      This GAME is FANTASTIC but as you have gathered it is complicated and this has made me also hesitant, the same as you:) I bought the game over a year ago and have tried many times to play it and suggest you watch videos to sway you to play as I have:)

    I only recently got into this game and I've just gotta say THANK YOU for making this video. There's a lot in this game that has to be learned -- and not via intuition. I've only spent a handful of hours in the game so far, but in the first 20min of your commentary I learned so many things which I had previously missed in my play sessions. 4yrs later your video is still helping noobs like me.

    Dude, thank you so much for this video. I already had most of the basics down, but I didn't yet fully grasp how missions and signal sources worked. After this, I picked up a 'kill pirates' mission and made 160k in like an hour and a half. Traded my stock Sidewinder for a 140k ship + upgraded power distrubutor.

    Hey ! Finally bought the game with a 67% discount on steam ! about 10 hours in the bag and i must say i'm impressed. After seeing most of your videos i felt confident about starting, but entering the tutorials in the first couple of minutes made me realize flying and watching someone else fly are 2 different stories. Specially safely exiting SC and fuel scooping. I got too close to a star and tried to run away but i panicked with all the warnings and just left the computer to grab something to eat, thinking i would die. A few minutes later i was still spinning close to the sun and was able to jump with 9% hull... A hell of a first impression lol

    Troa, thank you for this guide. You have most certainly helped me understand a lot of things about the game that I was struggling with. I knew most of the basics except maybe the item descriptions, which you have now helped me understand so much better.
    Like you I also use an x52 and I've been playing since Beta 2, but the biggest thing I struggled with was just a solid way to make money and knowing what to do or where to go. I'm not used to such an open ended game that doesn't have a tutorial or missions that say "go here, do this"...
    So again, thanks. You've earned a subscription out of me and I'll be watching your other videos to distract me from working ;)

    • @TroaBarton
      @TroaBarton  9 років тому

      Josh Aurelio Thank you so much for subscribing, watching, and commenting! Currently the best ways to make money after you're out of that sidewinder are to bounty hunt, and rare item trade. After that its trading all the way once you're in a Type 7. But in an open world its more about the journey than anything else. And don't go getting in trouble at work because of me lol

    • @joshaurelio7051
      @joshaurelio7051 9 років тому +1

      No more trouble than I'm usually in, ;)
      I've been watching all your videos and working my way up after seeing this one. Love how you named your A.I. Aziz... That makes me chuckle every time I hear it.
      I was wondering what you use for recording and editing software? What you do with these videos and streaming is something I've wanted to get into for a while and just ... Idk... Don't put in enough effort on my part to make it work. But I still want to. Let me know when you can!
      Thanks again!

    • @TroaBarton
      @TroaBarton  9 років тому +1

      Josh Aurelio
      I swear UA-cam needs to be better at letting me know when I get a new comment... Sorry I took so long to see this.
      I miss Aziz.. I really need to get my A.I. outta hoc at Lave.
      As far as making videos and streaming goes the first things first, you're going to need a good computer. Streaming and recording videos while playing a game is really hard on your CPU, HDD, and RAM. Then you are going to need a good graphics card(s) so that your game looks the way that it should. you also need at least a 1080p monitor as well to output at youtube resolutions without upscaling.
      The most important part though is getting a good mic. Ive got a lot of videos and most of them are recorded with a bad mic and you can tell.. Most people can forgive hicups in video because of streaming being what it is right now. Most people however, will not tolerate bad audio. Some people will even go so far as to base their subscription purely on the sound of your voice and character, so it really is very important.
      I currently use open broadcaster "obs" to stream and record for the most part. Its very CPU heavy and free so its difficult to figure out all the settings for your game and setup. But it is free so that's a plus.
      I also use Shadowplay to record some footage, its an encoder built into my GPU from Nvidia. The footage is much better but sometimes buggy either without video or sound so I cant rely on it but I try to catch moments with it.
      I use Sony Movie Maker Platinum as my editor. Its cheap and checks all the boxes, but it is buggy as hell and decides to just not do somethings ever. I stll cant customize my MP4 Export settings lol. But really for the money you cant beat it the only other non-linear editor of any account is I think an extra hundred bucks.
      I now record my audio separately with Audacity and merge them in post. Notice the lack of that click noise? :)
      Finally you need good consistant internet speeds to stream and upload to youtube The last video I uploaded was 3.51GB as a compressed MP4. Takes a while to encode and upload :)
      Good luck getting into it though :) Its a, for the most part thankless hobby, you earn very little and sometimes have to deal with some very rude or ignorant people while pouring days into each episode. But there are times when you get those good comments that really light your day up. Hopefully I can one day do this full time and actually make a living at this. I have an awesome subscriber base! And despite the downs this hobby can have the positives for me at least, are very much worth it. :)

