The stock gearing for an RC car like this is built for an engine that can turn over 30k RPM. Looks like the max for the FS-L400 is around 13k RPM. If you made the ratio of that belt that connects the engine to the transmission something like 1:2.5 then it'll likely make the 3-speed transmission shift well because that's the expected input RPM range. It'll also get you more to within the expected speed range of that stock RC model.
For the clutch springs, I doubt you'll find springs like that but soft enough for the RPM range you need. I've seen some clutches that have holes in the shoes for a steel pin that can be inserted to increase the centrifugal force and make it engage at lower RPM. I guess you could also put the clutch on the driven side of the pulley too if you do the ratio change and then it'll work as-is because of the RPM increase.
Make sure to oil those air filters! They're pretty thin too probably want to consider a thicker setup.
Overall awesome build!
One more thing, if your radio doesn't have a built-in fail-safe then buy one. Nothing like going full throttle until the radio goes out of range (or battery dies or whatever) and having the servo just get stuck at full throttle. The fail-safe detects that the servo signal from the radio is lost and will command the servo to a preset position (ex. full brake).
Good Comment
I like this comment :)
Very good comment
Great comment
Superb comment
holy smokes that sounds outrageous!
If they make a NSX body that induction plenum would look really cool poking out the back window and above the roofline.
genius!!!
Damn good idea.
How about fuel consumption, is it more?

I feel like that’s on of the many positives of 3D printing. You can make it exactly how you want it.
Then you should go to Legoland.
@@theoneandonly7895 LoL
Yep usually takes a few good hits with a hammer and a whole lot with your fists.
JohnnyQ90 these engines will be more snappy, responsive, and overall more performance if the exhaust tubes or header manifold have larger tubing. Need to be larger than exhaust ports on heads. Being same size as ports will bog down the motor because of the extended length. Just like a automobile tubes are much larger than exhaust ports on head because it has to push exhaust gasses all the way out to rear bumper. Engine needs to breathe easy. Oversize is better than too small. I bet you would gain 10 to 15% performance maybe more. Awesome work you do and great craftsmanship. Videos are great work too.
Not 100% true mate. Oversize exhaust can rob smaller capacity engines of torque. Some back pressure is required. Large capacity engines like bigger V6's or V8's can def handle bigger pipes but smaller capacity engines for example high performance street bikes still use 1inch-1 1/2 tubes in order to allow the scavenging effect of the pipes to be maximised. I'm sure the builder has the experience to gauge the best size for his build. Cheers.
@@clubsport9334 backpressure has never increased power, it is scavenging that increases power. Properly tunes pipes that makes use of the pressure waves correctly improves the power, not backpressure.
@@sepg5084 So you just refused to read the part where they said "in order to allow the scavenging effect of the pipes to be maximised." ?
I'd argue against this I always go with small primaries to keep gas speed high and have always had great results. Rule of thumb is 1in is good for 100hp na. This doesn't really hold up with extremes like giant engines or tiny engines but certainly its close for everything in the car to motorcycle range.
There's a guy in Germany who is building race heads for these engines with bigger valves and stuff, his UA-cam channel is called timsane projects
Dem this rc have better sound than my daily motorcycle

Cool build. Motor sounds great. Very impressive. Definitely one of the best nitro builds I've seen. Can't get over how good it sounds

Watching a 3D printer doing its stuff is no where close to the fascination of watching you doing precision metal working.
Is there anybody with the least amount of intelligence that may dare to say that this car created itself or was put together *BY LUCK / BY CHANCE?* Seeing the Engineer working on it or not seeing him doesn't negate the fact that there is an Engineer behind the complicated process :).
A lot of plan to design and test until this work :))
Personally, I’d have made some fender flares and wide bodied the shell instead of narrowing the tire footprint.
Great workaround on your end though.

