It's the oldest Shinkansen still in service but even in 2023 it looks like something straight out of the future. I did some research on the 500 series and it's absolutely unbelievable how much advanced technology and materials went into its design. It's like the McLaren F1 of trains-decades ahead of its time and still futuristic decades later.
I think the 500s series were the most beautiful, most pleasant shinkansen trains ever built after the 0 series. They are just beautiful, proportional, and they have a lot of feel of speed. The newer ones has much bigger nose to come up with the tunnel boom effect.
Like many others, I find the 500 series to be the most attractive train to have travelled on the Tokaido/Sanyo lines. With the rounded body shape, they seem to have more room inside the cabin. It will be sad when all units are finally retired.
It’s hard to believe the Shinkansen 500 series is considered “old” because it’s streamlined, fighter jet looks hold its age so well! Maybe JR should make a 2023 version of the 500 series!
I just came back from Japan finally living my dream of traveling on the shinkansen. I took the nozomi 700 from Tokyo to Kyoto and I was mind blown on how sturdy, robust and fast these trains are. I never got the chance to see the older trains but after watching this video of the 500 I feel this looks waaay better than the design of the 700. And man look at the windows. Watching the mt Fuji through this window could have been amazing 😍 From the outside, this train looks like an aircraft on tracks.
Awesome video. Thank you for the tours around Japan. I love the 500. What I find interesting is the castle architecture- Traditional Japanese. Normally, when I hear castle I think of the stone European types. Thx for making these!
The 500 series used aluminum honeycomb welded round cross section for the first time at that time, and the windows were double and curved, so the manufacturing cost was very high. For this reason, from the 700 series onwards, the car body is a square body that uses extruded aluminum to reduce costs. What you feel when you ride it is that this round body has less air shock waves when passing each other. However, this structure has been used for the longest period of 26 years since the Shinkansen was released because the aluminum body of this structure is less damaged by air shock waves and cracks are less likely to occur. If you continue to send out on UA-cam that everyone loves this vehicle, they will update it and operate it for a long time.
This is some really interesting info, I never thought that the shape can have such benefits. It's quite amazing this vehicle is still running, considering the 700 Series is already retired haha. Thanks for sharing!
Hiroshima is a fascinating City. There are MANY Sites to are. I LOVE the Blend of the Traditional and the Modern. The Japanese really Know how to ENJOY life . The Shinkansen trip was Simply fascinating as showed in the Video. I loved the Lighting Speed of the Bullet Train.
Very Interesting. Beautiful train, love the styling. I visited Japan in 1976 and rode the original bullet train. A lot has happened since then. It's fascinating to watch. Thank you.
Great trip, Shinkansen 500 series is one of my favourite High Speed Train. To be honest, this train should be produced again with newer generation like 700 series. I like the 500 series design, feel faster. And by the way nice strolling around Hiroshima.
Same with the Shinkansen 400. Age of the train in Japan is just a number it's so sad that Shinkansen 400 retired so fast and I'm disappointed with the 700S having the same design as the 700A
I love your cool videos. I had to take early retirement due to health issues and, whist my husband and I used to travel extensively all over the world - those days are over for me as I am no longer allowed to fly. Japan was on our next go-to plan until I had my sudden, unexpected problem. But with you, I have seen beautiful shrines, encountered beautiful people, seen stunning land scapes, eaten strange and exotic dishes, experienced unique hotels and seen magical destinations. I find it amusing that the black sesame seed ice cream is sold as asphalt ice cream because my husband thinks they smell of tar! 😂😂
Absolutely love the look of the 500 series Shinkansen. Probably my favorite looking train of all time. It's certainly not fast enough for express lines anymore, but I'm still glad to see it in service for the local line.
The 16 car sets have a top speed of 300 km/h, still higher than the current top speed on the Tokaido Shinkansen, and the 8 car sets have a top speed of 285 km/h, the same as the speed limit on said line.
Still one of my favorite trains, and best looking exterior wise. Blows my mind this thing is 26 years old. This would easily be the fastest and most modern looking train in North America now and it wouldn't even be able to reach its top operating speed in the US due to aging infrastructure.
On a minor note, the current top speed of the 500 series Shinkansen cars is 285 km/h. As a result of modifications, change of current collectors and shortening of train length (16 cars to 8 cars), the top speed was dropped from 300 km/h to 285 km/h.
Another fun and interesting trip! I wish we had shinkansen in the US. California is still working on high speed rail between San Francisco and Los Angeles, but if and when it's finally ready, I'm sure it won't be anywhere near as fast as shinkansen. Hiroshima looks lovely -- the main street with the streetcars reminds me of downtown San Francisco. I'm hoping to visit in the spring of 2024 as part of a choral trip. That asphalt ice cream looks delicious. I love black sesame as well! And the okonomiyaki was making my mouth water. I always have to be careful about watching your videos on an empty stomach, because they always make me hungrier! :) Oh, I almost forgot -- congratulations to Japan for winning the World Baseball Classic!
I have a soft spot for the 500 series for its inclusion in the anime, "The King of Braves GaoGaiGar" as part of the titular robot's combination. Crazy that this train still seems just as futuristic and high tech yaears later.
I travelled with that Shinkansen 500 series but that is unfortunately already 12 years ago.😅😅😅 Great train!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🤩 You Japanese people are fortunately very careful with your stuff. The train still looks beautiful after 26 years. You should come here in the Netherlands and see what a train looks like after that time. The trains here are filled with graffiti within a year anyway.... I hate that!!!
Yeah, it’s interesting the level of care that is taken from maintaining the train cars to the very tracks they ride on. And the fact that the Shinkansen hasn’t had a single fatally since it first started running with the 0 series trains.
Great video. Series 500 is the most beautiful high speed train. A shame that so few remains. Thanks for the travel experience, I never had the chance to travel inside one, just seen one Kyoto station and the one in the museum. I recently bought the first car of the museum series of just the 500. 700 is fast, confortable, but don't look great. 500 was the fastest train at commercial speed, but not maximal speed. TGV Atlantique was above 515 km/h in 1990. Hiroshima trams are cool, but quite slow, as they don't have the priority. Hiroshima style okonomiyaki rocks!
I am simply amazed by Japanese . They love their country, they worked towards the country’s development. It’s difficult to defeat the country even when they don’t have strong army

500 Nozomi, the most beautiful Shinkansen ever.

The 500 series are amazing - they look like a space-ship thats been put on rails!

Its a great video keep it up good job

Awesome video. Thank you for the tours around Japan. I love the 500. What I find interesting is the castle architecture- Traditional Japanese. Normally, when I hear castle I think of the stone European types. Thx for making these!
500 series maybe the oldest, but the most beautifull train ever

🌈Happy St.Patrick Day everyone 🍀

Still looks modern. My favorite Shinkansen model has always been the first one though. That bullet nose is just so iconic.
The JR500, in my opinion, was and is the best looking of all bullet trains. Absolutely timeless.

Another awesome video. And yes, more travel videos. They are the best.
Amazing video! :) But the best part is where Zenitsu sits at the window⚡

Hello from Ukraine. Watched in one breath and looking forward to the next video.
Ohhh.. u always make me surprised in every videos u upload. I'll wait for your nxt video. Have a good day.
Among Shinkansen it may not be the fastest or the newest but it's the best looking.

Amazing looking trains ! 👍
