This is exactly what I need! An iPad adds much less weight, often times after I finished packing all my cameras and lights I felt the weight is okay, but when I squeezed my 13" MacBook pro (which is pretty light compared to the 16") in the bag, it suddenly weights like a ton.
What's iPad battery life like when tethering to CaptureOne? Also, is there an adapter setup that allows you to simultaneously charge and tether if you're using a wall socket or external power pack?
Hello friend, I would like to know how it is to record on the sd memory card, because I didn't find any Capture One configuration about it. The new updates of Capture One on Desktop have this adjustment, but on the iPad I couldn't. I use a Canon 5DMK4 and Ipad. The connection is all right.
When I would shoot for magazines, I would tether to a Microsoft Surface with Capture One. The magazine staff would gather around the assistant holding the Surface and be able to direct changes they want on the fly. The only limitation was the buffer speed of the images taking a while to get to the Surface via the Tether tools cable. When the Sony a7RIV came out, I was able to direct JPGs to be sent out to the tether while the RAWs got written to the card. The speed of this was so much quicker, I was able to ditch the cable and do it wirelessly. Having a large screen that the editor of the magazine can see and direct stuff is amazing. Same with a MUA or stylist being able to see any issues that need to be corrected. I have a couple videos on my channel showcasing this (shameless plug).

Fantastic Video, can you do one that explains the cloud transfer service? Your videos are usually easy to understand and more informative then most manufactures are.
I have a 2 questions. 1. Do you a external hard drive with your iPad when you do shoots because the file are big. 2. How much space do you carry on your iPad if you don’t carry a SSD?
I'm currently on a 256 GB iPad, however I plan on upgrading to a type C (current iPad is 12" pro with lightning) and will probably go to 512 GB. That being said 256 is more than enough for me for a single day shoot, I'm just going to go to a 512 so I don't have to be concerned about offloading so rapidly.
@@mikel5094 I shoot raw of course. My images are quite large as my cams are 50 / 60 MP, but my shoots aren't often high volume. My raw file size is irrelevant to your use case though. Divide storage size by file size and you'll know how many images you can store on it, and decide what size is enough based on the volume of your shoots. Example: a 250 GB iPad would hold a bit under 10,000 40MB raw images, depending on how much space you use for other apps.
Sounds good but, what I would like is live view that my blind ars could see what the camera sees why make exposure, focus &, composition adjustments. Thanks for the vid.
Hello, thank you very much for the video. It's a great help! I wanted to ask you how you do it with the memory management? Do you have a workflow for it? Otherwise, the storage space of the iPad will fill up quickly.
Going to give this a shot. I have been tethering Cascable which does give you live view but it doesn’t seem to have all the raw capabilities of Capture One.
You don't speak about "live View" feature. Is it possible with the present release ? As an architecture photographer I mostly shoot on tripod and need a large view to adjust the frame of my photo. Today I'm using a Camranger 2 device because the live View is possible.
Thank you for a great video, I got a lot out of it, I have been doing tethering for some time. the iPad seems to be a great way to go when on location. My assistants had to set up a Wifi when we were on location!
You need the iPad lightning to camera dongle (which goes lightning to USB type A. And then you need whatever the USB output of your camera is, to type A.
The Sony edge app has been improved and specifically work perfectly with the new cameras. I've been using the edge app and so far I'm in love with it. I only use to make sure everything looks good. Not for editing
Hoping maybe you or someone on here knows if there is a way to prevent the camera from draining the iPad battery. I noticed with camera turned off, but connected, the camera charging light is on. I've googled, but can't find it.
I edit in Capture One and Affinity photo and found …if your a Sony user.. that Sony has improved there free image edge software so much I use it for straight tethering wirelessly..no cables and it works great on my iPad. Since I dont speed shoot I can see what I’m getting and do further edits later.

Or maybe use on-location CaptureOne for tethering, and at home maybe use Adobe tools if you're an adobe subscriber (cheaper than CaptureOne subscription).... 😅 Thanks
I've been looking into buying an ipad just for tethering out of the studio. Apparently a single application is limited to use 5gb ram so the 16gb makes a very marginal difference. Stuck between surface 7 or ipad...

When tethering to a computer, I (almost) always back up to a second drive multiple times throughout the day. And if I have a very full day I can fill a hard drive pretty fast. Is there a good way to use the Ipad and back up to a second drive?
Can one control the camera and camera settings from the App? And a couple of comments: 1. The price proposition of Capture One is in general pretty bad, I still have my perpetual license but paying each year or the monthly pricing is just nonsense it used to cost more than Lightroom plus Photoshop plus cloud storage from adobe, it's true they cut the pricing but I already have the subscription. Yes capture One is better at tethering, but the image quality difference is no longer universal. (it now depends on the image) and in any case, if one wants the best image quality one should go with the native software. Clearly as a Sony shooter Capture, One is the best for you. Very nice overview.
this is great. though I've found in the past that when tethering, creatives and magazine people have rejected pics that I've gotten me home and looked at in more depth and cropped and played with and they are the best pics. I've enjoyed telling people I can't tether and they'll have to wait.

Well on my iPad I had to use the Lighting to USB 3 camera adapter (I have a knock off version of the Apple One which is overpriced IMO). But, in terms of the cable, as long as you have proper connectors any cable that actually has data transfer should work, don't think it needs to be "very specific" at all.
