Deviled ham and mayonnaise sandwiches were a staple of my youth ('70s), especially while traveling on summer vacations: we wouldn't eat at restaurants but would have picnics at rest stops. We'd sit at a rest stop picnic table, and My mom would get out a loaf of Wonder Bread, pull a jar of Hellman's out of the cooler, pop a top off a can of deviled ham, and viola: deviled ham sandwiches. I've been a vegetarian for the past 35 years, but I still kind of miss those sandwiches.
I like deviled ham but this combination is beyond crazy. It seems like they put the names of random ingredients on a cork board and throw darts at a number of ingredients they need for a recipe (blindfolded of course) and magically you have a new taste "sensation."
Oh, yes. Canned deviled ham. A favorite of church lady luncheons back in the day. My grandma would bake bread, split it in thirds lenghtwise, and layer it with deviled ham and egg salad. Frosted with ? I don't recall, but young me thought it was fancy and delicious. 😊
The Universe has a weird and amazing sense of humor - I was just sitting here thinking that the deviled ham looked like cat food when the video was interrupted by the ads. The ad began, "You want to know what goes into your food, so why should your pet food be any different?" Yes, it was an ad for dog food! I really had to laugh. Generally what you make looks delicious, sometimes strange and different, but this one falls into the inedible category for me! Back to the video to see if you actually put this stuff into your mouth! Gosh, I love you and your videos!
This really seems like a cookbook that was put together by a bunch of editors in the 1950's that wanted catchy names but never actually stepped into a kitchen LOL. Again, I soooo enjoy your videos. I was cracking up all throughout this video!
When I was. In college, my mom s ent a care package with tang, deviled ham and peaanut brittle. I loved it. The deviled ham people also had chicken in a can that I liked.
They still make the chicken spread. I didn't like it, but I was a weird kid - I still hate canned chicken of any kind! They also made Corned Beef spread and Liverwurst spread and I liked both of those as a kid. They make a Roast Beef spread, too, but I've never tried it.
Those do seem like crazy recipes. I only have one recipe that calls for Deviled Ham and it has been a party favorite for the past 25 years. I double or triple the recipe depending on the number of people. Honey Ham Roll Ups: 1 can Underwood Deviled Honey Ham 3 oz. Cream Cheese, softened 1/4 cup Crushed Pineapple, well drained 1 Tbsp chopped Scallions 1 tsp Honey 4 -8 inch flour Tortillas Combine ingredients until well mixed; spread over tortillas. Roll up into 4 rolls. Wrap each in saran wrap and chill overnight. Slice into 1 inch slices. Serve with Honey Mustard. Honey Mustard: 6 Tbsp Mayonnaise 1/4 cup Yellow Mustard 2 Tbsp Honey Mix to combine.
LOLOL! I will have to remember "aggressively floral"! OMG! HAHAHA!!! As for deviled ham and potted meat ... that reminds me so much of my dad ... I remember it being salty, but it tasted okay ... a lot like vienna sausages, which also remind me of Pop. I think I will have to look for some deviled ham in memory of Pop. I already went hunting for "sandwich spread" ... which, to my delight, IS very good for something different on a sandwich! Thanks for the giggle and bringing a pleasant memory to the surface! 🙂💗
I’ve been binge watching your videos and this one is one of my favourites so far. If you do a best-of or fan favourite this has to be in there. Lots of people love savory on top of waffles. I like savory waffles but that’s not something that calls to my palate. Kiss Dottie (RIP) and give her some too! “Busy women…don’t make this!”
Anna, you are so brave. As a kid, I had to endure a deviled ham sandwich when we were out of bologna and cheese, tuna or peanut butter. Hated it and still do. That recipe is the stuff of nightmares! Thanks for the laughs!😂
I love deviled ham. We would prepare it with mayonnaise and spread it on white bread. Remove the crusts and cut into triangles. This was for tea sandwiches. Always took them to church teas. That was in the 50 s And sixties. Yum 😊
I’ve eaten Deviled Ham sandwiches for years. I grew up with it. Never made into a main dish. Most recently made into a finger sandwich with crust removed, spread lightly with mayo and cut into triangles. This was served at a luncheon with outer finger sandwiches. Thank you for trying something different. I don’t think I’ll be making this one either.