    • @joshaurelio7051
      @joshaurelio7051 9 років тому +1

      Troa Barton Haha, it's all good. I knew you'd see it eventually.
      I've definitely got the hardware covered as far as computer specs. I just built this computer about 2 months ago and am pretty sure it can handle the load aspect. The only part I might have to work towards is the mic. I've got a gaming headset (which for the most part has been good for my needs), however I have been wanting to get something with a bit more quality. So I might look into that.
      The software was really the only thing I wasn't sure about. For Streaming I've used xsplit in the past (which now they have gamecaster, which is a bit more streamlined than broadcaster was)... but I'll definitely take a look at "obs" as well. Thank you for the info on all of the software you use. It gives me an idea of where to start and look.
      Internet speed really hasn't been a problem either, though I have comcast, *shiver*. Still waiting on Google Fiber to come to Nashville, which they have been doing construction for it. :)
      I'm used to dealing with irritable people. Since, I've been on the internet for quite a while and have dealt with different kinds of gaming communities, plus 11 years of customer service experience. :)
      Thanks once again, Troa ... I'll hopefully see you around when you stream! Gonna subscribe over to your twitch as well. I'll pop in if I'm free.

      Oh this is woefully outdated but the basic premise is still very relevant. All I would add to this if I were able to update it is surface missions, how to land on planets, and passenger missions. The UI is completely different now in stations and I would also advise to get your bearings before getting into powerplay. Those would be the additions I would make to the guide but the points I bring up in the guide are still applicable.
      Thank you both for watching and commenting and hopefully this helps you get pointed in the right direction.

      Thanks a lot for your reply. Very useful video indeed. Learned quite a few things. So now I am like 5 hours in (tutorials are done and my controls are finaly comfortable). I am experiencing what seems to be a very well known "issue". I can't accept any mission because they are all too far from where I can accept them. I go from one system to another searching for available missions but so far I only found one.
      I upgraded a piece on my Sidewinder so now I can jump 8Ly instead of 6Ly but it's still too short for most missions .... Any tips ?

    • @NoobieLandCity
      @NoobieLandCity 7 років тому

      I got a tips for you, buy gimballed weapon especially if you don't have a joystick.. it make your weapon auto aim at enemy targetted like an aimbot if you want.. the only downside is if your opponent use defence system to screw your aim with decoy but it doesn't last long or you can bind a key to switch your gimballed weapon to fixe temporally then switch back when the decoy are gone. And the other downside is that gimballed weapon does a little less damage, but I can tell you I play with a xbox controller "better than mouse and keyboard" and without gimballed weapon I could fight in the training tutorial the first enemy for like 20min lol

    A professional grade instructional video, with a Kick-ass ending! I loved how you put me into the sense of like being tutored like this was real life and these were your best suggestions for beginning my ED pilot career. Good info. clear and easy to follow. Bravo Mr. Barton. And then.. Jeez-o-Pete! You pilot like an ace fighter. I just finished watching an ED series where the host was constantly blasting past intended stops, bouncing off the portals in the docks, and always looking away and opening menus while in close proximity to other objects, and playing with other monitors and websites (off screen) during recording. Kind of like a teenager who won't stop texting and driving, and is always distracted. He's like "Ooh what's that? * stares at object .. *CRASH!!* - ship destroyed - * I must have screamed at the screen " What are you doing?" "Slow Down your gonna pass it again!!" Look out!" "It's right freaking THERE!" and "WTF are you thinking?!" a hundred times. Seems like a cool guy though. Just a bad, distracted pilot. I was facepalming so much and I have never picked up a modern game controller let along a PC game. But you.. Damn dude... color me impressed! Especially that Viper session at the end. You lit them up! I would LOOOVE to try this game but sadly I have not played a game since the original Playstaton, my PC is just an off-the-shelf, 580 dollar HP with no bells & whistles, and my ISP is totally pathetic at 8 Mbps↓ and 2 Mbps↑ So I'll just keep living vicariously through the ED videos like this.
    Thanks for the awesome video Mr. Barton!

