  • My Craigslist score of the year! A 1970 Dodge D200 Camper Special Sweptline pickup with under 35,000 original miles. I bought this for $2400 and it's in great shape. I have to fix the front bumper and grille because the owner hit a deer driving about 25 mph. I'll need to weld in a new driver side floor due to rust damage. Ultimately, I'd love to install this body on a dodge W250 cummins diesel chassis. I think this would look great as a four wheel drive. I'll work on this project over the next couple years. The frame swap would make some great videos. Stay tuned!

I had a 69 and it was the best truck I ever owned! I was driving about 30 miles each way to work and sold it because it beat me to death when empty! Road like a dream with 2 ton on it!

If you put a cummings in it you may need to beef up the front springs etc.. That engine is much heavier than what was in those I think.

That's a score, mine a 71 W200 was on the way to the junkyard dead, flat and full of rust. I DD now. I have a Mercedes OM617 that im debating about dropping it in. But the 318-3 runs strong now. Ive had several of these from 64- 74 and this one without doubt its the tightest steering one ever! I continually tinker on it getting ready to swap out bushings on front springs and rebuild D44hd front end.

This video is 5 years old, whatever happened with the truck?
I have 3 swept line trucks, a 64 w200, a 67 w100, and a 70 d200. I’m gonna make 1 nice original 67 w200 out of the two 60s trucks, and the 70 is getting the body swapped onto a 1st gen Cummins w350. I think the body swap is the easiest way to get all the benefits of more modern gear including making the truck 4x4, and especially power steering… and I think a d200 front axle will be maxed out with a Cummins on it anyways…

It's still sitting!! I haven't had time. I rebuilt the carb one year ago this month, put it on and haven't started it!! I need to drain the fuel tank and looks like replace a freeze plug. I need to repair the floors and I'm still thinking about old school 4x4.

@@57moto59 bro get to work!! I just swapped the front axle out of the 64 to the 67 today, the og axle had a bad knuckle… tomoro is new shocks and leaf helpers on all 4 corners, thena full tune up on the slant 6 if I got time, then I gotta figure out my throttle linkage cause I swapped the carter bbs for a Holley 1920… she’ll be back on the road by next week.

Fix what's wrong with it an drive it original... please no body swap I hate it when people mutilate these nice old trucks.

    • @57moto59
      @57moto59  5 років тому +1

Yeah. With such low mileage and great condition truck, it's difficult to cut it up. I'm going to fix the issues, clear coat it and see how it drives. I've thought about the swap and seeing if I can do it in a manner that I don't cut the truck up. Then keep the OEM chassis so it could be put back as is or so that the next owner can put it back to original if they choose.

I'm not onboard with any of his proposed modifications.Doesnt seem as though he appreciates the originality and condition of what he has.Something can be modified anytime ,but try putting it back original ,not so easy ,huh?

A 5.9 fits in you just can't run factory fan you have to go electric I got one I'm doing right now 68 d200 had a 318 4 speed I did 5.9 auto from 91 d350 good luck with your build

I absolutely love the Cummins engine. I have owned, many first-gens. Great trucks! But, please don't mutilate that beast by trying to get a Cummins under the hood. It doesn't fit! The engine compartment is too short. With core-support mods, you can get everything in there if you go non-intercooled. But, it puts the engine too far forward for proper weight bias. And, you will end up with a very quirky driving truck. The proper way is to cut/clearance the firewall/floor. This means you can not use the factory HVAC, and just creates a TON of work. Maybe you are up for that (its not a bad thing). I'm just saying, it is a huge project to do it correctly. I have that trucks twin bye-the-way. Mine is 383 powered. I think if you drove it you would forget all about that Cummins. A big-block swap would be much easier/cheaper. Stand a better chance of getting successfully completed. And, there is no shortage of torque with a properly tuned Mopar big-block. Fuel mileage is the only thing the Cummins has over the big-block if you ask me. And, like I said, I LOVE the Cummins. But, having owned/driven both extensively? I honestly prefer driving my 383 truck. A 440 with its 4.25" stroke would up the torque quite a bit (I have a 71' forged crank 440 tucked away for later, LOL)

Thanks. That's some great info. I haven't done anything yet other than start to repair the front bumper and grille. Floors will be next. What do you think about a 4bt so I don't have to cut the firewall? I'm having a hard time moving forward with cutting the firewall, it's just such a nice truck with low miles, I don't think I can cut it up.

I disagree whellieking!!! A Cummins will fit in this truck in fact you can put two 5.9's with compound turbo's in this truck with minimal fabrication. Plowboys Diesel in Illinoi has built one. You can build with intercooler and the frame mounts will match with the Cummins mounts. You do not know what your talking about!

@@57moto59 4bt fits a whole lot better than a 6bt. The truck will also drive a lot better with less weight way out front. Biggest down-side of a 4bt is vibration. They shake, A LOT! But, they are awesome, and you could probably get up in the 30's for fuel economy.

No they are nicer as two wheel Drive , and even if it was a total restoration (not just a rehab) keep it original , if any accessories do it only from that era, the only exception is the Cummings Diesel!

Thank You for saving this beautiful classic Dodge truck from being sent to a scrap yard. The floor rust is a result of the wing vent seal leaking which is a common issue with the old Dodge trucks. Based on the condition of the driver seat the truck does not have 34,+++ miles on it but that is irrelevant. You can drop a Cummins 5.9 (6 BT) or a 3.9 (4 BT) into this truck very easily. Check out www.dieseltruckresource.com/forums/ and look at 1st Gen for any questions you may have. I know you posted this 2 years ago but I'm hoping this will help with your build. Good Luck you found a gem in the rough!

I would be willing to bet it was the windshield leaking, or the cowl, that caused the rust. The cowls on Sweptlines were not well sealed when they were new. Brand new trucks had leaks at seams and pinch-welds up in the cowl area.

I'm not sure, but facebook has a couple of groups you can join for the sweptline trucks. Tons of guys with a bunch of knowledge that should be able to answer any question you have.