Underwood deviled ham is good with a level Tablespoon of cream-style horseradish, an eighth of a teaspoon of dry mustard and a half of a Tablespoon of mayonnaise mixed together and then served on top of party rye slices. Do not get rid of the fat that is inside of the can or the deviled ham will taste terrible. Deviled ham is usually used as an ingredient for appetizers or as a sandwich spread. It should not have ever been suggested as an ingredient that was in the recipe you made. It could also be used as an ingredient for a dip.
Okay that book is part of a set of 20 cookbooks, look for a big green binder with these steel rods and the rod goes into the middle of the book to hold it in the binder I am also looking for all of these as well.
Hysterical. I'm one of the few odd humans that like Deviled Ham. Growing up decades ago it was just used as a sandwich spread, usually just using 2 slices of Wonder bread. Still okay, but more of an every few years nostalgic treat. Cannot fathom it's use in this, or any, recipe. It is salty, and mixed with undiluted salty condensed soup, I'm shocked your lips weren't burning. Love the channel. Thanks for your courage, which is, surprisingly, needed to make a lot of nostalgic recipes. What were our grandparents eating?
The pork version of SOS ( dried beef white sauce) . The " shingle was toast points or leftover waffles. Remember no food was wasted in the fifties. Our parents had lived through WWII, The Great Depression, and the Korean War. In our house deviled ham was usually made from the smallest pieces from the holiday ham and was served as A meat salad sandwich. .
❤❤my father took deviled ham in his lunch box sometimes. I think he ate it on crackers. This was in the 50s and he also liked Vienna sausages. I never liked either one. I grew up in the 40 and 50. I graduated in 57, so a lot of these recipes you use as being old, I still remember a lot of them. Mom gave each of us girls a Better Homes and Gardens cookbook as a wedding gift. I still have mine. My oldest cookbook is moms home ec cookbook, I think it was the late 20s. Love watching you cook.❤❤
Oh my but I enjoyed this one! Sounded disgusting from the get-go and it did not disappoint! I love your candor! You should have made your friends come over and "savor" it. LOL. I can't wait to tune in for all your shows.
Ok it kind of sounds very scrumptious to me. I am a fan of Underwood deviled meats and actually did a video on the history of it 🤣😂🤣😂 I can only think of one thing that would be better- HAM GLAMOUR!!!!!!
@@cooking_the_books I also used a can of the Underwood Devilled chicken in a Deviled eggs three ways video and it was very good. I do have a friend who loves eating the deviled chicken every week , she loves it that much. I think for Halloween this year my costume will be “ham glamour” 🤣😂🤣😂 have I mentioned I love your channel- I just found this other channel that you will really love called unboxing Betty- it is amazing!!!!!! She is making all the recipes in a 1971 box of Betty Crocker recipe cards!!!! I’ve already ordered a set of those cards!!!!
I have to say I laughed a lot at this one. I've never had deviled ham either and definitely wouldn't want it in a can of cream of chicken soup. I will say that homemade spaghetti and tuna is delicious we had that for supper a lot when I was a kid especially during lent, not in a bun though, in a dish! LOL
One of the benefits of being a fairly new subscriber is UA-cam will send older videos to my recommendations. I'm watching this thinking..... "oh Anna, its not worth it. Seriously. You don't have to make it". That poor waffle and your expertly cooked hard-boiled egg deserved better. On the upside, I don't hate canned devilled ham and I was thinking... just zhoosh up the ham a bit and do the waffle, egg and top it with the ham. Thanks for taking one for the CtB Team on this one.
Deviled ham & mayo on toast is one of my favorite go-to sandwiches. Has been for years. Everywhere I’ve lived in the states, Deviled Ham is found on the top shelf in the canned meat aisle of the grocery store. No searching required. Yum! (Yes, I love it!)
