My wife after my xy arrived (from B&H) 3 days ago: “What did you order? Is that more gear?…” Me: “Well, you know how I just bought that little op-1? That was the latest release at the time. But now, that just released this other new synth, and I really need to test drive it to decide which one I like best… And I can then return the other one.”
    Wife: eye rolls.
Me: Sweating, scared to open the box. It all feels like a test, lol. First hour with op-xy was pretty inspiring and felt more intuitive and constructive that the 1f. Currently they are both set up all connected to a keystep pro (which is pretty awesome so far). And now I’m trying to rationalize keeping both, while also realizing “xy” sounds too much like “ex-wife.” Lol.

At the time I decrypted that OP-Z was OP-2 after OP-1. Next was easy to guess they added f-word to OP-1f by an obvious reason. OP-ExYife is the best of them all! 😂

I had been waiting for a TE device that would fill the gaps left by the OP-1 (even the Field), and as soon as I saw the videos about the OP-XY, I thought, "OK, thank you, TE-you did it! I want it."
Since I’m not a fan of having too many devices-it distracts me-I decided to sell some gear to fund this purchase. I sold the Syntakt (which I think is a fantastic machine), the Deluge (another exceptional groovebox), two Strymons, and a Zildjian Ride cymbal that I didn’t use often.
In short, I cleared out some stuff to focus on one device, and I can’t wait to try it out and enjoy it. I loved the OP-1, but its flaws drove me mad. Now, this new device seems like the perfection I’ve been waiting for.
I’m grateful to these manufacturers for creating these incredible tools that bring us so much joy.

I have used the OP1 and then the OP1 Field a lot. I have come to the conclusion that I am not made for the tape workflow, because I want to have control on the notes I record, and to be able to edit them afterwards. I am composing my first song on the XY and I am quite happy for the quality of the sounds too.
Today I sequenced four bars with drums on track 1, bass on track 2 and a choir doing a D minor chord on track 3. Then I put the SAMPLE engine on track 4 and sampled a chord progression using the auto-transpose. A little editing and I had my drums+bass+choir sequence ready, so I could delete tracks 1, 2 and 3... this is fantastic! XY is absolutely great FOR ME.. (personal opinion of course)

I said "I'm fckn getting it" day one because I know well its value for my music making, because OP-Z is in my bag for past 6 years. What I learned in past two weeks (incl. few days it pre-leaked), I don't have to apologize for getting it 😂 What I see/know/hear is an amazing forward looking device for music making. We still talk about love to music, right?
I'd love to hear more from you on full song making process (vs 4 bar beat). And regarding synth/DAW/fx connectivity + transferring project, so about continuity of music making flow (vs never letting your ideas see a light of day). What I do not want to see though is comparison to any MPCs, Electrons, SP-404 (huge), MC-707, or Deluge (no matter how you love it ;). While I have nothing against those, OP-XY is in totally different league and should not be aligned to any larger, no battery groovebox, even if you can buy 2 or 3 of those. Because if you compare anything to OP-XY it can be M8, MC-101, OP-1f/Z, EP-133/1320, or Polyend Tracker/Play, or Move, right? You would not compare OP-XY to Push3, and if you do, you can take Push to couch/backyard, but you will not drop it into your backpack. Fair comparison would be something as capable as Oxi + Vector synth for example. Though OP-XY is in one small package and with battery. It's also easy do the money math this way: capable sequencer + very portable synth == you arrive to a a same price very fast (if you even want to spend any more seconds on this nonsense) 😎
Looking forward for your impression on OP-XY, because I know you will be talking about MUSIC and GAS and Life of gear addict. Hopefully you can un-divide the nation with well informed and hand-on experience (no pressure). Maybe leaving some folks a leeway/helping hand who fell into trap of-overpriced-hipster-whining to finally look at the instrument and what it can do for them. Make friends friends again
..... but yeah .... OP-XY release is a serious test of tolerance and social skills, beside being GAS bomb explosion 🤣I'm still in shock. Because its a must for me and I keep thinking what else I'm selling to fund it .... just right after getting Muse that I'm not returning LOL

