      @@whosoever If I hadn’t heard this song before I would tend to think the same. But also for me, when I was young and things really were dark, Metallica actually made those things bearable and hopeful. You would think it is like a spiral but for me, it wasn’t a downward spiral. I picked up my guitar and tried to play their music. And this song in particular made me pick up a pen and paper and actually write feelings down and try to play chords with them. Maybe it depends on each individual and how they listen to music and try to cope

    Pastor Rob kinda hit the nail on the head when he said some of the equipment may have had sentimental value. One of the guitars that was stolen (or it could've been an amp, or both, I don't remember lol) was given to James by his mom, who died when he was about 15 years old. I remember him saying an in interview how torn up he was about losing that one piece of gear, more for then the sentimental value rather than monetary. Speaking of money though, remember this was only their second album, and "Kill 'em All" wasn't that commercially successful, so they didn't have a lot of money at that time.... which brings me the next point! According to Kirk Hammett, that gear was stolen while they were in Denmark recording that album, and three of them were staying in a small room in the recording studio because they couldn't afford other accommodations (Lars is from Denmark and therefore had another place to stay). They were cramped up in that room for a several months, so dealing with being homesick in another country in very uncomfortable living situations, then all the gear is stolen. According to Kirk, they were all of the same mind, feeling like "this is the end." James wrote the lyrics, but Kirk kind of wrote his own with the solo, and it fit so perfectly because he was feeling the same way. Regardless of what inspired the song, it is one of my favorite songs of all time. The solo is also one of my favorite two guitar solos of all time (the other being David Gilmour's solo in "Comfortable Numb" by Pink Floyd).

      It was the amp his mom gave him that once belonged to Waylon Jennings who James said that the coolest thing he has ever seen and what makes him want to play guitar and be the lead vocalist was looking up on a stage at Waylon Jennings playing guitar and singing his songs. Just as a side note Pepper Keenan from Corrosion of Conformity said that very same thing about James Hetfeild

    This song has actually been credited with saving many lives. Sometimes just knowing that someone else feels something like what you are feeling is enough. That someone put pen to paper, and their suffering mirrors your own. And, of course, sweet sweet guitar riffs to make it go down smooth.

    • @scottclark3761

      @Frank Lopez Never heard of a suicide note referencing this song. Heard many stories crediting it with prevention. Could just be a sampling bias. But, in fact, I haven't heard of any particular song being a huge motive for suicide or self harm. And that has been studied with no statistically significant correlation, if I recall correctly.
      I would say any suicide is sad, regardless of reason. But to condemn a piece of art based on an unfounded conjecture would be censorship in an insidious manner.

      @SkyNet General I'm one of those people who's life has been saved by this song and a couple others with the same sentiment. I spent most of my life wanting to kill myself but when I got close to the edge I would listen to these songs to make me feel something, anything, because I was always numb. It helped me understand that I wasn't alone or weird or strange for these thoughts. Someone I greatly admired felt the same way and pushed on and thus I knew I could push on too.

    • @thewhalebear7073
      @thewhalebear7073 Рік тому

      @SkyNet General If a song about suicide pushes you to suicide, you were already on the edge and not looking back, the song is just the excuse you needed. But if the song resonates with you and makes you realize how flawed the actions you're considering truly are, then you're one of the lucky few that had a chance to be saved. As the commenter stated, it's not about the song itself but the fact that someone has lived through it and survived to tell the tale, to share the same emotion you're experiencing and not forfeit their life to it, it's a sign of a light at the end of a tunnel.

    • @thewhalebear7073
      @thewhalebear7073 Рік тому

      @SkyNet General Again, if a song is pushing you over the edge, then anything from the smallest inconvenience would have as well. People have a choice as to whether they want to listen to a song or not, and if someone has a depressing song on repeat and that "pushes them off the edge," then they were perpetuating it to themselves. That's like dropping a brick on my foot and blaming the brick, it's misplaced and a method to shift self-blame.

    • @thewhalebear7073
      @thewhalebear7073 Рік тому

      @SkyNet General This is America, I can sue you for breathing the same air as me from half the country away, doesn't mean I have a leg to stand on. People have been sued for dumber things.
      Music is a powerful influencer, correct, but that's all it does: influence. It cannot directly control or manipulate, only influence your thoughts on a certain subject by providing input from another perspective. If someone takes that input and uses it to reinforce their already firm belief in dying, then it's not the music that led to that action, but the person. Music isn't a call to action, Fade to Black doesn't say "Kill yourself, you deserve to die." it effectively says "I can't live like this anymore, I just want to end it all." One is a call to action, the other is sharing a personal experience.

    For Hetfield, there was incredibly big sentimental value in one of the guitar amplifiers that was stolen. It was a Marshall that his mother had purchased for him. His mother passed when James was young so the amp was a physical thing that reminded of him of his mother. So you can imagine how horrible it must feel to lose that.

