For the 10% of truck owners here in the U.S. who actually tow and haul for distance, the Lightning isn’t the best. Not correct at all, range in terms of bettery capacity and technology is the current limit but no gas power engine will ever compare to electric motor torque which is directly link to it pulling power. Must electric trucks has one gear ratio compare to the many needed by gas engines to do same work. I believe the current problems with gearbox on electric trucks is the loss in efficiency in terms of bettery and the fact the electric trucks will need beefier gearbox and new clutch technology to handle the instant torque they produce. There is a reason the biggest motors in the world are electric motors power by gas engines substations.

How is it useful? Unless you want to leave your key in the truck at all times, it's hard to see a use case for it. It is also ugly as the gates of hell, but i guess that's in theme with the rest of the truck.

There is no shortlisting it. This begins at 45k$, it is half the starting price of a Rivian or an Hummer. Most F150s are mid-range, around 55k. It is still at least 25k less than its "competitors". This truck is a no-brainer, of course you should go right ahead and buy it.

Not sure you can since it's a proximity key...if it's near the vehicle you can unlock it...and inside the vehicle is near the vehicle in my opinion 🤷♂️
Why not get a jar and put in your center console? Those coin holders only hold like 5 of each coin. After it’s full, you just gonna throw them around the cab anyways
I think this is a thing in North American vehicles due to toll roads where you pull up to a toll booth and throw change into a basket that feeds a coin counter
He didn't even mention what I think is the coolest feature: if you lose power at your home you can power your home from the Lightning for up to two days on a full charge.
I come up to downed trees blocking the entire road a lot more often than I have seen moose in the road, and I lived in moose country for half my life. If you live anywhere that has moose you want the bottom of your windshield to be as close to 6' off the ground as possible. Much lower and you just take out the legs and have 1,500 lbs of deer coming across your hood. If you do come across one and manage to stop, make sure that you honk your horn and flash your lights. They love that.
Love this truck! Awesome feature that it can power your whole house for three days! Looks cool and very practical! Right now it’s the only EV I’d consider buying!
For such a heavy vehicle, 40m stopping distance from 60mph is actually pretty impressive. Highway Code would have you believe that a 'normal' car would take 55m. I'd be interested to find out if there are any cars tested by CarWow over the past say 5 years have taken anywhere close to that distance to stop. Mat's 911 Turbo S takes only 29m - that's 26m less than quoted in the Highway Code!
Plus May was on top of the white line I can be quite slippy adding to the stopping distance. He was probably on the white line because The pick-up needed that much of the road
This was awesome lol. I always love watching our UK friends talk about pick up trucks. Here in Northern Alberta Canada it seems like 80 percent of the vehicles on the road are full size pick ups. We love our trucks. Great Video!
I think this is perhaps the most significant electric vehicle for sale in America. The F150 has been the number one selling vehicle in America for years. ford in their wisdom decided to make the electric variant just like the regular one. This is not going to convert any tow haulers But it will create a completely new segment of buyers for Ford. People who have never even considered a truck, Like me, also people who would have never considered an electric anything. The spacious luxury car interior. Its ability to carry almost anything. the bonus covered storage in the front. Ford answered questions with this truck that no one had even asked yet. The other 2 available options may be more dynamic but they will never be as everyday approachable And familiar as a Ford pick up.
Or just hear me out, You could buy this truck in Canada for $115k (as listed assuming they don’t add a mark up ) or you could buy a comparable 5.0 or 3.5 ecoboost fully loaded for just under $68 k . Then you can use the $47k to pay for 17 years worth of fuel and oil changes or pay for 8 years worth of fuel and oil changes plus have the difference to replace the whole drive train in 8 years.
Bravo! At least someone on youtube comment section has brains. My buddy bought a used 5.0 with tow package before the pandemic for 22,000 70k miles. I bought mine used at auction 10 years ago for even cheaper. I swear the media pays people to comment on electric reviews on UA-cam. You talk to most people and they could barely afford a $35,000 car let alone $100,000 vehicle. Yeah they said $39,000 starting but that was marked up $8,500 before first delivery. And it was one of the magazines that showed a Lariat was 80,000 and The Limited was $92,000. If you're selling a product that is worse than the one you're trying to replace wouldn't you want to make it cheaper?
I would buy this car for the suspension, the front trunk, and the ability to charge my home for 3 days. IMO Ford should have made the Hybrid with a bigger battery, independent suspension and a factory bed cover and you have the perfect American vehicle.
I just priced it out on Ford's website builder for $83K CAN, with the long range battery and the high output. This is a very good value for new tech, but not setup for towing. Just light-duty stuff. Way to go Ford!
That key pad is the best feature that Ford has ever done. Costs about $3 to put in the truck and I have used it daily for the past 20 years. Never removed my keys from my truck ever.... So I can never loose them.
