Damn, I thought "26 min long for a lesson on UV unwrapping, it will be boring as hell" and then, 26min later I was like "what !?! it's already over ?". Thanks to teach me how wrong i was. That's what i call some quality course.
I'm starting to realize how much finding seams on objects is just like finding seams on clothes. Clothes are essentially made by taking a 2D pieces of fabric and stitching them together by the seams to create clothing that can fit over a 3D object. Probably not a bad way to get an idea of how seams should be placed.
Hands down the most helpful UV Unwraping video I have watched in the last two years.... And I have watched pretty much them all. Thank you for this video.
I never, ever leave comments under UA-cam videos, but this tutorial has solved SO MANY of the problems I've run into while learning UV Unwrapping. You're a savior!
This tutorial is one of the best educational and well-expressed video among the others in YT. It is so clear and also detailed. Thanks for this amazing tutorial. I have learned a lot :)
Yes, Jonathan is very good in teaching. Let the power be with him on this way! It's kind of extremely useful and condensed content, a pleasure to consume. Thanks.
This is pure gold. UV/Unwrapping can be daunting, but Jonathan showed how simple it can be with these few and simple tips. Thank you CG Cookie and Jonathan!
I actually didn't see any words to say, that's very good, I didn't get ample explanation from tutorials like this, thank you very much you helped me in some way, please give us more tips and tricks we are learning a lot from you. May God guide you to the right path.
Thanks! Now I have to uv-unwrap, because it's actually fun! Joke aside, thanks for this video. Cleared up some of the Blender uv-mapping mystery I struggled with.
Very good tutorial. Bad UVs are VERY prevalent. Even a lot of AAA game companies are guilty of some embarrassingly shoddy UV work. A bad UV can make your entire surface/material look unclean and yucky in an almost indescribable way. Keeping consistent scaling and proper alignment is HUGE and makes sure your texture work shines.
I can kinda forgive some rough UVs in AAA games with how rushed their devs can be. You'd be more aiming for 'passable' so you can move on to the next asset lol.
Man! This is one of the best unwrapping tutorials! You really know how to explain thing fast and simple. Big thanks, i learned a few really cool things.
amazing stuff, a lot of the information here is also applicable to many other software apart from blender, this feels like it should be part of a paid course / degree. thanks so much for sharing
Just learning to straighten the edges on an island is something I never knew but would have saved me hundreds or even thousands of hours of manually doing that, edge by edge, over the years. Thanks!
Can I just say... I was already learning a ton but I've basically given up on learning how to properly use seams. YOUR TUT JUST FIXED THAT. I can't believe how well organized the info and your process is here, thank you so so so so much!
there are not enough worlds to say thank you enough! I will definitely be buying any relevant classes for me that I can! you are great! (I usually find this stuff really hard, but recently I realized its just about finding the right teachers for me!) thank you!
Excellent tutorial!! I mean spy on. You show, show alternate, reason why and then explain further… but very easy to watch and take in with this example. Natural tutor for sure 👍
Finally going back to finish my Pothead project that I bought some time ago. I had no idea this was here. While the character is based on simple shapes, it's taken me a couple of tries to get it and this helps a bunch.
One of the most usefull and well explaned tuto on this topic. Just a shame UV Packer and UV PacMaster do not work with Mac. UV PacMaster will release a version for Mac in the near futur.... Thanks a lot
Being able to see how the UV stretches with the grid as you unwrap is incredibly useful. I've always been doing it blind and it's always frustrating to see that you didn't get the results you were expecting when you switch over to the uv editor.
Coming from a Maya background here and was wondering about how to do similar things in Blender. Great video, thanks a lot! Will definitely be coming back to this as I move forward learning how to make the shift to Blender.
This tutorial has totally reframed my view on UV unwapping. I was really struggling to deal with Blender's UV unwrapping system after coming from a different 3d modelling program and this one video has changed the game on that. Thank you!
The best tutorial I've found on UA-cam for UV unwrapping. The explanation is not too complicated, so as being a beginner in blender, that was quite easy for me to understand perfectly where to mark seams on the model and the importance of them. Nice video, subscribed)
learned a few things new to the uv unwrapping ( pin and active quads ). Never knew i could use that, tho i had used that in other uv unwrapping tools without realizing it was doing that. Also the packing and unpacking was new. Thanks for the tutorial.
You are a genius, man! You answered all the questions I was looking for on how to unwrap in blender, and then some. And I like your sweater- I wanna be like you when I grow up.
after years of skratching my head and try to understand the logic in blender sometime i now love Play with the UV unwraping. I still struggle to understnad the logic with the shader nodes though, i often find my self lost and have to go back to favorite youtube videos to remind myself how to think and do!
Just getting back into 3D after over a decade away. Learning Blender in the process... and this video was tremendously helpful. All excellent tips. Will definitely be watching again. Thank you.
That was amazing! I needed to know all of that. I was especially glad that you went over the cube/cylinder unwrap. That will really help me know how to unwrap different shapes. Thank you so much for this video. Wish I could give it a ton of likes.
Many thanks for answering the question that tore me inside out which is: how the heck do I unwrap in "follow quad" mode and keep my islands intact until final packing.
A trick i use sometimes with organic shapes is by pinning parts of it. Then select one vert near the edge abit offset inside then press G to move, sometimes this relaxes the UV unwrap a lot more and better.
Life saver, thank you. Subdivision texture stretching mystery was killing me. Also will play around with this Follow Active Quad dark science magic voodoo.
When you were deselecting the vertices that you don't want selected in UV editor using box select mode it took a lot of time and extra work, it would have been more easier if you used circle select mode(shortcut key "c") for it.
Good stuff. I didn't know about the averaging island size, usually did it by hand. The follow active quad method on more complex shapes will definitely come in handy as will the metioned UV packaging addons!
Damn, I thought "26 min long for a lesson on UV unwrapping, it will be boring as hell" and then, 26min later I was like "what !?! it's already over ?". Thanks to teach me how wrong i was. That's what i call some quality course.
That's gotta be the biggest compliment a teacher can get. Thank you and glad it was helpful! -JL

