This happened to my most beloved record... I was playing The Pale Empreror's Deluxe Vinyl Edition, which I found after some months of trying to get a mint copy of it. So I went home and decided to play it, placed the rercord, took all dust away from it, and I was about to drop the needle when my mom walked into my room in a hurry and accidentally hit the desk, which made me freak out and drop the needle on the record at 2-2,5 centimiters away from it... I just stood there as the music started playing, and decided to drop the needle on the 1st track, one I got to track 2, y hear this loud af pop, that was continuously repeating itself over and over again... That is my favourite record ever, pressed on gorgeous 180g white vinyl, just getting absolutely wrecked... I was dead inside for 2 or 3 hours after that.

    “Track three was kaputt.”😅
I’m very pleased to hear German words in an English sentence, very nice.
Ja, fortunately most of the superficial scratches are barely audible, but your misfortune is deeply shocking! Sometimes it’s better to have an automatic turntable additionally, as you are with friends and can’t handle your records with care as you normally would do.
    Greetings from 🇩🇪

    • @taida8511
      @taida8511 Рік тому

German here as well. I just recently learned that "kaputt" is actually more common in the English language than you might be aware of.
Sure it's not used as frequently as words like "broken" or "damaged" but I have heard it being used in English sentences quite a few times now.
It seems like "kaputt" is used as a more comedic replacement for the other more common synonymes. And I also believe that it is used if something is very badly damaged. Like even more than "wrecked" or "destroyed".
I was just as surprised the first time I've heard it.

  • @gabriel38g

Modern turntables usually come with a 'locking clip' to hold the tone-arm in place. It's good practice to get in the habit of always using the clip every time you want to flip or change a record and only open it when you're ready to put the needle down to play. Cue-up levers can be fixed/adjusted. There's usually a screw in the middle of the banana-shaped thing under the tone arm that you can adjust to where you like it.

Sorry to hear about your loss, but glad you could get a replacement! I'm sure it was a horrifying moment. When I set up my current turntable (Pro-ject Debut Carbon, about 7 years ago), I didn't set the tracking force right, and when I played (possibly New Order's True Faith 12" single) the first beat on the album sent the arm up into the air, luckily I was right there and managed to stop it from coming down hard on the surface, so no damage done..(whew)....I was sweating it for a moment until I realized I hadn't set the downward force...lesson learned.
One other horror story everyone should be aware of, I recently picked up a copy of Depeche Mode's Violator, new in shrink from a local store. Beautiful copy, but there was a ugly vinyl burr from the spindle punch out that came loose in the sleeve, and it put an ugly scratch down the entire side 1. The store had no replacements in store or in their warehouse. Luckily it only pops in a couple of spots on one song (and Rhino has been nice enough to tell me that they will look for a replacement for me). But lesson learned : always check your record sleeves!

Wow Jarrett, I really feel for you, I bet that was a shock seeing that happen to your record. I think we've all done something like that at some point. That's why I use an automatic turntable now. But even a couple of those can have issues when dropping the needle. I once had a turntable, can't remember what make it was, that when the tonearm went to beginning of the record, it would drop down onto the record so fast the needle sometimes jumped right across the lead in grooves into the first track, thus missing a few seconds of the music. It was a right pain and just really bugged me. Needless to say I didn't have that record player very long.

I had all their music digitally but I couldn’t find them on vinyl ANYWHERE and I was so pleased to find out they were selling their album on vinyl at their merch table and I even managed to get the whole band to sign the cover for me. It was really late when I got home so I didn’t get to play it until the next day. I pop it on the turn table, drop the needle, aaaaaand it immediately starts skipping. I was so devastated. I still cherish the album cause it is a banger start to finish (seriously all killer no filler check it out) and it’s signed by the whole band but I haven’t been able to replace it since.

I bought a brand new copy of The Beatles Abbey Road......the VERY FIRST TIME I went to play it I accidentally dropped my record weight on the vinyl putting a HUGE divot in it!! I was crushed but like you....jumped right on Amazon and spent ANOTHER 25 bucks for another copy!! Lesson learned!!

Here’s my story. So my mum knew that I really wanted a turntable, and saved up to buy me my first record player, which was a really good, brand new AT-LP7. I fell in love with it. Unfortunately a couple months later I clumsily dropped the dust cover onto the tone arm, which caused the tone arm to skim over the platter, damaging the stylus, and creating multiple chips in the smooth matte black surface of the turn table base. I was so gutted, that I couldn’t look at my turntable for a month. To this day, every time I spin a record I beat myself up about it. But I eventually moved on, and I regained my love for it. Now every time I move the dust cover I’m extremely cautious. Well I guess I learnt my lesson, and will never make that mistake again!

Happened to me too and it's electrifying thru your nerves during that seconds of a moment. Compose yourself, take a deep breath, and perform the whole ritual calmly. You'll hear the songs anyway no matter how slow the process is.

I bought The Cure's Entreat live 4 disc set a while back. On the very first play, in an effort to not touch the groves, I ended up dropping disc C, which hit the corner of the speaker, carving a huge scratch. Happens to all of us once.