We had deviled ham sandwiches a lot when I was growing up in the 60s and 70s. We ate it on Wonder Bread with Kraft sandwich spread. Love your channel. 💕
I love your “magic wand”! Yes, Deviled ham mixed with sweet pickle relish and Hellman’s make a “substantial” sandwich, made on small rounds of Rye and Pumpernickel made for neat ‘Party Sandwiches’ in my youth! I wonder how many tried this only once?
Lol ! Have seen most of your videos but just saw this tonight. First of all the tuna spaghetti buns? Wow. What was she thinking???? Loved your comments on the book! I think Dottie was really into that devilled ham god rest her sweet soul 😇. Keep the videos coming please!
Dottie was just trying to warn you! When I was a kid in the 70's my family didn't have a lot of money and we'd go on camping trips to Florida during the sweltering Southern Summers. My Mom would always bring the following with us on those long van trips: Loaf of white bread, cans and cans of that same deviled ham, a jar of Duke's mayo and some cheap potato chips. We'd stop at rest stops along the way and she'd make us sandwiches which we'd then eat under those covered picnic tables that rest areas often have. All I wanted was McDonald's for once! I can't even look at that canned ham without thinking of being hot, tired and cranky and the taste of deviled ham and mayo sandwiches. My folks were doing the best that they could with what they had but whoowheee... deviled ham. I could never eat that again. A lot of people must love it though if it's still around after all of these decades. Good ole Underwood.....
Love deviled ham, my mom got me started on it growing up. I usually mix it with mayo and put it on soft sandwich bread, maybe lettuce as well. Gotta like salt to admire its true beauty...LOL
I just have to say I use deviled ham for ONE recipe: It's the secret ingredient in stuffed pumpkin. Ground beef, tomatoes, onions, bell pepper, pimento stuffed green olives, a few raisins, spices and that tiny can of ham. Add egg & spoon into a hollowed out pie pumpkin, pop the stem end lid on top and bake. Served in wedges. Certainly this recipe comes from the era(s) you are exploring, but I have no idea where I got it.
I can't even imagine trying that. My family always had Deviled ham in the cabinet I think back then after the war when canned food got popular they went crazy with the recipes. Great review.
It was maybe the saltiest thing I have ever eaten! 😂This cookbook was wild! Full of 'shortcut' recipes that didn't exactly yield dishes I was excited about trying. Love these little Good Housekeeping booklets, though!
My grandma made mini deviled ham sandwiches at Christmas. Those and chicken salad arranged on a three tiered tray. We grew up in New England where it comes from..
I LOVE deviled ham and buy the 4-packs! It's delicious as a grilled sandwich. Spread the deviled ham thinly on one slice of bread. (I think the cans were bigger when I was a kid because we could get 4 sandwiches from one can then, but only 3 now. On top of the deviled ham, spread or squeeze some yellow mustard (I suggest just a couple of squiggles if squeezing or a very thin layer if spreading) and top with a slice of cheese and the other slice of bread. Then just butter the outsides and proceed as you would with a grilled cheese sandwich. You can use any cheese you like - as a child, I liked Velveeta (nothing makes a better grilled cheese!) but now I seldom have it so I use cheddar or Kraft Deluxe American. You can put the mustard on the other slice of bread instead of on the ham spread if you prefer, but I like the cheese to be next to the bread for best meltability. I've also added deviled ham to the filling of deviled eggs and they were good, too.
Deviled ham mixed with Miracle Whip, Cains' sweet relish, and spices served in a small sandwich roll was a Christmas eve option. Along with tuna or egg salad. Served with sides of pickles, potato chips, & veggies with onion dip.
I married in 1972 at 19 years old. I remember making toast with devilled ham for one of my first parties! Cannot remember if they were received with any enthousiasm but at that time, everyone was voraciously hungry all the time, so maybe it did not matter!
My mother bought Deviled ham frequently when I was growing up. I do believe we would add some additional mayo to it, even though I don't think that was required. I just remember it being really salty.
