I wouldn't say this bc Tyler was a bit delusional, she said in the beginning she was using him for her own agenda. Plus I've had plenty of ppl have crushes on me and were just like Tyler who would read into everything and make any small phrase or gesture I did into some romantic thing when it wasn't.
She seems to get along with Eugene just fine (well, better than the other characters anyway). She stands up for him when he's bullied, even cleans him up and shows great concern for him when he's hospitalized. It also stuck out to me that when he tells her "this might surprise you, but I don't have any friends", she doesn't follow that up with some snarky remark like "Trust me, it doesn't" like any other character typically would, because she herself doesn't have any either (whether by choice or not).

If you know DSM5 criteria of ASD, Robin in Stranger Things literally tells you she is on the spectrum. (Lack of social cues, sensitivity to clothing, late walking, her ease in learning Russian can be perceived as pattern recognition)
I'm not diagnosed but have a strong suspicion, and I can relate to being disturbed when others realize the "mask falling off" when playing music. Tragically I've kept myself from doing it because I was so ashamed of people thinking or saying anything about it, but not because they say it's good or bad, but because I hate being perceived.

As someone neurodiverse and disabled and queer I have to say I’m rather tired of the whole head canon thing whether it’s “autistic coding” or “queer coding”. I just wish they would make characters actually diagnosed and out of the closet (whatever closet that may be) let’s have more actually autistic (or whatever other representation) characters.
quinni from heartbreak high(it's on netflix) is an openly autistic lesbian character and she's also non verbal for part of the series her actress is autistic and has adhd too
I agree. It gets really annoying, real fast, especially when they shoehorn in heterosexual relationships (or romantic relationships in general) that didn’t make any sense in the context of the show or movie.
There is one UA-camr (I can't be half chaffed remember her name) but her literal schtick is to find every character and present them with the ND coding. I dislike head cannon, as everyone who likes it, has to make ever single character they come across a part of that head cannon.
I relate to her character so much. I really like the mention of her therapist can't understand how she doesn't have much social motivation that is exactly the hang up my mother has always had with me. I am rejection sensitive but I really don't seek being around people that aren't for me. I love the organization in this video- it was a series of jarring points that are screaming at me to seek diagnosis already.

Where people with ASD need routine, we need variety. etc etc Like, its crazy when I see people with both because its like you're the human representation of a shaken up bottle of pop.

One of the Autistic Headcannons that I'd like to point out is Hiccup from Httyd, which is a headcannon I've had since the first movie came out (which I saw in cinema). It didn't help that Hiccup's relationship with his dad, is the same as mine (without the happy acceptance storyline). (I find it cool that I look like Astrid. I need to find a Hiccup looking Astris for my Astrid looking Hiccup)
Wednesday and her school are an inclusivity metaphor for the Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) neurotype, so I think a lot of the characters are coded in ways that are designed to make them inclusive/representational for a lot of neurodivergent people who feel marginalised. As a Bipolar II, I can also see a lot of "myself" in Wednesday and Enid's characters because I sometimes flip between those two polarities of behaviours/thinking, although I spend a lot more time in "Wednesday" mode.
I doubt that adding supernatural powers has ruined the Addams Family aspect, as the family alone is believed to be barely human. (Aka Fester, Cousin It, Thing, Lurch, etc). Wednesday having visions, actually aligns with her diagnosis, as she’s very logical and observant. Her being Psychometric, adds to the “not liking being touched” aspect of having Asperger’s, as I, too, do not like people touching me. Having stronger senses to sights, sounds, and touch, makes sense. Her being psychic is part of her neurodivergence, as it shows her being sensitive to external sensory, without explicitly giving away her diagnosis.
Not the best, but she definitely made me very comfortable,,, or maybe I identified with her in my ways I guess. I was diagnosed at 22 (last year) and I'm so grateful for it lol.
I feel a sense of comfortability with her character that I don't usually. She doesn't show loads of emotions that tv characters tend to- for me that is nice to see. I'm not autistic but this is a cool video
The part that confused me is that Wednesday has a strong sense of justice, but she didn't care that Tyler had bullied Xavier! She said something like, "You thought I would care about some stupid prank?" But she didn't tolerate bullying when it happened to her brother! Do you think this was just a slip-up on the writers' part? I feel like it almost plays into the negative stereotypes about autistic people being unfeeling or uncaring (when Wednesday clearly cares for Eugene and others).
I can see the similarities but would be cautious throwing these terms around. The masking aspect I find the most interesting, since women on the spectrum tend to do this more. Another reason why it is harder to get a diagnosis, other than previous generations of sexism.
I've one episode left but I really liked Wednesday's character. I like how she's her 'authentic' self so much of the time and I relate to her picking up patterns that others don't and her blunt analysis of situations. I'd love a video on Sherlock Holmes as an autistic character, if that's something you're interested in making.
I have diagnosed aspergers autism and I heavily relate to Wednesday, like a LOT. The way we see the world sounds odd to others when it's just how we see things. We see things how they are, we don't delve deeper into it. The way Wednesday is very anti-social and pushes people away and hides her emotions I really do relate to. A lot of my family members just see me as emotionless when I'm really not, like I cried at a favourite character of mine in an anime because he died, I really am not emotionless. I laugh, cry, get angry like anyone else, I just don't show it. And I love how it's portrayed in Wednesday. It makes it feel like my feelings and the way i am is justified and that I'm not the only one like this.
Am not emotionless but I don't care about what other people care about (holidays, sporting events, and other social conventions/constructs) and care about things they don't (like learning the whole periodic table of the elements, the nature and impact of demographics etc).
watching wednesday was an odd one for me because i found myself relating to enid in her style, interests, optimism and feelings but i didn’t relate to her at ALL socially. i’m very talkative online but in real life im mute most of the time. i realise i probablt appear to other people more like wednesday in my mannerisms. i speak very blunt, directly and monotone 😭 i related to almost everything abt her. what u said abt the colour thing and how everything she owns is black, i’m the same but with pink !! wednesday is one of the characters i relate to most whilst at the same time being my total opposite lol also i’ve been wearing my hair in the same hairstyle pretty much everyday since i was a kid bc it’s the only hairstyle that doesn’t make my head hurt 🤭

