My introduction to Ella Raines, and the start of my fascination with black and white films. I randomly watched this on Talking Pictures years ago, and have watched it many times since. A brilliant film with a brilliant cast.
I agree - the film of SF is fun to watch. I lived in Larkspur (just north of SF) where the town scenes were filmed. Larkspur hasn’t changed very much since 1949. The top of Nob Hill hasn’t change much either. I lived about half a mile down the street where Donlevy is talking to the sign painter. I think that road was the main road through Marin County in 1949 - before Highway 101 was built (not sure though).
Tony Barrett who played Jim Torrence the killer, was mostly known from his work in radio thought out the 50's, mostly in villainous roles. As handsome as he was I can't imagine why he wasn't in more films. Brian Donlevy gave an outstanding performance, as usual. One of Hollywood's finest actors.
I love this film. Luckily I have a horrible memory for films, so I forget key details of the plot - like exactly what happens out on that highway. So I can enjoy them over and over. Ella Raines was a looker, and good actress too.
The scenes with Ella Raines falling in love with Brian Donlevy are magical. Just after the war when America was the greatest country in the world. Now a shadow of its former glory.
Have you ever heard the story of that black servicemen, Issac Woodward, who was beaten blind by those southern cops in 1946? Not such a great country for a certain type of people. I guess you aren’t one of them.
Just because you aren't successful doesn't mean you have to bash America! I immigrate to America from Russia 1999 and I think this is the greatest country ever!
For the record, Brian Donlevy is 19 years older than both his film wife, Helen Walker, and likewise coincidentally than Ella Raines who are about 28 or so, and 7 years younger than Mae Marsh (as Mrs. King (Marsha's mother)) who is about 54 or 55. In other words, Donlevy is just barely old enough to be both the father of Raines and Walker and could be the younger brother of Marsh. Got to love these Hollywood May/December romances even though at the 1:15:00 mark Mrs. King taps Donlevy on the shoulder as if he's "25." In reality, he's about twice that at 48. Tony Barrett as Jim Torrence is about 4 years older than both Walker and Raines. Kind of sad the way the story ends. I bet they'd have been happier in a small town running a garage and being among friends.
La Brian donlevy tenía 55 años en este film,Ella Raines(la que hace de 1°esposa) y Helen Walker(la que hace de 2°esposa) ambas 29 años,hollywood, trataba muy bien a los protagonistas machos
Advice to men: don't let your wife name you softy. The name may begin innocently but she'll lose a little respect for you every time she says it and especially when you say it. Better names: Brick, Rock, etc.
How can two Bekins movers, see a man, jump in a car, drive away by himself....crash and die..........not be there to tell the story....after they find the brief case in the Van?.....how can the Grand Jury find a case of Murder when the guy died in a firey crash??????? Kind of a big plot hole here.

Not to mention the great Charles Coburn, along with a very attractive Ella Raines and great photography of my hometown, SF.

Ernest Laszlo is one of the great noir cinematographers. He shot Kiss Me Deadly, one of my 8 all time favorite noirs.

He WAS a little bit on the sappy side…
Funny, it had a few similarities to Roman Holiday - Aristocrat falling off the radar to live a normal life..
