  • Follow along as I bring this tired little electric mini truck back to life! This is the first part of a multi-part rebuild series where I will get this truck fixed up and back driving on the road.
    Each video phase will be released weekly and at this point, I honestly don't know how many you should expect.
    If you enjoyed this video and would like to subscribe please do. I'm excited to share this rebuild process with you and hopefully, we will both learn something from it.

    i have found many EV conversion kits out on the web that can be swapped into a kei truck, had a manufacturer recommend 20kw motor based on my requirements. i get stuck at the battery pack...needing @150 miles range...my commute loop is 25 miles each way, 1/2 @35mph 1/2 @55mph, cold climate. Lead acid, Li, used, new...this thing is NOT a race car. I have a Mitsubishi kei truck.

      I decided to go in the direction of used Li cells for my replacement pack. Seemed to be the best middle of the road option for now. You mentioned a cold climate. How cold of a climate are we talking?

      @@savvysprocket Northwest Indiana. We can get some brutal cold snaps to go with to 100f days..

      I would suggest looking into some used Li cells for the range you are targeting. Just make sure you think about charging them when things are cold as that type of chemistry doesn't like to be charged when they are too cold. Keep an eye on my channel, I have a video coming soon about the Li cells I'm using in my build.

      Think about lithium titanate they need no bms and can charge discharge in freezing temperatures they are a little bigger and a little heavier but charge ridiculously fast and can cycle 30,000 times so they should last the lifetime of the vehicle! The whole bed could be used removing 4" of depth and battery space could be utilized for a small generator if a person wanted more range making it a hybrid it's something I've been chewing on there's a guy that has a bank in his umog and provided the cnc plans for stacking these cells horizontal using cool aluminum bus bars . Look lithium titanate terrible efficiency and he has a video debunking will prose videos on lithium titanate as being totally wrong!

    Looks like an off-road etruck designed for use inside factories or warehouses but not for highways - no vin#.

      Thanks for the comment. This unit was built as a NEV or Neighborhood Electric Vehicle which in the US can't use highways however it can go on public roads under 25mph. It does have a VIN however I'm having trouble getting it registered due to a VIN misprint when it was sold off at a government auction. Fingers crossed I can get that sorted!

    Question for you. I have the same setup and not having much luck with the truck when coming to an issue I have. The batteries were switched out from lead acid to lithium. That being said, now the truck will run but running in reverse. Is this a simple fix by switching the phasing on the motor? Wasn’t sure if this is a controller programming change.

    • @savvysprocket
      @savvysprocket  Рік тому

      The controller is able to switch the direction of the motor dynamically. Is your truck missing the switch that controls this function on the dash? Mine is located towards the left of the steering wheel.

      Mine is between the seats by a battery meter. So to run it forward, I have to switch the control switch to reverse. Same goes for when I want to run it in reverse. This is why I was thinking on switching the motor connections coming out of the controller, but wasn’t sure if this would hurt the controller. Also I have not tried to charge the new batteries yet as well because of the polarity concerns.

    I've been working on an electric version of this truck. I got a pdf of the manual. Might help. Would you like a copy?

      That would be awesome. Is it the service manual? I have been searching for some wire diagrams of the high voltage systems.

    So this is a Suzuki Carry that is Electric from the factory? Ive been looking at this model as a Diy Ev conversion but if I can find one already electric and just buy some new LPA's for it then that would be way easier and cheaper, how is the project going? Really interested to see how well it performs, eg its range and top speed for the amount of KwH of batteries.

    • @savvysprocket
      @savvysprocket  2 роки тому +1

      This truck is similar to a Suzuki Carry and yes it did come from the factory as an EV. These are built as what is known as a NEV or a Neighborhood Electric Vehicle which in the US has a maximum speed of 25mph. With that said this is a limit set on the motor controller as the motor itself can run faster. If you are looking for one keep an eye on the gov auctions as they pop up rather frequently given about all the lead-acid batteries that these came with from the factory are EOL. Keep an eye on my channel for future updates. I have been busy with some other projects recently however still plan to have this running this summer. Thanks for the comment.