I love pink cutesy stuff and I'm very talkative & affectionate with ppl I feel comfortable with, but around people I don't know well I'm very quiet and stoic. Love this video- I’ve never really found anyone addressing this head on which annoys me- autistic people accept Wednesday and the wider Addams family as autistic/neurodivergent but allistics refuse to accept it. Also love that you used the Sherlock from Ebola Holmes as while the BBC Sherlock is also autistic coded, the actor is super ableist especially to autistic people I also love your umbrella academy tshirt too! I think five and klaus among others are autistic coded too!
This was really interesting. I’ve been seeing a lot of comments about Wednesday being Autistic coded but had yet to see anyone break down exactly why. I don’t think I’m on the spectrum but I am introverted and have a lot of social anxiety so I still found myself relating to her character and Eugene’s more than anyone else. I also found the sensory sensitivity really fascinating, as I definitely experience that, as well. Whether I’m spectrum or not, I find it fascinating how so many diagnoses and traits intersect. She is really a perfect demonstration of Autism, SzPD, and Conduct disorder. I love how well they demonstrated these disorders while bringing light to them as humans, with the empathy towards her.

Great video. Like you said, in the new TV show there are werewolves and stuff, so the Addams family's macabre lifestyle doesn't stand out so much. This means it's Wednesday's personality that makes her unique. She's had an unusual, sheltered upbringing as an Addams, which can explain a lot, but if you look at her parents and brother they seem to have less problems with socializing and are less emotionally detached. Anyway, I love her character. In a way its good TV characters like this aren't explicitly identified as being on the spectrum (although Wednesday sees a therapist so that could have been a good opportunity) because it doesn't pathologize them.
I really liked the show. Normally, when a show tries to portray an existing historical person or fictional character as neurodiverse, it makes them flatter or more caricatured. On Wednesday, the opposite happened. It made her a much more complex and understandable character .

You definitely should! Even if you end up discovering you aren't Autistic, you'll at least have a bit of a deeper understanding of how you work. If possible, try and see a professional about it. Ik that sort of thing isn't something everyone's capable of doing (and also that sometimes psychiatrists are _absolutely horrible_ about Autism) but it's definitely worthwhile if you're able to and if you get a psych that isn't a total ass.

I am diagnosed with ADHD and strongly suspect I have autism as well. My sensory issues can be extreme and I also wear all black-never thought it might be connected to my sensory issues.. I like the realistic darkness of it, idk, I just feel connected to the color. I felt so seen by Wednesday bc she shares some of my special interests and I chronically info dump 😅

Being 50 and diagnosed with Asperger's 9 years ago, I can confirm that although you might be correct...in reality neuro typical people avoid people on the spectrum. Even worse, after explaining one is on the spectrum absolutely no respect or understanding is shown. Horrible! Using neuro diversity seems to have become a trend in shows and movies. I don't know if that really is good thing as for raising awareness. Personally I feel like we're just good for laughs when it suits the neuro typical, when it doesn't suit them we are just dead weight. The mentioning of cartoon figures only highlights that. It's interesting how words can be interpreted differently; I love being "neuro-divergent" because when I see/hear "divergent" it evokes the root word "diverge" and I think of the movie Cars, where Lightning McQueen mistakenly gets off the big highway and ends up in Radiator Springs. This is where he meets his authentic community and discovers the joys of the scenic route versus the Interstate, which is my metaphor for socialized neurotypical behaviour, mindlessly rushing from destination to destination in a big straight line without any real connection to each other. Conversely, I conflate "neuro-typical" with being typical which is rather boring or common. Who wants to be THAT?!?

