This is a fantastic start to choosing new windows -- nice video. However, this test only address one of several important factors of how a window performs. This is a test of blocking radiant heat passing through a window (specifically windows that get hit by direct sunlight) . It does very little to address the equally important aspect of U value, which would show how much of your home's cool (in summer) or warm (in winter) escape out a window. The U value of a window addresses the other two types of heat flow conduction (heat moving through things that touch) and convection (heat transferring through a liquid or gas). These other types of heat transfer are slower to measure. In short look for windows with lower U values. You can also get new or replacement windows that WILL let more radiant heat in from the sun but have low U values (research SHGC solar heat gain coefficient). Very importantly, if building a new home, design the house with proper overhangs on the south facing sides this will allow the sunlight to hit windows and heat the house in the winter and the overhang will shade the window in the summer (research passive solar design). The other important thing about windows is how well they seal -- if it doesn't close properly and is leaky that can overwhelm the other factors.

Ever do the old "nail through a 1×"? You take a roofing nail, drive it through a 1 inch spruce board with a pane of glass, then beat it out the other way and use the edge to finish pulling it out?

Honestly none of this matters, it’s what holds the glass that matters the most, the frame is everything and all glass performs great when it’s new but teaching materials and how they break down in the elements is most important

Forget the showmanship... which light best emulates the sun? Are results consistent across all bulbs if you eliminate the pink insulation pane?

Hi. Nice explanation. About the bulbs,.... may i ask which type of bulb really represent the sun heat on the window? Thanks.

I'd like to see the difference between double pane with 2 low-e panes and a triple pane with 2 low-e panes. Basically I want to see the benefit of more panes of glass, but in this test the triple pane has more low-e than the double so its not a good comparison. This is, of course, assuming that low-e works both ways. That is to say, a single coat blocks both heat leaving from inside and heat entering from outside.

      yes, exactly.
and we need a test with convection instead of radiation lamp.

Unless you are talking about an exposed surface4 coating, quality dual pane windows don't come with coatings on two different lites, despite what certain internet "experts" claim. There are a few low end companies that offer coatings on both inside surfaces but it's a more marketing than innovation and just not a good idea.
The primary benefit of triple pane over dual pane is having two separate air spaces at optimal thickness that can both be gas filled, and the ability to coat two separate lites the correct way for best long term performance.
Theoretically the wider the space between the lites the better the insulating performance should be because dead air is a great insulator. Unfortunately this isn't the case because the air between the lites isn't dead, it's constantly moving creating convection currents inside the space and the wider the air space the more the currents are moving. Replacing the air in the space with argon or krypton helps due to these gasses being denser than air and that slows the formation of the convection currents within the space. The optimum width of the space in a standard IGU is 7/16" to 9/16" when using argon gas and about 3/16" to 5/16" when using krypton.
The result is that two argon-filled airspaces at 7/16" are substantially more efficient than a single airspace at 7/8". In fact a single airspace at 7/16" is more efficient than a single airspace at 7/8" in most situations.

So if front of my house gets no sun will triple pane really make any difference in heat from outside since no sun radiation is trying to penetrate glass

You do a good job of distracting the viewer from thinking about the most important elements of the glass: how LONG will it insulate for and how long before it fogs up from failure. Triple pane glass is a gimmick to give great u-factor scores, but it's going to be full of fog in a few years - or sometimes sooner. Educated customers should ask questions like, "Why doesn't a manufacturer like Andersen - the oldest, largest, and most trusted window company in North America - offer triple pane glass?"

Hi Tim, thanks for taking the time to write. Do you have any evidence of that or are you just making things up? The Windows we offer come with lifetime warranties that cover seal failures and we don't get too many calls from folks we worked with 10+ years ago.
If you have any documentation of love to see it.

And there are many things Andersen doesn't offer. That's a strange criteria to use. They do quite a bit with new construction which is a much more price focused business than a remodeling or replacement project. Good luck out there. +TheWindowDog.com

If you are a "window expert" certainly you know that Andersen pioneered the entire US window industry. Andersen was making wood windows for 50 years before Marvin or Pella even started making windows. Andersen invented vinyl windows in 1959 (never brought to market due to quality concerns) and they invented clad-wood windows in 1966 (still used in new construction applications). Their scientists and engineers invented insulating gas in 1952, and they were the first to make Low-E standard in 1983. So, no, it's not a strange criteria to use. When a company is the pioneer of an entire industry like Andersen is, and they have the history and the funds ($2.5 billion annually) to produce whatever they want, then it is important to ask why they chose not to offer certain items. Andersen doesn't make triple pane and they don't make fiberglass or vinyl. Why? My guess is because they want to maintain their reputation with real quality, not gimmicks.

+Tim Barnes Andersen makes fine Windows. We just installed a project with Andersen Windows last week. There are many options they don't offer so your assessment that something is bad because Andersen doesn't offer it is what I think is silly. Which Andersen line do you sell?

When the window keeps the sun-heat out... It will not give any warmth in wintertime ! Isn't that a negative trade-off ?

      yes and nobody calculates that!

    • @hoseman10

That is why I am just keeping my old single pane windows to let the sun in during the winter to warm the house up and just close my plantation shutters to keep out the heat from the direct sunlight during the summer from my windows facing west. My old windows don't have seals to break so the expensive dual or triple pane windows will never need replacing. They are just a sales pitch and way over priced.
