I guess you've left by now, but the tap water in Edinburgh is considered better than bottled water by many. If you return, give it a try! There are loads of great bookshops here, too. Lots of little independent places with live readings etc.
Thanks for the tips! I have a work conference next year in Glasgow and I planned on returning to Edinburgh because this place is truly magical! You are so lucky to live here. But I will definitely try your tap water recommendations, because if it is better than bottled water?! Thats a little dream. Lol Also I definitely want to go to more local bookshops. I was only there for a couple of days so I hit big chain stores. Waterstones and blackwells but next time, I definitely want to go to more local shops. So if you have any in particular I will totally check them out when I am back! ❤️
@@TaylorsJourney water in all of Scotland is good, so you can try it everywhere. In Edinburgh I recommend the books shops: Golden Hare, Lighthouse Books, Toppings, Portobello Book Shop. I'd add Blackwells to that but you've been there already. I like the waterstones on princes street too, great views of the castle and a fun kids section. You could also visit the national library and central library, they have book exhibitions as well as being regular libraries
@@russjoneswrites Thank you so much for the recommendations! I went to Waterstones and loved it, it will be on my vlog next week, so I am glad you recommended this. I definitely will try to visit the additional bookstores you mentioned on my next visit. Also the library sounds like such a vibe. I most likely will be working when I am there, so I will make it an aim to work there one day while I am visiting. Thank you for recommending to me these gems. Especially the library. I always forget to visit libraries, which is so wild. Libraries are were I spent most of my childhood and where I hold some of my fondest memories. I can't wait to tell you how much I enjoyed these spots and most importantly the water on my next visit.
@@TaylorsJourney have a great time! there's so much booky / literary stuff going on in Edinburgh, you could go to a book launch or reading every night I think. I am a writer so it's a great place to live for me
I'm from Sussex in South coast of England but have lived in Edinburgh for 30yrs. The water doen south is horrible as it all runs through chalk and clay so is very hard and not tasty. Scottish water comes through granite, rock and up north through peat and heather so is soft and delicious
Literally, learning this is what actually made me start researching places I visit before just going. I am still shattered that I did not know this, but I cannot wait to try when I return. I am very fortunate that I can make another trip this year. Praise God, so trying the water will be the FIRST thing I get on camera just because so many people have told me, I should have just drank the water. So I am thrilled 🥰
I am currently writing this from London, so I TOTALLY understand you! First please take care of yourself and your mental health. This election has been a lot to process. I feel you and im right there with you. If you are considering planning a trip to Scotland, you should totally go and experience it. I truly enjoyed my time, so much so, I will be back next month for a week. The UK is an amazing destination and very inclusive which is a breath of fresh air in the current American political climate. I do hope you make the trip and before you do, please review the comment section of this video. So many native people gave tonnnnssss of recommendations for things to do when visiting. Not just Edinburgh but other areas as well. Best of luck to you and your travels! Have a beautiful day. 🖤
Lived in edinburgh all my life, grow up right around the corner from your air bnb. Love seeing videos of other people experiences in my lovely wee city.
Your city made me feel like a princess in a fairytale. You are so fortunate to call it home. Thank you for your kind words and cannot wait to comeback later this year. 💕
This is a cool take and one of many reasons why I pour over videos like this...to compared other peoples experiences, to mine. I was in the Marines in my early days, the 80's, and went to countless countries. Combined with being a major airline employee of almost 28 years, I have literally covered this entire planet through my travels...no exaggeration! I have experienced racism from time to time, any and everywhere. It simply exists within some people and there's just no getting around it. People will be people, it is what it is...just keep it moving and don't give it the time of day, is my best advice. I've been through Scotland pretty well over the past years, even Edinburgh. It's been a good while though, 2004/2005, so I'm planning to get back this month (October), for a refresher of sorts. lol. So thanks for your video/perspective, very cool take. 👍
Your life sounds literally like my dream life! I bet you have felt like you have lived several lifetimes. I am so happy you have got to experience the world and thank you for your kind words! Have you ever been to italy? That is my next new country I will be visiting and if you have can you provide any recommendations. I will be staying in Lecco, and flying into Milan, I think realistically I can visit Milan or Rome. Not both. If you have been to either please let me know which one you suggest as my first time visiting. Thank you for finding my little corner of the internet! I do hope you enjoy it here. You definitely brightened my day with your kind words.
@@TaylorsJourney Thanks for your kindness, and yes, at least 3 or 4 lifetimes...LOL. It's been a great 58 years so far, truly thankful for every one of them! My first trip to Italy was in 1987, as a young Marine. Naples, Palermo and Sigonella. Over the last 15 years, add Venice, Rimini, Bologna, Milan, Paris, Rome and Como...so yes I've been to Italy. 😅 You've picked an amazing place to stay. I've never been to Lecco but having been in and around Lake Como, of course I've heard all about it. As for Rome or Milan, both will definitely keep you busy. Really, it depends on the purpose of the trip/visit. Rome is a huge tourism spot, probably more so than Milan and is just bigger. Both have great architecture, museums and food, of course. Milan however, is in my opinion, just a tad more laid back and luxurious in it's vibe so with that it's probably going to cost a bit more for accommodations...but also worth it. Since you're staying in Lecco, Milan is definitely closer but Rome is pretty much a "must see" type of destination. Rome has a more crazy nightlife though I feel that is not your 'jam.' But, it also has more history and art, which I feel gives it the slight advantage when it comes to one of your fav things...BOOKS! And how EPIC would a train ride be, through the countryside from Milan to Rome. 👍 (I'm really not helping to make this decision any easier, my bad. lol) In either case though, you can't go wrong. No matter which city you pick, it's sure to be an amazing trip. 💖
@@tima.478 Oh wow, Thank you so much for this feedback! I apologize for the delay, my actual day job has been very, VERY busy. But omgosh.. you are right both of these destinations sound perfect. I was almost set on Milan based on your recommendation until you mentioned Rome has the advantage with books. That makes the decision difficult to make. My little sister is supposed to be celebrating her birthday in Paris, which is why I have to pick one or the other, but her plans haven't been set in stone. In the event she doesn't go. I think I will pick both. The train ride idea sounds amazing because my little one lovesssss trains. I will keep you posted on what ends up happening. Nonetheless, whether I go to both this year, I will definitely try to see them both at some point in my lifetime especially with Rome being a must see like you recommended. Thank you so much for providing this information! I am so so sooo grateful and thank you for your patience while I was took a while to respond.
