This is so good, two charming guys doing and talking magic... i have to stop and recue every now and then because of all these cool workflows and tricks, its fantastic. I need more than a week to completely watch it, though. :)
I’ve had an M8 for maybe 3 years now and it’s still the best piece of hardware I’ve ever used. About to have 02 then it’s two M8s and my octatrack. Thanks for having Mikey on and thanks for doing M8 videos Matt
21:10 303 sound is a lot about accent which many people are forgetting when they are trying to emulate 303 on other devices .. on 303 accent does actually 3 things - it shortens filter decay, it adds filter amount mod and it increases volume .. with proper accent implementation you can get very 303-ish sound on elektron devices event through the filter is different .. but yeah, best for this purpose is definitely new Digitakt 2 becasues of new 4pole lowpass filter ..
Love this channel, not just for learning about the m8 but just making music in general. Great work. I’m hoping to get one in the next batch, but il have to be quick 😅
Thanks for the talk demo stuff. I wanna jam with a 303 now. Forgive a gear question, but what key switches are you using that make pressing the buttons on that so silent?
@@shifteleven Unfortunately any link I drop will be scrubbed by the automod, so just look up "ambient silent choc switches" from LowProKB. It has a bespoke mechanism which makes the bottoming out very very quiet, but it really needs heavier springs. You can replace them using the ones that come with the M8 stock browns, they pop right up with gentle prying from your fingernail!
best small size polyphonic synth size to connect with these small devices like M8 or Tracker Mini is definitely Audiothingies Micromonsta .. 12 voices poly, 2 part multi timbral, every part own FX chain .. it's amazing .. and sound is huge, synth modulation posibilities are pretty decent too..
Problem with the m8 is that it's a pain to program midi chords. I've got it paired with an mc-101 and j-6 to handle chords and arps. It's not quite as small, but it has 4 tracks and each track can have 16 different patches you can switch between with program changes. Another device I'd like to pair with it is the new S-1, which everyone is raving about. All of these devices are battery powered as well. The micromonsta does sound amazing from the demos I've watched, however.
@ 41:43 - Could you make an exponential curve (or some funky modulation at least) with the REP command by triggering the note on one table, then jumping to an aux table which only has a REP command? Which then maybe jumps to another table etc? Or would it always come back to the same row in the original table and trigger the note again? Unless you first jumped to another part of the song with all of the aux table jumping?....... Bear in mind that this is coming from a M8 noob who doesn't fully grasp some of these commands yet :) (YES I SAY "A MATE" AND NOT "AN EM EIGHT" BECAUSE I'M A BRITISH LAD 😄)
I learned a bunch of cool stuff from this video thanks guys! How difficult is it to replace the key by the silent choc twilight ? Needs soldering / dismounting the unit? What's the difference between 20gf and 35gf models? The OG caps fit? Thanks :)
For a person with zero music theory training (but with a good ear and skills with sound design) do you guys think this m8 MKII can be a good first instruments? Or should I go to the Polyend Play+ or another machina?
@@nicci_dee8292 I think Polyend Tracker supports MOD files? But I've never seen anyone use it... I do think that a standalone amiga tracker of some sort would be REALLY cool!
The Polyend Tracker mod. file input is quite broken, mind you. Not Polyend's fault - even on the Amiga most trackers aren't really file compatible due to different effects and so on.
Awesome to learn all these cool tracker workflow tricks from Mikey! most of them sound like I'll be able to use them on the picoTracker as well as the M8, can't believe I didn't notice until now that the KIL command on both takes the number of ticks as a parameter! @Ezbot though I have to pick you up on being wrong about midi cables, the cables *don't* have optocouplers in them, but almost all devices*do* have them, but only on their inputs, it's to protect the device. That's why passive TRS splitters are perfectly fine to use, at least as long as you don't go crazy with using lots of them!
I opened up the MIDI cables I manufacturer and they had the optocouplers inside them. Not all MIDI cables do, but they are in many MIDI cables, they act as a ground loop isolator.
@@EZBOT_ ok thanks I stand corrected! Wow I've never heard of them being in the cables but I guess it makes sense now that you say it. Did you ever find any inside TRS cables or only the classic big DIN plug ones? Now I'm curious and tempted to cut some of mine open to look inside,,,
@@EZBOT_ Now that I think about it some more, I guess these cables would be specifically for people to use with equipment that they thought wasn't MIDI spec compliant and didn't include its own optocoupler on its MIDI In ports as otherwise theres no point to have it inside the cables as well. EZbot do you know if thats the reason why the cables you make have them? otherwise it doesn't seem to make sense
I know 80s and syntheave but can M8 Tracker MK2 do more than these? It seem like everyone buy it just to make these even rhe promotion ads, also if I want my first music learning and making device, should I get it or OP-1 Field, just one without getting any extra addition to make music like ultra modern music?
The Tracker accels at 80s and synthwave genres because of how easily you can make those rhythms. However, you can make any kind of music on the M8. The OP-1F is a beautiful piece of art that also can make beautiful sounds and sometimes complete songs. But the M8 is a way of making music where once you get good at it, you can write albums like you would at your computer.
There is no country limitation when ordering. Dirtywave will send it to you from California and you will pay an added tax on the import. But that is totally feasible, no prob. Resellers like Thomann won't have it though, if it was the question.
@@Spetz34 yes, the problem is the import duties can be very high and a % of overall cost. I have to buy stuff and have my cousin mail things to me because , that costs 30-40$ while importing can add another $100 or more
What makes you say that? It's only a hardware refresh. The model 01 will still get continued support as it shares the same firmware and feature updates.

I'm glad someone actually makes sense , a 16th note on a tb303 is indeed a 32nd note gate length +32nd gate length rest

Your music is awesome!
So fantastic. Thank you both!!
A cool polysynth to use with the Midi Chord fxn is the Nymphes. ( Once you get used to it’s UI)
Wonderful session :) I always learn so much from these sessions with the M8, and always feel like I rediscover it.
Thanks for this video. Received my model:02 Friday. Owned two of the originals. Love this device and love the improvements to it.
I noticed the Polyend Tracker+ in the background. I got mine today and it’s insane. I’m waiting for my M8 Model 02 which I ordered in April.

Hard to find though, I have been on the waiting list for a bit now!
I was on the waiting list for something like a year and was just able to order one two weeks ago. Should arrive soon and can't wait to try it out!
There's also the DAFM arcade ym2151 with EIGHT part mutlitimbral support.

Guys, can you point channels that you mentioned 1:27:54 ? I found laama channel only :(
Bandcamp search:
FLOOR BABA
GRAZ
Can't share links in comments, sorry!
Very interesting, thanks !
Can I ask you how do you have Silent Keys ? Is there a tut or some info about it ?
Just order some choc twilights

Very interested by these silent keys too, do we need soldering / dismounting the unit to replace them by choc twilights keys?

the sound you make when deing shown the charging LED 🍷
Optocouplers provide galvanic isolation and are located in devices that send/receive Midi data, not in the cable.
Thanks!
Mind you the model 1 is also a really premium feeling unit ..

dang, I missed it. Can't wait for my model 2 to arrive :-D
Who was the artist they referred to as 'maximalist' m8 usage? I couldn't parse out the name clearly at all

Google choc twilight switches

M8 rocks for anyone and everyone. No theory needed
Sucks that literally nobody talked about the model:02 in their superbooth reviews in the youtube synth circuit.
a few folks did!!
Does it playback Amiga MOD files and fasttracker / impulstracker files?
No, it is an entirely different tracker workflow/format. Doesn't have 1:1 commands so it would never properly translate over.