@@joeofloath yep, some negative/adjustable offset wheels would be perfect as well
@@joeofloath excuse me, they would need to be positive offset. So used to negative offset to fill out widebody, it just flew out of my fingers.
How about an old treadmill running machine as a rolling road dyno for testing and tuning?
Treadmill not fast enough
I’m reverting back to a kid when I retire. Hobbies were never this sophisticated when I was a kid.
I'm loving how deep the exhaust note is. Your videos are relaxing to watch. Thanks for sharing.
I think the fan should be automatic, with a microcontroller and thermocouple in the water loop.
Why have a separate microcontroller if you can just use a couple of analog components?
@@user2C47 You can easily program a fan curve. Maybe have the fan not run at all until a certain temperature. Though that would certainly also work.
make an alternator system to recharge the battery while engine running.. using a drone bldc motor and 3 phase rectifier and mini solar charge controller (because rpm and voltage fluctuating)
Absolutely awesome job. Love the filter solution. Great job, and what a beast
0:02 You know you watch this channel a lot when you see the exhaust pipes and you're first thought is "I remember when he made those" lol
That was my best UA-cam moment.
Hands down I will never forget.
Can't wait to see this unleashed in the open road. Breaks my heart watching it in the confinement... 😎
Agree
Very Nice!! Think about applying some reflective aluminium or Gold tape on the plastic box in front of the exhaust headers, to avoid plastic deformation due to heat during long runs ;)
You are like two of my favourite UA-cam channels rolled into one, Mechanic After Hours and My Mechanics! Absolutely love your content! - Subscribed :D
This thing is insane! Props to the builder 👍🏽
holy this sounds better then a sport bike good job!!!
do you check the temps of coolant or the engine itself? cooling it too hard could be bad for combustion in low end so maybe that playing a role ?
Wow, the sound of the engine is amazing ! Sounds like a race 4 cylinders motorcycle ! 🥰
Man If this was mass produced I’d be waiting outside the store like the iPhone guys
Looks and sounds great. Can’t wait to see it completed with the shell.
Amazing build!! And removing the engine fan gives it a little bit extra power
The complexity of this is mind blowing I really appreciate your work
that straight four let it sound like a angry 90s superbike... just awesome
He is a next level craftsman.
Should get an RX7 body for it, cuz it sounds like a 3-rotor 20B engine :D
I was just looking for this comment 🤣 sounds like a motorcycle engine too
Sounds like a 4 rotor to me
Me who don't know about engines : it sounds like brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Awesome video brother!!! I always test my machines in my backyard or my place before I take them anywhere I don’t think it’s lame I think it’s awesome you got it all figured out and working
That's an amazing build! Wish I had your patience and skill. I admire your work. Thanks
What a crazy detailed build
The cooling system is clever af, the whole thing is but that I didn't expect
Eh, the variable fan speed is a bit overkill and I'm confused as to why he didn't mount the radiator upside down so the hoses didn't cross over the battery but it certainly works
@@AiOinc1 That would put the mounting in a less compact frame, and it is already at the frontmost part of the chassis.
Johnny, if you read this message please I need you to try building an RC Torque Converter.
Those centrifugal clutches are terrible for rock crawlers. they engage at a very high RPM and its really hard to have control of the car when all you need is a subtle movement.
I think you have the knowledge and the tools to design and create a working torque converter that uses oil just like the real deal.
Obviously the efficiency on a torque converter is 90% at best, but this is useful for Off Road RC Cars. Which leads you to disregard the Lock-Up Clutch real converters use that make a 1:1 drive ratio to make that efficiency 100% at higher vehicle speeds. In the Hobby we don't need that. Just focus on a working torque converter and I am sure you will make one that works... Once installed you will see the difference it makes.
If you made it this far, I appreciate your reading into this!
I'm sure everyone will agree, those clicks when you install things are very satisfying. XD
Can't get enough of this channel, so creative, loving these RC videos !!!
If you struggle with coolant temps, I'm wondering if a small (let's say 5mm?) spacer between the fan and rad will help. You will struggle to pull heat from the centre of the rad because of the size of the fan centre hub 👍🏼. That thing is amazing too 🔥
That’s amazing, I’d give it a little more weight because of how much power and how well engineered it is. I know this is just base and your still adding. I mean adding weight for testing could help. Love what you’re doing hopefully you can build a completely miniaturized car in the future, but I guess fluid dynamics plays into that
The creativity and how neat the wires and build is, absolutely amazing
Did he just tease us all with a new engine at the end ??
Man i love these videos
use the bldc motor as an alternator or attach a small one, then u don't need to worry about your battery running out and then u can add some powerful lights to it as well!!!
Plus that battery is contributing to a huge percentage of the weight of the car.
This is what I call RC modelling at its best. 2-tumbs Up!!!!!!
Loving that exhaust note... beautiful!
Sounds and looks great Johnny hope we don't have to wait too long for the next video you can also make your videos longer if you'd like because we'll watch them
Bro u are a genius. I don't know how you do this👌
They managed to squeeze in the water cooling pump in THAT small engine?!
That car is insane! Always impressed of the builds you do!!
Wow, that little gem sounds nicer than a real Grand Prix car!
Awesome.
Glad to see it more or less completed and running now 💪
Some little concerns though:
Is the chassis stiff enough to withstand all this load without any reinforcement to stiffen it up?
The PETG box for the electronic can handle the heat from the exhaust pipes and won't melt after a long drive?
petg is kinda resistant to high temperatures
@@dmartinr41 nice
cool build! thank you for sharing. may I ask isn't it supposed to be called spark plugs rather than glow plugs? since it is gasoline? thanks 🙏
Just awesome! The future of RC is bright because of guys like you. Thank you!
This was absolutely incredible I enjoyed watching this so much put into my save category so I can watch it again and again
U have the little brass inserts on the steering servo mount in upside down
Dude, this is amazing. The sound of the engine is.. WOW
Multi-cylinder! Now THAT'S the way an RC should sound! Thank you for this.
Finally a RC that makes a real engine noise...
The car was revving so quick, i thought it was u saying woo hoo constantly in excitement. Lol
Meanwhile every other car manufacture is trying to switch to electric cars lol
Definitely worth the wait excellent workmanship and glad that you're okay. God bless you and keep them coming, if you want to put out a video of just driving that thing around I'll watch it. I love watching it that is one badass custom-built RC Corvette.😎
This is one of the coolest rc cars I've seen built. Very nice.
Let alone that it sounds fcking awesome
I love how this thing sounds and how much it's like a actual vehicle
Totally amazing. Great work. Can't wait to see it on the road!
your very skilled on that 3d printer, Edited. damn your good at a ton of stuff. 4 axis mini cnc mill, lathe, its non-stop. cannot believe how much expert time/machinery is on this. That little RC car is worth more than my first car 30 years ago.