I personally think the best to date is Quinni from Heart Break high as she out right identifies as Autistic and the show highlights the struggles realistically in life as well representing the cool things about being Autistic. But that's just me I do really think Wednesday is a great character though its just more romanticised with in the whole fantasy world and rightly so the show was definitely an escapism. 😊
Sir, always with respect - (from my perspective) you are a clear and well-informed orator: I sincerely appreciate your 'take' on many facets of the WEDNESDAY franchise. I don't agree with all of your analysis, but you make many excellent points. I do not wish to self-support my position, but I do have a Doctorate - but NOT in psychology or sociology: my point - while possibly not clear, is that I also am on the spectrum and ALMOST all of my associates with Masters's, and Doctorates, are autistic - and display many facets and traits, as WEDNESDAY does/has. In my later years (as I grow older) I have grown to have a greater appreciation for those who are DIFFERENT. Call different autistic if you wish, but perhaps society needs to expand their compassion for those who are autistic and perceived to be DIFFERENT than mani-stream society. Definitely, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but my opinion is that (to me) WEDNESDAY is funny, Wednesday and (most) of the characters are addictive and I have (had) many laughs at the witticisms/the jokes, and words of the characters in the WEDNESDAY franchise. Watching once is not an option - I love it. Without the intent of ranting, society has made progress in accepting, cultural and ethnic differences, we are more accepting of color differences, and we are more accepting of immigration and those differences from new citizens, there is 'more or less,' acceptance of government (party) and religious differences, there is greater acceptance for those with physical (how do I say this without being hurtful - with some physical limitations), I believe that there is 'some' greater acceptance that not everyone needs to be another Einstein - we all have a contribution to make - if given the opportunity. Society has opened its doors to gender differences and stereotypes, and the doors to white-collar leadership in management has been expanded. (Female comment, as to greater influx and recognition that women can make excellent corporate/company leaders in the highest of positions.) I hope that in time, society (the human race if you wish) will grow to accept EVERYONE who is different than mainstream/vanilla/complacent folks. Being different is not a liability, it's a definite ASSET. The human race is making progress, not completely, and perhaps not fast enough, nevertheless, there is still room for growth and continued acceptance that GOD, or fate or 'whatever' does not create us all (to be) IDENTICAL. We all have gifts (if you will allow me to use that terminology), we all have 'things' that we accel at, things that we simply are better at than most. I embrace, encourage, and support everyone - including those who have made mistakes in life - everyone is a member of our small universe and at the end of the day, everyone needs a hug, a partner - a friend. I do and have appreciated your dialogue and examination of WEDNESDAY - and I thank you. You have expanded my thinking, which is always good. A friend.
I relate to Wednesday so much that we’re basically the same person other than her black hair, braids, bangs, and Final Destination Powers. I’m autistic too lol. I’m heavily into art instead of music too, as another difference.
She, and Spock, seem more schizoid to me....She can read people... She is just locked into living in her self consciousness... The hollowness feeling this creates also informs her aesthetic.

I Argue that all her traits are just consistent with her individual personality - she likes graves and black because she is a gothic Addams family character, she is highly organised speaks multiple languages and sees trough people and patterns alike because she is wicked smart and she is "not a hugger" just because she is repellant to everything that is not part of her dark and black wicked world. Her traits are just a expression of her personality
Funnily enough a lot of autistic people are seen as "just them". I'm autistic and was seen as my own type of human being. I was quirky, did my own things my own way and whenever someone asked about it I was "just being me". I wasn't diagnosed as autistic until this year at 24. Autism is genetic and when I used to talk to my mom about something my dad was doing that bugged me she would reply with "that's just your father". Looking back a lot of the things that bugged me were the ways he was showing his autistic traits. Now I have a nephew who from birth my mom and sister were saying he's "a little Samantha". What was happening is he was showing a lot of the same traits as me so when I started talking about my Autistic experience other people in my family started seeing it in themselves or their kids. Plus autistic traits tend to shone through a lot in a person's personality. A lot of things people thought were just my quirky personality were autistic traits. Autism is a neurodevelopmental disability. It's about how your brain develops, and your personality also develops in your brain. So it makes sense that they would tie in with each other. Both can be true, that things can be autistic traits and that they can be a part of your personality
But from all the Addams family members,wednesday is sticking out the most, she is an Addams but she still is even more different from all her family members. I am Autistic and my hole life i felt like i was in the wrong family/place/planet. I thought i was an alien and accidently dropped out from the ship. Now i have to live here and nobody understands or want to try to understand me. I see wednesday in me. I dont Think its a bad thing to relate with charakters. It feels good to see ppl like me are liked, i feels like, its normal to be this way and i feel a little bit more accepted, because in reality we are mostly the outsiders and not really liked.

I feel extremely seen by wednesday, as we're very similar in terms of being the spectrum. My mom jokingly called me Morticia since i was a kid because of my hair, but now the entire family just calls me Wednesday because they, unknowingly, also see the similarities. It's funny that im compared to a teen because I'm 27.
This is interesting. I finished writing a play this year titled THE DARK SWANS and one character was explicitly identified as on the spectrum (this is not a central theme of the story, just a fact, which does however play into the plot in some ways). I was concerned because the character plays the violin and at first I thought the milling entrance of audience members while final tuning of instruments before a performance would be bothersome in the extreme. But then I thought the music itself would be like a comforting blanket, a welcome sensory experience to shut out the world in favor of something beautiful and soothing on a soul-deep level. Essentially (offered for whatever it was worth) I began with the notion of taking some of my own off-putting social discordancies and dial them up. Then watched many videos by women with what I've heard described as "high functioning" autism. When we had a reading, I was fortunate enough to find an actress right for the part who was indeed on the spectrum--and she told me she was astonished this play had been written by someone who was not neo-divergent. So...yay. I feel I am that much closer to understanding some of my fellow species members.
I loved this series as I went through what she went through was on my final warning for assault on a racist islamphob so my family sent me to live away with my aunt and the government ordered me to have therapy