I had the same deer in headlights feeling just the other day. I just got a new turntable, leveled the tonearm and calibrated the stylus. I had also built this thing to go over my TT so that it's fully protected from my cats. At this time, my cats were pretty hyper and running around so, just as you were, I was in a hurry. I always use the antistatic brush before playing so I move the tonearm over the record not realizing I hadn't lifted the cue-up. So I moved it over dropping it right onto the record and it bounced twice. Just "Pop" "Pop" right out of the speakers. I felt my stomach drop.
THANKFULLY my record is fine! And the new set-up sounds great. But not a noise I ever want to hear again lol I was supposed to be relaxed listening to some Bill Evans but ended up anxious the whole time hoping there was no damage.
So yeah, seriously don't be in a rush with records!

  • @IceblinkWatersky

I find when I use the cueing lever on my Rega RP-1, the tonearm always drifts off from where I placed it as it lowers. It's literally just so much easier to be careful and precise doing it manually. I still use it for taking the needle off again.
Nothing disastrous has happened yet. My worse mishap was when I dropped an inexpensive, very common 90s house 12" and it bounced against the sharp corner of the table my turntable was sat on. A similarly painful experience, and left some noticeable marks, but absolutely no damage to the audio. I'm just very lucky I guess.

Vinyl eyezz I would definitely try to either fix or replace the lever you have cause when I started out using turntables I put the stylus on the record manually instead of using the lever. But each time I did it manually I was risking my record to be scratched, so try to definitely look into that.

I always keep the power off whenever I load or flip a record because this legit is a big fear of mine when playing records. Vinyl is pretty delicate unlike a cd because each of those microscopic grooves is what makes the sound through vibrating the needle, so I imagine the grooves are really delicate. So glad your mistake didn't make it impossible to get a replacement!

I did something similar. I had just bought an album and played the first side. When I went to flip it I removed the record weight that I used and it slipped out of my fingers. The bottom edge of the weight had carved a trench deep enough to bury a body in. That side was pretty much unplayable. I have since replaced the weight with one that isn't so slippery to hold.

I remember i went to a record store and found an extremely well preserved US 1st Pressing of Let it Be. I played it on the store’s turn table, but the store didnt have a lever to lift the stylus up. When I was finished listening, I tried lifting the lever up. I am a naturally shaky person, and so the stylus ended up slipping. The stylus made a fresh, clean “ZIIIP” sound and I watched a new, fresh white scratch form as it went from the last track to the run out. I was extremely shocked that nobody heard it, so I immediately put it back like it was nothing. I dont know if anyone knows about it to this day, besides the unfortunate lad who probably bought it with the scratch there not knowing he could’ve gotten it a week earlier when it was still scratch free.

a few weeks ago i was trying out my new record of room on fire by the strokes on my brothers turntable since i am upgrading to one with the same stylis and wanted to hear what it sounded like, when i dropped the needle with the level i was horrified when it dropped at maximum speed toward it instead of slowly lowering it. it jumped and skidded across track 2. it left one extremely large surface level scratch mark and one small deep scratch, but I was insanely lucky that the deep scratch was during the loudest part of the song so when i played over it i couldn't even hear the scratch being played on through the speakers. super lucky but now i am VERY careful of tonearm levers

I once bought a rare LP pressing, in near mint condition. On the train ride home I was looking at it, admiring it. The train slammed on the brakes, sending the record flying out of my hands and sliding across the seat on front of me, scratching it to death. Luckily it was only on the surface and all you heard was a slight brushing sound when it passed under the stylus.

I learnt the hard way too about scratching and damaging records. When I started collecting records back in the last week of 2019, I played one of the albums I got that day, which was Jamie xx's In Colour, and as I turned over the record from Side A to Side B, I accidentally dropped it and it hit the bench and rolled down the carpet away from the turntable, and I ended up scratching all over Side A of the record (Side B was fine so I continued playing it). Luckily, the album was in stock at a nearby JB Hi-Fi (I'm in Australia), the album was pretty cheap and there was an annual end-of-year sale across store and vinyls and CDs are usually 20% off, so I was able to order it online and have it delivered. I still keep the original to remind me that I should take extra care of my records, which is good because it hasn't happened since.

Glad you managed to get a replacement record. Yes, the lever issues are common, at least I've seen on Audio-Technica I guess there is some gelly silicon in the mechanism which dryes out or something and that causes needle to drop fast.

I have just today spent a ridiculous amount of money on some vinyls in which I am not financially stable enough for 😂 but I haven’t got a record player yet. I did this s the vinyls were preorders and I was intending to get the record player after. I have had a terrible £40 record player before but I am now intending to upgrade to the audio technica lp120. My question is, is this a good upgrade? Is it hard to assemble and look after as I am very inexperienced? Do I need anything else except some speakers for it? And what’s a good price for a pair of speakers? Thanks 🤗

Something similar happened to me, I pressed play like regularly but wasn’t thinking about the fact that it’s shaped like a buzz saw and you always have to pick up the needle yourself and I didn’t see exactly what happened but I think when it dropped it bounced the needle in the air and smacked right down in the middle of the record. It’s a grey record so it’s kind of hard to see things like scratches but I wouldn’t be surprised if it did scratch it somewhere

Well, i have an automatic Technics turntable, so something like this can't happen, but i have a few janky italian 45s where the lead-in groove part isn't wide enough, so the needle slipped down to the mat.
I also slipped a record after cleaning right onto the corner of my PC. The scratch looks ugly, but it's inaudible, because it was a 12" maxi-single where the grooves are deeper and thicker.