Clothes are essentially made by taking a 2D pieces of fabric and stitching them together by the seams to create clothing that can fit over a 3D object. Probably not a bad way to get an idea of how seams should be placed.
On clothes the uv seams are usually best placed (imo) where the actual seams are so very appropriate analogy.
This analogy is perfect, and that's why it's called Seams
"...to create clothing that can fit over a 3D object.." YEAH US :)
Hands down the most helpful UV Unwraping video I have watched in the last two years.... And I have watched pretty much them all. Thank you for this video.
Thanks so much, glad it was helpful!
I never, ever leave comments under UA-cam videos, but this tutorial has solved SO MANY of the problems I've run into while learning UV Unwrapping. You're a savior!
Still one of the best UV related video on the net. God bless for it!
Definitely the best tutorial on UA-cam explaining UV unwrapping.
This tutorial is one of the best educational and well-expressed video among the others in YT. It is so clear and also detailed. Thanks for this amazing tutorial. I have learned a lot :)
Yeah, definitely seconding this comment! Absolutely lovely content! I learned more in 26 minutes than I usually do in an hour. :) Thank you!
Yes, Jonathan is very good in teaching. Let the power be with him on this way! It's kind of extremely useful and condensed content, a pleasure to consume. Thanks.
That was a very educational 26 minutes. 6:50. I think I'm going to cry. That was beautiful!
This is pure gold. UV/Unwrapping can be daunting, but Jonathan showed how simple it can be with these few and simple tips. Thank you CG Cookie and Jonathan!
I just begun with UV unwrapping this week and you drop this. PERFECT timing
This was by far the best UV mapping/unwrapping tutorial I’ve ever seen. I finally get it.
it's crazy how you speaks like its on 1.25 speed, I was constantly checking haha Thanks for the tutorial. my wish is to get better at UV wrapping
I actually didn't see any words to say, that's very good, I didn't get ample explanation from tutorials like this, thank you very much you helped me in some way, please give us more tips and tricks we are learning a lot from you. May God guide you to the right path.
i don't often leave comments on videos but i just wanted to say your follow active quads tip is exactly what iv been searching for you are a genius
This is by far the most useful uv unwraping video I have come across.. Thanks a lot

Aligning uv vectors has been most difficult part of UV mapping for me, thanks to this video I got over it guy, thank you so so much.
Man! This is one of the best unwrapping tutorials! You really know how to explain thing fast and simple. Big thanks, i learned a few really cool things.
That's the best thing a teacher can hear. Thank you! -JL
GOD I'm not even a few mins in but this is SO helpful omg. My turtle UV gonna be finished TONIGHT w/ the tips already omfggg,,
You probably went through all the most useful tools in Blender UV unwrapping arsenal. GREAT VIDEO!!!

