Fact is - going all the way back to the Syd days - Roger Waters was a control freak - Barrett was writing the songs - but Waters was controlling many other aspects of the band's business - and when Waters finally became a great songwriter on his own - his ego blew up and then you had an ego maniac combined with a control freak - that was bound to put off the other guys in the band eventually ..
That being said, it WAS Waters who always was the driving force behind Pink Floyd to keep recording, whereas the others seemed to be lacking a decent work ethic. Waters did most of the work on The Wall and The Final Cut and the others just did the absolute minimum. It was this dynamic that made Waters believe Pink Floyd was over and he quit the band, only to see to his astonishment that the others almost immediately sprang into life and started making music again. It must have felt like a knife in the back to Waters and I can't help but wonder if three middle-aged men couldn't have solved their conflict with Waters better.
@@AnitaWright-v2s Only people like him would appreciate him as a person. I would not personally admit to liking him after he tried to shut down Pink Floyd after he left. He threw everything he could at doing it too.
All Good Bands have to have that “Asshole” in charge or little gets done or created .. Few will admit this at the time, but as time goes on.. all these big Bands had that 1 Man in charge who generally got things done and ultimately to a breakup
Pink Floyd should have probably called it day after Animals and certainly after The Wall or at least Roger should have left, perhaps if they had, and gone away for a few years to do their own thing they might have been able to get back together later on to do the odd tour or even record the odd album. In my opinion once relationships start to sour and breakdown its far better to bail out before the bitterness and loathing really kicks in. Personally most of Rogers solo stuff does nothing for me and Pink Floyds stuff without Roger is, with the exception of High Hopes, one of my all time favourite tracks, and one or two others, ok but nothing special. They were far better as a unit. That is just my opinion of course, I don't claim to speak with any authority on this.
In the seventies and eighties were songs like Money or Echoes to a bass player something like Smoke On The Water or Stairway to Heaven to a lead guitarist.
Gilmour needs everyone to perceive Waters as a lunatic villain so he can never be seen as a member of the true Pink Floyd. There are many fans who believe Pink Floyd is not Pink Floyd without Waters. Gilmour did a couple charity appearances with the original members but he would never agree to a reunion tour even for charity. People would invalidate the post-Waters material.
oh boy cant you do a script without the redundancies and foolish repetitions? sorry man, this video is dreadfully boring due the poor writing. i hope you do better next time.
The Wall Tour: ironically, the tour was too expensive and the band didn't really earn any money. Richard Wright, however, as a "hired Keyboard player" got paid as per contract. So at the end he was the only one who earned money on tour.
There was no "Wall Tour" They performed 31 shows in only four cities. The problem was getting the stage and stage hands from venue to venue. Everyone except Waters wanted to streamline the show and take it on the road. But Waters was too attached to the theme of musician isolated from his audience. It would contradict The Wall's story to add a greatest hits segment and take it on the road like their typical tours. But, true, Wright was the only one to make money while everyone else lost money.
Once he left Floyd, he was mediocre and never lived up to the success of the post-Waters Pink Floyd. He couldn’t accept that his success was because of the other member’s talents.
Out the gate his first blunder was not recognizing what Pink Floyd had become when he assembled his solo band. Gilmour's vocals and guitar playing were what sold all of their greatest compositions. Second to Gilmour was Waters's lyrics. Lyrics are nothing unless you present them with an appealing voice. Eric Clapton on guitar was one of the worst picks to be his Gilmour, one of the biggest mismatches in Rock history. Give credit to Ozzy Osbourne for knowing he needed someone like Tony Iommi when he chose Randy Rhoads. Imagine Ozzy choosing Eric Clapton.
How often by so many has this story been written?. Frank Sinata and Bing Crosby spring to mind. They both reached incredible heights as entertainers , but privately they were actually horrible people. For me Roger Waters' burnt the last bridge when he came out actively punting for Putin a few years ago. He even did a podcast with another Putin fan boy & convicted sex offender Scott Ritter. One can't actually sink any lower!.
Roger Waters is a fucking genius..Without him you don't have that amazing body of work. The Wall is a fucking masterpiece .. yes they all were irreplaceable parts of the music but it was water's unyielding grip that made it happen. Whatever the aftermath that body of work is testament to greatness. And when he left Pink Floyd was no more. And none of them ,himself included, could ever recreate that kind of genius again. Unfortunate situation but because of him they are all wealthy beyond their wildest dreams
Not condoning Roger and his actions, but it seems great music is created when there is large conflicts withing the band. Look to many bands for this effect - Fleetwood Mac, Van Halen, The Beatles, etc, etc.
from what i have read in other stories,Gilmore had to play bass on alot of songs, cause Waters just couldn't handle it.Gilmore to me was the true genuis, not MuddyWaters
not sure where you heard that; just listen to animals and meddle LP waters is damn good on the bass. so what he is an asshole most of the best frontmen to ever do it are...(axl, james h., sting, etc)
Way back in the day, Roger couldn't even tune his bass, Rick Wright used to do it for him. Dave Gilmour did play bass on some recordings apparently, especially if it was one of his own songs, but I don't think that was so much Roger couldn't play it, more that he didn't want to. Apparently they both played bass on One of These Days He certainly played the bass live on the two occasions I saw them in the seventies. Dave and Rick were the musicians, Roger has said himself that he always considered the lyrics to be more important than the music.
Gilmour is one of the greatest guitarists of all time to me but he played bass only on one song because Roger wanted to play acoustic guitar. He is a great bass player. He wrote all lyrics and the most part of music.
Yeah, I have to say that Pink Floyd was shallow.and uninspired after Waters left. It's also.pretty clear that Waters solo.work is lousy. Waters couldn't see how great they were together.
For all his faults, Waters was an integral part of the band. And while the band continued to record, the music was a shadow of the signature sound. The Wall was a deeply personal album for Waters. I joked that afterwards, "Waters could not get over the Wall." The last album sadly was proof.
all you have to do is see what happened after the break up. The rest of the band went on and released records that had songs that were played on the radio.Roger Waters did not.
The fact that Waters was married four times tells you all you need to know.
enjoy the music they created and forget about the rest....
Thank you. I couldn’t care less about the rest.
All this could be said about the Beatles or the Eagles.
@ maybe the Eagles but the Beatles weren’t anything like that.

@@tjroelsmaThat's correct.
So Nick Mason said all of that?
I doubt it he’s to much of a gentleman.
There were no quotes from Nick that I heard. Nick has been very quiet about the whole battle to keep Pink Floyd going, and what he thinks about Roger.
I never felt the same way about Floyds music after Rodger departed. But Waters has proven himself an A-hole.
In fact Waters is adictator type of man the other three were musicians
No sir!!! He is the only truthful, the other three sold their souls to the musical market!!!

He's not even that great a bass player.

I agree 100%. And in my opinion THE FINAL CUT is a complete desaster.
I agree. Waters era Floyd was the best without a doubt. But what a tool.

In our world, many people need serious professional therapy. Waters is among them. Sure, he's a genius, a fantastic creator, BUT, what an AH he was.
It is often said that the line between genius and insanity is a very thin one.
