- Part 1 of the new 2019 CRF450L. This is an introduction and a very short video of the bike. Stay tuned and subscribe as I will be uploading an upcoming set of videos dedicated to a full review of this bike.
This is one of the first few 2019 Honda CRF450L’s to be equipped with aftermarket Vortex ECU and full exhaust system.

This bike is so beautiful... I paused the video to just stare at it...
Awesome looking and sounding CRF450L. Vortex is not 100% about power but how the power is delivered with a gain in HP and TQ as a bonus. Poway Powersports is phenomenal to deal with. Got my KTM 500 from Dustin and my first new bike purchase in 20+ years was perfect. I am doing the Vortex shortly and hope it does just as well as the Honda. Ride safe.
The vortex is 100% worth it. You will love your 500 even more after you install it.
I run that pipe on my DR-Z 400SM and its awesome. Power from bottom to top. Worth the money.
Damn what a bike! Woohoo! Thank you HONDA!🙏
Another vote for more 450L vids!
Thanks for the review and info. Very cool. The 500 exc is a pretty powerful bike and can be modes to be even more so. What is it about this one that makes it more appealing other than it obviously being the best looking ? 👍
To me its the entire chassis feel. The 500 is such a great bike, KTM really did amazing, I cant say much bad about it. Its more preference, I love the way the chassis and motor on the 450L work together, its very manageable everywhere, in all riding conditions, also gives me ergonomics that suit my riding style. In all you cant go wrong with either, I just enjoyed riding the L and saw no reason to keep both.
@@ridendrive Thanks so much for the thorough and honest response. That is exactly what I was hoping to hear. I need something reliable, user friendly, and capable. It is a stunning bike to look at. Was also waiting to see if the performance and lean fueling was adjustable, and you answered that. Thanks for the heads-up on where to get that
Looking forward to a ride review...
Multiple parts coming soon. Should have Part 2 out this week.
Great Bike! The 28mm handlebar is intriguing, which Renthal bend you installed?
OEM Honda Bend
Wally, Nice Bike! Do you remember the settings you ended up with on your ECU? I have ordered a Vortex X-10 also. Thanks. Is it 555 and 1 on the map?
Thanks. I ended up having Twisted Development remap the ECU as the provided maps left some areas to be improved. I suggest contacting twisted development
What size tire do you have on the front and rear? Thinking about going with the same setup. Sharp bike man.
I'm running same ecu exhaust and handguards, plus fastway 4 pegs. Your bike looks awesome. What kind of frame guards are those?
Acerbis
May I ask what setting you like best on the ECU sir?
Anxiously awaiting the follow up video to this...
Will be up by the weekend.
Can't wait til these start popping up used lol
I doubt they will since they are more fun to ride and more powerful than the 250l.
Reason for so many 250l on the marked is that it lacks power. Also the 450l looks 10x cooler
@@elguitarTom i have a 250L lmao and you're not wrong about any of that.
huffingfarts the 250l is a good bike tho
@@joeyt6547 it is, i love my 250L. My first motorcycle. Just wish it was lighter and had more power for the highway.
250L is fantastic on state land 2 tracks, dirt roads, trails and in town.
However, there is almost no passing power when you get above 55mph, which makes me want to take back roads with no traffic.
huffingfarts I probably won’t take my 250l on the highway
I love you for making this video (no homo 😂). I bought that bike 3 days ago new and i noticed how lean it runs. Got 330 miles so far. Has the ecu work eliminated the on off throttle issue???
Hi what do you mean "uncorked"? did you modify the airbox? thanks!
Uncorked was my word for opened up, all restrictions removed and the bike running as best as possible with least restriction.
@@ridendrive how do you like the bike now if you've still got it after nearly two years?
@@t_tsering still have it, 165 hours on the bike. I absolutely love it. Frankly I think it is an amazing machine, it has been flawless and outside of basic maintenance, oil/filter, air filter, etc it has not needed a damn thing. I highly recommend the 450L.
Those hand guards are sick.
so you would say that this Honda 450L is a better bike than the KTM 500exc? what do you mean by better and for what purposes are we speaking of? classic dual sport? plated bike that can run single track? would love to hear another video and comparison between the two.
Yes I would also like to know. Also he said he came off a KTM, what year?
Video coming next week
Not to give you a hard time but the smog kit is still on the bike. That's what that metal monstrosity is on the right side of the cylinder.