@@TaylorsJourney You're very welcome and no problem, just glad I could help...even If it was to *help* make the decision less easy! LOL Like you said, will be an epic trip no matter what. 💖 Nothing ventured, nothing gained... ✌
I am so sad I didn't know this! I would have tried it when I was there, because the bottled water is so yummy! I will be back in December and I cannot wait to see for myself because if the tap is better than the bottled, I might have found my forever home. 🥰
@@TaylorsJourney Our tap water IS bottled water, the stuff you get through the central belt and on the coasts at Glasgow and Edinburgh mostly comes from the "Campsie Fells" this is the exact same source as "Highland spring" and other such branded bottles of water and its gone through the exact same safety and cleaning standards as "highland spring" etc. What the makers of bottled water have is some private land along the same water routes and they take it from their private land not the normal reserviors. Also you can save yourself a bit of cash by not staying in the cities, there are loads of little quiet places just outside which are usually cheaper for accomodation, place I live is called Falkirk, where the Kelpies are, its 30/40 minutes from Glasgow and Edinburgh by train little less time by car, though a train journey only costs about £10 return, all the prices get hiked at this time of year because of summer months and tourists and that is worse in cities.
Hi Taylor. The YT algorithm sent you to me and, Sis, I could not be more thrilled! The first video that popped up was the one of you in Edinburgh, one of my absolute favorite places. I miss the country and its people so much and am planning a 4th visit there in Oct. Okay, second I’ve been doing mostly solo travel lately bc 1. I like it and 2. Who can wait for other people, right?
I loved Edinburgh. I was in London and took the train to Edinburgh. I visited everything. I even went on a tour of Outlander TV sites. I can’t wait to go back.
Was it not the most beautiful time! I am planning to go back in the summer, and get a full rich experience. The days are longer there than in the states so I am excited to do more outdoor activities. I had a wonderful time and I am so glad you did too!
@@TaylorsJourneyAt the height of summer, it doesn’t get properly dark until about 10/11pm in Edinburgh. However, even though it’s summer, good weather is never guaranteed, alas. 👍
@@titteryenot4524 Honestly though I am fully accepting of the rain, if it does occur. The UK is known for rainy days so I feel it is not fair to fault the weather for being different than what I am used too. I love to read, like love to read, I am currently in NYC now (my home base is Atlanta, GA, USA) and even on vacation I have read every day while being here, so I am a little biased. lol Rainy weather is perfect for me. I can take time out to read and not feel guilty so rain or shine, I promise I will have a beautiful time. Also, the it helps that even with rain the city is still busy and bustling so if I wanted to get out, multiple people do not allow the weather to impact their daily routine.
@@TaylorsJourney Good points, well made. I’m actually aware of people who come to Scotland precisely to escape the intense heat in their home countries. For example, I know a few Spanish folk who come for a summer holiday as they find it difficult to sleep at night back home in Spain. I suppose it’s what you’re used to. I was born and bred in a cool, rainy climate and to have that 24/7/365 (more or less - a ‘hot day’ in Edinburgh is about 21°C; a _really_ hot day is 25°C 👈 very rare!) can get quite depressing so it’s nice to spend _my_ summers somewhere like Spain or Italy or Southern France, where you’re more or less guaranteed sun and 30°C for 3 solid summer months. Anyway, happy travelling and happy reading! 👍
Thank you so much. It truly was a magical city that still lives with me. I am planning a trip this coming December and to bring my little one, so some of the magic can rub off on him as well. 💕 I also cannot wait to try the water it is what I am most excited for. lol
Happy Retirement!!! I hope you have the best time and you picked a beautiful place to celebrate. Especially if the European Football Tournament is still happening the day you attend. I am sure you will have a lovely time. I truly enjoyed my time and I am literalllyyyy counting down the days until my return in December!
I’m enjoying seeing Edinburgh through your eyes- I’ve been twice( and it wasn’t enough). On my first trip we arrived at 7:30 AM and weren’t able to check into our B&B yet, but could leave our luggage there. So we bought a ticket for the city guided bus tour & were able to get off and see areas then get on another tour bus- a great way to fight jet lag & get an oversight of the city, it’s landmarks & history. On this trip we stayed at B&B on Princes St that was a 5th floor walk up! That was rough….on my next trip I stayed on St Giles St…much easier for a woman in her 70’s. Thank you for sharing your travel with us!😘 A Gram from MO
I am so glad you enjoyed the guided tour! How long was your tour was it an all day thing or did it last a couple of hours? I am so glad you were able to visit twice. I am so much looking forward to my next trip. It was such a magical experience I loved every moment of it! Also 5 Floors is totally a lot! That is how many floors I had to walk up and I was worn out each time I got to my door. lol So going in the winter/colder months, I very much appreciated. I wasn't sweaty from the walking and stairs.
If you're coming back, I recommend a quick, under 30 minutes, train trip to Linlithgow. Linlithgow Palace, the birth place of Mary Queen of Scots and a lovely little town - it has a bookshop😁 Stirling is also well worth a visit, great old town & Castle. If you can a trip round some of the Lochs & Glens of the Trossachs is a great day out.