No need to justify it, it was inevitable.
And I’m sure you’ll love it and hope you do.
Looking forward to the reviews. Like you I’ve been watching all the reviews. I’d love to know about exporting into a DAW (and logic specifically ) and how deep that is, ie can you export by track for processing post, and how easy it is.
Second point I’d love you to explore for me, as a guitarist, drummer, producer etc, I like the op-1f. It’s a quirky workflow, but I like it, and it’s more similar to traditional song writing. For that reason I think I’ve never truly clicked with any sequencer, and I’ve tried a few (not the oxy, but the hapix squarp, Elektron and a few others). So my question is, for people like me can you give some insights into op-1f vs XY. Not as a “one is better” thing, more of a; if you like this probably this one for you, if you like that, maybe the other one.
Whilst I recognise the TE stuff is a lot of money, I don’t think it’s ridiculous for what it is, the work that goes in and the total package. And also the resale values hold pretty good. So I wish people would focus on the positives or invest their energy elsewhere.
I think it’s inevitable the gas will get me and I’ll eventually get an XY, but I’m not sure if it will be as enjoyable for me personally as the OP-1f journey has been. Everyone is different and is inspired by different things.
Hoping our views help me one way or the other!

I managed to snatch a used OP-Z for less than a tenth of the cost of the OP-XY. Yes it was bend but a quick bake at 100C of the casing sorted that out. The OP-Z effects quality for example is not that great and it often sounds congested. I suppose that's where work in DAW comes in ideally with individual tracks being exported but I doubt it works ?
I hope you will compare OPZ and OP XY from an audio quality stand point.

I have and OP-1 and OP-Z but never bought a OP-1 Field as I considered it too expensive. Like you, I think the OP-XY has more to offer than the OP-1 Field especially as it's £1899 in the UK (only £100 more expensive than the OP-1 Field) but I still feel for that amount of money I would rather buy a Push 3 Standalone which fully integrates with a DAW and costs less. Interestingly, the Polyend Synth which costs 499 euros and looks like an Ableton Move, but with more encoders, pads and has a larger colour display, offers a similar capability where sequences are automatically transposed to a chosen scale, plus the note mode pad scale layout automatically changes to reflect that chosen scale. I am looking forward to your OP-XY review.

😅Yes, we need more details about the XY. So far I understand that it is based on the OP-Z which I absolutley love.
That being said, the OP-Z already has an "intelligent" transpose feature that can be sequenced. Didn't have a fancy name though. I use it all the time.
I am really interested in polyphony limits, note stealing in the context of all 8 machine tracks, recording off-grid and if its true that the resolution is 1920 ppqn. Which seems outrages.
And the quality of the master compressor.
Can it mix and produce tracks to be ready for mastering and publishing?
That would be deciding factors for me.
    Thanks!!!

😂 It was hilarious to watch your two videos back to back where you first say that you can't afford it and then you buy it anyway 👌I really can't justify it at the moment, but I totally get it! Looks like they fixed all the problems I always had with the OP-1 workflow and why I never got one. And honestly it's a bit funny for me that people complain about a 2K price tag. A pro double bass or a clarinette will set you back a lot more than an OP-XY. Behringer and Korg spoiled us with all their cheap entry level synths. The OP-XY isn't for people who buy Behringer synths, i.e. me. I take months if not years to justify a 140€ Behringer synth, so the OP-XY isn't a device that I will buy anytime soon. Maybe in a few years when I've thought about it for a long time and it's been in my shopping basket 20 times. Still unlikely though. I don't think I ever would have built my modular if I had to spend that much money in one go.

I have an original op-1, some keys are malfunctioning and I am unable to get a replacement keyboard for it. I have an OP-Z with double trigger issues. No rectification is possible. Great devices, but no responsibility. When you sell something expensive you must also provide value.

I don't think anyone begrudges people who happen to buy it. I have enough money to buy it, but i'd never sink that much money on something that could get stepped on and destroyed instantly. I don't own a thousand dollar phone for the same reason - despite it being within my budget.
The hate shouldn't transfer to the purchasers, but I'm sure a few salty people do that. It's fine to hate the price vs feature comparison, and the company that's more of a luxury brand than a music company.
The problem is that this should absolutely be half the cost or less. I just don't see anything justifying the cost as far as internals and processors and such go. The R&D cost is also negligible considering this is more of a tweak on an existing concept and a lot of the groundwork for them was already laid out in previous products.
I'd love to own this, but I just can't justify it.

I just have too much great hardware in the house that fascinates me and that I haven't yet fully squeezed out. For people complaining about the price (yes - it's more than I can afford for a hardware synth) they should be glad they don't play timpani in an orchestra. You could buy 10 OP-XY's for a professional set of four timpani drums.
It's the same with other professional orchestral instruments, although not quite as extreme. Two OP-XY's will get you a bass trombone, for instance.
Good luck with your follow-ups on the OP-XY! I'll likely follow along because, even though I won't ever be able to afford one, I enjoy watching what people can do with these devices.

