Finger Drumming Green Day's "Basket Case" on Maschine

  • This is a Maschine mk3 performance of Tré Cool's drum part over a drumless version of "Basket Case" by Green Day.
    It's not a 1 on 1 copy, since punk rock isn't classical music and the whole point of it is to don't give a f... and just rock out, so that's what I did :-)
    Blog post accompanying this lesson: questforgroove...
    And if you're new to this channel and / or finger drumming in general, make sure to check out this beginner tutorial in which I explain the pad layout that I use and and some of my basic finger drumming techniques: • Finger Drumming Tutori...

    Before discovering these UA-cam video's I'd never have thought it was possible to sound so convincingly "real" with finger drumming. I can't believe it, it's an amazing performance. Those fills!

    • @TheQuestforGroove
      @TheQuestforGroove  3 роки тому +2

      Yeah it's possible! I figured that out and felt like I had to share / prove that to the world, hence the video :-) I also made lots of courses on questforgroove.com sharing how I did it, so other people can learn as well. It is a lot of work, just like any other instrument but possible for sure.

    Great job! Everytime I see someone doing something as cool as this I regret buying push 2 instead of maschine mk3 as I'm more of a rythm guy myself...

    • @TheQuestforGroove
      @TheQuestforGroove  6 років тому +6

      Yeah push 2 is a quality device but not the ultimate best for Finger drumming. I tried playing on my friends push 2 and the maschine mk3 is definitely more sensitive. It is cool to see how some people control ableton with it though.
      Learning the basics of Finger drumming can be done on a push though. And once you want to take it to the next level you can switch.
      Maybe if someone would buy you push for 500 dollars you only have to chip in another 100 and then get a maschine. Or maybe there's someone who actually would rather have a push 2 than a maschine...

    • @disassembleverything
      @disassembleverything 3 роки тому

      I've been learning finger drumming on a push 2 now for a few months(82 day streak and counting on Melodics haha) and love it! There's also pad sensitivity and pad gain options in the Setup menu(button is in the top-corner of the Push 2) that make it plenty dynamic as well.

    Awesome! Love all the fills. Watching this gave me an idea for a video you could do. Finger drumming techniques for drum solos. Obviously you need to get a solid groove going for a song but what about when you get a solo? Just a thought🤔.

    heys awesome playing exactly what i am looking for! no one else as far as i searched do something like this with drum pads. i am looking to getting these drum pads to play drums, but i see that on garageband on the ipad you can do the same. but i hear this thing has velocity sensitivity? does that mean that if you touch it lightly, the drum will sound soft, and if you hit it hard it will sound loud? and will the pad be able to change the drum sounds to reflect all the details?
    i've been looking for a video to demonstrate this but can't find any, could be a good video to show it if it actually works like that. been watching a lot of your videos to learn about drum pads and finger drumming and you're #1 and the go to guy for it :3 thanks for making and sharing these videos~!

    • @TheQuestforGroove
      @TheQuestforGroove  3 роки тому +2

      Hey I think you understand it quite well! Yes, the device I'm playing has velocity sensitivity which means a soft touch sends a soft midi note and a hard tap sends a loud midi note and everything in between. In most cases you then need drum emulator software to accurately translate those midi notes. I always use Addictive Drums 2 for this. Great program with great realistic sounds (as you can hear in this video. This is the Fairfax 1 kit I believe). Right now, the best rig to get is still a regular computer / laptop with a cheap audio interface like the Focusrite Scarlett solo and Addictive Drums 2 software. Then you have great sound, almost no latency (which is important for accurate timing of your drumming) and all relatively affordable. One final tip: Wait until Addictive Drums has a black friday or haloween sale. Usually youll get 50% off! Step by step setup guides can be found on my website for free: questforgroove.com/course/beginnercourse/

    I noticed you look away from the pads a lot. Is this intentional?

      First of all not looking is indeed better. Also helps with listening! Second of all, I think I turn my head mostly because it helps me focus... it could have been something else, like making a stank face, but nowadays I always do this... Anyhow, try and sit /stand up straight and not look at the pads, because that is good for sure!

    How long does it take for you to do something like this? I assume there are two phases: figuring out what the patterns are at each part of the song, then getting the muscle memory down / memorizing them? How long does it take at each step? Or do you just mostly have enough good intuition at this point that you can skip straight to playing it?

    • @TheQuestforGroove
      @TheQuestforGroove  3 роки тому +3

      This took me quite some time. Indeed, first figuring everything out. I am fast at that, but then I will slow down the track and practice for like 3 days super slow, then speed it up, again 3 days and then the week after that I move to full speed and nail the song. But It's safe to say that something like this would take me two weeks. But not 2 weeks of only doing this. Just 2 weeks of regular practice sessions.