Thank you for this tip! I will definitely be back. I will be there at the latest this time next year for work. I will start the trip in Glasgow but will probably plan to stay an extra week/ Week and a half to explore other parts of Scotland and spend more time in Edinburgh. So I am super looking for to this trip, now that I have sooo much feedback and new places to explore. Thank for you tip regarding Linlithgow! And the for providing the history about Mary Queen of Scots. I am obsessed with bookstores, if you could provide the name for me. I will definitely try to work it in my travel plan especially with it only being 30 min train ride from Edinburgh. In regards to the other places to mentioned: Stirling and Lochs & Glens of the Trossachs; how far are they in relation to Edinburgh. I truly want to maximize my trip the next time I come and to see as much as a physically can. If I can also work them in, I would love to visit these places as well.
@@TaylorsJourney The Bookshop in Linlithgow is Far From The Madding Crowd. Linlithgow is on the main line between Glasgow and Edinburgh so an easy fit. There are a bunch of tour companies offering day trips out to the Trossachs, I don't know enough to recommend one but there are some leaving both Glasgow and Edinburgh to include Stirling Castle, the Trossachs & Loch Lomond. I will recommend going on one that goes via Dukes Pass to Aberfoyle because that road is nuts, I used to go down it on my motorbike - twisty! Not a huge fan of the Outlander tours but a visit to Culross is well worth it on it's own. If you fancy a coastal day out you can get a bus from Edinburgh up to Anstruther a beautiful harbour town with the best fish and chips. It takes about 2 1/2 hours or you can book a day tour for about £99 that goes all the way up to St Andrews, check Visit Scotland for that one.
@@alisonrodger3360 I do not know how I missed this comment! But thank you for providing the transportation recommendations in addition to the locations! Like you have made my travel planning so much easier. I have had some time to plan in the meantime and it looks like I will be back for short trip in December, where I can do two days in Scotland and two days in London. I know it will be much colder and most things during this time will be Christmas themed. I am definitely planning to stay in Edinburgh while I am in Scotland because I am obsessed. My longer trip where I will spend roughly 8-10 days in Scotland will be next June. This trip, I will for sure be starting in Glasgow and it will be warmer so I can enjoy the costal areas more. So I know this is a lot of information, but I do hope I can find fun things to do in Edinburgh during the christmas season!
If you like books you should come during the Edinburgh festival (largest arts and comedy festival in the world) and it also has a massive book festival. Ps no one buys bottled water in Scotland unless they are outside with no access to tap water 🤣. The tap water is literal mineral water.
I had no idea the tap water was that good in Scotland. I am so sad I missed out on this. You have no idea especially since the bottled water is so yummy. I am just like how on earth did I not know this?? lol Also in regards to the Edinburgh festival! Is this the festival that occurs every August? I didn't realize it had a book festival partnered with it! I totally HAVE to experience this in person. As an avid reader that sounds like a literal DREAM.
@@TaylorsJourney not only is the water really ‘soft’ (doesn’t have much limestone in it) if you let the tap run for 30 secs its ice cold. They have to pay for water in England despite the fact most of the water in England is horrible 🤣 but we dont. There is more fresh water in Loch Ness than there is in all of England so there is no way we would pay for it. Yeah ‘the Edinburgh festival’ is actually lots of different festivals and all of them massive. Edinburgh receives about 300k tourists during the month in a city of 600,000 from all over Europe and the Anglo sphere.
OMGOSH that festival sounds massive! I can imagine finding lodging being a little difficult then. I should definitely plan for it. I maybe able to swing it in the next year or two, because that sounds like loads of fun. Especially the books. Wow, that's what another commentor said about the water as well. They stated there is no way they would pay for water. It is a waste of money in scotland. I truly cannot believe this, in the states it is the exact opposite. lol we buy water. I cannot wait to try it, because water tasting better than the bottled water sounds like heaven. The bottled water is fantastic so if its better than that i might just move there. ❤️
@@TaylorsJourney yeah dont try lodging, hostels or air bnbs in edinburgh. During the festival . Makes the news every year with comedians etc struggle to find accomodation and sleep on folks floors or cant affoard to do the events . Used to eb a great thing for up and comig tv stars, musicians ,actors etc hut its too comercialised now and to make a profit. Sso even the hotels etc are charhing way over the odds. Youd be best finding cheap accomodation outside of edinburgh in the surrounding towns . Their like 7-10 miles away from edinburgh but because the regualr fast and cheap public transport bus takes about 20mins to get there and youl get an all day bus ticket for a few pound so you can hop on and off as much as you like to go to various places with the same bus company ( lothian buses / LRT) think you also use it in the tram aswel but only to the 2nd last stop before the airport .extra to go into the airport.also trains into town aswel If your going to to that look at hotels, bnb. Air bnb in places like dalkeith ( country town like place), or gilmerton area a bit closer etc etc
Thank you for this tip! Truly, because I have been researching the summer festivals and lodging has been a little wild just upon a review. I will be back in scotland next summer for a work conference, so I think that will give me time to really explore Scotland in the summer time. Unfortunately though this will be in June and I know most of the festivals are in August/late July, but I do think it will still be a beautiful time. Your country is beautiful and seeing it from an everyday perspective and seeing what life is like most does are things that bring me the most fulfillment, so I am very happy and excited for my coming trips.
I am watching a travel video on libson now! I had no idea how pretty portugal is. Its definitely on my list for travel next year because its gorgeoussss
So chuffed you loved our incredible city. Oh and our Tap water is better than any of the bottle stuff. Please try when you return. Haste ye back soon. Safe travels 🏴❤️
The tap water will be the first thing I try and I can't wait! December can't come fast enough me and my little one are tentatively planning to spend Christmas there. 🥰
I love this.. I'm from Trinidad and Tobago, a mom in my thirties and I want to do something for myself. I'm planning to travel solo for my first adventure to Edinburgh or Amsterdam.. This really gave me inspiration. Thank you so much.
