- Due to some weird comments, I feel the need to point out that this is my OWN dog, and she was middle aged in this video and I had probably groomed her 500 times in her life since she was a show dog. I am NOT "rough" with her - I am matter of factly going about grooming her while I narrate what I am doing for the video. She is not scared or stressed - for heaven's sake she is falling asleep!

Thank you - I lost this sweet girl almost a year ago, she was 13 1/2. I still think about her all the time...
I am so sorry for your lost. My girl passed away 4 years ago at the age of 15. I still miss her every day. I was a groomer for a while and loved the springers I had for clients , so I got her. She was the best dog I've ever had. Spaniels are so sensitive, intelligent. Only recently can I think about her for more then a few minutes without crying. I can think about her an smile now, remembering her specialness and love. I pray that time will heal your sorrow and replace it with smiles.

After having Springers for close to 40 years I did my first ever Springer grooming today, thanks to your *terrific* videos. You just made it look so darned easy that I had to give it a try and, if I do say so myself, I did very nice job for my first time out. Blending out into the face and around the eyes, over the cheek bones was the hardest part for me. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your expertise!
she is so pretty... My Springer is also gorgeous lol I get so many people stopping me to see him.. They are just wonderful dogs.. at least mine is..

I think you do a great job! I like to begin with the inside of the ears and then do the face to avoid clipper burn. I find that doing the most sensitive areas first saves time because I don't have to change blades as often. Your model is very well behaved. It's evident that she has complete trust in you. Well done!
I am a scissoraholic and like to try many different scissors! My long term favorites are Roseline shears. They are sharp and well balanced and reasonably priced. You can get them from several online stores. I use short 5" Roselines for the feet, and 7" ones for other areas, but you could just get one or the other. For thinning shears I love my Kenchii 5 Stars. Roseline probably makes thinners too, I just haven't tried them.
You've done a beautiful job, very thorough. I can't wait to watch the other two parts.
Your Springer looks just like my first ESS. The blaze, facial expressions, ear attachment and everything! IMHO, black and whites just look more dramatic than liver and whites.
Don't worry about the snide comments: some people cruise UA-cam specifically looking for things they can complain about.
Terrific videos. What helped me the most was seeing what an ESS really looks like on video. We have a "pound" dog that we were told was a spaniel mix. We've looked at various photos, but now looking at your dog I realize that she has to be a ESS--same coloring and also the same calm disposition. I don't know whether I will be brave enough to try to trim her but if I do, I will surely have all I need to know to do it. Our Violet is the most wonderful dog I've ever had. I'm glad to be as sure as I can be of her breed because I certainly would want to get an ESS again.

Thank you so much for your reply. I use a coat king on him regularly and trim the rest by hand with scissors (very time consuming when I haven't the chance to get him to a groomers-there aren't any near me!)

Great videos. I have been grooming my own ESSs for a couple of years myself but I've been afraid to clipper their backs. I have only been using the 10 blade on their neck and head and I've tried to strip their coat but they are a hairy mess. I just don't the time but these videos have been so helpful. I am buying the 8.5, 5F and 4F to try out everything you showed with the neck and back. I'll post back with how things went. BTW...I love your dog...so cute.
Very impressive! I have never done a thing to groom my dog and wish we had because she may not have the temperment now. The video was great and hepful. We have had plenty of ear problems and this may definately help. If you have any general suggestions feel free.
Wonderful instructional videos on English Springer Spaniel grooming... well done indeed! I watched them to refresh my knowledge of grooming as it has been 25+ plus years since I worked as a professional groomer. Can you please tell what type of cordless clipper you use in these videos? I am now looking to purchase a cordless clipper and would like to hear a recommendation from someone in the know these days. Thank you so much!

Your two videos are by far the best ESS grooming videos on youtube. I will be getting my puppy in a few weeks and I definately want to learn to groom him myself to save on cost and keep him looking his best all the time. Do you wrap the ears also to get them straighter? I've seen some ESS's with very curly ears and wanted to know what you do about that?
I have an Edemco force box dryer, specifically made for drying dogs. It has hoses and you can attach it onto a crate or cage to dry the dog, or you can use a nozzle attachment and dry them by hand.

