For anyone who is struggling with a mac and a window laptop to connect it together, I hope this comment can help you out. Try deleting the logitech+ app on macbook, downloading again, and then turn on the firewall. On the option of the firewall settings, choose allow logitech+ incoming connections. I struggled 4 hours w/ that thing and don’t want you to deal w/ it.
I started using Synergy at work in 2011. We had a Windows desktop for all the business apps, and a Linux workstation for the development, testing, running virtual machines, etc. It works great for us. Around 2016 we got MacBooks for testing on those as well, but we didn't get an additional monitor, we use the MacBook display directly. Adding the Mac as a third device was easy. Its great not needing to use that crappy Mac keyboard. Also, Synergy converted its code from opensource to proprietary sometime between 2012 and 2016. Synergy started charging money for the software. However, the original opensource code was branched to form Barrier. Barrier remains opensource. Barrier does not have quite as many features, but all the keyboard/mouse functionality is there. It just lacks the "nice-to-haves" like being able to drag and drop files between the machines, or transfer files.
Hi guys tech noob here. i want this same set up but my work laptop restrict me from downloading any apps - is there any way around this? I basically have two separate laptops connected to their own monitors (so two laptops and two monitors in total). I wanted to use the same mouse and keyboard for both without having to always click a button to tell the system I now want to type on the second laptop. Etc. Any suggestions that can override the need to download an app?
But in this case server needs to be always on or at least on when you want to use second PC. I recently dealt with this problem myself but I had an added computer of my significant other who could also connect to the dock. I solved it using a KVM (usb only). Set up 2 Monitors 1 Dell Docking station ( For any laptop to come and use desk) 1 Desktop PC 1 KVM switch Desk top and Docking station connected to both monitors in independent inputs. They both connect the USB to the KVM and all my USB peripherals are connected to the KVM ( Keyboard, Mouse, Headphone USB dongle). I opted not to go for a more fancy KVM with HDMI multiplexing since the monitors had plenty of inputs and getting the best performance for the video output requires more high end KVMs. Whenever I adopt some speakers on the desk I will incorporate the 3.3mm Jack splitter or find alternative solution. Maybe with more high end KVM if I don’t need to use at same time.
Thanks for helping me decide on a monitor. I just got an imac mini, so I needed a good monitor to use for the mini and my pc. It's nice to see someone actually showing it in action for a change. Once again, thanks :). BTW Synergy is awesome as well, as it allows you to copy/paste between both machines
Spilt screen option question. Can you switch between two computers displaying at the same time to either one? You are displaying Mac and PC, can u do Mac only, then switch to PC only, and so on? Thx 😊
This was sooo helpful. Thank you for posting this. Synergy was way cheaper and easier to use than a keyboard that you need to click the button every time to switch.
I use Synergy to share single keyboard/mouse with 2 PC and 1 Mac (and sometimes Raspberry Pi as well). I DON'T recommend audio splitter! Instead, use the headphone out of mac to line in of PC, and then enable monitoring in windows audio. The better solution would be to use a simple audio mixer like Behringer, which costs around $80+, but well worth the price.
The audio mixer is very useful here. Not just to make fast adjustments to the volume of each, but also in sound clarity. Due to the capacitance/inductance of having the output stage of two sources being connected together, it does weird things with the frequency response. Imagine a multi-band equalizer where someone decides to just crank one way up, and another one way low, but the rest are all in the middle. It generally sounds muffled but may have prominent high pitch sounds that are not desirable.
if you plug in keyboard/mouse/other usb peripherals to the dock, how does the laptop and desktop pc share them? what cable goes from dock to PC to use all the USB stuff? and what about ethernet cable?
1:57 You can't merge two outputs like this. This is like shorting. One driver could be trying to raise the voltage (that's how speaker outputs work, by dialing voltage up and down at audible frequencies) and the other could be actively trying to pull it low. This causes a tug of war between the two and they may even burn each other off. You have to use a mux chip to do this properly. There could be some product that uses a mux chip, use that instead.
question regarding the mouse moving screen to screen like synergy.. how else can you move the mouse/keyboard from screens? You clicked your mouse to switch, what are other options? Microsoft's Mouse without Borders works much the same as Synergy...but it's free. I have an MX Keys and MX3 connected by bluetooth to both my work laptop and personal PC. They switch to whichever monitor you are moving to. You can also cut and paste, etc between devices.
Yes, however Mouse Without Borders only works on Windows. If you want to use a Windows computer and a Mac (or even Linux) you have to choose something else. In such case Synergy is a perfect choice.
Hope you can help me. I recently bought the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 Ultrawide. I have it connected to my MacBook Pro M1 13" through a CalDigit TS4 dock. Thunderbolt from Mac to dock, display-port cable from dock to screen. My problem is, when I'm doing my online seminars, I use MS Teams. I wish to split my screen (two 27" screens in effect), one screen showing my participants, and the other screen showing the content e.g. my virtual white board which I wish to share with the group. The problem is the MacBook Pro M1 won't support two screens apparently, something I only found out later. Do you know how I can manage this? I can't even use the Macbook screen at the same time. If I don't put in in clam-shell mode, the Samsung won't receive the content from my Mac. Please help 🙏