I loveeee when I hear that mom's want to travel! That makes me so excited. I have been to both Edinburgh and Amsterdam. They are both magical places. I feel for your very Edinburgh would be the perfect first location for a solo trip due to the language. Since you are an english speaker, public transport, ubers, and anything that requires directions and navigation will not be difficult. Amsterdam though, SLAPS. The food is great, the people are amazing, it is super safe. There are manyyyyy things to do outside of nightlife and the RED light district, but if that is your vibe you will also have fun in the night life. I went there this time last year and it was one of my favorite trips to date. I think both trips are different vibes but equally fun. Please let me know what you choose! If you go to Amsterdam the best fish and chips that I have had in the whole of Europe is located at the establishment Food Hallen (food hall) called the Butcher. SOOOOOOOO goood. They also have sooo much to eat and do inside of Food Hallen.
@@TaylorsJourney I highly appreciate your feedback and advisement. I’ll look out for these places when I get there. I made a trip to Grenada recently and it was my first time traveling since 2002, I was scared out of my mind on the flight. I’m working on that anxiety then I’ll venture further. Hope you’re having a wonderful week! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
@@slimchick2689 Believe it or not, I was the EXACT same way two years ago. I never ever planned on flying over water just the thought terrified me! If I can offer any advice overcoming that, I would suggest taking night flights. The later the flight the better. If you can swing a 9, 10, or even 11pm. This way you will naturally be tired and youll sleep through the flight journey. ❤
It's so fun seeing Edinburgh through someone else's eyes as someone who lives there. Glad you had a good time! My favourite bookshops are Edinburgh Books and Armchair Books - both have lots of rare old books. Armchair Books is so cosy. Typewronger Books is really cute too. I love the background music in this video, by the way.
Thank you for the bookshop recommendations! This is the first time I have heard of these two places, so I definitely want to check them out the next time I am in town! I might legit need a book bag, just for all the books I might end up purchasing. 🥰

Lovely video. Came at just the right time because I’m planning the same trip this summer. Could you share details of the Airbnb you stayed on in Edinburgh?
Hello! I totally spaced and did not place the link in my description. Here is the link to the listing: www.airbnb.com/rooms/625120745805305966?source_impression_id=p3_1715606215_khlEYan4LkQ0G7Yk The location is so central. It is in the heart of everything and super close to the royal mile! One thing though, there are however loads of stairs and they don't have elevators to your floor. I didn't mind but it just isn't listed in the description of the Airbnb page. For the price I paid though, I couldn't complain. It was only bad the day I carried luggage.
Omgosh yay! I am so happy for you and so jealous you live so close! Idk how familiar you are with the city but if you are looking for new interesting things to do comb through the comments on my video before your trip. The natives left sooooo many good itinerary ideas. I do hope you have fun on your visit and thank you for commenting. 💖
I went to Edinburgh a few years ago, it's a stunning city but if you think that's steep then you've not been to my city😂 I come from the "Edinburgh of the South", Dunedin in New Zealand, which was settled by Scots. I wonder if hard cover books are less common in Europe because of extra cost, and ease of recycling soft covered books🤷♂️
Omgosh steeper than Edinburgh is wild. Im in much better shape now then I was then, so I think I can be up for the challenge. I won’t lie though that sounds pretty intense. I bet you all have super strong calf muscles. I have a similar theory about the hardcover books. I feel there has to be either an economic or environmental factor, because in most of the countries Ive visited, I typically only find the classics with hard covers
@@TaylorsJourney Don't know about strong calf muscles, we just drive😄 but plenty of tourists stop in to climb the steepest Street in the world, you'd probably like the 24hr charity booksale that's held each year, don't need good calves for that! Pity it's so far away, I live in the UK now and it's about 36hrs to fly home.😒
Hardbacks are most definitely available in the UK (I can’t and won’t speak for Europe in general). Books in the UK are generally released in hardback first and a wee while later a paperback version will be released. As for classics, they will mostly be sold new as paperbacks but there are hardbacks available too and of course if you visit second hand bookshops and charity shops (some of which only sell books and music) you can often find some really beautiful old hardbacks. The likes of Blackies (a book publishing house based in Glasgow and London that were in existence between 1809 and 1991) are quite well known for their beautifully decorated book covers. But there are also publishing houses like penguin that have different facets to the books they publish and their classics are (or at least in the past they were) published with reproductions of actual works of art on their cover. To be honest, a lot of people in the UK just prefer paperbacks as they are smaller than hardbacks, so can be slipped into a bag or even a pocket a lot easier and can actually just be more comfortable for many people to hold whilst reading. But if you ask in any bookshop that sells brand new books, there is a good chance they will have a hardback version available but they are also more expensive than the paperbacks.
Yo! Thank you so much for this response! And your honesty. I didn’t even know blackies existed and I might have to go to Glasgow and London this fall for work! So that is an excellent recommendation and I will most definitely follow up on it and my experience there in another video. Also thank you for educating me on hard copy vs paperback preference. Even on the publishing houses! I am familiar with penguin but i didnt realize they had stand alone stores so i need to check those out as well. Also thank you for all of information and sharing it. I found it so so soooo useful
@@TaylorsJourney Penguin doesn’t actually have stand alone stores as far as I know and sadly Blackies stopped publishing around thirty years ago but if you look at online second hand book shops, there are plenty of their books available there (at least with UK ones) and for the most part many are relatively inexpensive. Even a quick Google search will show you how beautiful many of them are, regardless of the content. I may have caused a little confusion by using the term publishing house, which is just a slightly archaic term for a publishing company…a bit like how higher tier fashion designers refer to the company as a fashion house. But Penguin have lots of different branches to their tree, so to speak and each branch is aimed at a different area of the market…though not quite to the same extent now as they had around fifty years ago. Waterstones is another very big bookshop here in the UK and as someone from Scotland who grew up not far from Glasgow I can honestly say that it’s a very beautiful and vibrant city (it’s the largest city in Scotland and the branch of Waterstones on Sauchiehall Street (pronounced sucky hall) is apparently the largest bookshop in Scotland. It might be worth checking their website for the Sauchiehall Street branch before you visit Glasgow (if/when that happens) as they often have book reading events. Glasgow also has a lot of free to enter museums and galleries and if you get the chance to go outside of the main city there is a museum/gallery called The Burrell Collection that is in a large country house set in extensive grounds…and it’s massive, free to enter and there are buses and trains from Glasgow. Though if you want to see some coastal beauty, you can get the train to Gourock, Largs or Ayr (all of which take around an hour)…and of course Ayr is the birthplace of Scotland’s Bard Robert Burns, with the cottage he was born in being a just outside the the town itself and there is a pub in the centre of town that was renamed the Tam O’Shanter after the Burns poem but was actually somewhere the poet drank (the pub was built in 1749, so it was built ten years before Burns was born). But seeing as how I was brought up there (even if there is relatively little to do there) I would recommend a visit to Gourock, even if just for the view. There is always Helensburgh too, where Charles Rennie MacKintosh’s (very famous Art Deco architect and designer, who actually designed the Glasgow School of Art and there is a cafe in Glasgow called the Willow Tearooms that was also designed by him, that is still a functioning cafe) home Hill House (open to the public) is located and it was also the birthplace of John Logie Baird who is regarded as the inventor of the television.