When I was a kiddo, we had both deviled ham and deviled chicken. My family got it free because my great uncle worked at Carnation. When he died, I never saw it again. So, we kids thought it was special but apparently Mom and Grandma disagreed!
As a kid I loved Libby’s potted meat and my mom tried to give me deviled ham and I didn’t like it. Well they no longer make potted meat so I might try the deviled ham one more time. 🤞🏼
in the 80's while in grad school I ate a lot of the underwood products. they were salty and cheap. They encouraged a lot of water drinking as I recall.
I like deviled ham....but yeah, that dish was scary looking from the get go 😂. You were brave to make that. There's a vintage potato chip dip that has deviled ham, cream cheese, about a teaspoon of A1 sauce and a splash of unsweetened condensed milk. It's salty, but actually pretty good.
I saw this title and was hoping this was going to be the sandwich idea my mom got from my nana. It is not! However try some cream cheese on English muffins, topped with deviled ham and placed under the broiler. Delicious. I'm 60, so coming from my nana, this is definitely vintage.
Hilarious!!! I remember Deviled Ham Spread from when I was very young, so I knew this one was going to be a dumpster fire 😂 I was thinking of ways this recipe might be salvageable, but if a person is going to make their own ham spread to cut down on the saltiness, it defeats the purpose of being a "quick n' easy" recipe.
My Momma used to make ham salad out of the deviled ham with mayo, mustard, celery, and spring onion. It was good. It's better on toast. She also did the same with potted meat. That wasn't one of my favorite bag lunches.
We ate deviled ham growing up, however, more often my Mom would grind up ham using an old fashioned meat grinder, add some Mayo and an egg or two. We were poor when I was growing up and it was cheaper for my mother to grind her own ham.
Every five years or so I’ll buy spam to see if I still don’t like ii. Every 10 years or so I’ll try deviled ham. The answer is always a big nope. A big, “I not yike it!”, as our youngest will say about things he doesn’t like. 🤣 Mom used to fix both quite often when we were growing up because they were inexpensive. When things are tight you cut costs where you can.
I've thought Underwood deviled ham was an appetizer ingredient. I have a delish stuffed mushroom recipe using it. Those tiny cans seem overpriced compared to using ham salad, homemade or deli for most lunches. Was deviled ham cheap in the 50's?
A typical lunch for me as a child in the 50's, was canned spaghetti or canned baked beans on toast. So, I get the bread bowl with spaghetti, but NOT with canned tuna on top! That deviled ham looked like cat food!
This is why Julia Child bringing French cuisine to America was a big hit. Canned, frozen, shelf stable foods of post WW2 era America weren't rationed and readily available but not the greatest.
I still wonder if I got a can that wasn't quite good. It was a strange taste to it! Or maybe it was just this particular combination of ingredients that didn't make my tastebuds sing. 😂
Ad executives must be responsible for that book, holy moly. I've had deviled ham and in the right circumstance it is pretty good, but that combination is an abomination. lol.
So, deviled ham w/ mayo or liverwurst sandwiches where common in our house growing up. Yum! This application, no. Nice try though and no, I would not have tried that sauce, lol Peace
Deviled ham and mayonnaise sandwiches were a staple of my youth ('70s), especially while traveling on summer vacations: we wouldn't eat at restaurants but would have picnics at rest stops. Yes! Deviled ham and mayo. Yum! So simple but so good!
Cold deviled ham with pickles on white bread, maybe some mayonnaise. I remember that as a kid.
I like deviled ham but this combination is beyond crazy. It seems like they put the names of random ingredients on a cork board and throw darts at a number of ingredients they need for a recipe (blindfolded of course) and magically you have a new taste "sensation."

Gosh, I love you and your videos!
I remember as a kid in the ‘70s/‘80s having deviled ham with mayo and sweet pickle relish mixed in and spread on dark rye bread (so fancy lol)
We did finely chopped ham, mayo and sweet relish sandwiches. You could even get it at the luncheon counter I worked at in 1970's.
That sounds delicious.

