Street Fighter a lot in your examples.
after watching this video I randomly thought it would be neat if the MM in your channel icon looked like a wavelength or something
This is great!
Why did UA-cam recommended me your channel just now and not earlier?! Your channel is awesome!
What an amazing ending, gosh

I see what you did there, kick this off, sweep kick
Awesome video! Minor gripe- you definitely do not give enough time to enjoy the final sound. It's kind of a trend with your entire series, but this time you gave us just one punch, man.
some of the meatiest punch sounds I've heard from a game is Street Fighter 4! Ryu's Ultra 2 is on another level
Checking this out from GMTK. Nice work -- all techniques I've heard of before, but it's great to see them in a concise, cogent video.
Even though this is very basic to me, it's always a pleasure to watch your video. They are so well done. Hope to see something more advanced in the future.
Fucking A! Every video of yours is like a treat. Next one can't come soon enough! :)
Your channel has changed my life & you don't even care Marshall 😢
He still doesn't.
Thanks to Mark Brown i found your awesome channel, keep up the good work
It seems like this could be a interesting way of creating kick drum sounds from scratch
damnnn your channel beats million! Love how you teach and illustrate each certain segment to highlight on each topic you want us to engage in. Subscribed!
The SHORYUKEN after the headphone test scared the crap out of me🤤
This is seriously my favorite channel, I've never been excited when someone uploads (That's a lie, maybe Dunkey), but I get so happy inside when you upload knowing that it's going to be a quality video, keep it up!

You should have a sound library for people to use these sounds because they are amazing!
Yo! This is fascinating. I'm excited to check out more of your stuff.
HOW AM I ONLY KNOWING ABOUT THIS CHANNEL NOW!?

i tried to put the phone's speaker next to my ears on the lowest possible frequency... shoryuken caught me off guard i really flinched xD
Your channel gave me a whole new appreciation for my favourite games! This may not be your area of expertise, but I would be super interested in you talking about sound design in racing games. Great channel!
DanielGjørTing man I know the perfect guy for an interview for this! Maybe I'll do this soon.
that would be great. There is such a great disparity between how racing games sound, especially how punchy the sound of the engine is. It may be one of the areas in gaming where you actually notice and appreciate it when its done right.
Love this stuff man. I'm currently embarking on a new module for university to do with foley and game sound and this stuff is gold!
i'm watching this cos it's interesting. But i'm not planning on making a punch sound. I just like watching smart people like you make videos.
