Best Lead For Your English Springer Spaniel

- Jackie Glunning and her English Springer spaniel, Dolly, share their experience of what works - and what - when it comes to exercising an English Springer Spaniel.
English Springers were first bred as hunting dogs, used to ‘spring’ or flush game birds into the air, allowing trained falcons or hawks to bring the prey to its handler. They are known for their many field skills, and also their affectionate and lively temperaments.
Springers have an excellent sense of smell, and one of the problems many owners find when they begin walking their Springer puppy is that it will pull on the lead, eager to follow the intriguing scents that its keen nose will find.
Jackie shares how she began walking Dolly on an extendable lead, but has come to believe that this type of lead was probably the worst choice for her dog. She demonstrates how an extendable lead gives Dolly free rein to pull and go off the path. Dolly also struggled with leads that involved a muzzle - and suffered two bouts of conjunctivitis trying to paw off a muzzle.
The preferred option for Jackie now is the Mekuti dog harness. She also demonstrates how this harness works, and how to get your dog and in and out of it. The Mekuit harness and double-ended lead is often recommended by trainers as a force-free way to help with training and reduce pulling. Having double-sided control offers a much more effective means of stopping the animal from darting off, but without pulling on the neck or restricting the muzzle.
Walking your dog can be enjoyable time for you both, rather than a battle for control. Watch this clip to hear Jackie’s experience on how she managed to make that transition.
One of the best aspects of the breed is that once you have a relationship with your dog is that they are easy to walk off leash. They like to walk in front of you. We're on our third spaniel and this seems to hold true.
Great advice, thank you 😊
That second leash arrangement uses what I call Dog-Jitsu, in that the front/chest clip uses the dogs own inertia to defeat a lunge/pull forward, by turning the dog.
Thanks for taking the time to put together these videos about your spaniel, about to get my first and can use all the info I can get!
That's great to hear Peter! We are making more Dolly videos soon, covering care of ears, and tips on getting through a ligament operation with a Springer.
We used a harness on our first ESS Emma primarily by using a seat belt to keep her off the drivers lap while on a road trip. She could still pull very hard so we used a halter on her nose. On trips through the woods she ran off lead ands had no truble finding us.
She sounds like a very smart dog :)
Awesome video! My springer is lead trained but I dog sit for friends and can no longer have my arms tugged on due to an injury. I look forward to trying the harness you've shown here. Thank you!!!
So pleased to hear that Renee! Will pass your comment on to Jackie - we know she'll be delighted to here it's been helpful to you. Let us know how you get on!
This was really helpful. I've never heard of a Mekuti harness before...looks wonderful. I hope I can find it in the US, if not, I will order from the UK. Thank you!
I have a Ruffwear Webmaster harness for my Springer Spaniel. We do a lot of hillwalking and the handle on top of the harness is great for lifting him over fences.
thank you for your helpful feedback Ryan!
Definitely the best harness on the market. Ruffwear is not cheap but you get what you pay for I guess.
I also have a Springer Spaniel that I use for hunting. Not only do I have the pulling and following his nose issue but he also wants to be 25 yards in front of me flushing birds and NOT on a leash. I'm going to try this harness. Thanks for the video.
Sorry about the delayed response Jen - just saw this. How did you get on?
Works like a charm! The look on his face when he realized the jig is up was priceless. My back is no longer pulled out of alignment each morning....it's a pleasure to walk him. Thanks to you and Dolly for the video!
+Jen Jen that's such great news! We'll pass it on to Jackie. Thanks so much for letting us know 😍
This is very good information, I use this too. My dog trainer mentioned “Dogmatic Head Collar” that may be one of other options too.
Thanks for sharing!
In my childhood my dad bought for his hunting hobby a Wahtelhund dog (Hugo:), looked pretty much like Springer Spaniel. I have many funny stories about him. Hugo was also attracted with all smells: he had no respect to non-family members, so all his dog walkers visited all garbages on their way to the park:D It was really funny to us and big entertainment for the dog:D Regards from Poland.
Sorry about the delayed response Anna, just saw this. Thanks for the anecdote about Hugo, he sounds delightful! will pass your comment on to Jackie.
What a wonderful dog Hugo sounds!
I had a Springer that would pull very hard on a collar to the point of choking itself, putting them in a normal harness clipped on the back, they completely stopped pulling and was easy to correct if they start. It was weird quirk of that dog and to a lesser extent his brother, it still doesn't make sense to me.
Me neither Robert - I'll ask Jackie what she thinks
Hello, can you spell the name of the harness on show please as I'm struggling to find it in a shop
Hello, it is the Mekuti dog harness.
Do you know were I could buy 1 from ?
Hello kingkenny1981, have a look at mekuti.co.uk
Yes my Springer hates the muzzle of the "gentle leaders!"
Where can i find this online. Please. Hope someone can reply to this. Thanks
Hi Melissa, try mekuti.co.uk
Dolly's a good girl.
Spaniel walks very nice on the lead And flexible. But if she dose pick a sent up. I swap it for a normal lead until the sent has gone.. Then put her back on the other one.
I had question hope you can answer for me since you're in the UK 🇬🇧. How good of product is catac products working dog harness?
"I am wanting some for my spaniels."

@@LifeTheBasicManual okay. Thank you for your reply. I am wondering about a different product
I have had 2 Springers now and donot own a leash, my dog goes where i go 24/7. My groomer is still shocked as I never take him there with a leash. Train your dog and this problem goes away
Sounds like you've done a great job Ray!
@Norseman Honey. you should post your own vids to show people how easy it is to train them.
@@robertt9342 i have only 2 rules rule one - must come when called rule 2 - must stay around me
EXCATLY!!! Harnesses are a waste of time and money. This doesn't even come close to fixing the pulling problem.
Sliplead and teach lead pressure👍
As a pet dog trainer for 40+ years, I can tell you that it is impossible to train most owners to train their dogs. Sad, but true. The option is to have dogs pull their owners to the ground. I will evaluate almost any option that will allow a handler to enjoy walking their dog without endangering the dog or the handler. I applaud you for being great trainers, but believe me, you are in the minority!
Grat vid were can i get two of them from.
maybe google local breeders?
How do you spell the name of this harness please
Its Mekuti Melanie - more description of it in the writing under the video :)
Tape flexible leads are better then the cord.
Normal training with a normal lead could get him off the pulling
I have three cocker spaniel
They're a great breed!
See your dog is pulling meaning it thinks its the boss, needs nipping in the bud from the start.
I have a very similar review video! you should check it out
just use a normal hunting slip leash, the rest is training...
Try a slip lead every time the dog try's to pull / get in front stop the dog will Learn that it's not getting anywhere and not in control so will start walking to heal
Also as a hunting dog they will walk with there nose to the ground it's one of the thing they will just do
I'm with you. I've got a working cocker spaniel. He pulls like crazy on a regular lead on the slip lead he doesn't.
I’ve had two Welsh Springers which were major pullers, I tried a slip collar on both and just meant they spent the whole time strangling themselves.
&
Its called a huner lead . And not made 2 be used like that
You should learn her to walk next to you without pulling ...
I can get him walking on a slip lead in 5 minutes to heal
How? This sounds like a good solution.
Scott Carter by making it fun to be with you and you can get the best out of any dog