Ironically enough Lightening's short range is far more appropriate in Britain. The max 320-mile range is acceptable in America only if we're talking about commuter vehicles. Pickups are for the wide open spaces. An ICE truck with a V8 has about 500 miles of range, refuels in 10 minutes and there is no shortage of fueling options.
It's true. I think the f150 would work over there if it wasn't for it's size. I guess that's where the ranger comes in. Brits already like Ford as a brand so maybe an electric ranger will be the one that turns them to the dark side.
Agreed. We are NE of DC and NW of Baltimore. My in-laws have a place near Fort Lauderdale, we have friends in KC and family along the north shore of Lake Ontario. I want to be able to get to any of these destinations in a single day of driving. The less fuel stops the better. My Cummins equiped Ram 2500 could do the longer trips (1,000 to 1,100 miles) on 2 tanks of fuel (600 miles per tank).
the keypad isn't for "lost keys" its for locking the keys and other belongings inside the vehicle so you don't have to worry about them being stolen by leaving them unattended.
But thieves can get in anyways there's a reason why Ford's where I live are one of the most stolen vehicles that pad is wireless with a scanner I can get in that Ford easier than most especially if I wait for you to punch in that code 😎
Love my pickup - sure it is a compromise in nearly every way but at the same time so versatile. Shame we won't really get anything like this in the UK in a slightly smaller format. The Rivian I feel misses the mark in many respects for the core pickup market.
easy maths 1 mile = 1.6 kilometer 300 miles = 3* 160 km = 480 km kwh per 100 km is divide 1/1.6 = ~~0.62 (why some manufacturers give 0-62 mph time ? because it's 0-100 kmh). So when the car uses 40 kWh per 100 miles it's 24.8 kWh per 100 km 40*0,62 or anything * 0,62 same with kWh per mile
@@craigix but already happen in Canada and the rest of the world uses metric system mainly for speed and distance :) But conversion is so easy you don't need to give specific numbers. In UK you are filling up in liters or gallons ? The funniest thing is US gallon is different than UK gallon :D
Matt matt matt, do your research man. The keypad is not annoying, its for locking your key in the car when you go out to do something active or where you might get wet, damage, or lose your key. Its been a ford hallmark for a long time. Also the seat thing locks into place when you don’t pull it out all the way. And also Ford doesn’t give you bed covers because they want you to be able to choose the kind you like from any third party.
This truck is awesome if you live in the city, never tow and ignore the fact that the batteries and electricity to charge the thing are made/powered by .... Super reliable Fossil fuel 😅 environmental friendly ish? 😅
I love the keypads on Fords. I have the "hidden" kind on my Escape. When my girlfriend and I went to the beach, it was the best thing ever. We just went again in her car and she doesn't have a keypad. With thieves these days I don't leave stuff out of my reach so I couldn't go in the water. Keypad may be ugly on some models, but it is glorious.
As an American who owns a 2023 F150 Lighting (ext range, Lariat) I have to say I love it. I'm glad I bought mine. Though, the Rivian R1T is a good second choice truck. The way to look at the two is that F150 is a work and general purpose truck while the Rivian is an outdoorsy adventuring truck. Each is capable of doing what the other does in general, but are best at what they're meant to do.
Well you forgot the fact that it could tell you how much pay load you have in the back and automatically calculate what your range is going to be based on what you’re towing or what you loaded up. No it doesn’t have a cover on the bed like the Rivian but leaves and debris that go in when it’s being retracted never come back out so you know what you’re gonna have to do eventually. Try getting in and out of the Rivian Frunk and you’ll find out as you lift your cooler in and out of that Rivian Frunk how strong your back really isn’t. Unfortunately for Rivian, even though they drove it all over the place testing in their half shafts aren’t holding up and have to be reengineered. Cheers
for your info, the f150 is by no means, a gas guzzler, including the 5.0 V8. I can get 21MPG out of my 5.0, which is very respectable especially for a pickup.
It wins by default. And by 2025 we may possibly see a revised cybertruck announced to be launched in 2035 sooo we'll roll one of these f150's out then to FINALLY get the comparison review.
You can start the Mach E with a backup passcode on the center screen. I’m surprised Ford did not offer the same feature on the F 150 lightning. Unless your info is incorrect
It is stupid. Just put the gear selector on the dash or on the steering wheel. It only had to be located there to mechanically link with an ice tranmission. That entire centre area is wasted.
I'm convinced Ford has got the recipe right to try and gently convince truck owners that electric trucks are okay. Is it perfect? No. But, we've got to start somewhere.
EV trucks are useless for most and will always be unless they build chargers on sidewalks so the ppl who park on the roads can charge their trucks which I don't see happening
@@dor1tomcswagger69 Actually I think it's useless only for those who want to tow or have very heavy payloads. Most people that I know (me included) with trucks don't do either.
Thanks for testing the F150 on English narrow roads. As an American, we often wondered how it would do on those narrow roads you have over there. Have you heard the latest news on F150's? They are NOT selling because FORD raised the MSRP to over $80,000 USD and THAT disqualifies them, from the EV credit of $7500... S150 lightning costs the average buyer almost $20,000 more per truck! So FORD has recently (a few days ago) a PRICE CUT of $10,000 per Vehicle off the MSRP! So LARIAT Trim with EXT Battery is now about $78,000!!! And currently promises deliver in about 1 month instead of previous 3 year wait list - YAY!