I also spend all my money on books when I travel and I never thought about how good it is that Scotland doesn't go hard for hardcover books because my luggage on the way back to the states would be over every single time ha ha
Honestly, I am so grateful for this now because I just got back from paris and bought sooo many books if they were hardback there would be no way I could bring them back to the states. I love that you like books like me. lol the first place I am looking for is a bookstore when I land in a new city. 😂
It was such a culture shock! But in the best way! I was like OMGosh this is so beautiful! My country is so new we hardly have anything similar to this. We have some landmarks, neighborhoods, and monuments but for the most part its up north on the east coast. I live in Atlanta and my city burned down so we lost most of our historical buildings.
It depends where you go. They tend to know more about London and the surrounding areas and then get more of a culture shock if they go north. I enjoyed taking some American friends to north Wales to the Llyn peninsular once. The first supermarket we stopped in most people were speaking Welsh. That was quite a culture shock for them.
@@barrysteven5964 I would love to go to Wales, it is on my bucket list! I am so grateful for the tip of Welsh. lol Forgive me for not knowing that English isn't the only tongue that is spoken in this country. lol I 100% would have had a culture shock if I went and heard a different language, so I very much appreciate the heads up! Is it still easy to get around being an english only speaker or did you feel like you need Welsh to move about as a solo traveler?
@@TaylorsJourneyAll Welsh people speak English. The North of Walse is very patriotic to Walse but they will all speak English. If you go to the Islands of Scotland they will speak Gallic which sounds similar to Welsh but is closer to Irish Gaelic. Both languages (Welsh and Gaelic) are completely separate and have no commen roots. As an American people will be glad to help and even teach you phrases. There us nothing native speakers enjoy more than teaching their culture. Just remember "Bus" in Welsh is "Bus" hahaha
Its so disappointing that visitors to Scotland and Edinburgh are not more adventurous with their food choices. A burger fries seem to be the go to, which you can get all over the world. The food in Scotland is excellent, by and large, with cosmopolitan varieties of cuisine.
This feedback is super fair! I will be back in December, do you have any recommendations for Edinburgh? I feel like i have gotten so many recommendations for things to do and bookstores, but I haven’t gotten food recommendations. Outside of needing to try the tap water. Lol so i am totally down to experience authentic Scottish cuisine. Give me a couple recommendations and i will try to get one on camera 🥰
Thank you, you have just given me a newfound respect for my job. I am not going to lie this comment made me smile. Also thank you for the comment on the video quality, also made me smile. If you are interested in my line work. I work in Clinical Research. I have a muchhhhh older vlog on my channel kinda detailing what i do. I have been promoted a couple times since then but the work is still the same industry. ❤
@@Stxmuso honestly, i didnt know it was so much better. I enjoy the bottled water in England so much, so it didn’t even cross my mind that tap was better, but I will be back in December and cant wait to give the tap a go. 😇
It's a legal requirement that the water which comes out of a cold tap anywhere in Great Britain is safe to drink, which explains why it is filtered and chlorinated. Buying bottled drinking water in the United Kingdom is a complete waste of money.
Thank you so so sooo much for educating me. I cannot wait to try it the next time I am in town, because if bottled water taste that good, I cannot imagine how delicious the tap water will taste. The water quality is honestly my favorite part of the UK. The water in the states just cannot compare to the water you are blessed to drink daily. 💕
@@TaylorsJourney - Next time you're in Edinburgh, if the weather's okay, take a warm coat and a hot drink before climbing to the top of Arthur's Seat. The panoramic 360 degree views from the 823 foot-high summit of this dormant volcano (which last erupted during the Lower Carboniferous) are amazing!
That is on my bucket List! I am so sad, I wasn't able to do it the last time I was there because of the rain, but if it doesn't rain when I return, I am totally doing it. 💕
People will have an opinion initially. Human beings are pack beings by nature, so to break off from your pack and explore solo is somewhat against human nature. The biggest thing that is off putting is without your pack, the perception is you lose your protection. With a little reframe regarding your social circle, their commentary on your plans to solo travel are more so their projection of worry for your safety. Try not to take it too personally. It is coming from a place of love. Fear is definitely intertwined with their commentary but love is the root. When you do go, because I have a feeling you will, each trip you take gets easier and easier. They will also be more supportive when they see your experience. I have another video on my channel discussing tips and tricks for being a woman solo traveling (ua-cam.com/video/X2HqiLFWDO4/v-deo.html). I would start small, my first solo trip was within the States (my native country). I knew the country, the language, I had the same healthcare, I knew how the emergency system and transportation worked, culture, and customs. After this trip, I worked my way up to international travel. If I were you I would get my feet wet in an area you feel fully comfortable, so that is pretty much any city in your home country that you haven't been to and would like to go to. If you are based in the states, I highly Recommend NYC (even if you have been). If you can make it solo traveling in NYC, you can go anywhere in the world. Especially in Europe and Japan. In NYC only use the trains and buses for transport this way you would be completely prepped for European travel. Another thing you can do to prepare, while you are in your native country begin to spend more time alone. Take yourself on solo dates. Try going to dinner once a month or the theaters. Do activities you normally would need a group to do alone. This way you are much more comfortable with your own company. Some peoples' biggest fear when traveling is dinning alone. Mostly because it is something they have never done, so get some practice beforehand, so when you are on your trip you aren't uncomfortable with your own company. That is the easiest way to prepare prior to taking that first trip. I do hope one day you are able to move to Scotland truly! It is such a magical place, but honestly my favorite part about it is the people. They are so friendly and just have so much wisdom and culture they haven't hesitated to share with me over the past couple of months. If you do plan of visiting please comb though the comments on my video! They offered soooooo many places to visit and do. They talked about the best time of the year to come and festivals to attend. So please go through this so you have a rich experience when you do decide to come. I know this response is a novel but I wish you best of luck on your travel and cannot wait to hear about your first trip, so please do let me know when you go! ❤️
I am still so bummed that i did not know this, but I am so happy I have the ability to return. When I come back in December, I am so excited to try Scotland's tap water. I have heard so many great things about it, so I am positive it won't dissappoint.
