Slip lead, tree method. Throw a ball once to a park or in the backyard for a few before leaving, a firm still knee helps let them jump into hard things if they jump at you. My dog only sits through physical touch or a very firm commands. No freaking out when he be jumps. You must train you family and friends to be calm and talk gestures. If they can’t do that get new friends, real friends listen to you when you are training your dog. Let them wear themselves out. I don’t care what some people say, some dogs only respect authority or a physical activity prevents them from doing a behavior, not all but some dogs.

Just stay in one spot until he calms down and he will eventually sit. You have to be extremely patient with dogs. Then award him for sitting and wait until he’s calm again repeat this process and then start the leash training. There’s steps to take. First teaching dog to sit on command is the BEST command to learn. It’s basically tells the dog listen and observe

I love it when you see a dog learning something in just a few minutes and keeping up the routine makes life so much easier. Yet some of us took on a rescue dog. We get frustrated and upset with the dog and start looking through training videos trying to find the one that works. Then you realise what you really took on with the rescue dog. For example, I have two rescue dogs, and walks on leash are painful. One dog walks incredibly slow and the other believes he's in a sled dog race. I say heel and the slower dog goes even slower. How slow, I'll explain. We get in the gate of the dog park, do two laps and the slow dog is only just ready to stop sniffing, pissing, eating grass and ready to head off. It's mortally painful. Both dogs won't change, they modify but stay the same. Corrections sometimes make the dogs worse, especially if they are new and have been bullied by humans.

    • @interdimensionalsteve8172
      @interdimensionalsteve8172 3 роки тому +20

@@Nerdperior It takes longer, but every time they pull, stop dead and hold it. Do a little tug and try to get their attention and/or get them to come back to stand near you and wonder wtf you're doing. The key is then when you start walking again, do so with BIG praise and even a treat. Or do the back and forth trick where you walk one way and the second they pull you stop, turn and walk the other way. Do this back and forth for twenty minutes if you have to, but the key is getting them used to you being in control of when to turn and how. The hardest part is having them look to you for guidance.

edit: by the way i was enjoying the video & the points that were being made. I really feel like I learned something when they were talking about the collars & which one to use in how to put it on your dog. I think what got me was when the guy was talking about not having tension in the leash and all I can think about is a dog pulling like it’s life depends on it and it’s owner who watched this video wishing their dog could just sit their lol

He's very friendly and I am only just able to get him to stop jumping on people but it is consistent training. He will be good for 1 or 2 days then the next day of training he's a wild animal who is strong willed and very frustrating.
I've had 7 dogs over the last 25 years, and I've never had a dog so strong willed and stubborn and I've already spent a fortune on lessons and tools to get him trained and so far nothing is working.
My last resort is the Gentle Leader, but at this point I am not feeling confident it will work.

Place their collar high up behind their ears and they will stop pulling. I've done this with all over a hundred dogs and it's worked every single time.

I hope these work... I have been working with dogs my entire life and have had the blessing to have many companions.
Currently we have 5 large dogs sharing our home and 3 are Irish Wolfhounds (of which we breed).
I am a software expert but count myself a fair dog trainer...but, I have failed!
    They are all great...
...save for my spoiled puppy Remus (the one we kept of the last liter 18 months ago) who is 130 pounds of unmanageability.
I absolutely love him so much and let him get away with too much :(
Today he pulled me over and down the sidewalk to get to another dog and I have had enough.
    I will try these tips.
    He was wearing a harness

Mine doesn’t care is she’s literally dying of being choked so bad when she pulls, we tried everything… stops and wait until she relaxes (she doesn’t), turns another direction(she just changes the direction she pulls), pull back in pauses, etc. She is DEAF when she’s outside of the house, so no command works😅

Hi thank you for your video. My question is at what age can you start using a gentle leader? Helping my friend work with his puppy who is three months old. Working on walking in the hall and places without distraction he does great then as soon as we go outside he doesn’t care about treats at all doesn’t wanna eat anything doesn’t care about toys he just wants to pull and smell everywhere. And doesn’t focus. I know practice and repetition is the key. But right now he is pulling all the time. Do you suggest a gentle leader for this young age?

