I enjoy your videos Tom. According to the The U.S. Energy Information Administration, renewables were neck and neck with coal in 2021. Coal 22% and renewables at 21%. The rest being nuclear and natural gas. As we push towards EVs it’s so important not forget about the massive increase that’s needed to power them which hopefully will be primary renewables. I was surprised that solar was only 3% in 2021. There is a lot of work to be done to get greener. I’m really excited about the full size Transit van EVs. That’s a large commercial market that can really use EVs practically in many places.
Not only is having it identical to gas F150 good for reliability and development time, but it means all of the stuff you got to fit your same-size F150 bed, will fit in the 2022 Lightning. For me, that is my Go Fast Camper. Can't wait till my Lightning arrives!
The example of the gas generator replacing the Ford lightning as an electricity source is really not apples to apples. If one has a fully charged F150 on hand, they are always at the ready for up to 10 days back up. One has to continually swap out fresh gas, and LOTS OF IT (like what, 50-100 gallons) if they wish to power their home for 10 days on a gas generator.
Let's be honest, how often does power go out for the average joe? Once every 2-3 years and for an hours or two? This is just a gimmick, and an expensive one. Sure, there likely are a few people that would find use for it, but to the masses this feature is pointless and pricy. But then... people buy trucks to drive them empty year round... why not add another useless feature to the mix?

If they can really keep the cost down on that with the help of LFP batteries it might just become one of their most popular vehicles ever. Great review, as always, Tom. I have a small business and wanted to get in line for the Lightning ⚡️, but it looks like you need a fleet in order to qualify for the base $40k work truck. Wondering out loud what the minimum would be to classify as a fleet?!? Never bought a Ford before, but this looks promising.
Tom another awesome video. Thanks. I’ve got a reservation in case I can’t wait for either of the two Rivian reservations I’ve had for two years and two months so far.