Man this has been so cool to watch through the months! I bet you're going to be so proud when it's complete! Thanks for the content
fascinating build and perfect execution!
That little 4 cylinder sounds amazing!
Wow dude amazing vid you should build a futuristic hydrogen powered car
Out of curiosity how do you handle heat management? I noticed the headers directly next to if not touching the electronics box. Won't that melt the PETG? Genuinely just curious.
Nice one. Sound amazing. Love the pumping radiator and fan set up.
The fact that it sounds better than most Civics on the street
That's a pretty low bar. Even a great sounding civic sounds lame.
build pls hot rod with engine like this ✊🏿
You have a 3D printer! Why didn’t you just make a corvette body the size of your car?
RC body its build from thin plastic and flexible can absorb a little bit impact when crash.. 3D printer use for solid plastic creation and more weight abd not flexible at all
@@Sola_Scriptura. really? ua-cam.com/video/8O_PnAl6DbQ/v-deo.html. Please before you decide to think next time
@@Rameus lol next thing you'll ask is why he didnt 3d print the engine just because you saw it in some video.
@@Meepoify you got a good point there big baller! Thanks for the idea
Make sure you use the bottom hose of your radiator as the return! Your coolant pump and reservoir are almost at the same height, so if any air gets stuck in the radiator and you use the top hose as return, you risk pushing air into the pump and getting cavitation...
Also, time to build a RC Dyno! If you build it I will write the software for you, and we can finally get some real power band measurements!
One of the coolest RC ive seen.
Great work and full respect
I'd be worried about hitting something and fucking up the radiator.
Ok now this is cool and all, but I'm waiting to see a model gearbox on this thing!
Dang! This is some high level stuff.
Absolutely GORGEOUS keep up with the amazing art you do mate!!
You must be 1 of the best out there when it comes to small scale rc car engines and built.
Mechanical knowledge, it's a art that is not seen much anymore. Nice work sir.....
amazing build! your the only person to actually do instead of just talk talk talk. you are so gifted. thanks for this video
dude, it's freaking awesome. can't wait for the next test.
honestly i love the little spinning around on the roof top. It just does it for me :)
the fact it has ITBs is pretty dope.
I don't know why I love this video... its relaxing me.... and I wacth it carefully, if i miss something I just turn back your video... hahaha love it
Wow u got skills. You make the hobby pros companies look like they don’t know what they doing
Pretty cool. The printer would be AWESOME to have.
That's a Schumacher big 6 chassis...Nice...
Amazing quality! I was going to suggest using proline wheels and rubber street tires or drag slicks. My electric rc’s have so much torque and grip that they wheelie!
Sounds just like a mini 4 cylinder road race bike . Absolutely awesome.
That mini 4AGE has quite a presence on that chassis.
Sounds like a tiny super bike. Amazing.
A circuit that checks the coolant temp and moderates the fan would be amazing.
Did Not expect that awesome engine sound…
