Since this is the theme song for the most complex, ambitious project ever done by a girl group it's worth checking out the lyrics and the symbolism embedded in the deceptively simple MV. Paint Me serves as an intro to 4 Season 4 Color and it presents the main themes, concepts and cyclical patterns used throughout the series and the color assigned to each member. Along with the cycle of seasons and the colors they've chosen to represent them the albums' title tracks explore four stages of love in a relationship cycle from Innocence to Attraction to Passion to Heartbreak, tho since the first album was released in the spring of 2018 they started with Attraction, the stage associated with Spring & Yellow, and cycled around to Winter/White and Innocence (or Unattached) as the project concluded at the end of winter in early March 2019. The lyrics also imply a life cycle from childhood to adolescence to adulthood and old age with a hint at the end of the MV that life is another repeating cycle via reincarnation. Like the painting they sing about there are lots of layers to the song, the MV and the 4S4C project.
The lyrics are very unusual for what seems to be a love song and I agree with the theory that the hidden subject of Paint Me is their relationship with music - their means of self-expression and the thing that brings meaning/color to their lives. One clue is the black & white pianos, the only recognizable solid objects in the whole MV. Note that they leave the initial white set (white = innocence, childhood, a blank slate) when the lid of Solar's piano becomes a window or a portal to the full color world in the clouds where the pianos reappear fitted together in a yin-yang formation. During the song they refer to 4 of the 5 senses (sight, touch, smell & taste) but not hearing, which implies that the four are metaphors for the sense not mentioned.
I don't think they went very deeply into Taoist 5 element color theory but I think that's another layer they touch on. They chose 4 of the 5 colors associated with the 5 elements (they only have 4 members after all) and I don't think it's a coincidence that the follow up album to the four 4S4C albums is called "reality in BLACK" - black is the 5 element color that was left out. BLACK is an acronym meaning Bless Life And Carry Knowledge. Black is referred to in the lyrics as the final color and is seen at the end of the MV as the final stage of a life that started with white/childhood. Note that they're in white dresses so after a life filled with color we seem to have moved on to a primal black & white zone representing the elemental forces of yin and yang. I think the lighting flashes in the final scene symbolize the spark of creation that generates a return to another life cycle via reincarnation.
Hope you found my blather food for thought rather than a bunch of nonsense. I might be overthinking Paint Me but if I am it's their fault. Nothing in an MV is there by accident and lyrics are meant to be interpreted by each of us in our own way. 😂

There is no such thing as overthinking! I love a good analysis, especially when the song and video and concept clearly calls for it :) Like you said, it's deceptively simple, but that's what most masterful things are; there's something deeper under the surface that keeps you hooked! I'm looking forward to seeing more of them. They just have a great presence and power, don't they? -Kay

@@finnishfriendsreact Glad you enjoyed the short version of my TED Talk on Paint Me, Kay. ;) Agree about simplification, which, when done well, allows the audience to engage the artwork creatively and fill in the blanks. The ringing of a few artfully chosen bells can stir our imagination and reverberate and resonate in a profound way.
Their presence and power is best experienced live. Last night I rewatched their 2017 Moosical Curtain Call concert and marveled at their command, presence and power from beginning to end and the diversity of their material in a 2 1/2 hr concert fairly early in their career. It was only the 5th solo concert they'd ever done. They held 4 debut concerts the previous year called Moosical. They were growing by leaps and bounds as artists and performers. Their next concerts in 2018 (the year Paint Me was released) were about an hour longer and they peaked with the jaw-dropping marathon 4+ hour long concerts in 2019 before the pandemic shut down their annual concert tours. Earlier this year my dreams came true and I was able to see their My Con concert twice when they toured the US. Hope they come to a city near you one day!

I had a period recently where I listened to this song over and over. It’s so good~~~
And I’m looking forward to when you get to Where Are We now, but it’s a bit too recent. 😹

So many songs, so little time. But we'll get to it eventually. Thank you for appreciating Mamamoo with us!

I dont understand how you can fully appreciate the music, visualizations, and symbolism if you have never seen the video before and you keep yammering on during the presentation.....

Hi, I don't think there's any way to fully comprehend everything from one viewing, no matter what one does! Mamamoo is fantastic and saying what comes to our mind while watching doesn't take away from that appreciation. Merry Christmas 🎄