    Little advice for new players: A: Do the tutorial, whether you are on XB1 or computer. mistakes are costly and frustrating.
    B:For hauling/bulletin board jobs upgrade your FSD as fast as possible (2A max on sidewinder), it makes most jobs worlds easier.

    Really helpful, thankyou! Knowing that the Power Distributor should be the first upgrade, and that no loss is made when you sell/downgrade equipment and weapons was useful. Plus knowing that Coriolis stations rotate anticlockwise ;) Instead of going to a nav point looking for trouble, some of the missions means it tends to find you, with bounties or kill bonuses leading to good money. The cops typically help you get the kill too. So, a mix of mission rewards, kills, and trading to keep the cargo bay full leads to the next ship fairly quickly. Although I am all about the blowing stuff up, trading missions do take you to cool places and teach you the game economy, so I do recommend them.

      That really depends on if you've played these kinds of games before, or if you're quick to pick things up. Overall I'd say it isnt too hard but there is definitely a learning curve that isn't a short one. Kind of like learning to ride a bike for the first time, once you figure it out it's easy, but you're likely going to fall off a few times before you do.
      Keep in mind that I've been playing for a long time before making this video and I am using a HOTAS setup, so don't hold yourself to the standard I've set. :)

    Picked this up on my Xbox One and it plays a treat.
    I thought it would be useless given the lack of buttons vs a PC, but they have integrated the controls perfectly and after a short time, I found the game very enjoyable.
    I'm an old timey gamer and remember the original Elite back in 84. Some of the old skills are still there too.
    Still trying to find my way around as there is a TON of content and an entire galaxy to explore.
    I think this is a game that'll eat up 100's up on 100's of hours for me.
    It's great to see this new version has been treated with great respect and still maintains what made the original so damn good, yet updates everything while keeping the core the same.
    This is a great vid and helped me get to grips with the basics easily...seeing as the game teaches you nothing outside of bare basic tutorials.

    I wonder why the most complex games on the market often are those with the worst tutorials. You start this game of completely clueless on what to do and how basic game mechanics work, just a combat docking and travel tutorial then off you go into the vast space.... I hate that so freaking much, its just lazy and arrogant of the game developers. But good job taking over were they failed, just know you are doing their work for free.

    Thanks! Was more in depth than most videos, you showed examples and displayed what you were talking about rather than just talking about it.

      AThreePercenter Thats exactly what I wanted to accomplish :) Im Happy to hear that it was noted and appreciated. I get a lot of flak for not cutting things down, I like to be thorough.

    Thanks for this vid. I came in saying that I'd only watch like 5 minutes but it was too compelling. Learned a lot!

    Good tutorial for this newb to the game fella. Thanks for posting it!
    Kind of funny the target destination for the first mission is LTT-1349. Watched Ph1lt0r defending a capital ship there last week.

    Troa, I played this game (pipe cleaner when I was in my early 20's, at 55yr old now I seen this and totally blown away, watched yr video's and very helpful.
    Game appears to have many many more controls but hey I'm jumping in again.
    Good work, well done

      Funny I still play that game too, but I can't put instructional videos up or I'll get flagged ;)
      On a serious note, I'm happy to hear it was informative have fun once you dive in and don't worry about losing a ship in the beginning.

      Troa,
      A little advice please, when watching your play throughs, I heard you mention a few times a joystick and separate thruster control. Do you know if this will work with a iMac ? ? ? as using the keyboard seems to be a nine starter.
      Thank you in advance