I've been using Synergy since about 2008. There is a free version (actually a few I think) and I just use that. Agree, if your outputs are not protected, using a splitter you are sending electricity to your output of your other computer and vica versa. Sending el to an output is a dangerous thing. Barrier is the opensource package that was forked from the original Synergy just before they turned the license proprietary. It supports Windows (XP and later), Mac, Linux, RaspberryPI, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, up to 16 devices concurrently. It supports the all the keyboard and mouse functions, plus clipboard sharing. They say they focus on just the core functionality, make sure it works well, rather than adding nice to haves like drag and drop or file sharing which have other solutions already.

Do you have a solution for splitting multiple usb devices between a Mac and a pc? I do have a basic 4 port hub split between 2 computers. In order to expand the 4 port hub I was going to daisy chain additional hubs behind it so that when switching the automagic transfer of 10+ usb devices, this would include my digital mixer, I use the usb interface for the sound and would prefer that it switches between both Mac and PC rather than using a separate audio cable.
But how does it all work though ? Can I drag and drop things from the PC to the Mac ? Or like, if I open a window on the PC (like File Explorer or some browser), can I drag it to the Mac and so on ?

I have a single monitor with 2 macs that I want to switch inputs and video input over depending on the mac that I'm working on. Is there a way I can do this seamlessly with synergy?
Thanks, buddy! Fantastic job and thank you for clearing this up. I am building a Threadripper PC machine for my 3D workflow, but I do not want to stop using a MAC setup. To add to your Synergy setup, this is also a fantastic program if your PC is located in another location altogether or perhaps in a different room from where you usually work. is there a way to get both of the "computers" to use like the same external SSD at the same time and just using 1 to transfer files between the 2 computers
Now that is has been 3 years, has anything changed? I'm planning to have a similar set up and wondering if you have discovered new tech to accomplish this. Thank you!
When Synergy worked, it was awesome. When it failed (it kept giving me a firewall error despite not changing anything in my network) and now is useless. One recommendation they provide is to uninstall then reinstall the software from scratch. Now if fails based on saying that I don't have a compatible OS. I have given up...
If you have two computers sharing one monitor, is it possible to share the screen of both computers using a screen sharing tool like team viewer or each computer needs to start it’s own session?
I know it's a pretty old video, but maybe I'll get a answer. When using this synergy and the PC is the server, are mouse and keyboard working for the macbook when the PC is off or does it always have to be turned on? Btw great video
Does anyone try something lite this on Dell C3422WE? Monitor has integrated KVM. I want to use Macbook M1(USB C) and Lenovo (HDMI) laptop side by side to one monitor (with same keyboard and mouse connected to monitor). Do you think it will work? Thank you.
I have a viewsonic monitor - VX2453 series - model # VS13816. Will I be able to duplicate on this monitor? Which software will do this - since all software on viewsonic website is for VX and other, but not for VS - viewsplit or vDisplay. Is there any other way?
Logitech Options allows you to use the same keyboard and mouse on 2 computers, but they have to be on the same network. If you are using a VPN on one computer (e.g., a work computer using VPN to log into a work network), then the computers are no longer on the same network and you can't share. I expect Synergy has the same issue, no?
Alternatively you can buy a DP KVM Switch for around $50. Ugreen do a really good one. (Also HDMI) You plug your keyboard/mouse dongle into the USB ports in the front. HDMI/DP in the back. And then just press a button to switch between computers. This way you don't need to have a server running at all times. I have my MacBook connected to a dock. Then from the dock into the DP Switch. My PC into the DP switch. And then the Switch into my monitor (LG 38 ultrawide) I also have a USB drive in the switch as well. So I can quickly transfer files between computers if I need to. The UGreen is particular good because it does 8k at 60mhz, or 4k at 240hz. Which is great as my monitor does 166 at 4k 1600p. Also HDR as well... Using the switch is the ONLY way to use my K100 AIR from Corsair on BOTH my computers. I simply plug the Corsair into the switch, and then install the software on both Mac and the PC. This way I have full functionality of the software, macros and lighting. As far as each PC is concerned. It's as though you are connecting/disconnecting the USB. My Mac complains about ejecting the USB drive, but hey. You can silence that if you need to. You don't have to use UGreen, but if you want to use something like a Corsair/Logitech RGB keyboard you will need a POWERED version.
Hi I'm looking for the best way to connect a Mac mini and a windows laptop with a dock to my Alienware 3225QF monitor with same keyboard and mouse ??? Please help and keep up the great work!
This seems pretty neat. A question though: What if at any point you want to focus 100% on what's going on in one of the 2 devices? Is there a quick way to just switch to 'Full screen' for just one of them?