MrClean67 I’d love more detailed info on how to safely remove that junk
How's the engine vibe vs the 500 KTM? What year KTM, btw?
Can't wait for the 450 rally to come out.
I love the way rally bikes look. But honestly, that windshield comes in handy pretty often on the coastline over here.
Do you think I should put my Yoshi and Vortex in during the break in period on my 22?
Hey. Looks amazing. Sounds great. What pipe exactly is that? Is it for the crf450x or crf450rx? This is the model I have in my shopping cart from Tokyo mods. CRF450X 2019 RS-4 FS SS-AL-CF
David Shebabe was the choice a good part number? How was the fitment? Power commander too? Thanks
www.vortexcdi.com/model_product.php?product=56&model=271&mp_id=4273&flag=1
Nice!
Which Acerbis frame protectors are those?
They look like a perfect fit
CRF450R
Did you have to modify those frame guards to fit? I think they are crf450r if I’m not mistaken
Please dyno and keep us updated. I have an fe 501 with a lot of mods, got two more things to do and then I'll dyno it and try to do a youtube clip
I have a crf450L and I was wondering what the smog delete actually does for the bike? Just wondering if it will affect anything? I have a fmf full exhaust and tuner on it all ready. Thank you I would really appreciate your input! I can’t find anything on what it actually does for the bike!
It allows the excess exhaust gasses and fuel to vent to atmosphere as opposed to being recycled into the atmosphere. It also modifies the water pump and removes the cooling restrictions caused by this. It stops the popping sound on deceleration and helps response of the motor. It's a must do item.
Did it make it louder? Does it just FEEL more powerful because it is louder? Did you dyno it or just use your ears to judge it?
I had installed a Yoshimura system on my 450l without a new ECU. I knew not to ride the bike much because of the lean fuel ratio and obviously without proper fueling a HP gain if any would be minimal. I will say though that the bike was not as enjoyable to ride as it was too loud for my liking.
@Wally what frame guards are those? Did you have to modify them to fit?
Great video! Has part 2 come out yet?
Please ride it Please dyno it Please continue to do so while you add tasteful power mods and integrate them cleanly and properly unlike so so many people lol.
Are those frame guards for the 450R? If so, how do they fit? Any modification needed? Thanks...
Dude, how much money should I spend for the exact mods, specially for the ECU and the Exhaust. Thanks in advance.
Got mine last week, 15 miles on it now. Had two stall outs at a light, took a second or two to restart, will this issue go away with vortex tuner? Also, what hand guards are you running? Thanks
Just got mine today 0 Zero miles on it ... Noticed it does stall little bit & a bit of smoke as well the dealer (shop guy) told me to expect a little smoke for break in ... Just was wondering about the stalling?
I assume yours went away ?
After break in ... At first I reached down thinking I could adjust the idol ... NOPE
@@ericems2 I just got my 450L yesterday. It likes when you give it gas. even with the clutch pulled in. I love mine but it is a tiny bit jerky. MORE GAS
how do u like it looking forward to e ktm exc 450/500 or a wr 450 which ine should invet i just don like any issues with it thanks a lot
Just bought mine today ...
Fkn stoked ✌️
Leaving the dealer with it Monday! Can't WAIT;
Ryan Thibodeau Congrats buddy 🙏
What tires do you have and are they ok on the road?
What frame guards are you using. I cant find any for the L or X
I just installed my ecu and haven't rode it.. Seems to run so much better now. I can't wait to try it
How would you rate this bike in handling characteristics compared to the exc? I know there's some weight differences between the two and I'm leaning towards the 450L . Thanks
I find the Honda to be more compliant of a chassis. I touch on this on part 2 (which is short), however I find that its a bit of a preference. For me I have the 450L and plan to do a lot of riding, alot of the rides being very long. I find the Honda Chassis and Geometry more suited for me personally in this regard despite my past 5 years on KTM and Husqvarna bikes. I don't think you can really go wrong. Weight wise the Honda does feel a touch heavier at slow speeds, but anything over 10mph I cant tell the difference in weight. The honda power is much more manageable through a wide range of terrain, where i find the 500 exc more than needed at times.
is the yoshi pipe too loud for road use like everybody suggests in the forums?
Not in my opinion. I enjoy it
So what about mileage did you lose a lot of mileage doing the mods
How many HP has your bike in stock? There are versions for US market and EU market. US more power and EU less power. How this mods runs with this EU bikes?
Contact Vortex for that information
What tires you got on there, what does that ECU does it tune it to more MX style?