@@purwantiallan5089 Bro why are you so against the F150 lightning. I've seen you under multiple comments against it. Chill out, there is clearly a market and need for it.
To be clear, the payload isn't just what you can carry in the bed. It's the whole darn lot. So that includes any accessories in the cabin, in addition to the driver, passengers and any fast food meals they have and haven't yet eaten.
I have a Cybertruck preorder in the first 10k orders, and intend on taking delivery of it (also drive a ‘21 model 3 performance), but I strongly believe that the F150 lightning is one of the most important EVs on sale. This will usher in many more new cars and trucks and may prove to be that tipping point that the market needs.
I feel like Ford could have done better with the lightning, more range, more towing capacity but at least in my perspective it’s all right, I don’t mind getting one Ford also is coming with a 2nd EV truck, and this truck will be build from the ground up electric, will it replace the lightning? Don’t know
No one wants these because of the mileage and charging restrictions and the tipping point needs to be towards freedom not towards electric slavery tied to a coal plant
Lol it looks so strange to me to see so few pickup trucks in the UK! I live in Texas and here it seems like more than half the vehicles on the road are trucks and almost all the rest are SUVs!
I think the lighting is neat but the range isnt good enough for where I live. I have a new f150 king ranch with the 3.5 tt v6 and I can get almost 720 miles out of 1 tank. I feel like if they could get 400 miles of range out of it i would consider a lighting
Dont be jealous. At least the average person in the states can afford a used pickup. Not a EV of course. In Europe most people have these little death traps because thats all they can afford. The wealthy there drive bigger safer cars. So thats ok right? A nice 12 cylinder diesel Q8 or twin turbo v8 german sedan of your choice, with one person in it. Thats ok right? I saw Escalades and Navigators and full size pickup trucks in Europe. The difference is only the wealthy can afford them there.
@@samspade8830 Unlikely that Lightnings will be used for anything other than personal vehicles. Maybe a contractor driving to job sites, but not anyone who needs to tow or haul for work. @@rich7447 I think it will be both. The towing capacity is 7700 lbs, so it can still haul, just not as well as a diesel engine, or regular combustion engine. For such a heavy vehicle, 40m stopping distance from 60mph is actually pretty impressive. Highway Code would have you believe that a 'normal' car would take 55m.
Pro move, and remember the battery problem would be appears at 6-8 years
@@WestCoastSupercarsandClassics Yeah it's priced ok on the website but if you go ahead and try to buy it, the dealer markup is horrendous.
I thought this was going to be a boring review. But turns out I now want one 😂
the keypad isn't for "lost keys" its for locking the keys and other belongings inside the vehicle so you don't have to worry about them being stolen by leaving them unattended.

