    Hi, I was born and Bred in Cape Town. I also studied at UCT and everything you said here is accurate. Reason why I relocated to Johannesburg. Don't get me wrong, I love my hometown but the subtle institutionalised racism was always something that bothered me, whereas Joburg yeah no, I'm happy. Nonetheless I still love the Cape I'm obviously biased because it's my hometown but hey every city had positives and negatives.

    What you describe as institutional racism is about the super wealthy retaining their wealth and power.
    Cape Town is full of old money, established way before the end of apartheid. A lot of that wealth has been in the family for generations.
    I've spent some limited time around such people and the only thing they respect is extreme wealth. If you're an average middle class guy, they might be polite to you but they'll never take you really seriously, doesn't matter if you're black or white.
    I'm talking about the ultra wealthy now. The kind of people who own multiple wine estates or even entire nature reserves.
    So yes they might be racist, but they're also no kinder to their middle class white counterparts.

    • @AI-gd7lz
      @AI-gd7lz 3 роки тому +3

      @@roybean7166 here are what studies say about this:
      "Township tourism has become a booming and highly lucrative sector within the tourist industry. More and more companies push into the market in order to meet the growing demand for this kind of tours. In the early days of this development, the tours had been organized by the residents of the townships themselves. In later years, the big and interregional operating (“white”) tour and travel companies also adjusted their offers to this development and included township tours into their (hitherto
      conventional) product range."
      "The analyses have shown that cultural categories are being introduced by the operators
      specifically in order to induce a “cultural view” among the tourists. Rarely do the tourists´ expectations before the tour directly refer to something cultural. Initially, social and above all economic differences are in the focus of the tourists´ interests (“watching the poor”, “looking at the shacks”). Culture or the cultural heritage becomes a centre of attention only
      during the tour. The way in which this happens partly reinforces old stereotypes and
      clichés of colonial origin (“African superstition”, “poor but happy”). From this perspective, a correspondence between poverty and the cultural “other” is easily produced in the context of township tourism. Thus, an exoticisation of deprivation takes place which entails an
      aesthetic configuration or culturalization of poverty. Together with the sense of insecurity
      (put into perspective by the security of the minivan), the socio-voyeuristic wants of bourgeois “thrillseekers” are satisfied."

      That’s awesome man. December has such nice weather. Great time to move here. There’s quite a lot of nice places to stay in Cape Town. I’ve stayed in the southern suburbs (Rondebosch, Newlands, Claremont area) when I was a student and I quite like the area. In town, Gardens, Oranjezicht and Atlantic seaboard areas are quite nice but perhaps some of the priciest areas in the city. I like where I stay now in Bloubergstrand and I have some friends in Edgemead and Century city which are also good and safe areas. There’s a lot more places I haven’t experienced living in much yet like the Northern suburbs, false Bay Area and most of the peninsula. All the best with your move!

      @@KelsAcosta oh yes, the Coronavirus rules on international travel. When you come to Cape Town again, honestly, avoid areas with majorities of non white peoples because they tend to be townships or ghettos. I am Cape Coloured and I live deep in the Cape Flats and trust me, this is not a place for tourists. And another thing, public transportation is very dangerous (except for maybe the MyCiti bus which operates mainly in the city and surrounding areas) so avoid trains, mini bus taxis (the worst form of public transport available). Rather rent a car or Uber to get around. All in all, just use common sense and be aware of the things above and you'll most likely have a wonderful stay when you arrive 🙌 trust me, the city is beautiful and full of stuff to do.

    The reality that a lot of black people from upcountry don't get understand is that the Western Cape's (and therefore Cape Town's) demographics are not like the rest of SA: Black people are not in the majority here - it's Coloured people. Black tribes didn't migrate down past the Karoo because they didn't like the area - it was too arid/dry. Cape Town, therefore, has different people and a different culture. They don't feel comfortable with this and therefore they are displaying, yes, wait for it.... Racism. They don't like that they are in South Africa but don't have an "African" (Black) feel and it makes them uncomfortable.

    • @paullombard00
      @paullombard00 Рік тому +1

      Side-note: It's evident now that Cape Town is growing much faster than the rest of the country. People are "semi-grating" to the WC. Why? Because it's by FAR the best run, most efficient, cleanest province in the country. Why? Because it's DA-run - or at the very least; it's not run by the ANC. This also hurts a lot of sensitive , racist people.

They deny and look down on their black ancestry and basically do the racist dirty work for whites. As long as they work above blacks, they dont mind working under whites. I was born in cape town and have lived there my whole life. Thats the sad reality.

    Tourists take tours to sharks. They take tours to museums, to townships and to all other areas of Cape Town. How is that racist?
    Institutional racism from a country run by the ANC??

    get off your high horse on racism. You are just as racist for bringing it up. Different cultures exist in all different cities and places. If you don't like it get up, leave and go back to where you came from. WHY should the people that have lived there for hundreds of years change their ways for YOU!!!!
