I worked in radio for 40 years and when we requested albums or CDs to giveaway on-air they would often come as cutouts. As for what is in my collection; when I retired from radio last year I asked if I could pick the record attic. We had not played vinyl in decades and all those albums sat in an un heated attic that had been infested with raccoons at one point and had also suffered a roof leak. I was able to salvage about a hundred LPs and nearly all of them have promo labels and/or promo stickers on the jackets.

The only copy I have with a hole in it like the ones you showed in the video is a promo copy of the 1974 soundtrack to the Rocky Horror Show: The Original Roxy Cast (in case anyone forgot The Rocky Horror Picture Show was once a musical before becoming a film). It even has a sticker that says "Promo copy: Not for sale". It came in mint condition and even had the cardboard cutout of Tim Curry as Dr. Frank-N-Furter during the run of the Rocky Horror Show at the Roxy Theater in LA.

A few friends and I used to work summer jobs at the places that did these things back in the mid 70's. One of my jobs was to sit at a drill press, bundle a dozen or so together and drill through a corner. All. Day. Long. Somebody else would pack them up in cartons and they would be shipped to bargain dept stores. One of my friends did the same job at a different place only he stood at a band saw, doing the cut corners. Picked up a lot of bargains back then, they would usually sell for a buck or two at those stores.

Cut-out records saved me a lot of money in the 20th century. An addendum to your comment about a hole in the record sleeve indicating an original sleeve: As the vinyl record and sleeve were often put into the jacket by hand at the factory, a folded sleeve was not uncommon. Consequently I purchased cut-outs where the sleeve was untouched because the sleeve was folded away from the punched area.

My vintage LP of Kate Bush's "The Dreaming" has a hole punch in the upper right corner.
Also when I bought a used CD copy of Goldfrapp's 2017 album Silver Eye, I noticed that someone took a key to (scratched) the barcode and I was curious if it made that also a cutout.

    • @adz693
      @adz693 3 роки тому +3

Yeah - more modern way of a 'cutout' is to scratch thru the barcode - or sometimes you'll see a strikethru with a permanent marker pen. Any damage to barcode means cutout as it would be prevented from scanning as the original 'full price' album would have been.

Jarrett. You just got the right man. When I was a college student in the late 1980s - my entire intention was to get the vinyl records of my dreams, of my favorite bands, not even CDs. There was Kemp Mill Records next to my school, and I would find my favorite vinyl records for $2.99 or $3.99. It was such a blessing. I was able to collect some 70-80 cut-outs from my favorite bands. I still keep them for more than 30 years. They were all original pressings, brand new... I collected my major Judas Priest records from the 1970s and 80s that way :)) For someone who came from overseas, it was like, I was in heaven.

The cutout signified not only overstock but also discontinued and returns being sold as overstocks. The biggest point of the cutout was to make sure that the record was not returned by the retailer as full-price stock (either "new" or defective).

Yes , in my collection I have quite a few cutout vinyl covers.
As far as books go I worked in a five-and-dime store called Woolworths in the 70s and the Harley Quinn series Romance Books ,we tore the front covers off and send them back to the manufacturer , and destroyed to the trash bin the rest of the book we weren't allowed to resell them.
Which made sense since it was too heavy to send the book back for credit and they would destroy them anyway.

There is another reason, in the uk at least many records were available from the local library, they'd have the usual stamp ticket sleeve glued to the back, a 'property of [insert district] public library' stamp on either the front or the inner sleeve depending how mean the librarian felt and a hole punch on the open edge of the sleeve that'd be reinforced and hung up on a rack, some would have their corners cut as a deterrent to theft or reselling if they didn't have a hanging rack but both methods served the same purpose of preventing losses.

Some countries like Italy punched holes in the sleeve to indicate promotional records. I have one that says 'CAMPAIGNE GRATUITO' or thereabouts in punched holes. In Australia, it wasn't generally a hole punch. It was about a 2 centimetre long, straight cut. The amount of times as a kid I bought a record home and thought I did that!

They used to do this for 45 RPM 7 inch singles as well. These would be punched in the label section of the record. It was a good way to get classic 45s for way less than a dollar (as I recall, they were 79 cents, while new 45s at the time were 99 cents or more).

Yes, I have a few of them. It doesn't bother me, but I had thought the punch holes and cutouts were done by the store because they didn't sell well, which is partly correct, with the exception of them being returned to the record makers, and then resold to the stores.

I used to sell records in the 70's and early 80's. Interestingly, you can easily find "cut outs" of some of the best records ever made. It has nothing to do with the quality, usually. They just pressed too many. Whether it was a million seller or only sold a few thousand copies.

RCA developed the 45 along with an RCA autochanger. It was easier to design an autochanger for records with a larger hole. The RCA autochanger would switch records amazingly quickly, but would only play 45s. People by then were buying the 33 1/3 12" albums and so wanted players that could play both albums and singles. A lot of jukeboxes used the large hole records (I have such a jukebox), but most people play them using an adaptor, on an ordinary turntable.
Both LP and 45 came in about the end of the 1940s, so both systems came to the market at the same time, but the LP format was more convenient than folders containing several 45s.