As a fellow spectromer I definitely agree with this. I definitely identify Wednesday as augisitic therefore identifying with her. I'm so pleased we have her as representation.
As someone who probably came off as a weird less huggy version of wedsdays werewolf friend… this is dangerous stereotyping. Still better than ‘here is a robot. Is this robot autistic? Though I do agree with a lot of this, I also understand that understanding how nts think is also important. Nts think in boxes and when a stereotype is reinforced too much can struggle to see outside of it. Being screamed at ‘you can’t be autistic! You have empathy! Those monsters don’t have feelings’ when I was a child has stuck with me my entire life. I’ve lived over twice my age at the time and yet… it really sticks with you. Basically being told ‘we helped bury your diagnosis as far as it could be after your mom died because we think autistic kids are unfeeling monsters and have recognized you have feelings and therefore cannot be because this triggers our cognitive dissonance’. Also we can all learn social ques. That said. Don’t use hints. Lol - as hard as I’ve worked, I’ve had friendships end with zero idea why because they didn’t communicate but then later claim to have ‘hinted’, and making friends is harder as a rule as an adult too. Just… not everyone presents in a way that can be noticed as easily and some of us feel safer that way.
Something I like to bring up regarding Wednesday is her love of things like murders, serial killers, etc. Because some of the most successful criminals were incredibly charming. You have to be to literally get away with murder. It's common for autistic people to study people as an interest. A lot of us like things like psychology and studying human behavior. What if studying serial killers is how Wednesday tried to learn some social skills? Let's be honest if you want to learn something perfectly like she does, she's going to go to the most "successful" cases. If serial killers can commit countless heinous crimes and everyone who knew them can think they were the sweetest person, that means they achieved some form of peak social status that an autistic person would love to achieve. I can just picture the thought process of "if they can get away with murder than maybe I can get away with my social missteps." It could be how she built her masking strategies, and that might be why it kind of strikes that uncanny valley with neurotypicals. It might also be why people were constantly getting serial killer vibes from her. Beyond her fascination with all things morbid, this might actually be what she considers successful in social situations Plus a lot of us gain social skills through the media we take im. I thought for years that you were supposed to break up with your boyfriend the first time they made you mad, or that best friends are supposed to stab you in the back, because that's what I saw in movies. If her favorite media is about serial killers than that's what she's more likely to pick up and emulate
I about did go over your points, in my opinion got an actual point just with the first and maybe, otherwise that would make me a very high functioning autistic Let me explain, i think most of the reasons Wensday is like this is caused by her being about antisocial partially caused by her family being pretty peculiar as you well know Because the lack of stable friendships and external contacts Wensday grew up mostly with just her family and by herself that lack of external contacts gave her less common sense and a lot more time for herself which caused those peculiar interests, also shes intelligence already and maybe a good learned so learning weird stuff helped her a lot, some of that is just family culture, so technically if we consider is family as Wensday's society she's perfectly integrated among them, and when it comes to masking you don't have to be autistic in order to do it, some have already the attitude for that while some others do it on purpose or because of something that scarred them in the past, Wensday explicitly says at some point that she distrust about the whole world, and that's all i can extract from the Tim Burton's Wensday since it lacks a strong backstory and i did not watched the last episode
Even if Wednesday isn’t autistic, I do prefer the headcanon autism. I like how shows characters outside of their respective diagnoses. I would like it if it was blatantly said in the show but this, in my opinion is a good step forward. I like how it allows for a diverse range of neurodiverse presentations and diversity in general.

so autism and adhd are actually 2 separate conditions, however they are often co-occurring, like i myself am autistic with adhd, and i definitely feel the difference between the 2.
Autism is viewed as a pervasive developmental disorder and surrounds social communication and reading or interpreting social cues as well as having intense interests and perseverative tendencies, and typically have issues with sensory overwhelm (sometimes sensory underwhelm but overwhelm seems to be highly prevalent...such as photophobia, sensitivity to noises/ scents/ textures) and is heavily correlated with other traits such as impaired awareness of danger, both verbal and nonverbal communication difficulties and being calmed or assured with routines, and sometimes seeming to 'rigidly' adhere to our routines (which can help us cope with an often chaotic and too intense world.) There are some overlaps with ADHD...notably the intense focus and delight in subjects both find fascinating (hyperfocus abilities) and often executive functioning issues (Although for those who have no comordity...the executive functioning difficulties can have very different origins.) There are also many autistic traits that are often very different or even stereotypically opposite to traits seen in ADHD, too. So there are some similarities but also many differences. They are different conditions but if the traits were written down there would likely be a Venn diagram overlap that would show some shared traits for sure...(executive functioning, hyperfocus).
I am autistic and really recognized myself in Wednesday, though I am nowhere near as dark. Of course, her darkness is what makes the whole Adams family fun.
What are your thoughts on the trend of self diagnosing from teens watching this show and seeing arguments like this? Just because you relate with a character doesn’t mean you’re on the spectrum. The actual point of the story is just to be and accept yourself, but there are many (particularly kids) who are reading far too deep into this. If you were to believe TikTok, 90% of teens are on the spectrum. But I think we know that’s not the case in reality. Thoughts?
I am autistic, and believe not nice. The best thing they said I was excentric. And they ignored me. As a adult they call me grazy and a lot a personel don't want to work with me. The world make not sence, I am a lot of times afraid. No social skills and I have many masks.

