    Forgot to mention, this is a great video! The overall steps really helped me put an explosion sound together. I've been thinking, though, that it would be great if we could hear a few more intermediate steps to get a sense of how we get from wildly pitched samples through saturation and distortion into transient. This is, of course, just a beginner's opinion, and I don't know how other people feel about this.

  • @LukeHim
    @LukeHim 5 років тому +2

    Rough video idea: go over how games like Smash with tons of different characters and tons of different moves - which are sometimes quite samey in the sense that they're sword slashes 1, 2, 3, ... - but still need many different sounds each and how you decide which sound goes for what move. Do you just design 10 sword sounds and then go "I'll put this one on this fast sword animation and I like how this one came out, I'll use it for this other fast sword animation" or what is that process like? When there's no super clear distinction as "this is a fast swing and this is a more heavy swing".
    I really like Chrom's sword sounds for example. But I wonder if there's a reason why these sounds are on Chrom's animations instead of say lucina's. Are there different designers for some characters too usually? I think they even homogenized more sounds in Ultimate compared to Smash 4 so maybe Smash 4 is even more interesting in that regard with so god damn many different sword sounds.

    When designing explosions for modern productions it's a good idea to think about what is actually exploding and let this determine what sound components you use to make up the flavor of your sound. So if it's a building getting caught up in an explosion, you'll probably want some shattering glass for the high end, some crumbling concrete and/or wood, etc. etc.
    Also, explosions in Star Fox and other SNES games were usually created out of very low pitched snare drum samples from the music in order to save precious memory. That's some food for thought you might be able to leverage in your own design. More specifically they often retriggered the snare drum at random pitches in order to get that signature "crackling" feel.

    Marshall, I think your version's Transient & Body part not glued together well. It can be heard, that they don't fit into a real(istic) environment, with the real spaces and distances. It makes the sound sample very "infantile" for me.
    According to my idea, some dark reverb with big room, and a touch of timestretch on the Body part would needed, BUT with a heavy gating on the reverb, or with low percent "mix" setting. Maybe, some time-dependent EQ would also fit on the Transient & Body (low frequencies start to appear at the end of the Body) Then, the tail would definitely need to be started sooner, BUT with a correct ADSR on the volume.
    These are my concepts....

    hi there! very nice video!
    I had to create an explosion for a game recently and even though I followed a couple of tutorials I had to resort to layer some explosions from Soundly (at least some of the layers were mine 💁). I'll try your technique next time!
    Question: how would you actually face the task of designing an explosion for a game-job? I mean: the iPhone mic, the rubber box and such seem a way to prove the point that you can "easily" design this kind of sound with common materials...but how would you actually face the task?
    Thanks in advance!

    I cannot for the life of me figure out how you made the tail sound. Is there any further advice or tips on how to get that kind of sound? I feel totally lost. • @MarshallMcGee
      @MarshallMcGee  Рік тому +1

      Hmm I think most of that tail came from the reverb itself? At least it sound like there was a super low pitched down element in the explosion that was stimulating a reverb with like a 5s decay, and then EQ was kinda muffling the highs. But either way it's not important to make it sounds exact! Just use your ear to make something you like :)
