  • The story-line (outline) for the Book of Mormon probably came from Ethan Smith’s 1823 New York novel, View of the Hebrews. This video goes over the many similarities between the two books.

No contemporary critic of Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon pointed out the supposedly "obvious" connection to the View of the Hebrews and the Book of Mormon. It is only with the failure of the Spaulding theory that critics began seeking a new naturalistic explanation for Joseph's production of a 500+ book of scripture. As Stephen Ricks notes:
Beyond these "unparallels," there is a further question that must be answered by proponents of the View of the Hebrews hypothesis: why do none of the early critics of the Book of Mormon mention Ethan Smith in their attacks on it? If the parallels are so evident, why weren't they noticed by individuals who were not only acquainted with Ethan Smith's book, but were also existentially interested in its claims? Why wasn't it prominently mentioned as a source for the Book of Mormon until the beginning of the twentieth century, when the book itself had only an antiquarian interest and its contents were no longer so widely a part of popular discussion? My suspicion is that what appear today to be "distinctives" of View of the Hebrews, eschatological and otherwise, seemed less so in the early part of the nineteenth century, when these ideas flowed freely in published and unpublished forums.

GrandPa Je I think showing the differences is unnecessary. If Book of Mormon is the unique book in the history and the most accurate book in world, why would there be another book written before it showing so many things in commons. Isn’t the Contents of the BoM Hidden by God’s people in the past and then revealed to everyone? So there should be no one or no books identical.

Robert Easton if I wanted to write a book, I could also borrow something from another book. The recreation doesn’t have to be 100% same. I can take pieces I like, altar things, delete I don’t like and , ta-da-, cool, I have a new book, Book of Mormon.

Phoenician text has been found in the americas dating far before columbus & many similarities exist between meso-american language and ancient egyptian. Not to mention the same megalithic & pyramidal architecture. Not to conflate these books as historical accounts, but there is an underlying kernel of truth within these accounts. Not to mention Quetzalcoatl & legends of white skinned gods held in esteem by the Aztecs. If you dig, there’s something fascinating to be uncovered.

Hi so are there actually facts?
    How many books were sold?
Did Joseph Smith read a copy of the View of the Hebrews?
Did Oliver Cowdry read a copy of the View of the Hebrews?
Did they actually attend the same congregation at the same time period?
Did Oliver even meet Ethan Smith?
Are there similarities between the VotH and any other books?
How many writers / writing styles were involved in the VotH?
How many writers / writing styles were involved in the BoM?
How long did it take to write the VotH?
How long did it take to write the BoM?
Would anyone like to write a book with the detail in the BoM in a two month timescale, even with a computer to type into, and show us how easy it was, and still be able to stand up to critics over 100 years from now?
    Just asking.

I am just wondering why the anti-mormons at the time of Joseph Smith, thought little of the connection between the BoM and the VotH. They would have jumped on it like crazy if there was any viable connection.
I look forward to see what the next conspiracy theory will be.

@@grampagraham3075 no conspiracy needed when Joseph Smith tells of events of stories that were said to not be known to anyone elsewhere prior to his claimed encounter. Yet Ethan Smith had 7 years on him living well near enough each other especially with Joseph Smith being a man who took the time to familiarize himself with many written and local works of his time and area. There are no coincidences. Things happen as are as they should be just as we know men will be wicked.

Ethan Smith and Solomon Spalding were both students of John Smith, Joseph's uncle, at Dartmouth. There is a ton of intersectionality here. I think you have to be extremely indoctrinated to not see the obvious relationship between view the hebrews, the late war, the Solomon spalding manuscript, the new testament and the BoM.