My mother bought Deviled ham frequently when I was growing up. I do believe we would add some additional mayo to it, even though I don't think that was required. I just remember it being really salty.
Oops, obviously we used it like a ham salad for sandwiches.
When I was a kiddo, we had both deviled ham and deviled chicken. My family got it free because my great uncle worked at Carnation. When he died, I never saw it again. So, we kids thought it was special but apparently Mom and Grandma disagreed!
I have a set of 20, Including Quick 'n Easy, in a "tailor-made" binder. Fun to look at, though I haven't actually cooked anything from the books.
Wow!
Ah, deviled ham. One of the food items from my childhood that I will never, ever eat again.
Hahahahha life is too short for recipes like this hahahaha
I like it on sandwiches. I'm going to try it with the hardboiled egg and on a waffle with some mayo. Not the soup though.
I do like Deviled Ham. And now I need to go to the store and try to find it LOL Not sure if I would like this recipe though. I like on bread
Is Deviled Ham the same as Potted Meat? My momma made that mixed with salad dressing, pickles and boiled eggs. Brings back lots of good memories.
No no no no no. That looks like some underworld version of Eggs Benedict.
My Mom used to put SOME of the deviled ham into egg salad.
My Momma used to make ham salad out of the deviled ham with mayo, mustard, celery, and spring onion. It was good. It's better on toast. She also did the same with potted meat. That wasn't one of my favorite bag lunches.
I like deviled ham...and I actually grew up eating the deviled chicken (same brand) on white bread...my lunch in the 60's and 70's haha
We ate deviled ham growing up, however, more often my Mom would grind up ham using an old fashioned meat grinder, add some Mayo and an egg or two. We were poor when I was growing up and it was cheaper for my mother to grind her own ham.
I like deviled ham mixed mayo sandwiches.
I like deviled ham, but stirred well from the can and on some rye crisp/ hard-tac. I would never attempt to cook it with something else. 😂
Hey I've got these books in a massive green binder.
I loved deviled ham when I was a kid, but tried it several years ago and wondered why I loved it so much. It's ok. Salty.
Don't know about Ham Glamour, but now I know if I ever need a name for a cool band it will be Glam Hammer.
Every five years or so I’ll buy spam to see if I still don’t like ii.
Every 10 years or so I’ll try deviled ham.
The answer is always a big nope.
A big, “I not yike it!”, as our youngest will say about things he doesn’t like. 🤣
Mom used to fix both quite often when we were growing up because they were inexpensive. When things are tight you cut costs where you can.
💕
I've thought Underwood deviled ham was an appetizer ingredient. I have a delish stuffed mushroom recipe using it. Those tiny cans seem overpriced compared to using ham salad, homemade or deli for most lunches. Was deviled ham cheap in the 50's?
Loved deviled ham
Lol 😂 I have no words!! 🤣
A typical lunch for me as a child in the 50's, was canned spaghetti or canned baked beans on toast. So, I get the bread bowl with spaghetti, but NOT with canned tuna on top! That deviled ham looked like cat food!
I love deviled ham on egg buns
I actually love deviled ham!!!
Take 2 slice's of sandwich bread spread some mayonnaise on it then the deviled ham it's good you may like it like that
I don't eat ham so never had deviled ham but as a kid I used to eat potted meat. I suppose it's similar
This is why Julia Child bringing French cuisine to America was a big hit. Canned, frozen, shelf stable foods of post WW2 era America weren't rationed and readily available but not the greatest.
Homemade deviled ham is actually pretty good. I can only imagine the stuff in a can is close to vile lol
I love deviled ham!
I still wonder if I got a can that wasn't quite good. It was a strange taste to it! Or maybe it was just this particular combination of ingredients that didn't make my tastebuds sing. 😂
@@cooking_the_books it's not for everyone, an acquired taste maybe?
I don't think I've ever eaten deviled ham but I do enjoy Spam
It’s the WISH version of Eggs Benedict lol
Your comment is bang-on and deserves many, many likes! 😁😂
I like deviled ham. Mayo and some sweet relish on bread
