1920s Label Paster [Restoration]

  • This restoration is on a 1920s Stikfast Label Paster made by The A.V. Ross Co. of Norwood, Ohio, USA. This tool seems to be fairly rare as there are only a few examples online and not much about the company that made it. The patent for it can be found here: patents.google.com/patent/US1...
The label paster top is copper plated for some reason, but the bottom is not. I do not know why. I really liked the look of copper, brass, and iron used in this machine. The brass components were stone-washed and lightly repaired. Some brass discs had cracks in them, but not large enough to affect the function of the tool.
I decided to get some practice on hand painting brass labels and took the time to do just that with the smallest brush I could find.
I feel like this tool would not be very practical since the glue in the bottom part would start to harden if it wasn't always being used. I also imagine that cleanup would be more time than it's worth.
It's nice to do some work on a smaller and less complicated tool after spending months on a chainsaw.
Wrenches are now for sale at www.handtoolrescue.com

I can see why not much is probably known about the company that made this. It’s such an impractical and messy tool! I can already feel the glue getting all over my hands and making the table sticky. Regardless, it is very important to preserve these tools as they give us a look at how creative people were to find solutions for problems

A post from Hand Tool Rescue! It's going to be a good day! The others do have one thing over HTR that he hasn’t been able to do. Others seem to be able to restore rusty plastic cases like rusty blue plastic Makita drills. HTR will never reach their level no matter how low they go. 😉

Am I alone in saying that the "simpler" restorations are the best to watch? I mean that its great to watch something like a 2 man chainsaw or the bandsaw (which I envy on a daily basis) being brought back to working life. It is astounding. Theres just a bit of something extra in giving tools like this, that would have likely been tossed in the trash due to convenience/cost when they were used a 2nd shot.
You are a wizard, my friend!

Awesome video as always! I have a pro tip for your bandsaw when you are cutting small objects, but the baseplate has a huge opening around the blade, as seen at 11:36 You can take a sacrificial wooden plate, cut it until it lines up with the rear of the baseplate, then put a pair of visegrips to hold it down. you can now cut the small pieces precisely since the sacrificial plate will provide support all the way in to the blade itself. :)

You have the most humorous content! I have another trick for you....how to extend the life of the plexiglass viewing panel on your sandblaster. Take a section of metal bug screen (you know, for a door or window). Needs to be metal for durability. Crumple it up, then straighten it out....not perfectly. You want those crinkles. Mount it to the inside of the plexiglass panel with some offsets so that there is about one inch of space between the screen and plexi. You can obviously see through the screen, but it helps to prevent blast media from hitting the plexi.

What I like most about you is the "no nonsense" restoration style. You get them fully functional and decently looking, but anyone can tell that's an old machine that's been restored. I'm not particularly fond of the "better than the original" all-round shiny as new restorations some other youtubers do, that diminishes the historical value i.m.o.
