I don't think I'll be able to camp comfortably. I would definitely get scared easily by noises in the night and my fear of bugs and spiders. I think these stories give me a new reason since these feel like horror movies. Especially the one about the abandoned camp.
I had my scared moments even when I was at summercamp at barely 18 to work there. Especially the night I was doing the dishes (I stayed behind as the rest had a night out since we only had staff and a few campers that night until the new group arrived the next day) a kid was waiting for our chef to walk him back to his Cabin that was quite a bit from the rest of the camp. I had to tell him she was busy talking to the camp director and it could take a while, like maybe even up to 30minutes. He said he guessed he'd wait but I said it was fine, I wouldn't mind walking him back (kinda cute really. All tough during the Day but walking back in the dark to his Cabin was a no no). So I did but I admit I hot creepy feelings myself walking back in the dark thinking "what if". But nothing happened, I went back to my dishes (he even protested a bit at first "but you're busy!" So I said it was fine, I could finish them after) Apparently the boy was happy I took him back because the next day his older sister thanked me for walking her brother back.
Atleast you don't live where Hercules beetles live. I do, and when I was camping one flew into our tent. It was horrifying, but, all in all, bugs are creepy. I don't blame you!
I remember I once went camping as a child, around five years old, and it was for one night. Our tent was about as close to the restrooms as allowed, as my brother was still a baby and my mom needed a close and convenient place to change his diapers. I had to go to the bathroom, so I walked in and all I noticed was one thing; no stalls. Not only were there no stalls, but the toilets were all just sink-like holes into one huge counter top-like platform. It was one of the most strange and unsanitary things I’ve ever seen. Thankfully, though, the men’s bathroom was normal.
Yeah, that was my thought as well. If someone gets hurt you'll rush them to a hospital, and then you can go back and get your stuff. It sounded like a fairly big camp too, so even if you want someone to stay with the hurt person you could still send someone else back to the camp.
You saying that about people thinking kangaroos are in your backyard gave me an idea for a question. Are there any things you view America as having like Americans (and other countries) view Australia as? I hope that question made sense! 😊💖
If you mean American stereotypes, theres a new Florida Man story every day and they probably all ride to school in Tesla’s. Also counting big cities, I’ve never encountered a New York.
I'm in America and the Florida Man thing is so true, but I find it hilarious, not rude or anything. It's pretty entertaining to see what crazy stuff they do because it's almost *always* Florida.
On the note of seeing a dog out in the woods and mistaking it for a wolf, I think that really only applies to species built like wolves with similar colors (like huskies). Because honestly I wouldn’t be too scared if someone’s pomeranian was waddling around the woods.
That Frog story was hilarious and kind of happened to my dad many years ago. He'd wake up every morning around 3 to 4 am for work. He said how he liked it sometimes but was creeped out other times because it was always dead silent. One morning he kept hearing rustling in the bushes followed by weird sounds. He doesn't scare easy but this caught him off guard. He cautiously made his way over, peeked in, and it of course ended up being a frog hissing at my dad. Since then whenever my dad tells this story, he always gets a kick out of it when he builds up the story like he saw a demon dog or something only for people to be disappointed by the reveal lol. I've never been camping either though but I've roasted marshmallows/hot dogs on a fire and told scary stories with friends. It was honestly so much fun and I'd love to do it again someday! Only bad thing is the smell of fire/smoke stays on you and your clothes.
We went camping one time and the tent turned out to have a problem that rendered unusable. So we had the kids sleep in the back of the Ute with the tail gate down. In the middle of the night, my wife was woken by a large animal passing by the cab. She followed it with her eyes and saw it sniffing around the back of the Ute. It was a black bear. We think. One of the boys woke up, where the bear's head was right over the top of him. All we could do was hope to high heaven that he didn't scream. As it was, the bear finished his investigation and ambled off. Son looked towards the cab, with eyes like Wimbledon trophies. An experience he has never forgotten. My wife worked as a tour guide in the Rockies, so she has a plethora of camping tales. This one was a little closer to home than most.