I don’t know of anyone who’s written on that topic specifically (I don’t specialise in disability studies), but someone like Shelley L. Tremain might be able to point you in the right direction

I wouldn't say this bc Tyler was a bit delusional, she said in the beginning she was using him for her own agenda. Plus I've had plenty of ppl have crushes on me and were just like Tyler who would read into everything and make any small phrase or gesture I did into some romantic thing when it wasn't.
That is what it’s like in a lot of ways but not the only presentation.
She seems to get along with Eugene just fine (well, better than the other characters anyway). She stands up for him when he's bullied, even cleans him up and shows great concern for him when he's hospitalized. It also stuck out to me that when he tells her "this might surprise you, but I don't have any friends", she doesn't follow that up with some snarky remark like "Trust me, it doesn't" like any other character typically would, because she herself doesn't have any either (whether by choice or not).

If you know DSM5 criteria of ASD, Robin in Stranger Things literally tells you she is on the spectrum. (Lack of social cues, sensitivity to clothing, late walking, her ease in learning Russian can be perceived as pattern recognition)

Tragically I've kept myself from doing it because I was so ashamed of people thinking or saying anything about it, but not because they say it's good or bad, but because I hate being perceived.
I think when I mask comes off for me is when I sing or I engage in my Disney side.( any Disney fans out there you know who you are)

As someone neurodiverse and disabled and queer I have to say I’m rather tired of the whole head canon thing whether it’s “autistic coding” or “queer coding”. I just wish they would make characters actually diagnosed and out of the closet (whatever closet that may be) let’s have more actually autistic (or whatever other representation) characters.

There is one UA-camr (I can't be half chaffed remember her name) but her literal schtick is to find every character and present them with the ND coding. I dislike head cannon, as everyone who likes it, has to make ever single character they come across a part of that head cannon.
I relate to her character so much. I really like the mention of her therapist can't understand how she doesn't have much social motivation that is exactly the hang up my mother has always had with me. I am rejection sensitive but I really don't seek being around people that aren't for me. I love the organization in this video- it was a series of jarring points that are screaming at me to seek diagnosis already.

One of the Autistic Headcannons that I'd like to point out is Hiccup from Httyd, which is a headcannon I've had since the first movie came out (which I saw in cinema). It didn't help that Hiccup's relationship with his dad, is the same as mine (without the happy acceptance storyline). (I find it cool that I look like Astrid. I need to find a Hiccup looking Astris for my Astrid looking Hiccup)

Wednesday and her school are an inclusivity metaphor for the Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) neurotype, so I think a lot of the characters are coded in ways that are designed to make them inclusive/representational for a lot of neurodivergent people who feel marginalised. As a Bipolar II, I can also see a lot of "myself" in Wednesday and Enid's characters because I sometimes flip between those two polarities of behaviours/thinking, although I spend a lot more time in "Wednesday" mode.
I doubt that adding supernatural powers has ruined the Addams Family aspect, as the family alone is believed to be barely human. (Aka Fester, Cousin It, Thing, Lurch, etc). Wednesday having visions, actually aligns with her diagnosis, as she’s very logical and observant. Her being Psychometric, adds to the “not liking being touched” aspect of having Asperger’s, as I, too, do not like people touching me. Having stronger senses to sights, sounds, and touch, makes sense. Her being psychic is part of her neurodivergence, as it shows her being sensitive to external sensory, without explicitly giving away her diagnosis.

The part that confused me is that Wednesday has a strong sense of justice, but she didn't care that Tyler had bullied Xavier! She said something like, "You thought I would care about some stupid prank?" But she didn't tolerate bullying when it happened to her brother! Do you think this was just a slip-up on the writers' part? I feel like it almost plays into the negative stereotypes about autistic people being unfeeling or uncaring (when Wednesday clearly cares for Eugene and others).
I can see the similarities but would be cautious throwing these terms around. The masking aspect I find the most interesting, since women on the spectrum tend to do this more. Another reason why it is harder to get a diagnosis, other than previous generations of sexism.
I've one episode left but I really liked Wednesday's character. I like how she's her 'authentic' self so much of the time and I relate to her picking up patterns that others don't and her blunt analysis of situations.

