Push Up Basics | F45 Cleveland State

  • TRANSCRIPT: "Hey Team! The Push-up is a classic exercise that engages and strengthens a number of muscles in the body, most notably the pecs, triceps, and anterior delts. But you’ll also utilize your abdominals, quads, biceps, and the erector muscles of the spine to help stabilize you when performing push-ups. On top of that, there are also a ton of variations and modifications available to both increase and decrease its difficulty. So, it’s no surprise that the push-up is one of the most approachable and effective exercises around. Here are the key points to remember to master the standard push-up before delving into more advanced variations:
    Place your hands under your shoulders or slightly wider and actively press through your hands and toes.
    Engage your core muscles to stay parallel to the floor as you bend your arms to lower down AND as you push back up. Take care not to let your shoulder blades collapse in too far toward your spine.
    Keep your head, neck, and hips in alignment to maintain a neutral spine, and take care to avoid excessively arching your low back or lifting your hips too high. In essence, try to maintain a long, straight line from your heels to the top of your head.
    Lastly, avoid holding your breath - especially as you fatigue. Inhale as you lower down and exhale as you push back up.
    If performing standard push-ups on your toes is too challenging, you can always decrease the difficulty by lowering to your knees.