You've actually made UV unwrapping fun for me. Thanks, Jonathan!
This is such a bomb tutorial. Very informative. Thanks for this.
I love UV unwrapping, unironically. I find it quite relaxing
I'm watching this course at the moment, and I like it a lot. So far I'm on the modeling, but can't wait to get to texturing phase
It's so satisfying to finally add color and make it look like metal! Good luck :)

Very thorough and instructional video, yet straight to the topics without unnecessary fuss or pointless introductions! than you very much
Lots of precious tips in this video ! Thanks for this awesome work.
I swear, this tutorial made me SOB with relief. THANK YOU.
Easily one of my favorite unwrapping tutorials, incredibly densely packed with information. Thanks!
there are not enough worlds to say thank you enough! I will definitely be buying any relevant classes for me that I can! you are great! (I usually find this stuff really hard, but recently I realized its just about finding the right teachers for me!) thank you!

I was in need of that tip about the problem with subdivisions
Damn I love this guy, real good at teaching
Advanced follow quads was super helpful!
Finally going back to finish my Pothead project that I bought some time ago. I had no idea this was here. While the character is based on simple shapes, it's taken me a couple of tries to get it and this helps a bunch.
I didn't know how much the UV unwrapping is important until this video.
One of the most usefull and well explaned tuto on this topic.

May need to learn some magic uv tools may be able to solve your problems, magic uv is self-contained plug-in supplemented by many advanced features
great one! I need to watch this a couple of times!
Coming from a Maya background here and was wondering about how to do similar things in Blender. Great video, thanks a lot! Will definitely be coming back to this as I move forward learning how to make the shift to Blender.
this is a whole course! Epic! I doubt I need another tutorial on this
uv editing doesn't seem so bad after all... thanks!
This tutorial has totally reframed my view on UV unwapping. I was really struggling to deal with Blender's UV unwrapping system after coming from a different 3d modelling program and this one video has changed the game on that. Thank you!
Great tutorial, fast, easy to understand, highlighting hotkeys, perfect.

Many thanks for answering the question that tore me inside out which is: how the heck do I unwrap in "follow quad" mode and keep my islands intact until final packing.
perfect tutorial as usual
Your tips actually saved my project! Thank you so much!
with follow active quads, you don't need to select the other quads in that uv island, just the master quad
Excellent video on the issues when unwrapping. Marked into my watch list for continued reference.
A trick i use sometimes with organic shapes is by pinning parts of it. Then select one vert near the edge abit offset inside then press G to move, sometimes this relaxes the UV unwrap a lot more and better.
This is SO helpful. Thanks a ton! You do an amazing job of making the complex process of UV unwrapping feel more manageable.
Every single tip was particulary helpful!
one of the best video, which is actually covering the topic, thanks to author
so many helpful tips. thanks. been talking this for days now. admittedly I chose something difficult to start with.
Thank you for the very good video. I learned a few new things - great
you saved my life, thanks man good video

Amazing tips, great vid! Thanks
You just got me out of my absolute UV editing nightmare!
Really simple, thanks.
Your tutorials are excellent. Thanks for uploading.
I needed this
@6:39 there is a free addon for blender called "UV squares" that will one-click square the entire selection off while maintaining the scale.
That addon can sometimes give extremely inaccurate results so be careful !
I've been subscribed for many years but this tutorial made me turn on the bell. Super useful, thank you so much!
Life changing tutorial 😳
So good! Helpful - since I'm always not a great unwrappper;)
Good stuff. I didn't know about the averaging island size, usually did it by hand. The follow active quad method on more complex shapes will definitely come in handy as will the metioned UV packaging addons!
thannks for the video sir this helped me alot