      The Quest for Groove somewhat inspired by you, you will find The answer on my UA-cam channel (some eraly fingerdrumming vids there to) not really comparible, but if i wanted The mk3 to be drums, i might just go for an actuall drumset. This maschine is another type of instrument imo, it has other possibiltys, wich is not better or worse, just different and with that opens a new way to create a live set. Hey Robert! It’s amazing to me
    That you can do these rapid hits consecutively on the pads. Is this something you can accomplish on just the Maschine mk 3 with the included drum software such as the Abbey Roads kits?

      Yeah this can be done with abbey road kits for sure! Dont know it theyre included with maschine... i own them from the komplete bundle. Cheaper controllers like the mikro mk3 are also perfectly fine by the way.

      I can recommend the maschine mikro mk3 for a little more ($250). Best 4x4 for the money by far.
      Otherwise the launchpad X (8x8 for $200) and if it really has to stay below that I would go for a second hand "white" korg pad kontrol, maybe a second hand maschine mikro mk2 or mikro mk3 (but they have to give you the software license as well) and otherwise a presonus atom for $150.

    Is it possible to use a foot trigger to the kick drum on the pad? It would make this feel like more of a drum set.

    • @TheQuestforGroove
      @TheQuestforGroove  5 років тому

      Well, yes and no. Plugging in a foot trigger into the maschine doesnt send the right type of signal.
      Youd have to get some sort of e-drum module with midi out and then just use that. So it'll mean you're using two devices and two midi inputs to control 1 drumkit. That's possible for sure but not super duper easy I'm afraid.

      @@TheQuestforGroove you can control the type of signal it sends within native's 'controller editor' ... the pedal can trigger notes and more ;)

      @TheQuestforGroove  5 років тому

      Oh wow, thanks for that info. My guess is you need a standard stage piano pedal thing though, not a real hihat foot pedal from roland or something. I had one of those and it does not seem to output midi. It sends another type of signal for e-drums.

      You just put it in your DAW program (digital audio workstation like logic, ableton or cubase) and then you create a separate drum instrument. (I use addictive drums 2 for that) and then you can just jam away.

      Thank you so much! I'll write it down, but I cannot make any promises. The problem with drum covers is the copyright. i don't care about the ad money but the problem is that the video can get blocked all of a sudden. Had that happen before, so I'm less eager to do drum covers of "real" songs nowadays. I do try and put some self made songs with fun drumming on here once in a while.

      @@TheQuestforGroove Hey Rob. Groove is definitely Everything! Great Site, Teaching, and Videos. I have been watching your site for a couple of weeks. I am a Guitar player, using the Reaper DAW as well, and want to do demos (as the Meat and Potatoes of my songs and bring them later to real musicians). I am looking at joining your courses soon, and to purchase the Maschine MK3, along with the Addictive Drums 2, and as you state/quote on your QFG forum to get:
      "Addictive Drums 2 as the 6 kits is probably a good idea if you can afford it.
      In order from most important to least:
      • Black Oyster (this one is just great for practicing because all the sounds are very clear)
      • Fairfax 1 Fairfax 2 (*Maybe) (very versatile)
      • Funk (because I use some of the kit pieces in my presets for the courses)
      • Blue Oyster (to me this comes close to a nice drum kit in a worship type environment… great room tone)
      • Session percussion (these sounds are unlike any other drum sound so nice for variety and some extra percussion parts when you need them)
      • Indie (just a nice, versatile, fat sounding kit)"

    Is there anyway of making a living (money) from doing this (finger drumming). I am getting into it and would like to know if I can make it into a living and how

    • @TheQuestforGroove
      @TheQuestforGroove  6 років тому +4

      I cannot predict the future but there's lots of people in need of good drum tracks for their productions 24/7 so if you become a professional that can churn out great sounding original grooves upon request I bet there's a market for you out there.
      Personally I would use finger drumming as a way to develop yourself as a musician and learn how to be a good producer as well. Learn a harmonic instrument like the guitar or piano as well, learn how to record and mix music, work with a DAW, stuff like that. I think the glorydays of the studio drummer / pianist /guitarist are over and most of them will be replaced by studio-everything people who can do more than one thing and do it fast.
      It's hard making a living in the music business though and if you're just getting started you have to be willing to invest years and years of hard work before getting your first paycheck as a musician. The best reason to invest your time in something like this is because you love it and playing makes you happy. :-)

      I know Jeremy Ellis plays live sometimes and even played some gigs with The Roots (nice band). And there's a lot of setups where a musician plays along with a DJ in clubs here in Amsterdam. I bet a fingerdrummer could be part of such an endeavour.