I have diagnosed aspergers autism and I heavily relate to Wednesday, like a LOT. The way we see the world sounds odd to others when it's just how we see things. We see things how they are, we don't delve deeper into it. The way Wednesday is very anti-social and pushes people away and hides her emotions I really do relate to. A lot of my family members just see me as emotionless when I'm really not, like I cried at a favourite character of mine in an anime because he died, I really am not emotionless. I laugh, cry, get angry like anyone else, I just don't show it. And I love how it's portrayed in Wednesday. It makes it feel like my feelings and the way i am is justified and that I'm not the only one like this.
Am not emotionless but I don't care about what other people care about (holidays, sporting events, and other social conventions/constructs) and care about things they don't (like learning the whole periodic table of the elements, the nature and impact of demographics etc).
watching wednesday was an odd one for me because i found myself relating to enid in her style, interests, optimism and feelings but i didn’t relate to her at ALL socially. i’m very talkative online but in real life im mute most of the time. i realise i probablt appear to other people more like wednesday in my mannerisms. i speak very blunt, directly and monotone 😭 i related to almost everything abt her. what u said abt the colour thing and how everything she owns is black, i’m the same but with pink !! wednesday is one of the characters i relate to most whilst at the same time being my total opposite lol

Love this video- I’ve never really found anyone addressing this head on which annoys me- autistic people accept Wednesday and the wider Addams family as autistic/neurodivergent but allistics refuse to accept it. Also love that you used the Sherlock from Ebola Holmes as while the BBC Sherlock is also autistic coded, the actor is super ableist especially to autistic people I also love your umbrella academy tshirt too! This was really interesting. I’ve been seeing a lot of comments about Wednesday being Autistic coded but had yet to see anyone break down exactly why. I don’t think I’m on the spectrum but I am introverted and have a lot of social anxiety so I still found myself relating to her character and Eugene’s more than anyone else. I also found the sensory sensitivity really fascinating, as I definitely experience that, as well. Whether I’m spectrum or not, I find it fascinating how so many diagnoses and traits intersect. Great video. Like you said, in the new TV show there are werewolves and stuff, so the Addams family's macabre lifestyle doesn't stand out so much. This means it's Wednesday's personality that makes her unique. She's had an unusual, sheltered upbringing as an Addams, which can explain a lot, but if you look at her parents and brother they seem to have less problems with socializing and are less emotionally detached. Anyway, I love her character. In a way its good TV characters like this aren't explicitly identified as being on the spectrum (although Wednesday sees a therapist so that could have been a good opportunity) because it doesn't pathologize them.
I really liked the show. Normally, when a show tries to portray an existing historical person or fictional character as neurodiverse, it makes them flatter or more caricatured. On Wednesday, the opposite happened. It made her a much more complex and understandable character .

You definitely should! Even if you end up discovering you aren't Autistic, you'll at least have a bit of a deeper understanding of how you work. If possible, try and see a professional about it. Ik that sort of thing isn't something everyone's capable of doing (and also that sometimes psychiatrists are _absolutely horrible_ about Autism) but it's definitely worthwhile if you're able to and if you get a psych that isn't a total ass.

Being 50 and diagnosed with Asperger's 9 years ago, I can confirm that although you might be correct...in reality neuro typical people avoid people on the spectrum. Even worse, after explaining one is on the spectrum absolutely no respect or understanding is shown. Horrible!
Using neuro diversity seems to have become a trend in shows and movies. I don't know if that really is good thing as for raising awareness. Personally I feel like we're just good for laughs when it suits the neuro typical, when it doesn't suit them we are just dead weight. The mentioning of cartoon figures only highlights that.

It's interesting how words can be interpreted differently; I love being "neuro-divergent" because when I see/hear "divergent" it evokes the root word "diverge" and I think of the movie Cars, where Lightning McQueen mistakenly gets off the big highway and ends up in Radiator Springs. This is where he meets his authentic community and discovers the joys of the scenic route versus the Interstate, which is my metaphor for socialized neurotypical behaviour, mindlessly rushing from destination to destination in a big straight line without any real connection to each other. Conversely, I conflate "neuro-typical" with being typical which is rather boring or common. Who wants to be THAT?!?

Sir, always with respect - (from my perspective) you are a clear and well-informed orator: I sincerely appreciate your 'take' on many facets of the WEDNESDAY franchise. I don't agree with all of your analysis, but you make many excellent points. I do not wish to self-support my position, but I do have a Doctorate - but NOT in psychology or sociology: my point - while possibly not clear, is that I also am on the spectrum and ALMOST all of my associates with Masters's, and Doctorates, are autistic - and display many facets and traits, as WEDNESDAY does/has. In my later years (as I grow older) I have grown to have a greater appreciation for those who are DIFFERENT. Call different autistic if you wish, but perhaps society needs to expand their compassion for those who are autistic and perceived to be DIFFERENT than mani-stream society. Definitely, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but my opinion is that (to me) WEDNESDAY is funny, Wednesday and (most) of the characters are addictive and I have (had) many laughs at the witticisms/the jokes, and words of the characters in the WEDNESDAY franchise. Watching once is not an option - I love it. Without the intent of ranting, society has made progress in accepting, cultural and ethnic differences, we are more accepting of color differences, and we are more accepting of immigration and those differences from new citizens, there is 'more or less,' acceptance of government (party) and religious differences, there is greater acceptance for those with physical (how do I say this without being hurtful - with some physical limitations), I believe that there is 'some' greater acceptance that not everyone needs to be another Einstein - we all have a contribution to make - if given the opportunity. Society has opened its doors to gender differences and stereotypes, and the doors to white-collar leadership in management has been expanded. (Female comment, as to greater influx and recognition that women can make excellent corporate/company leaders in the highest of positions.) I hope that in time, society (the human race if you wish) will grow to accept EVERYONE who is different than mainstream/vanilla/complacent folks. Being different is not a liability, it's a definite ASSET. The human race is making progress, not completely, and perhaps not fast enough, nevertheless, there is still room for growth and continued acceptance that GOD, or fate or 'whatever' does not create us all (to be) IDENTICAL. We all have gifts (if you will allow me to use that terminology), we all have 'things' that we accel at, things that we simply are better at than most. I embrace, encourage, and support everyone - including those who have made mistakes in life - everyone is a member of our small universe and at the end of the day, everyone needs a hug, a partner - a friend. I do and have appreciated your dialogue and examination of WEDNESDAY - and I thank you. You have expanded my thinking, which is always good. A friend.
I relate to Wednesday so much that we’re basically the same person other than her black hair, braids, bangs, and Final Destination Powers. I’m autistic too lol. I’m heavily into art instead of music too, as another difference.