How do you do it if you don’t wanna display both at the same time on the monitor but wanna be able to switch from either without having to disconnect or connect any cables, that’s what I’m trying to figure out, I want both my Mac mini and pc laptop hooked up to the same monitor so I can use either when I want if that’s possible

Hi Jessie, I have a question I been searching the web and UA-cam to see how can I use the duel screen to have my computer on the left and my ps5 on the right at the same time. When watching this video. I see that there is a toggle switch to put PBP for the LG monitor. I already downloaded onscreen control and dual controller from the LG website but I don’t see anything on the monitor for me to toggle to PBP. Can you please help me with this problem. The monitor I bought is LG ultra wide 35WN65C. Please help. Thank you.

With Synergy can you use Touch ID if you are controlling two Macs?
Thanks, buddy! Fantastic job and thank you for clearing this up. I am building a Threadripper PC machine for my 3D workflow, but I do not want to stop using a MAC setup. To add to your Synergy setup, this is also a fantastic program if your PC is located in another location altogether or perhaps in a different room from where you usually work. I think I will be keeping my PC in the freezer :)))
Thank you for this break down!
Hi, great video. Thank you. However, I have a PC connected to a 43" 4k Samsung smart TV that I am using as my monitor, and I want to set things up so I can see and use the two separate desktops at the same time so I will be able to emulate two separate monitors on one screen and drag between the two. Is that possible? I basically want to emulate two separate monitors on one screen. Thank you
Did you get 2 computers to work simultaneously on same smart TV?
Can you drag window from each computer into the other? I don’t really see the point in this if you can’t use them in sync with each other.
You can use Barrier which is a free fork from Synergy.
If I create an image jpeg on my Mac can I drag it to the PC side or what is suggested?
Why don't you run all of your windows cables into the docking station as well, instead of only cables for the MacBook?
Does thunderbolt support data upstream? So for example if I connect a thunderbolt cable to my gaming laptop will it not only display, but will I be able to use my monitors I0 ports like the usb A ports? Or would I need a usb b cable?

I will be using a pc laptop, a MacBook Air, 2- 27” monitors, 1 mouse and 1 keyboard and Synergy. I want to sometimes use the use both computers on the 2 monitors simultaneously. Other times, I’ll want to use the pc with both monitors at the same time. I’m being told I’ll need to use a switch to change from one configuration to the other. Is this correct? And will both computers be connected to the Thunderbolt?
Would this work with dual monitors and only one connected to the macbook? Any changes to the setup needed in that situation?
I'm trying to figure out what is the best route to go. I have a new computer Windows 10 & a computer that is very old that's Windows also but uses a VGA cable. I want to plug both into one computer screen. Any input on that best route to go for this? Id prefer to be able to use both computers at the same time while using the same computer screen
is there a way to get both of the "computers" to use like the same external SSD at the same time and just using 1 to transfer files between the 2 computers
Is it possible to switch and run one computer at a time using this dock? If not, is there a device you would recommend that will do that?
Now that is has been 3 years, has anything changed? I'm planning to have a similar set up and wondering if you have discovered new tech to accomplish this. Thank you!
Did this work with ipad !?
When Synergy worked, it was awesome. When it failed (it kept giving me a firewall error despite not changing anything in my network) and now is useless. One recommendation they provide is to uninstall then reinstall the software from scratch. Now if fails based on saying that I don't have a compatible OS. I have given up...
If you have two computers sharing one monitor, is it possible to share the screen of both computers using a screen sharing tool like team viewer or each computer needs to start it’s own session?
Is this possible between console and pc if kvm supported monitor is used?

(Also HDMI)
You plug your keyboard/mouse dongle into the USB ports in the front.
HDMI/DP in the back. And then just press a button to switch between computers.
This way you don't need to have a server running at all times.
I have my MacBook connected to a dock. Then from the dock into the DP Switch. My PC into the DP switch. And then the Switch into my monitor (LG 38 ultrawide)
I also have a USB drive in the switch as well.
There should be a button on monitors that allows you to select a port channel, just like in televisions...
This seems pretty neat. A question though: What if at any point you want to focus 100% on what's going on in one of the 2 devices? Is there a quick way to just switch to 'Full screen' for just one of them?