I would love it if they made a 2-door EV Lightning compact pick-up!!! Just like the SVT one back in the day. Hi, Tom. Thanks for your great videos. Towards the end of this video you mentioned quote services, which brought to mind something slightly different - Costco's auto purchase program. Do you have thoughts about when using a program like that is a good idea? My sense is that these programs give you an "off the rack" break on pricing (if available), but perhaps not as good a break as one you might negotiate yourself, but you have to have a bit of skill to negotiate.
Great, review, Tom! I really enjoy your reviews your common sense approach to your reviews. I would also like to say I appreciate your comment about EV misinformation. I’m a Tesla owner and have a good number of people ask me questions directly from misinformation. Everyone has been understanding when I explain and clear up that misinformation but it’s still pretty prevalent, so thank you!
Excellent informative video as always. This is a glimpse of the future. As long as you don't plan to do a lot of very long distance heavy towing you can make a good case for this if you want an EV truck. Setting the additional cost for hook up aside, yes, Ford claims you can run your house on this for 3 days in the event of a power outage. That may not be enough in some areas of the country. Then you have no power in your house or vehicle. IMHO the hybrid w/7.2 kw option may be the better choice if you are worried about powering your house. One of the neatest quirky features is actually having a trunk. Probably put a crimp in some bed box sales. I saw another channel do a towing test on the Lightning with 10,000 pounds. Not sure why anyone cares when towing 10,000 pounds, but part of the testing was a 0-60 time. I forget the time but I was impressed that it chirped the tires on launch.
Tom, sorry to argue, but as an owner of the Lightning it is nowhere NEAR as quiet as a Lexus LS! I've driven several models of each. Here is why: the wind noise turns on high in the Lightning around 65 mph, in an LS that also has laminated windows it's more like 90 mph. The Lightning also has the high frequency motor noise which is frankly very annoying. Windows up all the time for me. The LS drivetrain is low frequency and inoffensive. I even notice noise from the inverters leaking through the firewall into the quiet Lightning cabin. While it's initially impressive to get into a big dampened EV like the Ford, the LS is SOOO much more refined from a NVH perspective.
You think they'll use this platform with smaller wheelbase and body, or do you think they'll base it on the Mach-E platform? Probably somewhere in between, but the Expedition version should be a no-brainer for next year, right?
About powering your home. As long as you don't plan on using any more than 7,200 watts all you need is a generator receptical installed with a breaker interlock , so you're not allowed to close your main breaker and generator breaker simultaneously. Connect your 240 volt twistlock receptacle located in the truck be to the receptacle you Normally connect to your generator. Turn off your main breaker turn on your generator breaker , activate the rear recepticals and you're powering your home just as if you connected it to a 7200 watt generator. Only no gas fumes. You will have to turn such things off that draw too much power electric oven, electric clothes dryer etcetera. But during a power outage it's time to conserve anyway.
Thanks, Tom! Nicely done Ford. The gang at TFL demonstrated the range limitation to towing a heavy trailer with their recently purchased Lightning …roughly 100mi.
@@dmitchellhomes Seems to me it's an issue with trailers, not the vehicles themselves. It's the trailers that require the extra fuel. Nobody else needs the extra battery capacity to carry around all day.
Tom, love your reviews. Really, I’ve seen a few of these reviews of this truck and yours is great. I must admit, the whole EV thing makes me nervous…I don’t believe the infrastructure will not be able to handle the influx of new buyers….but I digress. Please keep the great adult reviews coming!
Certainly a valid point, I know electric companies around my location are planning for this by offering reduced rates during off hours to help prevent this scenario. More work is required however!
As the truck has IRS at the rear, why dont Ford make a lowered short wheelbase muscle truck version? It would be insanely cool. And fast with a slightly larger battery it would be a 600+ hp vehicle.
This is a modified F-150 platform where GM Silverado EV BT1 is a EV from ground up next year. Wait for Ford 2025 redesign. The Ford F-150 Lightning is already being promised a redesign for the 2025 model year. Reuters mentioned this when discussing Ford’s production plans for the Lightning.
If they sold the Pro trim with the option for adaptive cruise, I'd already be on a waiting list, even though it's a larger vehicle than I want. If/when the day comes that they offer a Maverick or Ranger Lightning with adaptive cruise on a medium or low trim level, I will buy one.
Excellent video. Tons of info & realistic about what the truck can do. Amazing Ford is 1st with a pickup truck…. & and it has a dealer network if you have issues.
TFT does a nice review of the towing inabilities of electric pickups. But this was a very good review of the total package. I like how Tom is specific about things he likes and doesn’t like. I feel that a vehicle of this magnitude should be able to easily drive, with a full load of passengers and gear, from Seattle to Coeur d’Alene without stopping. That’s 300 miles. Pretty iffy in summer.
I don't really think they're aiming at the Coeur d'Alene crowd to be early adopters on this one. There's plenty of truck buyers still left in El Cajon to fuel sales for years before reaching the back woods of Idaho.
@@MrNicholg it’s just an example. 300 mile trip going from sea level (at Seattle), over Snoqaulmie Pass(2700’), back down to the Columbia river and up to Coeur d’Alene (2200’). It’s a good workout for any vehicle. And one taken by innumerable people during the Pandemic to escape the restrictions in Seattle for the laxity of the State of Idaho.
No. It should not be able to do that trip without stopping. That would be a huge waste of a pack most times. Chill out, spend a half hour, get some lunch while charging,
@@DrivenCarReviews this is where we can agree to disagree. Tomorrow I’ll drive to the Concours at Forest Grove. 225 miles round trip. That would be perfect for a 300 mile rated EV without the need to plug in somewhere. In a few years when I can afford to purchase another new car I won’t hesitate to purchase an EV.
Not in the market, not ever going to get a truck, and I already own an ev. Yes I watched the whole thing: it's Tom Voelk after all. Also: liters of cargo capacity, not the baffling "cubic feet"! Thank you!!
@@justrandomthings319 combined population of North and South America: 1,022,300,000. Population of the United States: 350,000,000. Pretty sure we use litres actually. (Never said I was in the US.)
