    Just a fun fact Şanlı means glorious which was added to the city's name after they didn't accept British and French occupation between 1918 and 1922 and kept attacking their soldiers until they pushed them out of their city!! In fact the statue you were visiting at 7:29 are the 12 leaders of Urfa who refused to accept occupation and organized the resistance, there are several more similar cities in the region like Gazi-antep/Ghazi-antep or Kahraman-maraş/Heroic-maraş as they pushed the invaders alone while in my city Adana we also resisted against French occupation but we couldn't push them out rather they left after they signed agreements with Turkey so no honorary title for us 😒😒
    Here is a video map of where they occupied and when they left:
    ua-cam.com/video/u9vCNFk2TPo/v-deo.html
    Also there is a sad fact about Şanlıurfa that there are almost 1 million Syrian refugees in the city which is the highest in Turkey so the city's actual population is around 3 million right now, you probably can't realize them but they were everywhere in your video working in shops or walking around such as that 5 people riding a bike were Syrian refugees and at 7:04 you can see a female refugee collecting paper and plastic!! They aren't doing well really as Turkey isn't a rich country which can take care all needs of 3.6 million Syrian refugees so the world should really do more for both finally ending the war in Syria and helping those people...

Antep is the capital of Turkish food when it comes to kebaps and baklava. There are millions of Syrian migrants in Turkey, most of the people walking around the city seemed Syrian. It's a very controversial topic in Turkey similar to the Mexican migrants story in the US. In Urfa alone there are nearly half a million Syrian migrants, most of them living in the city.

    that city has a big population of Syrian refugees hence all those Arabic writings. as for the Arabic letters on the monument the writing is still Turkish but belongs to Ottoman period at least it's dedicated to that period. Ottomans were using Arabic letters, it was Mustafa Ataturk who banned wringing in Arabic and switched the nation's writing to Latin instead.

  • @Places4u
    @Places4u 5 років тому +3

    I think what you thought was Arabic on that monument is just an old Turkish script.Turkey used to use the Arabic script but I think Ataturk the founder of New Turkey changed it to Latin.That been said I could see a lot of Arabic signage in the market and businesses and that seems due to the heavy presence of the Syrian refugee in that area.I could hear them in the background Speaking Arabic. Well, in Mexico you have a lot of Lebanese Arabs in Turkey they have a lot of Syrian ones... Lebanese and Syrians are basically the same people anyway. In Mexico you have Taco el Pastor (which cane with the Lebanese) in Turkey they have Doner Kebap which are basically the same things too. Monterey is much more developed than Sanliurfa though. 😁

    7:50 the text is written with arabic letters not because the city is close to syria. Its because the arabic caligraphy was used in the ottoman empire which existed until 1913. Later on they switched the official calygraphy into the alphabet. The language is still turkish in arabic letters or in alphabet.

    Just got back from a two week holiday in Turkey yesterday evening. This included 7 nights in Goreme but I finished the trip with a day in Kayseri which was a pleasant surprise. I liked the place even though most tourists and locals just raised their eyebrows and asked "why?" when I said I was going there. Kayseri city centre was nice, especially the old castle at night. The people there were also genuinely friendly and welcoming, not just trying to rope me in in order to sell me stuff.
