How to measure your head for masks and helmets for cosplay

- Here's an easy way to measure your head for the purpose of scaling 3D models to fit, or fabricating masks to propoerly fit your head.
Here's a link to 3D printable cosplay calipers I modelled. You can also simply cut out similar shapes from cardboard to use as calipers.

Great video, thanks so much for making this. One improvement I'd made here is to measure the height of your head from the top of your skull (plus any hair) to the TIP of your chin (don't let your chin sit in the crook of the caliper) but take this measurement with your MOUTH OPEN. Some helmets will enclose your chin and you will want room to move your jaw to talk or eat (or even just to chew gum), and for other bucket-style helmets, like mandalorian helmets, you will not want your jaw showing while you talk/chew, so when in doubt, add extra room (maybe as much as 3-4 centimeters) on that height measurement.

This simplifies everything I was trying. I printed a Daedric Helmet and it was wayyy too small and I've been fighting to figure out how to scale it correctly. I got the circumference of my head but thats it. Calipers will be way more useful in the long run
Absolutely. Circumference doesnt help that much. Think of it this way: 2 people can have the same head circumference, but one persons head can be wider than the other. Or one persons ears or nose can stick out more than another. This greatly affects the dimensions. Calipers is the easiest way to measure withut having to do a 3D scan of your head, etc
@Panda Props & Costumes Agreed. I mainly just need this helmet to fit over my ears. Got the measurements but the software I use is iffy to measure the scale. Just gonna do a 25% up and see how it goes with the size ring. Though I have have to print that off in 4 parts.
you made a video a while back about voice amps and how you can lower your pitch with them. Could you please leave a link to that device? Im making a character that requires a low voice but I cant find how or where to do it!
Hi there, thanks for tuning in. You need a voice modulator card or box. You can look up Hyperdyne Labs Vortex or Romfx, they both have box units that are plug and play. If you want to experiment more, you can look into the Voice Synth Pro app on Itunes. You can use your iphone and the app to modulate your voice. While it can be done with newer iphones, it works more seamlessly with old Iphones as they used to use the 1/8" stereo headphone jack. Good luck!
What is a cosplay caliper Actually Called if I were to buy 1?
i know this is fairly old post and i dont know if you found an answer yet but you could look up outside caliper or hinged outside caliper.
