That is spot on video, thank you so much , I’m a technician and that was explained perfectly , I replaced my battery, but removed the positive fuse block and checked , found some green in connectors , but charging now , likely need an alternator soon , so this was extremely helpful, thank you , roger
Huge thanks dude. Nissan packs everything so tightly on these trucks that most repairs only have one way of working. One note (sorry if it's been covered) - the bottom bracket is only held on to the engine block by one bolt. It shifts on that bolt really easy when prying the alternator out. It's easy to assume the bracket is bent or the store gave you the wrong alternator when it doesn't line up. Just loosen that bolt when installing the alternator. It makes it a little easier. Thanks again for this video.
Thank you for the video. I just had to replace mine. The only caveat that I would add is to ensure that the threaded insert in the rear of the alternator for the 14mm drive fastener is fully seated in the alternator housing. Mine was not fully seated at first and I could not force the alternator onto the mounting bracket. I did not fully remove the bracket that is held on with the long 12mm fastener. I found that simply loosening it gave me all the freedom that I needed. Also of note, this is a perfect time to replace the serpentine belt, idler pulley, and belt tensioner. At 100k I found that the bearings on my tensioner, and idler pulley were worn. I was also able to re-use the routing ziptie mount. It seems on the 2010 model the ziptie mount is not on the back of the alternator, but on the back attached to a standoff built into the alternator housing. I was able to push the ziptie mount out using a pick. Best of luck to you on your second try.
Great video. I got the battery and brake light on my dash and less than 12v on the battery so I am pretty sure it's my alternator. Thanks to your video I just might take a shot at replacing it myself.
My 2006 Xterra is having electrical issues. Relatively low miles at 134k. Going through the passenger side fender liner seems to be the easiest way to do this job without pulling off a ton of stuff from the top. Will try this way as shown in the video. Excellent video brother. Bless you and yours.
thanks for the informative vid. I figured the side would be easiest, but wanted to do my due diligence. Replacing my dads oem alternator that went out at 80k, 2015 year. Year old battery left him standed. Only making 13.0v and bearing is consistently making noise. I think poor battery health and connectivity/corrosion issues contributed to its early death. Oh well

Where did you get your alternator, and how much was it? Seeing how you have 100k more miles than I currently do, makes me not second guess buying a brand new alternator, now if I can find one that produces 150amp do sound system doesn’t keep draining battery

@@TheAdamConners a refurbished was what was available, with this being my work truck I didn't have time to wait lol at least it came with a lifetime warranty
Great video! I know you’ve streamlined/edited it. Did it take a fair bit of “wiggle” to get the old alternator out. I’ve got all three bolts out but it isn’t wiggling my side to side. Mostly just moving up and down
@@russwehnerjr2077 you’re going to have to push/pull sideways enough to press that …fitted nut? I’m not sure what it’s called but it has to compressed to pull out. Just subscribed . Great video and well explained. My truck was parked for a week and when I went to start dead battery . Jumped it and fired up but smoke from serpentine belt and it snapped before I got around to cab to turn off. I may have. Seized pulley on alternator . Charging light was on I noticed so that pulley wasn’t turning I guess . What brand alternator did you use ? Nice job on mileage.
I believe it’s the Ultima brand from O’Reilly’s? I didn’t have the time to find an oem alternator unfortunately. Yea that’s definitely typical seized pulley. You’ll knock this install out in no time.
Great video! The quick tutorial is the way to go. Mine is charging but I can hear a bearing ready to go. Sounds like its coming from the alternator. I think I'm going to go ahead and do it now before I get stranded.
Look under the seat and unplug the pigtail connector that connects the seat to the safety system. Then stick a paper clip in the holes in the connector and It might work.
This job is simple but not easy, I'm having trouble with the terminal. On the 2012 model it has little teeth that fit into notches on the housing and it's driving me crazy.
All the disconnecting and reconnecting the plugs and nuts on the alternator are a pain in the ass I’ll admit. Hardest part for sure. I couldn’t see anything.

To replace the alternator you don’t have to do that, but it’s recommended so you don’t accidentally shock yourself or something. I didn’t 😬

The wire clips in the back pop out with a screwdriver. Do that first while the alternator is stable.

Do I need to remove that bolt that goes into the bracket and alternator? Or can I just remove the 2 longer bolts?
I never thought about it that way. Did you try it? Did it work leaving the bracket on?