Once while camping with my brother, dad, and a few friends of his, I slept in the Jeep cuz I didn’t wanna sleep in a camp ground that was known for having a shit ton of snakes. It wasn’t comfortable sleeping in a Jeep but at least I didn’t have to deal with the boys or the snakes 🤷♀️
Once when I was camping with some members of my church, I woke up in the middle of the night and heard something walking around outside the camp, however it was so late in the night that it was almost sun rise, so no person would be outside, and it sounded like a big animal. I didn’t go outside, I mean I was half awake, and I felt it was safer to stay in the tent, so I think it was a bear or coyote
I remember once when I was like 11, I went to a commando training adventure camp with my 2 life long friends who I'll call Gabriel and Sarya ( like a military camp but more so adventure activities. Also shockingly a lot less discipline enforcement than I thought there would be. Maybe cuz I'm in India. Either that or me and my m8s were just rlly lucky cuz we got up to a heck ton of mischief. ) And we had this night time activity called ambush training. Basically the entire camp was grouped into 2 groups "Soilders" and "Terrorists". The terrorists had to hide and the soldiers had to catch them and bring them to "jail" ( our dorms. Oh yeah this was a live in camp, no parents. Unfortunately no outside snacks T_T ). When it was my groups turn to be terrorists, me and Gabriel hid somewhere no one could find us. Sarya was in the other team. Half an hour passes. Everyone is found except for us. Naturally everyone was panicking. It had only circulated the students though, not reached our sirs. Everyone was in front of the dorms, discussing what to do. Admitting they couldn't find us would mean loosing the game. But this could be important . " 3 - 2 - 1- DID YA MISS ME?! "There were me and Gabriel, on the dorm roof. Yeah safe to say we scared the sh*t out of them XD
my friends decided to go camping on friday the 13th once. I knew it was a bad idea but they wouldn't reschedule so I went with them just to make sure they didn't die. at some point during the night after everyone else had already fallen asleep, I woke up because my back hurt, and the bright moonlight displayed the shadow of someone just outside my tent. but I was so tired I just said "not today, Satan." and rolled onto my other side and went back to sleep. luckily none of us died, lol, but when I asked my friends about it they got all freaked out, so apparently it wasn't any of them.
Bugs freak me out, I cant sleep in tents, I get lost easily, I'm clumsy, and I cant tell directions, these are all reasons I only go camping in spots with lots of friends/family and sleep in an RV.
So I go to a camp every summer in a different state, very far from where I’m from. One night, super late, probably actually an early hour of the morning I had woken up and couldn’t fall asleep. Everyone else in my cabin was asleep. Then I just started hearing this laughing, like cackling reaaallllyyyy near where I was. I was next to a window and it seemed to be coming from right next to it. It just kept going. I legit thought I was going to be murdered lol. I just stayed super still and eventually fell asleep. The next morning I told my cabin mates about it and one of them who live in this particular state was like “oh that was just a bird they make that sound” they don’t have those laughing birds where I’m from lol
This is why you should always bring a dog camping with you. You don’t have to worry about creepy men sneaking up on you. You don’t have to worry about someone helping themselves to tea…none of it. The dog will alert you & scare them away! Lol
Yk you should never go out to check if you hear something, like someone screaming. Call the emergency number or some help, but do not go outside to check the noise yourself. It could be mountain lions, they sound like a woman screaming. Or it could be some other wild animal, and even if it's a human being attacked, you could get murdered too. The murderer probably has weapons.or the attacker could be a bear.
I live in Australia to, my family and I go camping at least 3 times a year, my parents stay in the caravan, my brother a swag and me a tent. I am always scared that a snake or massive spider will crawl into my tent while I am out or asleep. I also have been waken by a kangaroo outside my tent.
I remember when I used to go camping back when I was in scouts. The last camping trip we went on when I was still in it was next to a quarry. Since I was young a moth got into the tent and 7 year old me was freaking out while mad dad was trying to get it out
Once when we were camping, I was about 6 & my brother & sister locked me in the privy. It was night & they were supposed to walk me to the privy & back. So scared, I thought the open hole was going to suck me in.
Snake story reminds me on being in south american jungle where most mornings there'd be baby tarantulas on the mossie net covering the hammock that had dropped down from the thatch roof above. Same expedition I sometimes stayed outside after dark to write in a diary by headtorch and would get large bats (possibly vampire) flapping their leathery wings about my head. When I was at school I did the duke of edinburgh awards, this was during the expedition section for the bronze award. Practice hike started after school and we hiked up into the hills and camped overnight. Woke to see fog filling the valley below which slowly started coming up the glen and covering the hills which was bad visibility but good for map & compass navigation practice. We had gone from the campsite to a nearby summit and were going along some tops when we stopped for a breather. We were cold and soggy from being in cloud, some worse than others due to the loaned waterproof gear, when out of the grey strode this figure in a woollen tam o'shanter, white shirt unbuttoned most of the way down, kilt white socks and walking boots. His skin was paler than death and hair colour to match but never broke his pace as he looked at us all gave a nod, cheerful "morning" and carried on back into the gloom leaving onto the slowly fading tap of his wooden walking stick meeting stone as confirmation that he was there. The 9 of us looked at each other with expressions of what the hell just happened.
I mean if I made a cup of tea from someone else’s resources in the middle of nowhere, I would at least wake ‘em up so they can share a drink with me. If I wasn’t feeling company I would leave a note and maybe a few dollars as an exchange for the tea. Lol
Well, you take some city folks who go camping for the first time...they encounter a garter snake or something and it scares them to death. Or one of them chops off a finger while making kindling for starting camp fires. Inexperienced campers can kind of let their alligator minds overload their canary asses.
I went camping with my scout troop once and while we were playing capture the flag one of the other scouts found a body.. yeah that camping trip was cut short
