MIRACLES AND MOVING STATUES at Ballinspittle Shrine, County Cork. Paranormal activity in Ireland.

  • Today we're at the grotto just outside the small village of Ballinspittle, County Cork. Things may seem calm here now, but on the 22nd July in 1985 this place became the focus of attention for the whole of Ireland and indeed internationally.

Kathy O’Mahony, who was a caretaker to this shrine, was walking past here with her two daughters when they stopped to say a decade of the rosary. When they looked up at the statue they claimed to see it come alive. Mrs O’Mahony said she saw it breathing, while her two children claim to have seen her hands move. Later more people arrived and 13 people claim to have witnessed this event on that evening.
After that, word got around and over the next few months more than a quarter of a million people descended on the Shrine to Our Lady, shipped in in special coaches in the hope of seeing a miracle. The shrine was packed every night. It was reported that of every 10 people that came, 7 of them saw something.
It was claimed that one deaf lady’s hearing was restored after 33 years, while another lady said she saw the apparition and walked away without her walking stick that she’d previously needed. Another man suggested that seeing the miracle caused a paralysis that had resulted from a stroke some weeks before to totally disappear.
The Bishop of Cork at the time, Michael Murphy stated that “direct supernatural intervention in the affairs of man is a very rare occurrence”, and he advise caution. The Catholic church’s reaction to the event can been seen by the fact that the Bishop didn’t visit the site of the apparition himself. You’d think, given the importance placed on miracles in the church’s teaching that he’d want to be the first in line to see evidence of something that he clearly believes in? One thing is for sure, it didn’t do the economy of the village any harm. Every day the shops and pubs were full. Burger vans even sold ‘grotto burgers’.
The sightings at Ballinspittle however, were the tip of the iceburg, as from that point 1985 was gripped in religious supernatural frenzy, with reports of apparitions on an almost daily basis all over the country. The Catholic clergy, ironically, were clearly sceptical about all of the apparitions. They went on record as saying that “there was a danger that religion will be brought into disrepute”
What do you make of all this - could there be any truth? Or does this sort of thing just make Irish people look stupid and superstitious?

I was struck by the numerous roadside shrines I saw in Ireland on my first visit. We’d driven from Limerick to Cork using a very indirect route that took 10 days and avoiding all major roads, we saw many shrines tucked away in remote villages, as well as near towns etc. On later visits and indeed living there, I just ignored them as they were such a common sight. As for the apparitions, who can say what another sees. Personally, I would say some are fictious but that the original sighting and no doubt some of the others may have been real. There are more things in heaven and Earth than we know about. I keep an open mind to such things until I have proof one way or the other.
The other thing that struck me about Ireland was the grave stones on the side of the roads where people had lost their lives in accident, I though that was a very powerful message to drivers.

Yes I guess there are a lot of shrines, perhaps not as many as there used to be. Ireland is not as fervent a Catholic country as it once was.

@@nakedireland No, I noticed that when I lived there, not that I am religious myself.

Am reading Knox's History of Mayo again at the moment, always amazes me the sheer amount of Places St Patrick supposedly visited! Christianity was mixed in here with an Ancient Pagan Culture that is still in our Cultural Memory, I think there's bits of Christianity that are definitely open to interperetation as much as they are Monetization, Knock being a good example. I'll buy you a Pint if you say a Prayer to Our Lady :-)

I remember that year well. I was a company rep at the time and came across many crowds gathering around the many Immaculate Conception statues. My boss irreverently cautioned me to be vigilant as I travelled around the country in case I'd run over a 'moving statue' making its way across the road.

Ha ha, the statues were moving around so much in the 80s, it’s a miracle there’s any shrines left!

Ha ha, yeah I hope times have changed! It’s all a bit father Ted. People say they see miracles and the church doesn’t believe. I wonder if the irony of that is totally lost on them?