I Argue that all her traits are just consistent with her individual personality - she likes graves and black because she is a gothic Addams family character, she is highly organised speaks multiple languages and sees trough people and patterns alike because she is wicked smart and she is "not a hugger" just because she is repellant to everything that is not part of her dark and black wicked world. Her traits are just a expression of her personality
Funnily enough a lot of autistic people are seen as "just them". I'm autistic and was seen as my own type of human being. I was quirky, did my own things my own way and whenever someone asked about it I was "just being me". I wasn't diagnosed as autistic until this year at 24.
Autism is genetic and when I used to talk to my mom about something my dad was doing that bugged me she would reply with "that's just your father". Looking back a lot of the things that bugged me were the ways he was showing his autistic traits.
Now I have a nephew who from birth my mom and sister were saying he's "a little Samantha". What was happening is he was showing a lot of the same traits as me so when I started talking about my Autistic experience other people in my family started seeing it in themselves or their kids.
Plus autistic traits tend to shone through a lot in a person's personality. A lot of things people thought were just my quirky personality were autistic traits. Autism is a neurodevelopmental disability. It's about how your brain develops, and your personality also develops in your brain. So it makes sense that they would tie in with each other. Both can be true, that things can be autistic traits and that they can be a part of your personality
But from all the Addams family members,wednesday is sticking out the most, she is an Addams but she still is even more different from all her family members. I am Autistic and my hole life i felt like i was in the wrong family/place/planet. I thought i was an alien and accidently dropped out from the ship. Now i have to live here and nobody understands or want to try to understand me. I see wednesday in me. I dont Think its a bad thing to relate with charakters. It feels good to see ppl like me are liked, i feels like, its normal to be this way and i feel a little bit more accepted, because in reality we are mostly the outsiders and not really liked.
For the most autistic females, she is a very good representation of female autism, it is what it is. We dont want offend anybody because of it. We just feel connection with her, thats it.

my family told me that how much I was similar to Wednesday, soon after I got diagnosed with ASD, I made them watch this video. We all laughed.
I feel extremely seen by wednesday, as we're very similar in terms of being the spectrum. My mom jokingly called me Morticia since i was a kid because of my hair, but now the entire family just calls me Wednesday because they, unknowingly, also see the similarities. This is interesting.
I finished writing a play this year titled THE DARK SWANS and one character was explicitly identified as on the spectrum (this is not a central theme of the story, just a fact, which does however play into the plot in some ways). I was concerned because the character plays the violin and at first I thought the milling entrance of audience members while final tuning of instruments before a performance would be bothersome in the extreme. But then I thought the music itself would be like a comforting blanket, a welcome sensory experience to shut out the world in favor of something beautiful and soothing on a soul-deep level.
Essentially (offered for whatever it was worth) I began with the notion of taking some of my own off-putting social discordancies and dial them up. Then watched many videos by women with what I've heard described as "high functioning" autism.
When we had a reading, I was fortunate enough to find an actress right for the part who was indeed on the spectrum--and she told me she was astonished this play had been written by someone who was not neo-divergent. So...yay. I feel I am that much closer to understanding some of my fellow species members.
I loved this series as I went through what she went through was on my final warning for assault on a racist islamphob so my family sent me to live away with my aunt and the government ordered me to have therapy

As a fellow spectromer I definitely agree with this. I definitely identify Wednesday as augisitic therefore identifying with her. I'm so pleased we have her as representation.
I think until I heard more abt wednesday, I haven't been all that interested in the show. I think I might actually go watch the show soon!