The comments on all these TE videos are a toxic cesspool. All the anger is based in something deep down that these people have. It can’t possibly be that these people aren’t just now finding out that there’s a whole world of stuff out there that they can’t afford or that doesn’t line up with their value proposition. $2,000 for a purse!?!? $20,000 for a purse!?!? Why would I buy that when I can buy X? Because the product isn’t for you… plain and simple.
Let’s look at watches… you can start with a nice JDM Seiko at $1200 (why would I buy the Tudor) then you make a bit more money and you save for the Tudor (why would I buy the Rolex), then you become more successful and realize Rolex makes great watches… you buy the Rolex (why would I buy the JLC)… then you become a bit more successful and you buy the JLC (why would I buy the Vacheron)… see where I’m going? None of these watches have more features than the previous or are any better at keeping time.
At every level of income, there’s a whole world of stuff you can’t afford and when you make it to the next level, then there’s a whole new world of stuff you can’t afford.

Of course you have a point but I think the reactions are not purely about the price or what we can afford. People also are riled up about the Ableton Move or the Yamaha Seqtrak which are cheap. It has just gotten so difficult to determine what will actually inspire you to be more creative and get some results and what is just a another box with buttons. all the videos of all the geartubers end with 'but if it is for you no one can tell you'. that is mostly because each new thing is reviewed as if it existed alone in the universe. i would love to see comparisons between all these groveboxes and their workflows between the different manufacturers and see some actual opinions about what people still use after a year. what is actually working as an idea starter and can properly translate to a daw and what is just a jamming toy which never will be used outside that box etc. for that it would be nessescary for a geartuber to actually be transparent about his worflow as a musician or at least do a jam with the device in question like Bad Gear so we can actually see it in use beyond the 5 features marketing wants to push upon us.

      @OroborosEternalLife Місяць тому

There's also a lot of positive toxicity when it comes to TE stuff. With a watch, you know the limited functionality of it. You're not buying it for its functionality. A synth, however, you are buying it for the functionality and features. It's not solely a price thing or some type of psychological envy that's at play. For the price you have to look at its features, build quality, functionality, etc and compare it to the market. Why should I spend my money on something that is severely limited in features, not so great build quality, and have to fight it to get basic controls and features (like undo control, more tracks, assigning effects to different tracks instead of just the master) that an old $200 macbook air with some cheap or free software can handily do without a sweat and all without having to learn a new piece of gear? One could argue that those who spend $2300 on this are coping with an overpriced and limited piece of gear that has no excuses to not include basic functions and features.
It's all subjective though. People are allowed to criticize things. You're still allowed to like it and do what you want with your money. You can still make amazing stuff with it. Just remember to not attach your identity to the gear and to not take any criticisms towards it as an attack on you.

@@joergbrathauer2302good points, but the people buying OP-XY aren’t cross shopping the seq track. I think that, even with the build issues, the OP-Z is better than the seq track.

As for the build quality…. I’ve only had it for a few days, but I did own an OG OP-1 and I can tell you that the build quality is pretty great. Better than any other handheld. I’ve also owned the M8.
In addition… I think that if people genuinely didn’t care or just didn’t see the value, there wouldn’t be nearly as many negative comments.

@@OroborosEternalLifeit does 95% of what the Digitakt II does and does some things it doesn’t do. Sound locks on the DT are pretty great, the DT has more send effects per track, and it has more tracks (non polyphonic).
XY has half the tracks but they’re polyphonic, 2 send effects (instead of 4), less modulation, external send effects (not on the DT), a better song mode (IMO - maybe a bit less powerful but more usable), and a workflow thats also a bit quicker, and velocity sensitive keys. I’ve also been an Elektron user for a long time. Not a hater (I own many), just sharing some differences.
Is it super expensive? Absolutely… but people calling UA-camrs out for not talking about the price being a major downside is dumb. Their job is to tell you what the thing does. You decide if the value for you is there. Just like any other product.
For me… I have a little baby and I can’t make it down to my desk much anymore. I value being able to do most of what my existing setup can do from bed or from the couch. The lack of a screen on the OP-Z made that not really an option for me and I like the workflow of the XY so that’s why I bought it.