    • @zombieman81

It was a "format war" at the end of the 40s, Columbia proposing the small holed 12" 33 1/3 rpm discs to replace the 78 rpm format and RCA Victor proposing the large holed 7" 45 rpm format. Search for "forgotten 1949 format war" and check out the video by Techmoan on this exact subject.

I was told that the holes were done by radio station DJs, and were meant so they could keep them on a loop. So if people requested a particular song or album a lot, they'd punch the hole on the corner and put it on a big key ring (loop). Hence why we play music on a loop.

I've bought (and sold) a few hundred overstock records. The craziest hole I had was a drill hole through the (off-) center of the cover and through the record label itself - yes, through the record! It should be just noted that the part about 12-inch records in relation to 7-inch singles is the other way around: Columbia's LP's were released *BEFORE* RCA's 7-inch 45's, so if they were an improvement over something, it was over the 78 RPM shellac records, which often came packed together in literal "record albums". The 45 records were also a replacement for the 78 records, and they also came packed in albums. The first 7-inch record players were automatic changers, and the purpose of the wide holes were that you could grab stacks of several records and listen to several songs in a row without manually changing records. In other words, for the purpose of collections of shorter songs, the 45's were arguably "better" than LP's, because you could arrange the songs however you wanted and make your own "playlists", so to speak. That's why they became popular among teenagers during the rise of rock 'n' roll.
Eventually the 12-inch records won the battle for long albums, while 7-inch records became the preferred medium for singles

I only have 3 cut out CDs in my music collection. None of my vinyl or cassettes have one.
Carlene Carter Little Acts of Treason album - hole drilled in the spine.
Céline Dion Au Coeur Du Stade album - hole drilled through the cover all the way to the CD tray.
Céline Dion Je Sais Pas single - cut out like at 5:25.

I work in the claims office in retail and I have to tear the covers off books regularly. It's awful. Thank God I don't have to damage records, I'd probably outright quit if I had to do that.

Song of the day - Devo: Jocko Homo. Its ’80 Punk Parody.
Cutouts ruin the collectability of the record. I often buy them only if they’re still sealed so I have a new unplayed pressing. For albums I love, I buy another copy which hasn’t been adulterated and switch out the album covers, only if its in the same series.

Sometimes it was the record retailers who marked the records so they could sell older stock at a discount. I know of one store that use to do this. They would then sell a $10 or $20 record for $2. Surprisingly, it doesn't seem to have affected resale value on many records as much as it should have.
It doesn't seem to have been done to CDs as much as with vinyl. Mostly they CDs were just discounted. It was harder to cut the plastic without doing too much damage. And if one bought a notched CD it was possible to replace the case so that only the booklet might show some damage.

There was a big cottage industry around cutouts, and there were rack jobbers that would provide cutouts to "nontraditional" stores like grocery stores and pharmacies. This practice lives on the bargain DVD\Bluray and video game bins you see at the grocery store.
And a lot of American cutout records were exported, mostly to Canada and parts of Europe. This did not make the rightsholders in the receiving countries happy because these albums were a fraction of the local price and they got no royalties from them. Some countries (like Australia I think) had laws that banned imports of grey market records to protect local rightsholders.

Yeah, I have a few US import records with that 'damage' done..... I knew what it was when I bought it, and if it was inexpensive enough, then yeah, I'll get it!
In all my years as an Englishman, in England, I've never seen any of our record companies or stores do that kind of damage to 'excess' records.... they'd just get sent back out from the companies with "New Low Price" label flashes, etc. instead.... a much nicer way to sell surplus stock - as long as you can get the new sticker off without tearing up the cover!! :-D

Thank you so much for clearing this up. My theory was that stores made the holes, so they can hang that record on display. Seemed impractical, so I stopped thinking about it. Anyways, I have two such records, one is cut in the upper left
(Warriors - Warriors I) and the other one is uper right (Motorhead - No Sleep Till Hammersmith, Yugoslavian edition)

Thant reminded me of my parents collection of 45, some had holes punched in the center label(not speaking of the center one). When I asked them why, they simply replied that they were given in bags of chips. I was never able to verify that. I’m from Canada btw.

I had bought a hand full but didn't realize the "hole punch" on the album cover until months later. I always thought they were somewhat defected recorded copies. Even to the point that i would skip some purchases because of that assumption alone. Wish I knew this then. Thanks!

When I worked at a record store in my teens, promo CD’s had notches taken off the sides of the jewel boxes where the hinge is. Same with cassette cases.
We never received any promo records. Not sure why since we sold a *ton* of full albums and 12” remixes and singles (this was around 1990).

I only have one cutout record, Mainstreet People by Four Tops. Found two at the same second hand store where one was cut off and the other wasn't, the one that wasn't had some scratches though so I took the once missing a corner. Honestly, the shape looks kinda neat so I don't mind it, it's a good soul album with an interesting jacket is all :)

actually, the 7inch came out around the same time as the LP... techmoan had a video about the kind of format war the 2 kinds of records had, before LPs and 7" there were 78 shellac records which also only held about 4 minutes
