  • The Nissan NP300 or Hardbody has been around for about 30 years and has certainly earned it's stripes in SA and throughout Africa in that time.
The test period with this vehicle was a time of extremes and contrasts for myself. Up front, the Africa NCAP crash test results of last year were a major concern. Then I took the vehicle on a fairly long road-trip of over 500km in one day and found it highly capable and very comfortable.
The road-trip also included a stretch of farm road with dirt, sand, ruts and rocks. The NP300 took all of this in it's stride without missing a beat.
The test vehicle was the top of the range model, so includes niceties like leather trim, infotainment screen with navigation and the aforementioned 4x4 and good ground clearance. I must admit that the screen does look like a bit of an afterthought but bearing in mind the age of the design, its an achievement to have made sufficient changes to the fascia to allow its fitment. An anomoly here is that you have to look in the glove compartment to find a USB cable.
The 2.5L turbodiesel puts out a moderate 98kW and 304Nm. No ball of fire but it cruised comfortably at the speed limit. Just be aware that overtaking may need a bit of time and planning though.
Overall, I feel that the value in the NP300 range lies in the more basic workhorse models and not at the top of the range with the test vehicle priced at R438 239.

I drive one, second had a 2.4 hardbody, and I will gaurantee mine sits at 120km/h and goes like a bomb when i overtake. Ncap results to me were very dicey, maybe even a lie. My nissan rules. It is safe. Had a crash in my 2.4 hardbuosy and the beemer was gone, mine was repaired, one bumber, a grill and a steering rod...and they are supposedly unsafe...bulldust..maybe the results were adjusted, or the test was cooked? who knows. Antway, mine tows a large caravan...no isseus..excells at dust roads, and is light on fuel...I love that bakkie!

I was hoping for a actual video of the testing like on the gravel roads and sand.

Is that a cross between a 90s hardbody and a Frontier?

I am referring to options like the GWM, JMC and JAC bakkies that are offered in SA
