The pacing on all of the Sherlock Holmes movies is brilliantly paced....never forced and always relaxed and the dialogue spoken is eloquent with so many well chosen phrases being articulated by the great Basil Rathbone.

Sherlock Holmes movies are some of my favorites ever - especially the ones starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce!! I grew up in the '50s and became a big fan then. It's refreshing to be reminded of what good acting is and that a movie can be wonderfully entertaining without sex, foul language, nudity and all of the other rot that has negatively impacted society all over the world.

The storyline keeps the viewer engaged. When you have really good writers, that helps. Without really good writing, then it's like the other Sherlock Holmes, which in my opinion are flat.

It might be a tv version, but Jeremy Brett is undoubtedly the Holmes to compare with. He only did the Conan Doyle stories, and he did all of them. Brilliantly. Rathbone did very few original stories, which were Americanised, including the use of lots of guns. Not to mention the regular use of the term ‘scotch’ when referring to Scots. They are entertaining films, which I always enjoy, just not very true to Conan Doyle’s intentions.

I've seen all the Rathbone/Bruce Sherlock Holmes movies, and it always makes me smile when Rathbone "plays" the violin. He makes no attempt at all to make it look real. And speaking of continuity errors: the owner of the gift shop is not wearing nail polish, but in the closeup of her holding Holmes' card her nails are polished. Love these movies.

Rathbone had a great sense of fun,and was not too snooty to allow himself to be taken less serious-he made 2 appearances on the Spike Jones Spotlight review radio shows around 1948 as Spike served up his usual zany but hysterically-funny comedy with his musical depreciational pals egging him on-Sir Fredrick Gas,Doodles Weaver,Georgie etc..

Watson wasn't a bumbling fool like made out by Bruce, he was a very capable former military man who could take care of himself and Holmes too for that matter. Nigel Bruce was a very good actor its just his portrayal of Watson that I didn't like.

@@patrickholland6848 I agree with your assessment of the Dr. Watson portrayal in these movies with Rathbone and Bruce. I have seen your term "bumbling fool" and also "buffoon" used over & over to describe this portrayal of Dr. Watson. I think Rathbone did an outstanding job with Holmes and better than all others...except Jeremy Brett. But I have a hard time watching these movies with Rathbone & Bruce precisely because of the Watson portrayal...it diminishes greatly what Rathbone brings to the role of Holmes. Now I really , really like the Dr. Watson character in the movies with Jeremy Brett...smart, capable, can keep his mouth shut when he needs to...a very good partner to Holmes.

This final movie featuring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce is definitely one of the best written and most suspenseful in the series, and Patricia Morison makes an excellent villainess. I recognize the police commissioner, whose name was Ian Wolfe, from a couple other Sherlock Holmes movies. There were in fact several actors who played multiple roles in the series, but I doubt that too many of the public viewers caught on to the fact that quite a few of the actors were being recycled in different roles.

You know, I really think this may be the highest quality Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes film. It works in references to Holmes' canonical adventures, showcases Watson's writing skill (through it's effect on others, if not by actually showing it), has some very touching moments between Holmes and Watson, has reasonably clever villains with an original enough plot, and on the side of the heroes this film really exudes the warmth that came to characterize The Baker Street Dozen in a different way than many of the numerous other portrayals of the detective and company.

Not quite the highest quality film in the series. Dressed To Kill is actually the second iteration of the original ACD story "The Six Napoleons". The first one was 1944's The Pearl Of Death, which, in my view, was closer to the original and a bit better, both for the tension level and one of the few times Holmes gets tripped up by his own ego -which his antagonist takes advantage of twice. But this one was an upswing from the very cheap and unimaginative Terror By Night, does indeed feature some of the best character scenes between Rathbone and Bruce, and was a better movie for the series to go out on than its immediate predecessor film.
