  • Wrestling is the most important of the Mongolian culture's historic "Three Manly Skills", that also includes horsemanship and archery. Genghis Khan considered wrestling to be an important way to keep his army in good physical shape and combat-ready. Cave paintings in Mongolia dating back to Neolithic age of 7000BC show grappling of two naked men and surrounded by crowds. Wrestling was a military sport intended to provide mainly strength, stamina, and skills training to troops. When a male child is born in a family, Mongols wish him to become a wrestler

More information about Bokh, the folk style of Mongolian wrestling:
First, the rules are the best. There are no weight class limits or time limits. Because of this, wrestlers are all giants. You have to wear traditional dress like you see in the video. The medal on your hat symbolizes your rank.
In order to win, you have to make your opponent touch the ground with any part that isn't their feet. The rules and dress vary slightly by province. In some places, you're allowed to go down on your knee(s) without losing. In other words, the first man to throw the other man on the ground wins. This makes Bokh very similar to Judo and Sumo.
Like all other folk wrestling, Bokh is extremely old. Current archaeological research shows Mongolian wrestling to be at least 7000 years old.
The Nadaam festival in Mongolia happens in mid July where Mongolian wrestling compete to improve their ranks. Consecutive wrestling wins improve ranks.
Bokh is also popular in China.

I completely admire and respect this style. It's so similar to watching bears fight in the wild. It's such a natural form of wrestling. The only thing I'd say is missing is that it could include hitting, but then of course you lose some degree of incentive for the sport. If you don't have some limits like eliminating punching, the sport could easily lose some of its dignity and degrade into outright warfare on the field. But at the same time I'd love to see these athletes Duke it out. Wonderfully admirable sport, regardless! Some of these men would have easily been warlords, lords amongst men.

I want to go to Mongolia to wrestle in that style. It's so easy and simple to understand that anyone can follow their rules. But the Mongolians have men who are titanic in strength. I have no chance against such giants. They can knock a horse over.