I have an English Cocker Spaniel, but as she is the working dog type she looks like a mini springer with the lighter bone structure. She is not for showing but I would love to use your tips on her as she would be even more beautiful.
Roxie's colour is called liver but really she is chocolate with a roan chest and dusty nose. Interested in your coat king though. The stripper I used on her has left her a fluffy back!

Could I ask a (perhaps stupid) question?
I have a 4 year old Springer boy and I have never let the groomer trim him with clippers as I was told that his smooth soft flat coat will grow back coarse and curly. Is that true?
@TheMnkrause Thank you for your nice comment! It is just so funny, I made these years ago to send home with people getting puppies from me. Recently I posted them for a friend whose DVD wasn't working anymore. Never thought other people would see them! Glad they helped.
Thanks @schites10 ! There are actually three videos :-) The best way to straighten the ears is to blow dry them completely after the bath. Just use a regular hairdryer and brush the hair down flat while you dry it. A human hair straightening product helps too. We do wrap the ears in "Vetrap" when we are showing the dogs, but this is just to keep them straight after we blow dry them and are waiting to go in the ring. It would not be practical or safe to leave them like that any other time.
I suppose you are right lol...I am still trying to find my own "way" with show grooming my guys...your video did help me alot with ear clipping though...I just finished our young dogs clipper work and his ears look WAY better then they usually do. I couldn't quite figure out what was off about them, I just think I was too freaked out to take the shaved part down too far. I took them down alot further then usual and they look great now!! :) thanks so much for your help :P
Follow-up question. You mentioned the Oster Turbo clipper and I ordered it (coming tomorrow along with the Mars Coat King!) but I just realized it's not cordless like the one you are using in the Part 1 video. What clipper are you using and do you recommend the cordless over the Oster Turbo? Thanks again. Connie
I'm attempting to reply to you, Betty Gauthier, but UA-cam no longer has a "reply" link after the comments, nor can I figure out a way to reply to your private message. So hopefully you'll see this: The clippers used in the video are Andis AGR+ cordless/corded convertible clippers. They worked great for many years, but then started refusing to hold a charge, even after I bought new batteries. These days I use a pair of Oster Volt cordless clippers, and I LOVE them! Got them on Amazon for (by far) the best price I found on the internet...

+Connie Ryan Alesse - I actually made this video a million years ago for some of my puppy people, and I don't use much of the equipment in it anymore! My current clipper is an Oster, but it is the cordless Volt model. In the video I think I am using my cordless Andis clippers, which were good clippers but I could not stand the battery issues I had with them. The Oster Volts have amazing batteries, I have not had any trouble with them. I've heard that the newer Andis ProClip Pulse Ion cordless clippers have the better battery in them like the Volt, but don't cost as much.
I think the type I have would work for most Springer coats - it is the 20 tooth model. Could try the 16 tooth model if you think your dog's hair is pretty coarse. I would not go finer than 20 teeth, I don't think it would do much.
For corded clippers I like all of the Andis models. If you want to splurge and get cordless clippers I love the new Oster Volts!
Thanks for the video. Do any of you have problems with sebaceous cysts on your English Springers? Is this a known issue or is it just my dog? Is there anything you can do to help prevent the cysts?
I can't remember when I made these, Arielle was probably about 8 or so... it was many years ago! She lived to be 14 and passed away in 2011.
I use a slicker brush, a pin brush and a bristle brush on my dogs, you'd probably find a soft slicker to be the most useful.
Ariel is beautiful, how old is she? My boyfriend and I have bought a ESS puppy and he will be coming home on 16th July, we are so excited! What type of brushes will we need for grooming?

Yes. I accidentally did that a few months ago. Felt just awful!. Now he doesn't trust me when he sees scissors, so this should be an adventure...lol.Yes they are such wonderful dogs. It's so hard to think about Dotson without misting up. We have no kids so he was our baby.
Also do you have a show grooming video for springers as well??

I wish mine was that calm when trying to use the clipper... I can't do the head and mouth at all by myself. But he copes with a stranger doing it... same thing with his nails!