Loose leash walking remains my biggest frustration with my 8 month-old Golden Retriever. I attended a class with her, and this was touched on, and distracting her with a high-reward treat (offering it close to my right hip while turning her away from the distraction). The problem is I’m not even able to advance beyond my back yard, because it doesn’t matter what reward I offer her, ie steak, hot dogs, cheese, etc, it’s not enough of an incentive to cause her to turn away from the leaf, twig, piece of grass, et al, and come to me. When I offer the high value reward, she won’t eat it. The most I can get is a big yawn or she’ll stop, sit down, and scratch herself. Even if I can get her to take the reward in her mouth, she immediately spits it out. Any advice from anyone that’s overcome a similar issue would be greatly appreciated! T, ia😊

Lol, I just have to say my 5 month old lab is the same, angel inside, outside she eats everything under the sun, sometimes will eat treats but 100% stress. She'll run ahead of me but the second I slow down she'll sidetrack to eating something, then have a temper tantrum if I try to get her to go and will just lay there.

My last dog, bless her soul, she was so so sweet but she was dog aggressive and so we were limited on when and where we could go during the day. Well, my lab pulls me like crazy and she’s just as strong as my last dog. She even pulls with the gentle leader on. Hope to get this sorted. I want to be able to enjoy nice walks

But no, she pulls like crazy and she is really strong. I weigh 170 lbs and she pulls me easily if I let her. So I can only imagine how strong she really is. Gonna try the new adjustable, metal buckled collar and work with her and see what happens. Thanks.

What if you have an extra small breed puppy? I have a 7 month 'teacup' pomeranian and theres no way she can safely wear a collar as she chokes herself without stopping, and as im sure ypu know small dogs are prone to tracheal collapse, so she wears a harness. She pulls non stop from the moment we get out of the door, doing the bunny hop and trying desperately to run! I've tried doing the stop, wait for slack but as soon as we go again shes pulling like crazy, ive also tried doing the double tap tug on the lead- she doesnt care just keeps pulling.... What do I do?

you stop don't move until the leash is a lil lose then you go and change directions - its a slow process should only be done a few minutes at at time and somewhere you have ample space to change directions and speeds, keep the pups guessing which way your going to go.

My dog is a 10 months old Samoyed. He is TERRIBLE on walks. I have tried about everything at this point, watched and followed the guideline of 30+ humane training videos and I have been patient. The Gentle Leader seemed like it was helping but he realized that when he stops and pulls back, he can get the nose part off. Then, it's game over because he is stronger than I am and he drags me onto the concrete and could very well jump on a kid one day and hurt them badly. He also made me trip and pulled me in the middle of crossing a boulevard.
I was also attacked verbally multiple times by KARENS because they think I am using a muzzle.
Today, I decided to go in the backyard, on the other side of the fence, just to play with him and spend his energy before training. I did not use the gentle leader then. When he saw a dog walk by, I thought it was a good opportunity to teach him to remain calm. I asked him to sit. He did. I asked him to stay. He did... for 3 seconds before charging at them. F*** the treats. He does not care about them. He just wants love and attention. He is way too social for my own good. Right now I am writing with one hand because he almost broke my wrist by pulling the leash to get to the other dog. I'm icing it and waiting to see if I need to go to the hospital. It can't continue like this. He needs to learn.
    So here it is:
    1. A regular chain choker collar doesn't work and I don't want to hurt him either.
    2. A collar like the red one and metal loop doesn't work either.
    3. Gentle Leader worked a bit but he whines, stops walking, pulls back, takes it off and also spends his time trying to take it off with his paws. Strangers scream at me and call me names because they think in their little bird brain it's a muzzle.
    4. The dog is stronger than I am. I have a back injury that won't ever heal sadly, and I can't hold him without serious aggravation.
    6. I play fetch and spend his energy before training.
    5. I try to train him to pay attention to me. I try to train him to understand the stay command. I try to train him to greet people calmly. I try to train him to not jump on people... He does not respond.
    6. He does NOT care about treats. No matter what kind.
What else can I do? Don't tell me to get rid of my dog. I will not.