Golden Tyre. ECU basically cleans up everything, runs smooth. Not MX style.
So clean. I'm sure you love the yellow accents but I'd personally delete em lol 10/10 bike 🔥
Did you loose much bottom end torque when you removed the stock pipe?
Gained in all areas.
What map and fuel settings did you use?
Where did you get the frame/heel guards from? Are they specific to the L or will an X/R version fit?
Nick Hants revzilla
So you like this more than the 500Exc?
For me, Yes.
How many miles or hours do you have on it? How often do the valves move if at all?
I dont have too many hours/miles. Only 20 hours and 600 miles. But I have friends with over 100 hours on them, they have yet to do anything other than, oil and air filters.
Beautiful bike
You like better than the KTM?
Changing the stock pipe will only give you louder sound and less weight. But it will dampen the engine performance.
The engine is made for the stock pipe. You just it runs better due to the sound. Trust me. I tried the same with my 250l.
Best way is to test it up a steep hill: it runs better with stock pipe and muffler. More power.
Without looking, how are the matainance schedules?
Same as the dirtbikes according to the manual, whether you follow that is up to you.
I live in europe so we maybe have a diferent engine configuration due to country laws to make it legal....
As much as i understood.... For the bike in stock form:
Oil filter and oil change every 1000km (600 miles)
Air filter change/clean every 1000km (600 miles)
"Big engine service" - Engine rebuild i asume - every 32.000km (20.000 miles)
I hope it helped
so nice !
This is my dream bike.....
gorgeous
lightly modded XR650R supermoto for the win and half the price!
I had that... I sold it for a 500exc. The fuel injection and e-start are worth it alone.
Im sure you supermoto does great in the desert and trails
What is the advantage of a vortex ECU versus a power commander 5?
More control over the bike modules, no tapping wiring, stand alone system.
@@ridendrive It seems like you have more control with a power commander with fuel mixture ratio, where cortex ecu is fixed
My opinion is that a good tune is a good tune. Vortex has provided 9 maps for you to choose from, all have extensive R&D and work extremely well. I see no reason to need to make further adjustments outside of the fully adjustable fuel and mixture knobs on the ECU for you to adjust as need and at your disposal.
Power commander is just a piggyback fuel tuner. Vortex is fuel and ignition timing. Vortex is better. And the vortex has 10 preloaded maps. And with the vortex you can get a map switch to change between the all around best power map and any of the 9 other maps.
@@DmenDuroRider can similar results be achieved with power commander and custom Dyno tune?
Vortex Might be a good idea But the problem is not compatible with Honda Diagnostic protocol So you do lose a lot of Features from the factory I think they Kind of lacked on that part for such a spensive ECU Bomber
Could you be more specific which feature you are referencing. For the moment, the only feature that the Vortex currently doesn't utilize is fuel used. That will be coming in future updates. Other then that everything seems to function correctly, but maybe i'm not understanding what you are referencing.
What I mean is if the bike has something wrong with this system The only way you can get a Diagnostic code is switching back to the stock ECU Therefore you're not able to scan a Code of malfunctioning with the vortex The little red plug underneath the seat It's pointless For scanner You won't be able to get readings for rpm, tps, gps Engine temperature ,air temperature and so on That's why I said vortex is not compatible with Honda Diagnostic protocol
I bought the vortex And I also bought The 12 o'clock lab mini gauge So I can use it as a tachometer And be able to read the gear the bike is on when I'm Riding But unfortunately I won't be able to use them both at the same time Because 12 o'clock labs Made the module specifically to run of the Honda Diagnostic plug So that's why I'm a little bomout that vortex didn't spend enough time to make it work with the Honda system instead is running on their own system It wont work for me Therefore I'm sticking with my setup I have right now fuel controller booster plug I'll be selling the vortex Because I care about the engine's life And I can monitor with the Mini gauge is more important than hp👍
@@adrian1978mo Yeah I could disagree more, but to each their own. The vortex runs the motor in a far safer, more reliable manner than any Fuel Controller or Piggy back device. I am not concerned with actively seeing RPM, dirt bikes in the last 3 decades have never needed, nor had RPM gauges under 500cc. If you desire that a simple addition of a Trail Tech GPS combo would do all that plus some while keeping the vortex for proper fueling.
With my set up I dyno 45.5@hp+32.lb torque That's more than enough for me plus I can use the mini gauge it has everything you need to know about the engine's health and monitor on the go
very interested in a dyno
What tires are you running?
