Man, this SOB has guided so much of my journey through photography it's almost unfair. Keep up the banter, it's what keeps us level baby. Rockin' that a6400 now and naturally I feel a strong vibe to start a vlog. Wild.
The mic slapping you in the face is so funny. You are combining humor and facts so damn well! I don't like the fact that when this came out so many people value the camera after it's vlogging capabilities. That's just wrong. Thanks for sharing more than other on this camera. For a person new to photography most videos just are so negative and basically tell you that you need IBIS and a flip screen, I bet it's really misleading to amateurs. Also I had to pause at 8:58 and wipe something up real quick.
I seriously don't understand why record limit is such a big deal. Who even has to record video for 30 min continuously? I don't understand people making it look like a deal-breaker
@@VMKAROUND365 well, say you are a small company wanting to film a whole press event which is longer then 30 Minutes, that would be one scenario. The question is, if the batteries hold out that long. Then again, you can allways power it via a bigger battery pack.
@@VMKAROUND365 I need to record longer than 30 min. because I'm doing sit down interviews (with noone behind the camera). I have a Sony a7Rii, but I can't use it for my video purpose with the recording limit and no tilt up screen so I can see, if I am in frame (most important when vlogging - not for the interviews...).
That will be much help for Boke Bros. Kai had no problem filming Boke Bros with his GH5, but I always need to set a 28mins timer just so that we could finish off what we were talking and let me restart my recording on my a7SII, before it stop at 30mins
Hey kai, the reason they've not limited vid length is because the EU recently scrapped a tax on video cameras, the definition for which was ability to shoot for over 30 minutes
FAT32 has a max file size of 4 gigabytes so older cameras are naturally crippled by that as well. Some cameras jump on to the next file without any issues but most loose some footage in between or completely stop recording. 4gig is something like 13-15 minutes @4k30p
Yes it's definitely not an overheating issue with all cameras because I can use my Olympus EM5 Mk1 for an entire evening recording live music, so long as I restart the video recording every 30 minutes.
@@JoeMaranophotography I haven't owned a Panasonic camera ever, so I don't know whether this would work well, but usually yeah, it should just work that way.
The biggest thing the a6400 has going for it is the price. It's super impressing that a sub $1,000 camera is being reviewed against the GH5 (a $2,000+ camera). If you've already bought into the Sony lineup, the a6400 is a great b cam. And if you're a beginner wanting to get a great camera for not much, this will beat almost anything canon, Nikon, or Panasonic can throw at it. $900 is really good.
I think the missing stepping stone is a metaphor for choosing camera equipment! You get out in the middle of the practice of photography, and you take pause...then you have to take a chance to keep going. And in the end you get bogged down (the mud...) but you have to keep going. The A6400 seems like a good choice for those of us using something like the A6000, which lacks the quick and sticky AF. If you have lenses with OSS then you can excuse the lack of IBIS. But I am just an amateur...without deep pockets! And the cage idea is brilliant!
I've been using an a6000 since it came out and I love it. I was looking for a reason to upgrade to another a6xxx but neither the a6300 nor a6500 felt right. This one just might. And I 'd get to keep using my awesome 18-105 power zoom too. Thank you Sony !
This video should of mentioned the “GH5 comparison” - exactly my situation thanks Kai! Thinking of keeping the GH5 for video and getting an a6400 for photos..
Love the review! Just as a note as i’m not sure if people are aware or not, Sony deliberately did not include in-body stabilisation so that vloggers could use a gimbal (or product similar) without having to turn it off so that the camera isn’t fighting with the stabilisation that the gimbal provides! Obviously this doesn’t suit everyone’s needs but that is the reason that it was left out☺️
4God17 The camera was designed and marketed for “vloggers” to use so that is the reason for leaving it out as most do use a gimbal or something similar! Their lenses do mostly but only 2 axis I believe whereas the A6500 for example has 5 axis stabilisation so covers all grounds of possible camera shake which is similar to what a gimbal would offer, if that makes any sense. (Please feel free to correct me if i’m wrong about the 2 axis in the lenses as i’m not 100% sure on it but I believe that is what it is).
I was searching for info on the a6400 and was quite happy to see a Kai W video near the top of my search results. Great review. I think the a6400 will do what I want it to do but the image stabilization is definitely lacking for walking type video.
Great idea on the cage Kai. I usually always get a cage, I have one sitting on my shelf right now for the a6500, but I could always get screw and adapt it to the bottom of the mic to mount it on the right side.
You should be a stand-up comedian. Great eloquence. The best part is at the end, while crossing the river. I almost thought, he is going to actually fall to demonstrate that A6400 is weather-sealed. LOL!
Thank you finally, someone, out there who thinks the cage is the best I have been saying from launch day just use a cage every time someone complains about there mic or using some weird contraption. Great video.
The reason why alot of sony cameras are limited to 30 mins recording times is because there was a tax on video cameras that could be avoided by limiting the recording time, but I dont think this exists anymore which is why you can record for longer with this camera, however if you have an a6000, 63, or 65, then you can install 3rd party apps to thoes cameras that allow you to disable the record limit, unless your recordings are cut off anyways because of overheating
It's a true talent to inform potential consumers and make them laugh at the same time. Trigering Sony (or any other brand) fan boys is a bonus. But man, did you sneeze right on the lens? I mean 05:10

Great review, love how you started with actual footage. Makes it so much more valuable than just listing specs :) Would love to test this camera out in Amsterdam!
This is really solid camera! There is no better option for video at that price at this moment! Not having IBIS suck a bit but if you have stabilised lenses or shoot wide angle you are good. I wish Sony never put that flip out screen because it makes camera really wide and it is very tricky to hold it or look at it if you do selfies or vlog!
Solution: try using a Feel World 5.5 in. monitor on my a6500. along with the Smart Rig cage and Sony shot gun microphone. The Feel world monitor can be reversed, image flipped for a use as a vlogging rig. Works great , but need a Ronin gimbal for walking shoots. All this equipment adds a lot of weight for a camera, that was designed to be smaller and lighter than a DSLR.
anyone else noticed that the first 25 seconds of the video shot on GH5, Kai's face is slightly out of focus (autofocus gremlin)? then bang, switch to a6400 - pin sharp!
Ahh, your point of view on this one is very refreshing! Sony has been hitting the “influencer” world hard with this one, and it’s tough to separate fact from fiction. That flip screen design really is just terrible though.
I like it, hate twist and turn screens, it's a good compromise for photographers and the much smaller percentage of vloggers. easily fixed with a smallrig cage or $10 bracket.

I use my A6400 in tandem with the A6500 as a two camera still photography setup most often with a different focal length prime lens on each camera. No sweat on lack of IBIS with the A6400 because I have IBIS in the A6500. I am a great fan of vintage lenses for the remarkably creative renditions that these old lenses offer. However, on most of my model shoots, I have promised images to the models, most often for their portfolios. Here's where 2-cameras really shine.
