1960s ACME Stapler [Restoration]

  • This tool restoration is on a model 27BC Acme Staple Co. stapler. The Acme Staple Co. is actually still in business today. This particular stapler is somewhat difficult to date as the aluminum castings contain reference to the Camden N.J. location where Acme Staple Co. was based out of from 1909-1959, but the metal label references the Franklin, N.H location where the company was based out of after 1959. I am going to assume this stapler was made around the time of the transition between the two locations.
The first design for this type of stapler was patented in 1934 and can be seen here: patents.google.com/patent/US2...
The restoration on this tool was fairly straight forward as no painting needed to be done. After disassembly all steel parts were de-rusted and the aluminum parts were sandblasted and then tumbled with fine media for a few hours to smooth out the look. The only stock removal I did was to smooth out any large dents or scratches on the aluminum parts that may have accumulated during years of use.
The stapler came with a few copper staples in it, so I was able to test it out once put back together. It's definitely a heavy duty stapler and I can see it being used to staple thin wood boxes together in the 1960s.
The stapler was donated to me by the Good of the Land UA-cam channel: / @thegoodoftheland
Information about the Good of the Land Fest: www.thegoodoftheland.com/fest
The steel-toe crocs were made by the I DID A THING UA-cam channel: / @ididathing

Hi! So very cool. I happen to be the customer operations manager at Acme Staple Company. This stapler was actually a roofing stapler. It was used to clip a particular type of shingle together. Loved seeing the acorn in there, and the note about the bronze bushings!
You have your company history right, and I agree this one hails from sometime during the early 60s.
When I started with the company in 1998, we still sold both the staplers and the staples.
Thanks for doing this. Excellent job!

That is one SOLID piece of kit. Everything, not just tools, looks SO much better without any plastic bits. After that tidy-up, that stapler could probably last another 70 years. Somehow, I can't imagine a restorer in 2089 attempting to restore "an old stapler from the 2010s".
Keep up the good work, I enjoy watching your stuff.

    Dougie.

    Where is the nutella? #bringnutellaback

There is (was?) shortage of Nutella recently due to strikes in the main factory. Could be the reason.

@@banmadabon wait, what? But the main factory that had strikes is located in France... wait a minute, are French frog eaters denying Italians (and rest of the world) their fair share of nutella?! That calls for revolution!!! WAR even!

@@PostAtariGeneration Maybe there are Nutella factory in France but the owner corporation is Italian (Ferrero), Don't worry for us we have subterranean stocks of Nutella to resist for years! So how do you use those hardness testers? Is it a certain sound you're listening for, or is it whichever one puts a scratch in the material?