Golden Tyre GT216AA Fatty up front and GT333N in the rear
Crazy that you need mods for a $10300 bike! Or is this overkill ??
Brian Lehr not sure why it’s crazy. Whether it be this Honda, ktm, Husqvarna, they are all heavily restricted from factory and frankly the ktm stock is far worse in how it runs. That said almost anything delivered as a dual sport under 500cc is going to require, ECU or flash, proper tires, fender clean up, etc. I think for the amount of extras you get on Honda for 10,300 is a bargain with what’s out in the current marketplace
Lol you should see how much I dumped into my 2017 excf. Vortex ecu with map switch, aftermarket slip on pipe, bigger fuel rail and larger diameter tank fitting, intake tube to replace reeds in air intake, new exhaust manifold, flywheel weight, smog delete kit, and a ton of "farkles". All in all it was about 2500-3000$ in parts on top of the $12000 msrp. To me it was worth every penny.
Yea guys who have raced in the past are used to buying a 8 to 10k bike new and then dumping another 5 to 10k into it to be competitive. It's nice that nowadays bikes come with better power and suspension from the factory.
Flywheel weight ?
I just bought a slightly used '17 500 EXC-F, myself. I'd like to add some flywheel weight, if possible, but I don't want to add weight to the clutch pressure plate, as I've seen.
Did you find a product that adds weight to the flywheel itself ?
@@linguinatorschwartz9309 ktmandhusky.com has a flywheel weight. Goes on the clutch. I don't notice a difference with the clutch. Just harder to stall. They have one that requires a new clutch cover or a smaller one that works with the factory cover.
I am going to sub hopefully to see more videos of this bike
Why not for 2 passager??
What’s the black covering on the forks?
AA RON carbon fork guard covers
Wally Rides love. Where may I purchase? And thanks for reply
a lot of people are saying the new honda is a drz/wr/ killer but this is not true at all. the reason is the price tag, the available mods and the legacy of those 2 bikes i doubt suzuki will make any changes to the drz400 for at least 5 more years.
my problem with the crf450l is the size and the price. i have a 31-32 inch inseam, so its hard enough as a road bike but on the trail the BIKE STALLs! this causes me to take 100% of the weight on only 3 toes! come on honda why didnt you tune this correctly before shipping it out!
blueridgeocean I still haven’t moded mine and you only need to get better at riding. This bike rips. Blame Europe and America for the lean tuning not Honda. Bigger the company stricter the rules.
Are you going to actually ride it in part 2 video?
Yes
Where did you get the frame covers please?
Revzilla
sweet!
are these frame guards the same as a 450R?
Yes
😍
Have fun changing the valves in the garage every Sunday.
Is there a smog eliminator kit available yet?
Yes, contact Tokyo Mods
Street legal canister?
JoJo Brooks Shifflett yes
Is there a specific map to use with the yosh exhaust?
Yes, the ECU includes multiple maps for both the Yoshimura and FMF systems.
How do you select a map? Excuse my ignorance, this is all new to me.
@@mikemooch7719 No issue, thats why I made these videos is to help with these questions. On the ECU itself is a dial adjuster for maps, fueling etc. You can simple turn the dial to number associated with the map you want and that's it. Literally 2 seconds and you are on your way. Tokyo Mods is the company you will want to contact to get the bike specific ECU from.
Awesome, thanks! I've been waiting since October for a tuner so i can safely run an exhaust with no issues.
How much was the mods
Very nice 👌🏾😁
Genuine brapper 👍🏻
Can u pass inspection with ecu and exaugust
No inspections so no idea
I just bought the 450l and im thinking of changing my exhaust sytstem. Do i have to dyno or install a power commander on the bike?
Chase Gray if you want to gain the full benefit from the exhaust then you need some type of ignition/fuel tuning
For $11k then having to uncork it spending even more money, you could get a Husqvarna 701 for $12k and not have to do any of that. Better yet get a DRZ400 and have the same power for $7k or but used and spend $3k with tons of aftermarket parts and proven reliability. Honda needs to step their game up.
Louie Watson this comment is so over used and completely false. I own a KTM 500, I’ve had a husky 501, absolutely NONE of these bikes are running as most would consider “proper” out of the box. All come corked up, lean running, with all the garbage to meet requirements. The CRF450L has proven to be one of the best out of the box chassis. Most real buyers understand this and are absolutely fine with the requirements as they would likely do these changes regardless to meet there upgrades.