    Here it is for me. I believe in my heart and my translation of the song that Kirk's solo at the end of the song is the salvation. It's the sun shining thru and the one who is suffering finding a reason to go on and live. If you interpret the song the way I do it really is the most beautiful song ever written. Along with that train of thought I find most songs James has written follows the same trend. The feeling of despair followed by the feeling of rejuvenation and life. Such a masterpiece. I hope just one person agrees or is enlightened to my translation. I love you guys and appreciate all you do

      Always felt the same as well. People say the lyrics are depressing. And they are. But that sólo at the end is the light at the end of the tunnel as you say. It's long been one of my favourite songs and although I never had depression myself, the number of comments from people who say this song saved them from suicide, under every version of this song on UA-cam, speaks to its power. Its such a beautiful solo and the fact it fades rather than finishes cleanly, implies that beauty endures and continues on. For people who can't see anything positive in the world, maybe that's enough to keep them going for one more day. Which is enough.

    The is my favorite Metallica song and of course Ride The Lightning has always been my favorite Metallica album. I can relate heavily to this song and prove that just because you are a child of God and a Christian. Doesn't mean you don't go through hard times or think of not taking your own life. This song is a big reminder to me, to never think of suicide. I get depressed at times. But I reach out to God to help me and of course I have my escapes to help with that too. Music, video games, working on cars, working on electronics and media entertainment. Well you get the idea. lol Anyway yeah I was 20 when I thought of taking my life and this was back in '95. I lost everything I owned and felt like what was the point of living. So instead of this song being a downer, it is a strong reminder to me. To not get to that point again in my life ever again. God Bless!

    The lyrics end on a downer but the finishing solo builds and builds and doesn’t stop as it fades to black and I always took that as persevering in the face of adversity. This is my favorite Metallica and my favorite song when dealing with a bout of depression.

    Been revisiting this song for decades. Never thought for one second this song was about suicide. It was about the actual moment of dying and losing the will to live, no longer having the strength to fight anymore, allowing yourself the freedom to just fade to black. Letting go. The entire album's theme is literally about death.

    This song has saved my life many times. So many times in my life I was on the edge of suicide and I would listen to songs that I identified with like this one. It let me know that I wasn't alone or weird for these thoughts. Someone else that I GREATLY admired had felt the same way and he pushed on. I knew that I could push on too.

    This song is a story of a person who committed suicide. The solo at the end is a lament for an unfortunate soul that has left this world prematurely. It is so powerful and hard hitiing, I tear up every time I hear it.

    We all need words of wisdom but we also need to know that someone has another perspective from a similar situation. Because when we are in despair, we can only see that but we just need someone to show us what we didn't realise we could see more than we thought !

    I was raised Christian but took a hard turn in my twenties. But I must say now in my late thirties it’s looking mighty biblical out there these days.
    I knew some kids in a band that has gained some traction. From my time in San Diego. They’re Christian but pretty heavy in their early albums and I had a great discussion with the lead singer once in my rebellious phase. They’re called Being as an ocean, and they have a song called “if they’re not counted, count me out”. It dealt with the main subject of the discussion I had with Joel the singer and a point of contention I had with religion. Of the ones we love potentially not being in heaven with us and that making paradise seem less so. Would love to see y’all check out they’re stuff. Their album Dear G-d is a great one even if you just listen in your spare time.

    Oh, man, you HAVE to pay attention to the lyrics of Metallica. So many songs of theirs have a message to them. Fade to Black, Master of Puppets, The Struggle Within, Creeping Death, One, Welcome Home (Sanitarium). Nobody else I can think of who writes so many songs with a message. That’s why they are the music legends that they are.

    I felt this way when I came back from Afghanistan in 2010. Being in a fighting unit I seen thing's I didn't fully understand until after happened. I shelled up for two year's with alcohol. My story is so deep it's best to leave it where it's at. Two in my unit have said goodbye when they returned home.

    Okay, so I wanna start with my love of this song. It may just be my all time favorite song, sure I listen to more technically or musically impressive music now, but this is the most nostalgic song for me and it takes me back to when I was a kid.
    Second I have been holding on to some stuff for a long while now and I want to just put it out there for the first time. I don't know if this is the most appropriate place but at this point I am just typing and can't stop myself. I regularly deal with these sorts of thoughts. I am just rife with self loathing and anger and just feeling crushing apathy. And that is particularly challenging seeing as I am Christian, leading to me feeling a lot of guilt about having these feelings. Jesus saw enough value in me that he sacrificed himself for me and I cant see any of that value in myself. So sometimes if feels like me having those thoughts and feelings are just me spitting in the face of that sacrifice. I don't know why I feel compelled to put that out here, but there is my paragraph. And just so that no-one who reads this feels especially concerned, in addition to seeking help through prayer, I am also seeing a professional to help me work on those feelings. Anyway, thanks to anyone who reads this. God bless.