Though I do agree with a lot of this, I also understand that understanding how nts think is also important. Nts think in boxes and when a stereotype is reinforced too much can struggle to see outside of it. Being screamed at ‘you can’t be autistic! You have empathy! Those monsters don’t have feelings’ when I was a child has stuck with me my entire life. I’ve lived over twice my age at the time and yet… it really sticks with you. Basically being told ‘we helped bury your diagnosis as far as it could be after your mom died because we think autistic kids are unfeeling monsters and have recognized you have feelings and therefore cannot be because this triggers our cognitive dissonance’.
Also we can all learn social ques. That said. Don’t use hints. Lol - as hard as I’ve worked, I’ve had friendships end with zero idea why because they didn’t communicate but then later claim to have ‘hinted’, and making friends is harder as a rule as an adult too.
Just… not everyone presents in a way that can be noticed as easily and some of us feel safer that way.
Something I like to bring up regarding Wednesday is her love of things like murders, serial killers, etc. Because some of the most successful criminals were incredibly charming. You have to be to literally get away with murder.
It's common for autistic people to study people as an interest. A lot of us like things like psychology and studying human behavior. What if studying serial killers is how Wednesday tried to learn some social skills? Let's be honest if you want to learn something perfectly like she does, she's going to go to the most "successful" cases.
If serial killers can commit countless heinous crimes and everyone who knew them can think they were the sweetest person, that means they achieved some form of peak social status that an autistic person would love to achieve. I can just picture the thought process of "if they can get away with murder than maybe I can get away with my social missteps."
It could be how she built her masking strategies, and that might be why it kind of strikes that uncanny valley with neurotypicals. It might also be why people were constantly getting serial killer vibes from her. Beyond her fascination with all things morbid, this might actually be what she considers successful in social situations
Plus a lot of us gain social skills through the media we take im. I thought for years that you were supposed to break up with your boyfriend the first time they made you mad, or that best friends are supposed to stab you in the back, because that's what I saw in movies. If her favorite media is about serial killers than that's what she's more likely to pick up and emulate

Let me explain, i think most of the reasons Wensday is like this is caused by her being about antisocial partially caused by her family being pretty peculiar as you well know
Because the lack of stable friendships and external contacts Wensday grew up mostly with just her family and by herself that lack of external contacts gave her less common sense and a lot more time for herself which caused those peculiar interests, also shes intelligence already and maybe a good learned so learning weird stuff helped her a lot, some of that is just family culture, so technically if we consider is family as Wensday's society she's perfectly integrated among them, and when it comes to masking you don't have to be autistic in order to do it, some have already the attitude for that while some others do it on purpose or because of something that scarred them in the past, Wensday explicitly says at some point that she distrust about the whole world, and that's all i can extract from the Tim Burton's Wensday since it lacks a strong backstory and i did not watched the last episode
Even if Wednesday isn’t autistic, I do prefer the headcanon autism. I like how shows characters outside of their respective diagnoses. I would like it if it was blatantly said in the show but this, in my opinion is a good step forward. I like how it allows for a diverse range of neurodiverse presentations and diversity in general.

I would love to know about ADHD being on the autism spectrum. How different are the two and what makes them similar?
so autism and adhd are actually 2 separate conditions, however they are often co-occurring, like i myself am autistic with adhd, and i definitely feel the difference between the 2.
Autism is viewed as a pervasive developmental disorder and surrounds social communication and reading or interpreting social cues as well as having intense interests and perseverative tendencies, and typically have issues with sensory overwhelm (sometimes sensory underwhelm but overwhelm seems to be highly prevalent...such as photophobia, sensitivity to noises/ scents/ textures) and is heavily correlated with other traits such as impaired awareness of danger, both verbal and nonverbal communication difficulties and being calmed or assured with routines, and sometimes seeming to 'rigidly' adhere to our routines (which can help us cope with an often chaotic and too intense world.)
There are some overlaps with ADHD...notably the intense focus and delight in subjects both find fascinating (hyperfocus abilities) and often executive functioning issues (Although for those who have no comordity...the executive functioning difficulties can have very different origins.)
There are also many autistic traits that are often very different or even stereotypically opposite to traits seen in ADHD, too.
So there are some similarities but also many differences. They are different conditions but if the traits were written down there would likely be a Venn diagram overlap that would show some shared traits for sure...(executive functioning, hyperfocus).
My son has both and also intellectual disability.
I am autistic and really recognized myself in Wednesday, though I am nowhere near as dark. Of course, her darkness is what makes the whole Adams family fun.

What are your thoughts on the trend of self diagnosing from teens watching this show and seeing arguments like this? Just because you relate with a character doesn’t mean you’re on the spectrum. The actual point of the story is just to be and accept yourself, but there are many (particularly kids) who are reading far too deep into this. If you were to believe TikTok, 90% of teens are on the spectrum. But I think we know that’s not the case in reality. Thoughts?

As a adult they call me grazy and a lot a personel don't want to work with me. The world make not sence, I am a lot of times afraid. No social skills and I have many masks.

I don’t know of anyone who’s written on that topic specifically (I don’t specialise in disability studies), but someone like Shelley L. Tremain might be able to point you in the right direction

This autistic guy LOVED Wednesday! I think I know her, except last time I saw her, she had pink hair. Wednesday would never have pink hair.
They did say that the all black uniform was custom made for her because of her allergy to color.

I was looking to see if someone was going to comment this. I think they might have just assumed that because Nate uses ND on twitter, that the N still stands for his deadname. A lot of Stevenson’s books like Nimona (and also She-Ra’s netflix credits-on the interface not the episodes) have yet to go through the new editions with an updated name as well.

I am a 55 year old Autistic Transgender male to Female. I have always been socially Awkward , overly empathetic , and downright Weird. this Incarnation of Wednesday is by far my favorite. As a Taoist on top of it, I would have to say i am 65% Wednesday, and 35% Enid. Hopefully we will have that as a romantic through line in coming seasons... Thanks for this Awesome video.
