Irene was the perfect choice for the role of Daisy Mae Moses (Granny). Her portrayal of a cantankerous mother-in-law could have been less than likable but Irene gave the character just the right amount of warmth and sensitivity to perfectly balance the orneriness, making Granny irascible yet beloved. She lent a great deal of heart to The Beverly Hillbillies. A truly wonderful bit of acting by Irene.
I have the honour of making the first comment. Irene Ryan was absolutely brilliant as granny; just a wonderful actress who brought so much joy and laughter to this troubled world. Goodnight Irene.
Irene Ryan is responsible for creating one of the most memorable and beloved characters in TV history. It's a shame she doesn't have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame because she certainly deserves it.
She was a genius. To carry the accent flawlessly, along with the lines in the script, the voice tone, the character personna...she was brilliant. My family is from Buchannon and Clay West Virginia. We loved the Beverly Hillbillies. And you know...I know of not one single person from the hills that got offended, and screamed "stereotype!" . That shows the difference between folks seeing reality from fiction comedy while the whiners bitch just to hear themselves rattle on.
I grew up with the Beverly Hillbillies in 1960s Australia. I'm currently watching the series from the beginning on Prime, it's quite the nostalgia trip. I'd forgotten just how funny it was, and a lot of that is down to Irene's flawless portrayal of Granny. That lady was absolutely hilarious in terms of both her physicality and vocal delivery, and she's so good in that role that you forget she's acting. The entire cast is superb, there are no weak links. Raymond Bailey (Milburn Drysdale) is another of my fave cast members. He never got enough recognition for his contribution, imho. A very funny and talented man.
Bea Benadaret (Pearl on the Beverly Hillbillies) also auditioned for the role of "Granny"-however when she saw Irene Ryan's audition she told series creator Paul Henning--"You found your Granny" Max Baer Jr. came to the studio to audition for Jethro but was incredibly nervous. Irene Ryan took him out to lunch and essentially got him drunk and when he came back for his audition he was so calm and convincing he won the role of Jethro
According to Paul Henning, who was friends with Bea Benadaret (he wrote for Burns and Allen, so their association went back at least that far), he thought she was too buxom to play Granny. But he still wanted her on the show so he created the character Pearl.
Irene Ryan and Buddy Ebsen pulled off the two best character portrayals I've seen in entertainment. These two as Jed Clampett and Granny were astonishing! You actually believed that they were these Ozark mountain people! I'm a 54 year old black man who grew up in the inner city watching the Beverly Hillbillies daily. I still watch it almost everyday. I love it and The Andy Griffith show! These shows just give me a good feeling. They allow me to escape all the turmoil, division, fighting, and hatred going on in our society now.
God bless you, my friend. I'm 55, white as fresh snow, and feel the exact same way. I also watch Andy, F-troop, Green Acres, and other shows from back then. I love the Jeffersons, Cheers, etc. All for the same reasons; because they give me something to laugh at in an increasingly wicked world. I'm watching Perfect Strangers as I write this!!! I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way about the older shows. They're better than anything today! My Best Wishes to you and your family.
Granny really grew on me. I wasn`t a fan at first but I sure loved her after a few shows. My favorite was when she went to the race track to scold Jed and Don Rickels about the evils of gambling and wound-up betting. Also liked her granny boots!
Irene Ryan has to be the best actress of all time. I rewind many of her scenes to re-watch them over and over again and I laugh every time no matter how many times I watch her scenes in a row.
She was on the Virginia Graham show in the 1960's, and told the host that playing Granny was the easiest and best paying job she had in show business, "Two and a half days every week and I was in and out," said Miss Ryan.
After 25,101 views you're the first to point that out. Actually her name was Daisy Moses but if I used that name in the title nobody would know who I was talking about. Thanks for watching.
"It ain't her shoulders that's a-poppin' them buttons..." Dear God, I truly almost fell out of my chair laughing.... what a perfect delivery!
She was the best. Very witty.

She was a treasure.
She was the only person that could've played granny and she did it to perfection
Originally Bea Benederette ~Pearl ~ was supposed to be Granny I hear
I have the honour of making the first comment.

Love your comment ! So well said and so well put ! :-)
She drove Mrs. Drysdale up the wall!!

I didn't know that story, but it doesn't surprise me. Irene seemed to have quite the zest for life!

Great writing in the show, she was a natural for granny

Yep, and all the worlds mess has gotten even worse, as everyone knows!

She was always sippin on that Rumatiz Medicine!
I've seen Her in a few old Movies!
Love her. She was my fav!
The pilot of Beverly hillbillies was hilarious
Granny always had the good stuff
I thought she was going to say if the producers hired anyone older they wouldn't be able to handle the physical requirements of the role.
Women like her I adore

I've been to her crypt.
Viva La Granny 💛💚💙💜⚘⚘⚘⚘
Her name was Granny Moses or Daisy Moses, not Granny Clampett.
She was Jedd's mother in law. His mother would have been Granny Clampett. Not a big deal but she is Granny Moses.
Granny with a shotgun lol
Thanks for posting!
I totally agree ! This is one short but sweet video ! :-)
Like too see the rest of this video any info on where it is
"Well, Jed ... I'll just have to have a cup of my rhumetiz medicine".
First of all her name on the show was not granny Clampett it was granny Moses
After 25,101 views you're the first to point that out. Actually her name was Daisy Moses but if I used that name in the title nobody would know who I was talking about. Thanks for watching.
The glasses do not a Granny make. The actual ones for the series were better looking.
Why so short? I was just getting interested and bam! Like the book of Jonah...
ok,,, where's the rest of the video?
That's all I have, sorry. The rest might be elsewhere on YT or it is probably under copyright.
I heard she could leave the set after filming sans makeup and walk right past autograph seekers without being recognized.
Grannies last name wasn't Clampett it was Moses,Jed Clampett was her son in law.
Her full name was Daisy Moses but if I used that name in the title nobody would know who I was talking about. Thanks for watching.
I would have liked Granny Moses to be my Grandmother
I would've liked to try some of her "Rheumatis" medicine.🤤😋😜
