Lexus GX470 stuck in gear, will not shift | Fixed!

Hello and welcome, thanks for stoping by. Today I'm working on the GX as it is stuck in gear. The shifter will not allow the trans to get out of reverse. At first I had a mini freak out, then thought everything through. The gear selector is attached to the trans cable with a metal pin but it's captured with a small plastic grommet type piece. Well, mine was broken which allowed the gear shifter to move without moving the trans cable. That was a terrible explanation, sorry. We got it fixed so, all good. I explain it better in the video, promise. If this happens to you you can always slid the cable on to the pin to get you to your destination. Really hope this helps save people some money out there. This video saved us from a horrible situation. Your description was EXACTLY what our symptoms were. The cable in our car (an es 330) was in a slightly different position, but basically was just off of the knob. I didn't have the clamp part at the time, but I was able to shift the car to get back home thanks to your video. THANK YOU, SIR! You are helping real people out here. THANK YOU!

Thank you for this video. We bought a used GX for my son last Saturday. Today he called panicked that it wouldnt start and seemed to not have gone into park. I ripped the console off, made a temporary fix with two zip ties, showed him how to temporary fix it if the ties broke when I wasnt around, and we have a bushing on the way for the real fix.

My es350 won’t go in reverse. Park , Drove and neutral seem okay. Possibly the same issue ? I’ll have a look tomorrow afternoon

Did you happen to figure out which way that white plastic square and spring went in? Mine went flying too

I do not remember right now. Pretty sure it can only go in one way. Spring first then the white piece with the long end down. By memory I’m thinking the longer section goes down to the back. It will allow you to test it once it’s in for proper operation. Hope that helps.

@@nazarshafqat So the shifter is working correctly through the range from park, reverse and so on. If you can get it into drive and it's not moving, make sure the transfer case is not in Neutral. The knob to the right of the shifter, make sure it's in HI.