I hate to ask this question: So, is it legal?
Should be. He even got legal turn blinkers. I opted out for an integrated stop light with blinkers, which is illegal in California, but no one seems to care yet...
DYNO ✅
Makes me want to buy a DRZ400...install a rekluse and leave stock highway gearing...done and done...might even have enough money left over to afford retirement ;)
Is the yoshimura rs4?
Yes

That's sounds like a chain saw. 😮

I agree with everything except that it isn’t a true dual sport. It’s a dirt bike with a plate, horn and turn signals. It’s a great bike. But it’s not a true dual sport. It’s a dirt bike
What do you consider a true dual sport and why?
Wally Rides I appreciate being given the opportunity to explain my theory instead of being immediately attacked for that statement.
Firstly I can fully admit that all dual sports have a bias towards a given end of the dual sport spectrum.
People tend to say the XR650L is geared more towards off road and that the DR650 is more street oriented. Out of the box I’d agree but you can set up either to do either well.
But it’s more than that.
Coming from someone who owns both a dual sport and a proper dirt bike I will say that maintenance intervals play a huge roll in what a dual sport is. Valve checks every 20 hours or so or oil changes every 600 miles does not fit a true dual sporters lifestyle. A dual sport is much simpler than that. Less is more if you get my drift.
Weight also plays a roll. There’s a reason conventional dual sports are heavier than dirt bikes. I wouldn’t want to run a 230 pound motorcycle down the highway. Weight creates stability. They might be cumbersome off road but they’re designed to appease two different segments.. which makes it not particularly good at any one thing.
I have no brand loyalty.. but what the world needed was a modern day DRZ. Everyone wanted a midsized thumper that was more modern than the DRZ and Honda only partially delivered. They based it off an existing platform of the 450x. They’re not competing in the dual sport market.. they’re competing with the European plated dirt bike market. KTM, Husky, Beta, Sherco.. all have plateable dirt bikes complete with all the switchgear. All with busy maintenance schedules and on a platform that isn’t ideal for a true 50/50 dual sport. The 250L is more of a dual sport than the 450L is. 10,000 mile oil changes stated in the manual. You could be gone weeks at a time and not have to do a damn thing to service it. Not that I would recommend it.. but it’s the point that it’s even stated in the manual. Sucks at a lot of things otherwise but that’s why it’s a dual sport.. it’s not partially good at any one thing. But it’ll run... forever
That exhaust wont last long
Is your voice wierd to you?
VERY!!. Camera turns on and weird things happen.
Looks pretty just like a girl’s bike should
Stir It Up it grabs my pussy harder than trump at a miss America competition
Let’s see, $700 vortex ecu plus a $900 full Yoshimura system (guess) and you wind up with a loud bike with 8 more hp that is illegal to run on the road.
ILLEGAL to run on the road? maybe in your non american shithole. they dont enfore exhaust regs in america.
and no cali isnt america thats a shithole
What is the point of this comment? All i gathered is you were able to find the MSRP of the products and make assumptions? Are you the troll going to every youtube page showing bike modifications and breakdown the parts costs and let them know the legality?
Rod Z may I ask why it’s illegal? Sorry I live in Australia 🇦🇺
Sorry for coming off as a fn troll. I installed a Yoshimura titanium exhaust on my 450l and instantly regretted it. Ultimately I should have waited but I was in hurry to boost the hp to as close to the R models hp as I could get without major modifications. Stating the obvious, the Vortex ECU is the best option for fueling the bike and yes I considered it. They state the ECU is for competition/off road use only. Now, the aftermarket exhaust systems are also for off-road use only as well as I’m gusessing they do not meet noise requirements and may lack a spark arrestor. Anyway, sorry again for sounding like a prick. I’m just saying that for the moderate gain in HP, the price does not make sense to me. One more thing, my Yoshimura system is for sale. :)
Have fun on your bikes.
Hey there, name name. Careful there -- I used to live in that communist shithole. Of course I moved away to Texas and I'll never go back -- except to go riding in Death Valley -- and the gov't there truly is a bunch of micro-managing, meddlesome, controlling, thieving, jackbooted fascists . . . so I guess I don't really care if you call that communist shithole a shithole.
Carry on.
Beautiful but tooooo expensive. My KLR works just fine
Everything is expensive. This bike in right in line with the competition.
Sounds like someone starting a chainsaw.