I'm torn. I got called this week by my dealer to expext to be in the next wave to order a MY23 Lightning. I was a day 1 reservation holder in the first few minutes. Truthfully I expected to have one now, but my dealer was only allocated 3 and I'm sitting next in line at 4/210. I just purchased a 22 Lariat 502a powerboost in the meantime. I've been really impressed with the efficiency of the hybrid, the pro power generator , and other features. I do not tow, I mainly use it as a daily family hauler in suburbia. I'd be a perfect case example for going EV. The hybrid is so compelling after living with it for a few weeks. Pricing is keeping me wondering about going EV now. A similarly equipped Lightning Lariat to my powerboost is a tad over 10k more before tax incentives ( I paid well below MSRP on my Powerboost order). That would buy me a lot of gas and leave me the flexibility of road tripping in ease as well as being able to tow no issues if we need to.
One note Tom, while yes, while towing an EV will halve the battery range, same can almost be said for gas powered vehicles as their range is curtailed the same with the added weight and reduced aerodynamics of a travel trailer.
Impressive except if you are an angler in Minneapolis who trailers a boat up to lakes Mille lacs, Leach, Woods or Vermilion. Don’t know if it will make and where do you charge up there for the return and how much time? I will wait until this problem is solved. Until then, I like my gas powered Ram.
I lease my F-150s three years at a time to tow my boat about 40% of my allotted lease miles, including an annual trip to Florida and back. As much as I would like one, I can’t imagine the difficulties in charging along I-95.
Within a couple of years battery tech will increase range and towing a caravan will have better range than a ice car. Future pick ups will have a range of up to 500 to 600 mile range.
76k ..... plus dealer stealer's markup would be no middle class consideration. I know EV is next big thing but many people just can't afford it. -- Frunk is the best feature with two golf bag can be stored.
Engine sounds from old cars will go away and sound like supped-up lawnmowers over time. People are just used to that. They are not organically endearing.
Ford: Just make a version with a compact, light range extender (3cyl turbo), then trim that heavy. expensive battery in half: You'd then have an ideal truck (no range worries) that could log 20,000 all-electric miles annually (plugged in every night).
5.0 F-150 for me! Don't trust the power grid down here in Texas to handle more electric vehicles. We are already on "conservation" measures due to the grid not holding up. Have you had a chance to review the Hybrid F-150 yet? That seems like a nice mix!
Ever consider solar panels? That’s my next step. Nobody mentions the best feature of an EV… no more trips to the gas station. Your home is now the gas station. A solar setup just for a vehicle can be completely off the grid. Freedom from the gas companies and freedom from the electric companies.
For the vast majority of people buying trucks as a mere people mover, this is exactly what they need. And next gen gotta bump the battery pack to 800 volt architecture for faster chargers. Even for towing a boat to a near lake makes sense since you're likely to live close to it. But anything heavy-duty it has a 100 mile range and we're a decade or so away from battery tech to provide enough juice to drag a camper 250 miles. Also, ditch the shifter and do a column one like Mercedes-Benz, tesla already copied and it works.
Love your videos. But the advertisements were out of control and overbearing. Same two ads EVERY SINGLE CHAPTER? Sorry, huge turn-off. I know ads are critical to support the channel but I hope future videos are not this polluted with ads.
Great review, Tom... I think the F150 Lighting is cool today, but in a year will seem obsolete when the SilveradoE and GMC Sierra EV come to market with much more range, faster charging, 4 wheel steering, and a longer bed. A $76K truck with no wireless phone charging? Wow!
In a year this will still be a real body on frame pickup truck chassis with an all aluminum body while Silverado EV will still be a car like unibody and conventional rust prone sheet metal.
@@heathwirt8919 Car like unibody? HAHA! ya, let's put them on test equipment and see which design is more rigid, which has more flex? HummerEV can remove the roof panels and Silverado E can have a removable mid-gate because the chassis is so stiff. Did you listen to Tom's review of the Lightning, he says it has flex and body shimmies over bumps, none of that in the Hummer Chassis, which will carryover to the SilveradoE. So in Summary the "car like unibody" on the Silverado E is much more rigid, and still has all the other benefits mentioned before. As for Rust, Did you watch Tom's review and see the half shafts on the Lightning are already rusty on a brand new truck? and that steel frame, and the rear suspension with very low ground clearance, awful. To top it off you know Ford is engineering a new Lightning which will be built at Blue Oval city starting in 2025, and guess what? UNIBODY.
GM has never led the truck segment in quality or reliability, and rarely wins any comparison tests, but there's a first for everything in our hopes and dreams, eh? Maybe next year.
@@MrNicholg GM sells more full sized pickup trucks than Ford the last 3 years, and this year the gap is growing. Don't need hopes and dreams, I have a Hummer EV which will crush the Lightning in nearly every category, and I can extrapolate when the same components transfer into a more aerodynamic body, with more reasonable sized tires, what it will mean. I am getting over 350 miles of range in mixed driving in the HummerEV, and can easily assume the Silverado will have over 50% less aerodynamic drag, smaller frontal area, and less rolling resistance, AKA GM is going to blow out their 400 mile range estimate for the SilveradoE, I am think it will be 450, and with increased efficiency, GM's massively superior charging curve really opens a gap. I have been averaging over 260 kW 10-65%, Ford averages about 100 kW in that range maybe a bit less.
It does have the same annoying chimes. I think he was talking about in the Platinum trim there is a simulated engine sound you can enable in the cabin.
Hmm, if only some countries that mine for rare metals and use child and slave labor would be considered, they do not all follow clean guidelines, also, CO2 is not a good barometer on “clean green”. But I’m hoping for newer better battery chemistry that will push the ev model forward (LiS). I like ev’s, they are just too heavy and expensive for me right now.
80A charging with a 100amp breaker when your whole house is 200a if newer, a lot of older houses have only 100a panels, 240V 20A (16A continuous) is what most people will use and take 20 hours. EV will take a lot longer to adapt at those rates.
I love everything about this vehicle except how little range it has when towing. But that is a criticism of all EV trucks. The tech just isn't ready for prime time towing yet
Then the airy fairy, nampy pamby, get their panties in a bunch for any reason conservative truck buyers would have hissy fit. Much as it pains me to say so, Ford knows what it is doing in this instance. :)
That would have cost money. The point here was to offer something different in the powertrain that could be sold with existing parts in the bin that would hide the tech geek stuff from the wannabe peterbuilt crowd.
BMW Korea is reporting to charge a subscription for heated seats and heated steering wheel… I wonder what the “Hey …” will respond with on your request?!? 😝