@TaylorsJourney yeah so many people just have reusable bottles rather than buying bottled. No need for filters as the waters not heavy or upsets your stomach. Just turn the cold tap on and let it run for 10seconds or so , that let's it get a bit more chilled then fill your cup / bottle and drink it. Same as you'll find drinking fountains in the streets in some places or train stations for refilling your bottles for free. So if your in Edinburgh waverly train station the free fountain is opposite platform 5 . Gd for anyone and the homeless to come fill their bottles. Only time scots/ brits will use bottle mainly is when we travel to other countrys like Spain, France Turkey etc because drinking tap water there can give an upset stomach . Only use the tap water for brushing teeth and will be wary of drinks with ice in it incase the ice is made from tap water, some places ,hotels etc and reviews will say if its packaged ice or made from tap water ice .
@@oddbob8905 OMGOSH thank you for this! I am going to France in two weeks so I will stick to my bottled water for this trip. Also thank you for the Ice time, that is super helpful and to ensure I ask or study the dining spot to see if it is package ice over tap ice. I will totally use this advice on this trip. I would have never known if it wasn't for you, so thank you! 💞
@TaylorsJourney i can't guarantee every country or place is the same abroad/Europe and other countrys. It's just a general rule of thumb for majority of brits as we're not used to the different water in some place as it may be heavy water or more fluoride/chemicals etc so gives us upset stomachs, so only use the tap stuff for brushing teeth. As I say some places advertise it as pre bagged ice . Google/ reddit is handy for checking aswel. But defo scottish water and uk in general is regarded up there as some of the best . Can't mind the website/ body that done a review on water world wide for drinking. Sweeden or Switzerland was also up with some of the top water too lol. But yeah we mostly just run the tap for 10 secs and it gets colder if you run it for a bit and clears any water that may have settled for a bit in the pipes near the outlet. Hope you enjoy your next visit. Will keep a look out as I've only iust seen the video/channels and like seeing American takes on all things british/scottish
@TaylorsJourney p.s will save you money on buying bottled water all the time. Can pick up a cheap reusable water bottle 500ml,750ml and 1litre ones from most supermarkets / shops etc . Asds ,tesco, morrisons ,sainsburys etc for as little as £1 in the homeware sections/aisle

My heart breaks every time I get this comment. It hurts even more because I now know this undoubtedly has to be a fact, based on the sheer volume of people informing to try the tap. The next time I am there, I am going to dedicate a segment in my video to tasting the tap water. Because I have to capture my reaction on film. 🩷
You mentioned you were going to London? I'm guessing you have been already? The Waterstones bookshop in Piccadilly is probably bigger than Blackwell's in Edinburgh, and it is a nice store. Just a little bit down from Waterstones on the same street is Hatchards, also a great store. And one of my favourites is Daunt Books in Marylebone, behind Oxford Street. I hope you had the opportunity to visit some of these. When in Edinburgh I always visit Blackwells.
Thank you for sharing this information! I have seen the Waterstones in Piccadilly, and you are right it is quite big! I wasn't able to spend time inside because by the time we got there it had just closed. Trust me, my heart was completely shattered. Thank you for the other recommendations of Hatchards and Daunt Books. I have never heard of these stores so I appreciate you sharing them. I might have to be in London this October for work. Which honestly is the perfect time, Fall and book shopping in London sounds irresistible. If I do end up going, I will definitely check out the shops you have recommended.
@@TaylorsJourney No problem. I would also recommend that you visit Foyles, as I forgot to mention that shop. It is near Soho and the Tottenham Court Road end of Oxford Street. I think you will love this one more than the others. Hatchards is next door to Fortnum & Mason department store. There are a few Daunt Books stores but my favourite is the Marylebone High St branch. It’s a good walk from Bond Street station, about 15 minutes. So check out Hatchards, Daunt Books and Foyles. Enjoy.

