- Donald Trump returning to the White House would be “a once-in-a-thousand-year opportunity” for North Korea, according to Ri Il Kyu - one of the highest-ranking defectors.
Mr Ri escaped North Korea in 2016 and has since been face to face with Kim Jong Un on seven separate occasions.
He says that North Korea still views Mr Trump as someone it can negotiate with over its nuclear weapons programme, despite talks between him and Kim Jong Un breaking down in 2019.
In his first interview with an international broadcaster, Mr Ri provides a rare understanding of what one of the world’s most secretive and repressive states is hoping to achieve.

He defected to South Korea in November of last year, and only recently decided to reveal his identity after a long period of research and consideration.
In addition, after the assassination of a ellite North Korean defector in the late 90s, the South Korean government significantly increased its protection of high-level defectors.
And the overwhelming economic and military gap between the two Koreas in the 21st century has made it virtually impossible for North Korea to do something against defectors who enter the South.
They will already know he defected, so there is little point in concealing who he is. They already know everything about him and that he has fled.

There was an interview with a news reader recently, who admitted that, at times, she has trouble keeping a straight face when reporting on Trump, and Vance has also bee attracting laughs, with many calling him 'very peculiar'.
Also, aside from the leaders at the G7 summit and the UN laughing at him, there was also the remarks from Britains ambassador about Trump, which were far less than complementary.
A British minister once described Trump as ' a "neo-Nazi-sympathizing sociopath'.
One could hardly describe these things as 'respect'..quite the opposite.