When Ford makes the Explorer version, the cash registers are going to chime so loudly the sky will be full of angles.
Good stuff. Thanks for sharing, Tom!
Thanks, Tom!
Nicely done Ford.
The gang at TFL demonstrated the range limitation to towing a heavy trailer with their recently purchased Lightning …roughly 100mi.
They also did a Tesla Model X that was about the same or worse. Just sucks the life force out of the battery.
@@DrivenCarReviews Towing long distance with EV's is something we need a step change in battery tech for.
@@dmitchellhomes Seems to me it's an issue with trailers, not the vehicles themselves. It's the trailers that require the extra fuel. Nobody else needs the extra battery capacity to carry around all day.
@@MrNicholg Ya, BEV good for personal transportation, but not for real work, I think that is your point?

Fantastic review! Thanks Tom!
Most people charge overnight when energy demands are low compared to daytime hours. The electric companies will expand as the demand goes up.
As the truck has IRS at the rear, why dont Ford make a lowered short wheelbase muscle truck version? It would be insanely cool. And fast with a slightly larger battery it would be a 600+ hp vehicle.
I think it's hard to put a larger battery in a shortened truck. It fills the frame as it is.
Excellent review of the Ford F150 Lightning 🌩!
If they sold the Pro trim with the option for adaptive cruise, I'd already be on a waiting list, even though it's a larger vehicle than I want.
If/when the day comes that they offer a Maverick or Ranger Lightning with adaptive cruise on a medium or low trim level, I will buy one.
Thorough review as normal. 👍
Great review of a great truck by a great reviewer! Not sure I need one of these, but would love one of these.

Hey Tom, great video as always. There seems to be scammers pretending to be you in the comments.
Nice problem to have Sean. Hope it works out.
@@DrivenCarReviews I need you to make my decision for me ha! Thanks for another great video.
@@AUav8r05 Ha! Not sure what I want for lunch so there’s that.
@@DrivenCarReviews I hear you ha. Perhaps leftovers?
good to hear the f-150eeeeee doesn't suck
One note Tom, while yes, while towing an EV will halve the battery range, same can almost be said for gas powered vehicles as their range is curtailed the same with the added weight and reduced aerodynamics of a travel trailer.
Yup, but with EVs you have fewer places to refuel (more than likely) and charging with the trailer connected is problematic in most cases.
Quality reviews as always, Tom Voelk!
THANKS for your review, and especially your summary comments about coal, electric vehicles being cleaner overall and not spreading misinformation.
76k ..... plus dealer stealer's markup would be no middle class consideration. I know EV is next big thing but many people just can't afford it. -- Frunk is the best feature with two golf bag can be stored.
Nice review. Checked out the car buying service and notice that BMW is not in the pulldown. Am I missing something?

Engine sounds from old cars will go away and sound like supped-up lawnmowers over time. People are just used to that. They are not organically endearing.
No American flags on the interior trim in Canadian F150s
Ford: Just make a version with a compact, light range extender (3cyl turbo), then trim that heavy. expensive battery in half:
You'd then have an ideal truck (no range worries) that could log 20,000 all-electric miles annually (plugged in every night).
You'd need a bigger generator than that. You'd also lose the front storage.
It is called frunking rather than tailgating.
Thanks for clarifying the EV facts at the end! Clear and honest conversations are important!!
Gas pumps don't run when the power is out.
Hmmm, I'm not getting nearly that many but I understand your concern. Thanks for letting me know, I'll see what I can do.
No tones on startup? Honestly, it’s probably for the best. Ford tones and chimes just sound… chintzy to me
It does have the same annoying chimes. I think he was talking about in the Platinum trim there is a simulated engine sound you can enable in the cabin.

"Serene" ride (spelling)
Hmm, if only some countries that mine for rare metals and use child and slave labor would be considered, they do not all follow clean guidelines, also, CO2 is not a good barometer on “clean green”. But I’m hoping for newer better battery chemistry that will push the ev model forward (LiS). I like ev’s, they are just too heavy and expensive for me right now.
A nice truck, but the fact is it will be over $100k for years to come. Not really an option for the middle class American.

They could of made the interior more futuristic
Then the airy fairy, nampy pamby, get their panties in a bunch for any reason conservative truck buyers would have hissy fit. Much as it pains me to say so, Ford knows what it is doing in this instance. :)
That would have cost money. The point here was to offer something different in the powertrain that could be sold with existing parts in the bin that would hide the tech geek stuff from the wannabe peterbuilt crowd.