You missed a trick with the Scottish tap water. We are known for having the most delicious, fresh and tasty tap water… England does not share that accolade sadly but next time don’t waste your money buying it, just fill up a bottle from your tap. Thanks for pronouncing Edinburgh the correct way. A lot of Americans say Edin-boro which is incorrect. Hope you enjoyed our magical history. Oooh also there is an incredible book store next to the Playhouse at the top of Leith Walk … it’s on the corner and looks unassuming from outside but when you go upstairs it’s a gorgeous Labrynth of books. Def worth a visit x
I am so sad I did not know about the tap water beforehand! Like I had no idea, and I am so sad I didn't get to try it. I will be back in December during the Christmas season so I am going to try it then and will get it all on camera. I am most excited for my obtaining my retribution. lol You are correct about it not being mentioned in England. I am in London quite frequently and I usually default to bottled water. Thank you for your tip for the bookstore. Do you happen to know the name of it? I would love to go and check it out the next time I am there. I will be in Edinburgh for Three days. I want to pack as much as I can in during those three days. Thank you for stopping by my little corner of the internet and providing your tips! I cannot wait to implement them on my next trip to your beautiful city. 💕
I travel alone mostly because I honestly enjoy my own company. The second reason usually is my interests are the same as others. I try to plan group trips, but usually they never make it out the group chat, so I just started going alone. I have been on more group trips though now more than ever, but its mostly because of this channel. My family and friends who want to travel typically invite me because they know im down to go on a trip, so i would say now im more of a 60/40 type of traveler. 60% i do alone and 40% i do with my friends and family (including my son)
I’m laughing at your video title i am an english person living in scotland so i am much more likely to suffer prejudice than you i bet your race never entered into any interaction here black folk go unnoticed for their race only a persons actions count here hope you loved your experience here in britain
Thank you for this comment. I haven't touched on racism and prejudice in my videos. I title them this way, strictly for demographic and search engine optimization purposes. To your point though, I can't speak for native blacks in the UK. I can however share what I have experienced growing up in the States versus the UK, and I have to admit. "Black folk go unnoticed for their race only a persons actions count here hope you loved your experience here in britain" This as an African American, (besides the water. lol idk whattttt is in the water but it is so so sooooo good. lolol) is my FAVORITE part of the UK. I remember my first time in London, in March of 2023. I had been there for 5 days. It was on my second to last day, I was in Camden, and I literally stopped mid sentence and told my partner. I haven't experienced any racism, discrimination, or prejudice. We were talking about what I enjoyed most on the trip, and this point hit me like a train. For the first time I felt unnoticed and like an actual person and my race didn't matter. Another thing I love is the lack of guns by police force, so even if an interaction is had on the basis of prejudice, a black person in the UK is much more likely to walk away alive. In the states, we are not so lucky. Because of my first experience in London, this is what made me want to start solo traveling especially in the UK. It is very easy for me because of the way I am treated. Thank you for touching on this, because this point hasn't been touched on by me, but it definitely is an important one, and what has made fall in love with the UK. ❤️
@@TaylorsJourney i have two points to make first the water! i originally come from london where the water is awful but now i live in edinburgh the water is excellent! whats in the water? that's the point exactly there is nothing! we have clean water! second point i watch many videos where black folk are judged superficially in their interactions with police i feel (and this is just a feeling i certainly have no experience) that in america there is so much entitlement that the good folk across the puddle are oppressed by the authority police believe they have and the customer is always right indoctrination leading to"karens" so have that along with the gun laws and you have a population that believe they are allowed to do whatever they want to whoever they want to do it to and its sad that a great nation is so unbelievably brainwashed while believing they are free its such a good job there are folk like yourself willing to travel and find out the truth good luck in your travels and stay safe at home.
Thank you! I am definitely trying to stay safe at home. I also thank you for your comments about traveling. I believe the world is huge and there is so much you can learn from different cultures and societies that allow you to use and develop intellectual honesty. I do know that traveling is a privilege. God has blessed me immensely, so that is why I like to share my experience. It can be hard to get outside of America because we are our own little world in the middle of two oceans. It can be pretty expensive to get from the east coast to the west coast of my own country ($400-600 USD) when you add in international travel, for someone who is a little inexperienced with travel booking can spend as much as $1500-1700 USD just to get the London. I think more Americans would love to travel, but just don't know where to start and factor that with prices of travel it is a huge deterrent from leaving our country. For any American reading this, just take that leap. There is a whole world outside of the states and your eyes will be opened in the best way, so if you are thinking about taking that leap of faith. Just take it. Take the trip. Gain the experience, you won't regret it. Take care Phil and thank you so much for engaging with my content! It truly warms my soul. Sending you love from Atlanta, Georgia, USA. ❤️
Hello, Thank you for this comment. I just wanted to clarify, so I can improve my content. When you said where the poster comes from do you mean my native country? If so I can start adding this in for viewers. I am from Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
I take offense thats not European water thats Scottish water some of the cleanest freshest on the planet, which ironically you can just get water as fresh tasting right from the tap here in Scotland, save yourself money and just refill that bottle.
I am soooo bummed i missed this! Im coming back in November/December for the Christmas season and I cannot wait to try it! You are absolutely correct, so so many people have confirmed it that the water is truly fantastic and my taste buds are so ready to give it a go! 🥰💕
Hi! I actually just title my videos this way solely for SEO and Demographic purposes. I had the absolute best time in Scotland they treated me wonderfully. I did not touch on race in this video but I truly had a beautiful time and was never treated differently or rudely. They are the sweetest people and I cannot wait for my next trip!
@TaylorsJourney I understand it, for some places travelling as a solo black female could be very dangerous. The only dangerous-ish place I know of in Edinburgh though is the Meadows. It's amazing during the day, but when it gets dark it's not super safe. A lot of SA happens there.
@@Bekzee i totally agree! Some places are not safe and dangerous. I also think it helps provide more context to what someone with my demographic background could expect when traveling to different cities. Thank you for your tip about the meadows! I do quite of bit of walking at night so i will avoid this area after sundown. Lastly, I totally agree with your statements about Edinburgh. It felt super safe and honestly the people of Scotland are some of the nicest people I have interacted with in person and on the internet. The love and kindness that has been given to me is immeasurable. This is what led me to return for the holiday season this coming winter. I can totally understand why a scotland native would question my intention of placing demos in my titles because from my experience race had nothing to do with how I was treated. I love the people more just for that fact alone. ❤️
I love your video. Lived in Edinburgh for 30 years, its fascinating to see it from a different point of view...hope you come back and do a tour of the Highlands 👍😃
I was thinking about doing this because it looks super interesting. The next time I am in town will be november/December do you think this is a good time of year to go? I know the days are much shorter during that time of the year?
Hi thank you for your comment! I can tell you’re new here. I title my video this way for SEO purposes. Being that I am a black solo female traveler. ✈️ I don’t focus on race or ethnicity in the video.