Many test here in the US picked the F150. Rivin is more like a small truck than a full size.
Woud be helpfull if you had conversions to kwh per 100km and range in km
easy maths 1 mile = 1.6 kilometer 300 miles = 3* 160 km = 480 km
kwh per 100 km is divide 1/1.6 = ~~0.62 (why some manufacturers give 0-62 mph time ? because it's 0-100 kmh). So when the car uses 40 kWh per 100 miles it's 24.8 kWh per 100 km
40*0,62 or anything * 0,62 same with kWh per mile

Its been a ford hallmark for a long time. Also the seat thing locks into place when you don’t pull it out all the way.
Cheers

You can start the Mach E with a backup passcode on the center screen. I’m surprised Ford did not offer the same feature on the F 150 lightning. Unless your info is incorrect
The retractable gear shifter + table is on the regular F150 too :)
It is stupid. Just put the gear selector on the dash or on the steering wheel. It only had to be located there to mechanically link with an ice tranmission. That entire centre area is wasted.
AGREE with your verdict. Rivian is the way to go, especially with the short steering circle vs. the Ford. Both are great vehicles!
Just don't expect to tow anything very far.
The keypad is pretty useful.. We lock our keys in my buddy truck so we don't have to carry them and risk losing it while we're at a jobsite
This is a vehicle with keyless start, isn't it? If it is, couldn't the thief start it without phisically having the key?
@@deltajohnny No you still need the key with you for remote start to work, you can't drive the car if you remotely started the car using the key it's only for the aircon & heater to work.
This is intended to be a work truck so I doubt this vehicle will occupy just single passengers and no payload.
@@samspade8830 Unlikely that Lightnings will be used for anything other than personal vehicles. Maybe a contractor driving to job sites, but not anyone who needs to tow or haul for work. The Lightning doesn't have enough payload or towing capacity for anything serious. Work trucks usually start at F250 and go up from there.
@@rich7447 I think it will be both. The towing capacity is 7700 lbs, so it can still haul, just not as well as a diesel engine, or regular combustion engine. So, the F 150 Platinum is quite nice. In France it will always been a nightmare to drive this 3000 Kg Monster. In Europe, there is not enough nuclear plant and we cannot use electricity made from coal ( much more carbon , CO2 in the air) . Thank you MAT for this full test.
This is on the smaller end of what we consider full-size (due to 5.5 foot bed). We also have a class above this called "large pickups". This class would have trucks like the F250, F350 and F450 and it is treated differently for EPA regulations. This is a common fallacy.
So true. in some situations EVs make a lot of sense but I really want to remember that the production of Batteries also pollutes a lot and batteries often don't get recycled instead they get buried or burnd, which releases toxic gases. A lot of poor countries can't affoard the expansive recycling process for lythium batteries.
oil companies and some automakers worked hard to convince you that's the argument. And they succeeded
@@USUG0 Maybe, but there is alos some truth behinde it. Electric cars also pollute and depending on the production of the car and the electricity it can be worse than with a small petrol car but a Truck never is environmental friendly, no matter if it runs on gas or electricity.
I’m almost positive the PRO will be the volume seller, the price jump to the other trims is crazy.
