Clash of the giants at the 11foot8+8 bridge

- On May 6th, a recycling truck challenged the 11foot8 bridge to a sort-of jousting duel. In this clash of the steel giants the old canopener got a bit rattled but I don't know that the truck escaped completely unscathed. This was crash #182 since 2008.
The bridge is OK. A crew inspected it an hour after the incident and trains have been crossing it since.
The bridge is not okay. The bridge is traumatized. The bridge needs counseling. Serious counseling. I mean did you see that thing flinch? I don't think it's supposed to do that. I've never seen a bridge Flinch before. That's not normal man. That bridge is mentally scarred for life.
Thanks for the update ❤
Really, hard to believe brotha !!!

When they added the flashing signs, lights and sensors I thought it was the end of this channel.

Yet here I am in 2024 witnessing a fresh bridge feeding.
I wonder if the color red would have helped.
Yoo, had a feeling you'd be a fan of the can opener.
They could have people with strobe lights and bull horns on the street warning people and the bridge would still take hits

Now the truck driver knows "If I just go fast enough I can make it through", this is his new daily commute.
Those arms definitely helped get it under the bar and bridge and still keep some speed. I can't imagine the downward force they put on the suspension though.
do it enough times and it'll make it under without touching!
Right. While weakening the structure and putting others lives at risk when a train derails.
There need to be Bars or warning lights being installed way before the Bridge itself, on each point of the crossing section.
@@NeverMind-pk4wz This is a delivery route for other trucks, who turn off onto Peabody St. Warning bars would not be suitable. There's signage leading up to this intersection direction taller vehicles onto alternate streets. People are just stupid.

The hydraulic arms that lift trash containers to be emptied were partially raised. The guy prolly wasn't aware that his truck was higher than usual.
Also, they raised the bridge, but never touched the sensor. There was a four inch gap between sensor actuation and actually hitting the bridge. Now there is a twelve inch gap.
I bet the guy drove under the bridge on an almost daily basis and never hit it before, despite the warning flashing.
That is the peril of a warning that goes off much too soon. People learn that they can ignore it. Until something is different, like the arms being lifted high enough to hit the bridge.

brother, the rail on the bridge jumped. that has to be some HELLA damage
considering the literal rails jumped a couple feet into the air(those aren't light and most weigh more than a fully loaded bus) there's almost definitely damage to at least the rails and even possibly the things that are supposed to be holding them down so they don't get knocked out of alignment. my town went over the heads of the railroad and actually demolished a bridge that was that height and cited the fact that it was out of code and not able to be grandfathered due to the fact that its a important structure that could fail under certain circumstances that are mentioned in code. bsf tried suing when they got the almost 20 billion dollar bill but lost because the town just charged them for the cleanup of the rail materials. that line is now abandoned.

Louisville, Kentucky has a can opener just like this. It's on Third Street near the University of Louisville campus. It's height is also 11 feet 8 inches and has the same warning lights. Practically a twin. I think this year they have had to pull seven trucks from it.
I love that you can look at certain marks on the yellow beam and go back to find the exact crash that made them with this channel.
The beam also looks like it has a bit of an upward bend to it now (before this truck hit it).
Is it just the way I'm seeing it?
It has certainly taken some hits..
That new beam's already seeing some serious battle scars, damn
The goal was to make the bridge get hit less, so it’s serving its purpose.
It needs to be about fifty times stronger. They should have used a beam the size of the ones the bridge is made of.

It tried to warn him but he just had to beat the red light. His emotions went from "Yeah, I beat the light" to "Oh no, I've just lost my job" in less than a second.
It seems like the detector is either broken, set too high, or some delay has been added (which makes it effectively useless).