Lol

@@TaylorsJourney water in all of Scotland is good, so you can try it everywhere. In Edinburgh I recommend the books shops: Golden Hare, Lighthouse Books, Toppings, Portobello Book Shop. I am so so so sad. Every time I get this comment it breaks my heart lol
That's exactly what I was thinking 😂
👍 (I'm really not helping to make this decision any easier, my bad. lol)
In either case though, you can't go wrong.

Really glad you enjoyed your visit - you’re welcome back any time! 🏴
P.s. I won’t repeat the water bottle advice - you know for next time. 😅
Thank you so much. It truly was a magical city that still lives with me. I am planning a trip this coming December and to bring my little one, so some of the magic can rub off on him as well. 💕
I also cannot wait to try the water it is what I am most excited for. lol
As for the paperback books, we all travel a lot here as Europe is so accessible, they are just lighter!
What a wonderful young lady. My daughter was born in Edinburgh a beautiful city...my favourite.
Thank you so much! I loveddd Edinburgh. I am coming back in December and literally and counting down the days because i had such a beautiful time. 💕
The black bull, I’m going there with friends for my retirement this coming Friday, should be fun.
Glad you enjoyed your visit to old reekie.
@@TaylorsJourney yep todays the day. Thanks Taylor.

I am so so sooooooooooo Excited to spend Christmas there with my little baby boy! I hope it is a memory I will cherish forever. ❤
Thank you for sharing your travel with us!😘
A Gram from MO
Linlithgow Palace, the birth place of Mary Queen of Scots and a lovely little town - it has a bookshop😁
Stirling is also well worth a visit, great old town & Castle.
I am just like how on earth did I not know this?? lol
Also in regards to the Edinburgh festival!
Their like 7-10 miles away from edinburgh but because the regualr fast and cheap public transport bus takes about 20mins to get there and youl get an all day bus ticket for a few pound so you can hop on and off as much as you like to go to various places with the same bus company ( lothian buses / LRT) think you also use it in the tram aswel but only to the 2nd last stop before the airport .extra to go into the airport.also trains into town aswel
If your going to to that look at hotels, bnb.
Just came back from Porto, Portugal. The steep hills in Edinburgh are piece of cake compared to Porto and Lisbon 😄

I think Americans definitely get more of culture a shock when they arrive in Scotland than England.
Why?

@@Stxmuso honestly, i didnt know it was so much better. I enjoy the bottled water in England so much, so it didn’t even cross my mind that tap was better, but I will be back in December and cant wait to give the tap a go. 😇
Looks like a good trip, going to Edinburgh in November.
You will not be disappointed, especially if you enjoy reading. I am going back in December that is how much I enjoyed my time there!
That is on my bucket List! I am so sad, I wasn't able to do it the last time I was there because of the rain, but if it doesn't rain when I return, I am totally doing it. 💕
I want to travel solo but feel like everyone has their opinion on. I planned to move to scotland and i would like to go alone ❤❤❤
Shld have drank the water straight from the tap, scottish tap water is one of the best in the world and tastes great
I am still so bummed that i did not know this, but I am so happy I have the ability to return.
You just gave me more confidence to travel thank u ❤❤❤❤
Thank you this absolutely touched me! Please do let me know where you go first! I would love to hear all about it. 🥰

@@TaylorsJourneythank you!! I definitely will!! Did you go Edinburgh castle by any chance??
@@zoe._.1850 I didn't get to visit the castle unfortunately, it was closed the days I was there. 😓
You don't have to buy bottles watered, the tap water is ideal for drinking 👍🏻👍🏻
My heart breaks every time I get this comment. It hurts even more because I now know this undoubtedly has to be a fact, based on the sheer volume of people informing to try the tap. The next time I am there, I am going to dedicate a segment in my video to tasting the tap water. Because I have to capture my reaction on film. 🩷
Scottish water is nice, southern around the London area not as nice 👌🏻
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Enjoy.
@@rasputinswalloper475 These tips are legitimately so valuable to me! Thank you for taking the time to write this information down. I am creating word documents for cities that I am visiting. I am in London 1-2 times a year so I can definitely make this a reality. When I do visit, I will be sure to give you a shout out because I never would have known these stores existed without your comment. I am even more excited for the next time I am in town, so thank you again! I cannot wait to go book shopping. 🥰
@@TaylorsJourney Definitely don’t give me a shout out lol 😂 because my handle on here is very rude … lol 😂. Just say a guy who loves bookshops. That will keep you safe. Enjoy your time exploring these great stores.

Kudos for pronouncing 1:46 my home town more or less correctly! You Yanks often get this wrong. ‘Edinborrow’ is what I often hear. You nailed it! 👍
Your comment completely warmed my soul! Thank you! I truly tried my best to pronounce the name of your city properly. So thank you for this. I am grinning ear to ear typing my response to your comment.
@@TaylorsJourney👍😉
Why are traveling by yourself? It’s always best to travel with someone or a group
@@TaylorsJourney oooo okay, I’m looking to explore ALL of South America summer ‘25
@@TaylorsJourney you are welcome x
I wish these videos told viewers - clearly- where yhe poster comes from so comments can be put into context.
Hello, Thank you for this comment. I just wanted to clarify, so I can improve my content. When you said where the poster comes from do you mean my native country? If so I can start adding this in for viewers. I am from Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
.I just think that it helps to understand your responses to Edinburgh if the viewer knows your place of origin.
Thank you for this feedback in my future uploads I will begin to place this is my video to help provide more context for viewers.

What’s your skin colour got to do with anything ?
Always have to mention color and race your people
Hi thank you for your comment! I can tell you’re new here. I title my video this way for SEO purposes. Being that I am a black solo female traveler. ✈️ I don’t focus on race or ethnicity in the video.
This is such a low effort video. At least prepare bullet points before you start rumbling.
This feedback is fair. Typically, when I travel, I dont plan anything. I just get on a plane and go, but after this trip and after all the feedback I received. Its helped me become more strategic with traveling. Thank you for your constructive criticism. ❤