What shampoo, conditioner, and spray do you use? My Springer has seasonal dandruff so I want to use something that will be good for his coat and skin and makes him super soft.
+Leeza Turcotte - Oh, I switch up what I use all the time :-) I like Kelco's Dr. Hypo shampoo for a mild, general purpose shampoo. It makes them soft and shiny. I use a little known line called PSH - Pet's Show Hairdresser, they have some great rinses and conditioning masks. A lot of people love the Isle of Dogs products, and I do like them too, but they are very strongly scented, which is a problem for some people and dogs. Their Oil of Evening Primrose shampoo is great for dandruff and is not strongly scented. There is also also a shampoo called Kenic Emu Oil that is great on flaky skin. I do a vinegar rinse after bathing also. Like 1/2 cup vinegar in 1/2 a gallon or so of water, don't rinse.

Great video! I am getting a springer spaniel puppy soon and I was wondering what would be the best brushes or any grooming tools to get for him while he's growing up to keep him looking good. His dad seems to have fairly wavy to curly hair...and he seems to as well
Heather Harmon The three brushes I use are a boar bristle brush, a pin brush and a soft slicker. For everyday maintenance a SOFT slicker would be your best bet. Not one of those giant stiff ones for dematting a Great Pyrenees, lol, but a soft one that will get through the hair but be easy on the skin. I also think a Coat King (shown in the video) is a great way to keep the undercoat down. To minimize curl/wave on the back you want to always dry the dog with a towel or after bath robe on them. Blow drying the ear and feathers instead of air drying will make a big difference also.
Hey, I'm a dog walker and walk lots of springers and I have a young one myself. I've always shaved her short and so do my clients to keep these easy to clean but am now letting her fur grow. Can I let it grow full length and just mainting it by regular brushing and keep it at that?
Do you mean you want to let the entire dog grow out and not trim anywhere, or are you just meaning you want to know if the feathering/furnishings will grow out okay?

In general you could do that, although I think trimming certain areas is necessary for good health. I would say to be sure and shave the insides of the ears to help prevent ear problems, shave the lip fold area to prevent infections there, and keep the feet trimmed to prevent the dog from picking up all kinds of debris and so you can see to keep the nails nice and short. I personally think they get kind of woolly looking without having some trimming, but it depends on how much hair the dog grows. A field bred Springer, for example, might never need to have much of a hair cut. Once you have shaved a Springer's coat it tends to grow back really fuzzy. It can take a long time but you might be able to get it back to a normal texture, especially on a black and white. The liver coats tend to never be normal again if they've been shaved down multiple times.

No, everyone has such strong opinions on show grooming, I figure I'd have a dozen people telling me how I'm doing it wrong, lol! Plus, I'm an adequate show groomer, but not good enough that I should be teaching anyone!
Laura Monaghan - I'm trying to reply to you, but UA-cam no longer has a reply button...so annoying! If you shave the back it will change the texture, especially on a liver Springer. The shorter you clip it, the more it will change the texture. In my experience it comes back much softer and fluffier, and is often a lighter color. It can be curlier too. While we are showing a dog we never trim the top (back) coat with clippers, but of course you have to shave the throat, tops of the ears, head, etc. The rest of the coat is thinned with thinning shears or hand stripped. This is very time consuming, so usually once a dog is finished being shown we will trim the topcoat with a longer blade like a 5F to mimic the look of show grooming with minimal impact on the coat. I would never shave a Springer's back with anything shorter, unless you are committing to keeping them very short forever and don't mind the appearance of the coat changing.
I LOVE your vids. I want to do our 4 yr old ESS. He is getting pretty shaggy. He does have some matts behind the ears. What do you recommend as far as trimming that stuff off? I am so sorry to read you lost this dog. I know the feeling. I had to put our 12 1/2 yr old ESS Dotson down before we got this one. He had cancer. I still tear up over that. Miss him terribly. Cooper is our new dog.and he is just as spoiled rotten but he needs the cut..lol. Is it really ok to cut the wiskers?
I would clip any matts behind the ears out with a 10 blade, too easy to cut the dog with scissors there! Clipping the whiskers doesn't hurt a thing, but it is just personal preference, a lot of pet groomers leave them. Sorry about your Dotson, it is hard to lose these wonderful dogs.
